Dear Dawn,

The Hillsborough Association of the New Hampshire Conference, United Church of Christ, would like

to congratulate you as the Recipient of the 2014 Good Samaritan Award, presented by the Pastoral

Counseling Service honoring your work with Granite Pathways. They have learned what many of us have known and experienced for many years. Your example of

leadership, your welcoming presence and your participation with Granite Pathways is the same example

you have lived out with the New Hampshire Conference and with the Hillsborough Association. Hear-

ing that the effects of your ministry have been felt and recognized in your community is a joy that the

Committee on Church and Ministry feels should be celebrated. We also extend our congratulations to Brookside Congregational Church United Church of Christ as the

church members were recognized for their ministry to Granite Pathways. The example your congrega-

tion has set to work in cooperation with Granite Pathways to provide safe spaces to offer services to

those in need truly defines what it means to “minister” to others. By providing basic needs of welcome,

safe meeting space, the example of hospitality speaks volumes for all to see as an example of living out

your faith. Please accept our congratulations for this wonderful accomplishment and extend the same to your

This year’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be held at Temple Adath

Yeshurun on Monday, November 24 at 7:00 pm. The Rev. Jami Boyle from

Bethany Chapel will preach. Donations of canned goods and/or money will go

to the food pantry of First United Methodist Church on Valley Street.

Children to Learn about Lydia in New Church School Unit

The book of Acts tells of the spread of the Good News of Jesus throughout the

known world. One of those stories is about Lydia from Thyatira who was a dealer in

purple cloth. The children will be studying about Lydia until Advent. They will come

to know that they can be like Paul and Lydia and share the good news with others.

There will be 5 workshops in this Unit: Art, Bible Skills and Games, Cooking, Science

and Video. Below is an overview of the Story of Lydia that is found in Acts 16:11-15.

The Book of Acts tells of the spread of Jesus’ teachings. In the story of Lydia, we learn about Paul’s

journey to Philippi in Macedonia. Philippi, a Roman colony, was full of people who had never heard of

God, or of Jesus. Lydia, however, was an exception – we’re told she worshiped God, even before Paul

arrived. We’re also told that Lydia was a dealer in purple cloth, a successful business woman who

probably had access to the rich and famous, the only people who could afford to buy such expensive

purple cloth.

Paul told Lydia about Jesus, God opened her heart, and Lydia learned. She believed and then joined

in the work of spreading the Good News. Lydia and her whole household – family members, slaves,

employees, and possibly even friends or acquaintances – were baptized.

When Lydia heard the good news of Jesus’ love, she immediately began to use her gifts and posses-

sions to serve God. She gave Paul and his companions a place to stay and later became a partner with

Paul. There is evidence in Acts and in Paul’s letters that Lydia eventually became a leader in the young

church in Philippi.

Ways to Challenge Yourself Monday Matters #1, November

Joe Forest and Pastor Dawn will co-lead two sessions on “What Does

the Bible Have to Do with Economics?” on November 3 and 17 from 6:30

to 8:00 pm. Explore with Joe and Dawn questions of economics and Biblical

themes. How realistic are the Biblical themes to issues of a global economy or employment?

Monday Matters #2, Preparing for December

Christmas is coming and let’s get ready for it by reading and discussing Anne Perry’s Christmas

novellas. There are 14 titles in this series and 13 are available in the Manchester Library: 13 hard cover,

9 audio books or 4 e-books. These are suspense novels that take place in England at the end of the 18th

century. Each features a person who comes to know the deeper meaning of Christmas through some

upset to their life. They are easy reading and fun and make one think of what is the meaning of Christ-

mas. Read one of Perry’s Christmas books and come ready to share the plot and meaning found in your

book on Monday, December 15 (6:30-8 pm). This will be a fun way to look into the deeper meanings

of Christmas. Any questions, call Fran.

Companions in Christ

Companions in Christ is a small group experience in Spiritual Formation. There will be five units of

five (or more) weeks each. How will Companions in Christ help you grow spiritually? Through the spir-

itual disciplines of prayer, scripture, ministry, worship, study and Christian conversation! These means

of grace are the common ways in which Christ meets people, renews their faith, and deepens their lives

together in love. Please consider joining us as we learn and grow together.

The first unit, Embracing the Journey: The Way of Christ, will begin Sunday, November 2 and

meet weekly through December 14. We will meet from 8:15 am to 9:45 am in Classroom C (under the

Chapel). Anyone who is interested, whether Brooksider or not, is welcome to participate.

of your interest, and/or for more information.

Making Meaningful Music Together

It's hard to believe, but it's almost THAT time of year again! Be sure you mark

your calendars for our annual Christmas Concert – a little earlier this year on Sun-

day, December 14 at 2:00 pm! It will again feature all our choirs, but will be a little

different than past years with a focus on Jesus, the Light of the World. We truly

hope you will plan to join us! A free-will offering will be received to support the music ministry, and

anyone able to do, please bring non-perishable items to donate to New Horizons.

