My Mayoral YearOne of the questions I keep asking myself is, do any young people havethe dream of becoming mayor of their town? I certainly didn’t andwould have said ‘who, me? Not possible!’ But how wrong can you be? When we originally moved to Bewdley I felt overwhelmed with thelocals friendliness and helpfulness. Never before had I had theexperience of just popping to the local shops for maybe a loaf ofbread, then finding that it was taking up to an hour before I returnedhome, because everyone wanted to stop and chat. It was because I felt that Bewdley was giving me so much I wanted to

give something back. I joined the Bewdley Chamber of Trade and after a while Chamber Maids was formed.Following that, I was asked to stand for Bewdley Town council (“Only one meeting a month”, Iwas told, not so….) and thanks to the people of Bewdley I was elected, and as they say, therest is history. Many people have asked me what were the high lights of my year; a hard question, aseverything we have attended has been enlightening and enjoyable, from judging iguanas for thecarnival to meeting Prince Charles and Camilla, but the most poignant has to be the manytalents of the young people in the Wyre Forest area. The Wyre Forest Young Voices, the YouthMakes Music, going to Malvern to see all the very talented young people from the ages of 5 to17, tug at your heart strings. Then there are the Civic Awards, a chance to pay tribute to ourunsung heroes of this town. In-between times, when I’ve had the chance, I have raised funds for my mayor’s charity, monieswhich will go to the Bewdley Scout and Guide groups. We’ve had a very full and varied year, ayear we will look back on with many happy memories and with feelings of having beinghonoured to have the chance to represent this town.I’d like finish with many thanks to all the organisations who invited us to their variousactivities and fund raising. They made us feel so welcome. They too work hard all year roundto put on events for this town and that’s what makes Bewdley such a very special place. Barbara Stallwood

Cheque presentation by PTA

Bewdley First School’s PTA has raised £10,000 fora multi-use games area for use by the school andafter school clubs. It will help promote healthylifestyles and enhance their sports facilities. It willinclude two courts/areas that will be fenced off andmarked out for football, netball, basketball andcricket and other sport uses. “Our fund raising activities during the year includeda Christmas fayre, car boots, re-cycling discos, film nights, a big quiz, a sponsored quest and asummer. fayre” said Susie Burrows of the PTA.Paul Roper, headteacher is seen receiving the cheque from some of the members of the PTA.

Editorial

Have you ever won any prizes? The subject came up the other day when a group of us were chatting

over a cup of tea and one of our number told us she’d just won four packets of washingpowder.

“Wow!” we exclaimed. “Hitting the big time!” Going round the circle we all confessedto having gone through life untouched by the capricious hand of fortune. I did try toimpress with the time I won a chromium-plated naked lady lampshade holder in atombola, but it seemed that none of us had won the lottery or inherited a mansion inSussex from a previously unknown aunt. I decided to look further and combed thestreets of Bewdley to see if anyone could improve on our failure. The results you will seeinside, but do write and tell me if you’ve fared better than my original group.

Elsewhere in the magazine you will see other local news that has nothing to do with luckbut everything to do with hard work. The Regatta will have taken place and all the well-muscled young people will have departed back to their own clubs; we have news of a winby the rowing club’s Veterans, and of some intrepid sailors from Bewdley. There havebeen some less watery successes; at the Forestry Centre the new Community DiscoveryCentre is taking shape; we have a new nursery facility in the Riverside Chidren’s Centreand, a really cheering sight, several new shops opened in the town.

Well, I’m off to fill in some coupons and complete the slogan in my own words. Younever know; I might win a dream house in the Bahamas.

Hidden Treasures atBewdley Museum

As Collections & Interpretation Officer atBewdley Museum it is part of myresponsibility to look after the 20,000items housed in the museum’s collection.

The collection reflects this and hasartefacts relating to pewter making, leathermanufacture and the Wyre Forestindustries of besom broom making, basketmaking and charcoal burning.

The museum is also home to theKidderminster Museum & Art Gallery

collection which ranges from geology andarchaeology to costume and paintings.

Because of the size of the museum only afraction of these items can be on display atany one time.

We address this by holding temporaryexhibitions which feature different parts ofthe collection.

This month, the museum’s herbaria (plantspecimen) collection can be viewed in‘Flora, Fauna and Fossils’ which runs until9th August.

Low Carbon CommunitiesBewdley Development Trusthas so far run five workshopsin and around Bewdleyinvolving 30 people workingout their current carbonfootprint and exploring waysof both reducing this and

exploring the use of renewable energy in the future.

The next phase of the project will make this opportunitymore widely available and link into the emerging BewdleyTransition Group which is forming to explore ways inwhich Bewdley can respond positively to the challenges ofpeak oil and climate change.

This project is one of 18 projects stemming from the Growwith Wyre Landscape Partnership project. TheDevelopment Trust is also exploring the use of woodfuel, sourced locally, to power boilers in homes, businesses andcommunity buildings.

