From Dawn’s Desk
By March 1, we will be in the second Sunday in Lent. Our theme for the Lenten
Season is Serving Together as People of the Covenant. In worship we will be exploring
the ways God has called us into covenant and what that means for us today. The color
for Lent is purple signaling a time of introspection, repentance, and trusting God’s for-
giveness empowering us to begin again as disciples of Jesus. Lent, if we
allow it, is a mystical time of transformation and rebirth following the symbolic time
of forty. Whenever we encounter the number forty in a biblical story, we recognize that
it was a significant time of learning and transformation. After forty days and nights of rain and floods,
Noah’s ark floated out of bad times into a freshly washed new world and covenant with the Creator and
creation. The Israelites wandered forty years in the desert to be ready to enter the promised land. Jonah
led the people of Nineveh through forty days of penance and reform. Jesus fasted forty days in the desert
after his baptism.
If you like to check facts, as I do, you will find that from Ash Wednesday to Easter is more than
forty days. It is forty-six. We back out the six Sundays because every Sunday celebrates the resurrection.
Every Sunday is a little Easter as we live in the post resurrection era. We know how the story ends and
begins again with Easter!
Some give up something for Lent. It is a healthy practice of self-discipline if we are truly giving up
something important in our lives that brings comfort and pleasure, but I prefer to couple that with taking
on something. For instance, giving up a meal a day or snacks in between and donating the money that
would be spent to One Great Hour of Sharing. Or taking on a study group to grow spiritually. Or partici-
pating weekly in an outreach of kindness. The possibilities are limitless. What would be challenging and
meaningful for you?
Finally, Lent is a time to come closer to God with renewed commitment. I finish with these words of
Kayla Mueller, who died while held captive by ISIS: “ I remember mom always telling me that all in all
in the end the only one you really have is God. I have come to a place in experience where, in every
sense of the word, I have surrendered myself to our Creator b/c literally there was no one else….+ by
God + by your prayers I have felt tenderly cradled in freefall.”
Grace and peace,
Pastor Dawn
Faithful Stewards Corner
Our thanks to:
Jay Trecartin, for donating and delivering needed plumbing supplies.
Mary Pratt, for baking the new members cake.
If any ministry member has someone to mention for the “Faithful Stewards Corner,” send their
names to Pastor Dawn by the 15th of each month for the Chronicle.

Marching through Lent, into Holy Week and Easter
Looking Ahead to Holy Week and Easter
March 29, Palm Sunday
- 10 am, moving service of worship, “Remember Me” (directed by Gary Trahan)
(We’ll gather on the front steps after worship for the 15th annual all-church
Palm Sunday photo, then we’ll assemble the Easter meal baskets.)
April 2, Maundy Thursday
- 5:30 pm, Agape Meal in Fellowship Hall, with discussion on Meals of Blessing.
- 7 pm, Service of Holy Communion and Tenebrae in the Sanctuary (child care
available). Tenebrae is a very moving service of scripture readings accompanied by the
gradual extinguishing of lights. The readings commemorate the events of the final three
days of Jesus’ life and death. When the sanctuary is in total darkness, it reminds the
worshippers of Jesus’ time in the tomb before his resurrection. At the end of the ser-
vice, one candle is lit as the sign of Easter hope, and the congregation leaves quietly.
April 3, Good Friday
5:15 pm – Cross Walk With Jesus, our third year of this meditative Good Friday experience. We will
start in Brookside's parking lot to begin a walk with some carrying a cross. We will walk in silence,
stopping at certain places along the way to offer prayers and change cross bearers. All are welcome.
April 5, Easter Sunday
6:30 am Sunrise Service on the Manning House Lawn
7:00-9:15 am Easter Breakfast in Fellowship Hall ($5 per person,
$15 family max.; purchase tickets in advance or at the door)

Think Spring: Buy an Easter Flowering Plant
Help us adorn the altar on Easter (April 5) with a profusion of lovely flowering plants –
in memory of a loved one, in honor of a special person or event, or “just because.” If you
would like to donate a plant for Easter Sunday, please fill out the form below and return it
to the church office by Wednesday, March 18. The cost is $13 per plant.