In the meantime, I was excited to have Lisa Brock share her beautiful voice during our worship on

Columbus Day weekend, and we have new members in our Junior and Bell Choirs, and are excited to

share what we've been learning during upcoming services. Junior Choir will be singing on November 9

(parents: we will rehearse at 9:30) and Bells will be playing November 2 and 23.

For our church school friends, whether singing is your thing or not, we want as many of you as

possible to participate on Christmas Eve. Please be in touch with me if you want to join in!

Listen Up: Here’s the Low-down on Brookside’s “Elevator”

Did you know that we actually don’t have an elevator here? It is technically a lift or a

chair lift, plain and simple. After a recent problem which required a repair call, we were

told that our “lift” was designed only for moving people to other levels, and not as a

freight elevator. When “stuff” is put in it, there is gradual movement and shifting which

ultimately throws things off and causes the lift to stop working – not a good thing.

What this means is that we all need to re-train ourselves to not use the lift to move items from floor

to floor, and we have placed signs on all the access doors as a reminder. Please observe this guideline

and keep the lift functioning for its intended purpose, to allow people with physical challenges to have

full access to all levels of our building. Thank you.

Church Tour Scheduled for November 30

Learn about some of Brookside’s secrets during this tour of the Church and Manning House. Bill

Hoysradt will be your knowledgeable tour guide – meet him by the Coke machine in Fellowship Hall

around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, November 30.

Help Provide Holiday Family Meal Baskets

Brookside has a wonderful tradition of working together with community agencies

to provide Holiday Meals for families in need during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Your involvement and commitment to support the larger Manchester community is so

very much appreciated.

This year Mission Ministry is collecting food to provide for 62 baskets to be distributed the Monday

before Thanksgiving. We encourage you to sign up in Fellowship Hall on Sundays to bring nonperisha-

ble foods (canned vegetables, fresh potatoes, fresh carrots, stuffing, cranberry sauce, apples, cookies, hot

chocolate), or to consider donating funds equal to a holiday meal basket.

Food items need to be in Fellowship Hall by the end of Fellowship Hour on Sunday, November 16

so that an order can be placed for the remaining food needed to fill the baskets on the following Sunday,

November 23. We invite you to help in setting up Fellowship Hall Saturday morning, November 22

starting at 9:00 am. Help is also needed from 8:30 am on Monday, November 24 to distribute baskets.

Thanksgiving Breakfast for a Cause

Mission Ministry encourages members of Brookside to attend the 21st Annual New Horizons

Thanksgiving Breakfast on Tuesday, November 25, 7:15-9:00 am at the Radisson–Center of New

Hampshire. This breakfast brings together supporters of New Horizons to celebrate the start of the holi-

day season and simultaneously raises funds for the Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry, Homeless Shelters, and

Loaves and Fishes

Food donations have been down 18% this year while there has been a 7% increase

in Food Pantry need at New Horizons. The Mission and Stewardship Ministries thank

the members of Brookside for their ongoing support of New Horizons through monthly

Loaves and Fishes offerings. Our next offering will be Sunday, November 2.

Many Thanks to Soup Kitchen Volunteers

September 30th was Brookside's night to serve dinner at New Horizons Soup Kitchen. Thank you to

all those who volunteered: Leigh Polish, Kate Stantial, Pastor Dawn, Tom (pile it on) Cleary, Sis Dunn,

Jeff Rapson, and Marylou Bissonnette. A very special thank you to Pete Lovejoy who is the recipient of

the Golden Chopstick award for serving over 100 plates of spaghetti with a pair of tongs.

Brookside serves whenever there is a fifth Tuesday in the month. The next date is December 30, so

mark your calendars and plan to join us in serving up food, fun, and frivolity. Please contact Nancy

Banding Together to Fight Hunger

The Empty Bowls event on October 5 raised $8,700 with 425 bowls sold.

This year’s Religious Response to Hunger generated a total of 475 bags of food for New Horizons.

Thank you to all who donated/participated to help make these important events possible.

Holy Communion

The sacrament of Communion will be celebrated on Sunday, November 2,

served by: Ellen Tourigny, Gary Trahan, Chris Taylor, Anne Rodman, Denise Forest,

and Scott Milne, assisted by George Abbott.

Please note, we use gluten-free bread for Communion, so that those who have a

gluten intolerance may participate fully in the sacrament.

A warm welcome to Susan and James Milne, parents of Scott, who officially joined

Brookside as covenant members on October 19.

Help Us Make a Great Fair!

The Christmas Fair is just around the corner! We are still in need of donations for the jewelry table,

house plants, baked goods and beans. If you have an interest in helping, we could use some help on Fri-

day November 7th with set up, elevator operators during the fair on November 8th, and some folks to

help clean up after the fair from about 3pm until 5pm. Please call Nancy

on Friday the 7th. Please label your items, i.e., apple bread, contains

Seeking Donations for Raffle Table at the Fair

Once again we will have a raffle table at the fair on November 8.

We are looking for items to raffle. If you have a favorite restaurant or

store or service, why not ask them for a gift certificate or perhaps make

up a gift basket? We have a letter you can present to businesses which will verify that you represent the

Women’s Union of Brookside if they require verification. See Fran Hakenson for the letter. Please have

all donations to Fran at the church by Monday, November 3.

