artist hive background Artist Hive was originally a collective action project ‘CBD Gallery’(CBD, 2005-8) founded by our group of artists on Elizabeth street in Brisbane’s CBD. This gallery hosted scores of large experi-mental art exhibitions, events and collaborations. This group became our first Artist run Initiative, ‘Brisbane Local Arts Collective’ (BLAC, 2008-12), when we moved from our gallery space. Under this banner we designed, initiated and produced dozens of community engagement public art works for Council, Corporate and local culture sector businesses, including and combining chalk, mural and workshop projects. These two groups have been remodelled and rebranded as the ‘Artist Hive’ (EST 2012). This is a membership based business model designed to create opportunities, incomes, and career devel-opment for its member artists.

Dear Reader,

We are back again for the very colourful June issue of The Buzz! The Buzz gives you something fun and interesting to read, and helps you stay savvy with Artist Hive’s artists and latest projects.

In this month’s issue we have lots of excit-ing content, including the Racecourse Road Winter Lights Festival, an interview with Brisbane’s Angela Ryder and Artist Hive’s involvement in Calling The Past! So settle in, grab a coffee or a cup of tea, and enjoy the June issue of The Buzz!

Interview with Angela

How did you first become interested in art? It’s just something I've always done. There was never becoming interested. It’s just who I am. Where did you train as an artist/who taught you? Currently I'm studying through Open Universities for my Bachelor of Fine Arts. That is pretty much to get a piece of paper saying I am an “artist”. I find it much more inspirational to paint with other people or alone depending on my mood. What is inspiring you at the moment? Whatever catches my eye. What has been your biggest challenge as an art-ist and how have you overcome this? Having to explain the meaning behind my work, and other questions I get asked. I am really run-ning with the Art is Stupid thing. It isn’t even that I

think art is stupid. I love it. I Just don’t know how to deal with all the other stuff that seems to come with being an artist. Overcoming it? I guess I am still working on it. What is the most important thing to you as an artist? Enjoying what I do. Always trying new things and never settling into a particu-lar style for too long. What projects are you involved with at the moment? Uni and trying to find the time and space to paint. Where do you see yourself heading in the future? I don’t know. I haven't thought that far ahead. Hopefully heading many places.


On June 15, Racecourse Road Winter Lights Festival will celebrate winter with fine

food, wine, lanterns, craft, art and music! The Festival provides an opportunity for

local musicians, performers and artists to showcase their talent and connect with

the community. The days entertainment will be ongoing with a busking competi-

tion, live art show and lantern parade.

Urban Exhibitions See local artists display their work in local retail venues, linked by colourful chalk

and mysterious treasure hunt puzzles, you can get lost in local culture through your

local retails venues!

Art Workshops Everyone will be welcome to participate in these simple and creative workshops

which will help to decorate the surrounding trees with beautiful and colourful,

hand-made decorations.

Chalk Art Colourful Chalk Artworks will adorn the streets, form part of the ‘Great Treasure Hunt Puzzle’, and give helpful directions to different areas of the Festival. The public will also be encour-aged to participate with chalks and artist facilitators available on hand so everyone can have a go! Live Art Battles 16 Artists will be selected from registered artists to compete in a round robin and series of quarter and semi final art rounds throughout the Festival. Painting next to the stages to 40 min-ute sets of live music, and with a full audience, artists will be going head to head to win shares of $1000 cash prize monies as well as a holiday and other prizes. – judging commencing after the Lantern Parade. Busking Competition The Busking Competition will run throughout the course of the day. Winners will be announced at 8:30pm at the Lido Cafe and presented with a $500 prize.

Food and Craft Stalls This year, Racecourse Road will hold scores of food and craft stalls! These stalls will include chilli, cheese, chocolate, mulled wine, boutique beers, international cuisine, lights, beanies, scarves and local handicraft. Lantern Parade Summon your creativity and get involved with a lantern making work-

shop! A lantern making workshop at St Augustine’s between 3.00pm

and 6.00pm on the day of the festival and is open to everybody. The

cost is $10 per lantern, including materials and guidance from profes-

sional lantern artists. All participants are welcome to proceed with the

groups in the parade.

Artist Hive was very excited to be involved in the 'Calling the Past project' designed and initiated by the team at callingthepast.com. We saw this as an opportunity to get local artists work and con-tact details out into the pub-lic domain and to experi-ment and challenge conven-tional notions of art and place. Really we are just al-ways seeking participation in projects that can highlight and profile our member art-ists and give rise to opportu-nities and sales. Creating opportunities for local art-ists to make some money that's what we love to do!

Artist-Hive has a long history with Eckersley’s Art store in Edward St. Our artist’s work is displayed in their venue and they sponsor our ongoing creative collaborations from time to time. Other projects on the books included street frontage live art, urban guerilla chalk art promotions and larger chalk art collaborations.

Specifically representing visual artists, Artist Hive is very happy to be working together with Youth Arts Queensland's 'Roundtable ini-tiative' incorporating many peak body organisations in Queensland representing youth and arts. A meeting with the State Arts Minis-ter is scheduled for the 20th of June where we will be making a submission to the Minister concerning new directions, assistance and programs for the arts and youth in Queensland.

Creative Drinks and Artist-hive have been involved in a few collaborative programs recently including a group show/networking evening at Barsoma in the valley a few weeks ago featuring Travis D Hendrix, 5 other Artist Hive artists and 50 artworks. We were also happy to be approached to participate in the recent Spencer laneway program, and look forward to future collaborations together.