Children to Learn about Special Meals in Church School
The last week of February we started a new Unit called “Meals of Blessing.” The children will be
looking at three meals: the Passover celebrated by the Hebrew people on the eve of their liberation from
slavery in Egypt; the Passover Jesus celebrated with his disciples – an event which Christians later re-
ferred to as Jesus’ last supper; and the Christian sacrament of Holy Communion. We started with a mul-
ti-age Music Workshop with Lisa Brock teaching on February 22. The first week of March we will have
a multi-age Time Out Workshop where the children choose the activities they want to do from several
offered. On March 8 we will go to a regular workshop schedule with Storytelling, Fun and Games, and
Food and People Workshops being offered each week.
On Palm Sunday, the last Sunday in March, there will be a special presentation during worship that
the two older classes will attend. The Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Grade Class will have a
special workshop of their own.
Hunting for Egg Hunt Helpers
We want to have an Easter Egg Hunt again this year (for children in Grade 3
and under). To make this happen we need volunteers to help fill the eggs and to
hide the eggs. We will be filling the eggs Saturday morning (April 4), and the eggs
need to be hidden before the end of worship on Easter Day in order to have the
Easter Egg Hunt after worship. If you can help with this activity, please contact Fran.
A Special Opportunity This Lenten Season
March 8, 11:30 am, location to be announced: YOGA for the FAMILY: Join us following worship
for a little relaxation, stretching, and time with the family as Sarah Duffley, a yoga instructor, leads us
through some family exercises. Come dressed comfortably to worship and plan to stay. Pastor Dawn
will close our time together with a centering meditation.
High School Youth Group to Host Two Special Upcoming Meals
~Meal 1: Corned Beef & Cabbage Lunch, Sunday, March 15, Noon-2 pm
The Brookside Youth Group is again hosting this popular meal as a fundraiser for its program. Get
your corned beef “fix” and support the youth group, too! The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12
and under; $30 max per family.
~Meal 2: Pancake Breakfast on Easter Sunday, April 5, 7:00-9:15 am
Nothing stacks up to Easter morning breakfast at Brookside Church; make it part of your family’s
Easter tradition! Tickets are $5 per person with a $15 family maximum. Purchase your tickets during
Fellowship Hour on Sunday mornings (or at the door), or contact Ellen Tourigny directly at
[email protected] or (603) 854-0684.
Called to Care – Care Packages for College Students
Do you have a child who is currently enrolled in college? If so, please provide us with
their name and mailing address by Sunday, April 5 (Easter), so that the Called to Care
ministry may send them a care package in time for final exams.
If you are willing to bake cookies or bring in other treats for the care packages, please
contact Sarah Duffley at [email protected] or (603) 858-4233. We will be putting
together the care packages on Sunday, April 12 after church.