Women’s Union will not meet in November, but make sure you have December 11 marked on your

calendar for our Christmas program and Yankee Swap. More details will be in the December Chronicle.

Interfaith Women of NH: Save the Date in December

The annual Interfaith Women's holiday event will take place at 7 pm on Monday, December 8,

at Temple Adath Yeshurun. Its title is "Rejoice and be Glad" and will again feature the group Aksara.

“No Green Bananas” Men’s Group May “A-peel” to You

This group of retired Brookside men meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of

the month at 9 am at Blake’s Restaurant (Maple & Webster Streets) to enjoy

breakfast and discussion. Join them on Tuesdays, November 4 & 18 for good

Hundred-dollar Word

During his lifetime, English poet and novelist Rudyard Kipling achieved

both fame and fortune. One day a newspaper reporter approached him and

said, “Mr. Kipling, somebody calculated that the money you make from your

writings amounts to more than $100 a word.”

The reporter pulled out a $100 bill from his pocket, gave it to Kipling and said, “Here, now give me

one of your hundred-dollar words.”

Kipling looked at the money, put it in his pocket and said, “Thanks!”

Diabetic Update: Do you have questions about diabetes? Would you find it helpful to get some up to

date information about living with diabetes? The CMC Parish Nurse program is presenting a program on

Thursday, November 20 from 10:00-11:00 am in Fellowship Hall. There is no charge to attend.

Raise the Rock! Help Support Granite Pathways

A Music Festival featuring Steamed Heat and Room to Move will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15

from 5-9 pm at the Millyard Museum, 200 Bedford Street, Manchester. Tickets are $25 and there will be

Seeking Hosts for SNHU’s Thanksgiving Hosts Program

Southern New Hampshire University is seeking hosts willing to invite pairs

of international students to join your family’s Thanksgiving celebration. Many

international students are eager for the chance to visit an American family and

learn more about our culture and traditions. Newer arrivals feel most comforta-

ble when they can bring a fellow student, which is why SNHU looks for folks who can accommodate

two or more guests. SNHU has more than 850 international students studying at the Manchester campus;

while they come from about 70 different countries, more than half come from China, Saudi Arabia, or

India.

The reactions of both the students and families who’ve participated in the past have been very posi-

tive. From hosts: “had a terrific time”; “fantastic day”; “fit right in with my family”; “enlightening”;

“great experience for the entire family”; “something I will never forget”. Students have said: “spent a

really wonderful and unforgettable time”; “I learned about American people”; “we had conversation like

friends”; “my family back home were very happy for me”; “they let me help prepare the dinner (or the

table)”; “I always wanted to visit with an American family”; “I hope I can do this again”.

If you are interested in inviting two or more international students to join your family’s Thanksgiv-

ing celebration, please complete the host family application at the www.snhu.edu SNHU website (link to

the application under Campus Life, then International Student Services, then ISS Forms & Resources,

then “For the Community”) and return it by November 9th to Debbie Donnelly at SNHU at

d.donnelly@snhu.edu or ISS Office, 2500 N. River Rd., Manchester, NH 03106. In mid-November after

receiving host and student applications, Debbie will be in touch with names and contact information for

the students you’ll be hosting for the day, so that you can reach them to coordinate plans.

This is a truly wonderful opportunity for all who are involved. Please consider opening up your

home to share this day when we give thanks for all that is good in our lives.

Give of Your Time, Talent, and Treasure Your Stewardship Committee Asks:

WHY do you participate in the life of Brookside?

WHY do you give to work of the church?

WHAT does Brookside mean to you?

These are important questions we all will be considering as we participate in our annual stewardship

campaign. If you are reading this, you are invested in our church and in God’s work. Consider how

deeply you want to be invested in God’s work at Brookside Church as we raise the funds for 2015.

Now through November 16 we as the members and friends of Brookside Congregational Church,

United Church of Christ will prayerfully consider the upcoming year and each family will decide what

they can pledge to the work of God through Brookside Church. You will be receiving a letter in the mail

with a Pledge Certificate. Consider the amount you want to pledge. After you fill it out you can mail it

in, or put it in the offering plate on any Sunday between now and November 16.

The Stewardship Committee

Have you considered participating more actively and prayerfully in Brookside’s church life? Once

again this year we are in need of members wanting to serve and fulfill their calling and participation in

the church’s life. The Mission Ministry and Christian Formation are especially in need of help and new

members. Ministry meetings are usually once per month and perhaps an occasional sub-group meeting.

Other key roles such as representation at a State level are also areas where members can make a sig-

nificant difference. We are looking for up to six delegates to the NHCUCC conference. We can have

one candidate under age 25 and we also need three delegates for the Hillsborough Association. Please

note these are one-year terms, and go on continuously if there is continued interest by the delegate.

Please share your level of interest with me, Jeff Rapson; I can usually be reached on my cell at

660-1119 and if busy please leave a voice message. Feel free to reach out to me before or after church;

I look forward to hearing where you’d like to participate.

munity who need them, the revenue generated by their sale furthers the charitable and religious missions

of Brookside.