Study Groups Offer Ways to Grow
~First Opportunity, Mondays through April 6: Delving into the Bible
Pastor Dawn continues the Lenten Study called “Your Bible!” on Monday nights, 6:30-8 pm in the
Lounge. This Lenten study serves as an introduction to the library of books that is the foundation of our
faith. Designed to make the Bible more accessible in eight sessions, Your Bible provides a basic orienta-
tion to the Book, and opens a door of understanding to all other Bible study.
The eight sessions which began on Ash Wednesday are as follows:
1. (2/18) Whole Bible and Themes
2. (2/23) What is the Bible?
3. (3/2) How Did the Bible Come to Be?
4. (3/9) What is the Old Testament About?
5. (3/16) What is the New Testament About?
6. (3/23) How has the Bible Been Preserved and Handed On?
7. (3/30) How Shall We Study the Bible?
8. (4/6) What is the Place of the Bible in Our Lives?
Speak with Pastor Dawn for more information.
~Second Opportunity, Mondays April 13-May 18: Deepening Our Prayer
The next unit of Companions in Christ, "Deepening our Prayer – The Heart of Christ" will meet (as
part of Monday Matters) from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Manning House Parlor on Mondays, April 13 to
May 18. If you would like to know more, or are interested in signing up, please contact Anne Rodman,
[email protected], or 624-5179, so that she can order enough booklets for those attending.
Holy Communion
The sacrament of Communion will be celebrated on Sunday, March 1, served
by: Gary Trahan, George Abbott, Kira Morehouse, and Ellen Tourigny. Assisting
will be Mary Pratt.
Please note, we use gluten-free bread for Communion, so that those who have a
gluten intolerance may participate fully in the sacrament.
Interested in Membership? Want to Schedule a Baptism?
If you would like to become a covenant member of Brookside Congregational Church, please speak
with Pastor Dawn (669-2807, ext. 101 or [email protected]). A special gathering will be planned
when we have a group of folks who have expressed an interest in learning more.
Please speak with Pastor Dawn to make arrangements for Baptism.
Losses Affecting Our Church Family
Carolyn Dunn passed away on January 30. A member of Brookside Church since
February 1992, she is survived by her daughter and son-in law, Judy and Don Waldrupe,
three grandchildren and a great grandchild, and her sister, Vada Albrecht. Please hold
the family in your prayers.
And from Brookside’s Administrative Assistant Nicole Grinnell: Thank you to all
who sent condolences after the February 11 passing of my mother, Thérèse Nelson. She
is now at peace in a better place. Your prayers are very much appreciated.

March to Missions!
This March the newly energized Mission/Outreach Ministry (or MOM!!) is ready to hit
the ground running and kick off the year with exciting opportunities for you to help us
help others, both here in Manchester and around the world.
Filling Easter Baskets to Help Feed Those in Need
Yes ASH Wednesday was February 18th so our Easter basket distribution is fast approaching. We are
again reaching out to four local charities to obtain information about up to 40 families who need help
with feeding themselves this Spring. When we say “family” what do you think of in your mind, one per-
son, thirteen, a couple and some kids, just adults? The answer is, YES! The families that we potentially
serve can go from 1 person to 13 or more (we had a family this large @ Christmas). So we do not know
what we need until we receive the information from the organizations that we support. Through your
efforts we support many more people than you may realize.
This year we are expanding the length of our drive and will have focused collections. Each week we
will focus on collecting one item that is needed in the Easter Baskets. The 1st two weeks we focused on
canned pineapple and canned yams. Then we are also collecting cookies, boxed scalloped potatoes, and
apple juice. Look for the bunnies that just hopped into church with signs reminding you of what is need-
ed and where to drop them off for collection.
Week of 3/1 - boxed scalloped potatoes Week of 3/15 - jug of apple juice
Week of 3/8 - package of cookies
Loaves and Fishes Is March 1
Non-perishable food items and personal-sized toiletries help New Horizons to help those
in need; please add them to your grocery cart when you are able. Thank you.
Please Support “One Great Hour of Sharing” During March
Another event in March is the special collection for One Great Hour of Sharing, which is one of the
four special collections for the UCC throughout the year. These four collections are supported by the
congregation in special donations. Then there is another fund which you may have heard of, “Our
Church’s Wider Mission.” So what is the difference and why is this a good cause to support?
Simply put, “Our Church’s Wider Mission” is an annual gift that is paid for out of the budget from
the MOM. It is for the administrative costs for the UCC. It helps fund supply pastors, pay salary for re-
gional staff and other expenses such as heat and electricity. This is important to remember because “One
Great Hour of Sharing” is the fund which supports disaster relief and missions. Because the administra-
tive costs are paid for via OCWM, all of the donations that you make for OGHS go to relief. You will
see the envelopes during the month of March. On March 8 there will be a special children’s time ex-
plaining what this very special fund does to help others.
An Opportunity to Serve Others
We need a team from Brookside to serve supper at New Horizons’ Soup Kitchen on Tuesday,
March 31, from 4:15 to 6:00 p.m.
To sign up, or to learn more about opportunities to serve at New Horizons, please contact our volun-
teer coordinator, Nancy Popp, at [755-4880] or [email protected].
…March is going to be a busy but exciting month for MOM and, we hope everyone in the church
will work together to ease the sting of hunger and disasters both locally and worldwide.