If you are interested in coming to the Bewdley TransitionGroup or would like any further information about theproject please contact Peter Miller at BDT on 01299405516 or email [email protected].

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home tofind and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work isover, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle.Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expandyour horizons?

If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings sosee if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we caneven arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for aninformal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts- just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like tobe able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Kidderminster Magistrates Courts throw open their doors!

This is your ‘once in a century’ opportunity to experience a

Youth Court as it would have operated in 1909,

View an actual case from that year which is recreated in front of you.

Sit in on a mock youth court for 2009 [usually closed to the public]

Watch how the Youth Court sentences young offenders nowadays.

Vote as to which punishment the offender receives.

Ask the question you have always wanted to of local youth justice practitioners.

See actual prosecutors and defences lawyers in action, aided by workers from the Youth

Offending Service; all under the control of course of Kidderminster Bench of Youth

Magistrates.

Tour the cells of the court and see what it is like inside a prison van,

 and even experience being ‘tagged’

....plus many displays by local organisations which work with young people in difficulties,

Put the date in your diary now!

Twitchers Wanted‘Twitchers’ are required for the spotting of a particular and not very rare (sorry to say) typeof thieving magpie, whose habitat is anywhere and everywhere, usually in the vicinity ofproperty that doesn’t belong to them. They may be driving around or walking; they could be pretending to be lost or looking for adog. Their imagination is boundless; make no mistake that they are serious in their intent ofrelieving you of your property and money. They use vans and pick ups, large or small; in factany car will do. They need to travel to get to us, and that is their FIRST weakness. We needto be aware of strangers and when we see them think “I wonder what they are up to?”Neighbourhood Watch relies on the good people of any town, village or farm to let theirLocal Policing Team know about suspicious incidents. They need our help. However, we arenot just helping them; we are helping ourselves to prevent crime in our area and home. Many people live in fear of crime, but they shouldn’t because we can all do something aboutit and lots of people do. All it needs is a phone call to 0300 333 3000 to let the Policeknow any information, however small. Have you seen a vehicle that has been lurking? If so try and get the registration number andthe make and colour. If people come to your door, do not let them in, even if they say yourchimney is falling off.All genuine callers will have an Identity Card and should produce it. If you are in any doubttell them to call back and report it to the police straight away.

Your Local Policing Team is there to help you to avoid becoming a victim ofcrime and to feel secure in your home. Help them to help you. Why not join Neighbourhood Watch, have the signs and let people know “WEARE NOT STANDING FOR IT ANY MORE”.

Rod Wilson, Chair of Wyre Forest Neighbourhood Watch

It’s holiday time! We’re now, allegedly, into the holidayseason for gardeners so if the lawn is cut,the irrigation or alternative system isworking, somebody is calling round to pickthe flowers, and harvest the ripened crops, then you can pack your bags and go. However for the serious minded now isalso the time to plan ahead and continuegeneral maintenance. Dead head flowers, spray against pestsespecially aphids, disbud where large flowerheads are required for entry to the autumnflower shows in the area. The last of thebulbs should be dug up and believe it or notdaffodils and other bulbs for next springshould be going into the ground or pots.

Perennials grown from seed should beplanted into sheltered areas for growing on;the greenhouse will need its pre-winteroverhaul. Sowing of seeds will see youputting in spring cabbage and althoughwinter is still a long way off the sproutsneed to be planted; but it’s also not too lateto get some lettuce going for a winter crop. Now is a good time to be taking cuttingsfrom herbs such as bay, lavender, mint androsemary etc; put into sandy soil to grow.Indeed this time of the year is just right fortaking cuttings, simple propagation in sandysoil will suit hydrangeas, most shrubs, geraniums and fuchsias. Finally if there is time, before the BBQ andice creams, just have a look at the lawn tosee if areas need to be rejuvenated orrepaired.Stuart Williams

Dear Editor,

I’ve been following yourcorrespondence aboutlitter with interest.

I’ve come to theconclusion that it ismostly kids who throwdown their litter, becausewhen I walk down WyreHill I see lots of sweetpapers and those horriblelong thin lolly wrappers.

I would like to know whythe manufacturers puteverything in plastic.

Couldn’t they use paper, then at least they wouldeventually rot.

By the way, I do pick themup – a good handful a day.But it would be evenbetter if they weren’tthrown down in the firstplace.

Support our soldiers in Afghanistan

At the last Town Council meeting we were addressed by Mrs. Susan Leake, the motherof a young soldier serving in Afghanistan. She told us of a scheme to send to men andwomen serving in places such as Afghanistan, parcels containing basic items we take forgranted, such as tooth paste, which they are not able to obtain over there. The entire Council agreed that we should do all we can to support those who arerisking their lives daily. If anyone is willing to donate any items such as toothpaste, soap, and any such creaturecomforts which we take for granted, they should contact the Mayor's Secretary KarenRaine on 01299 400157 or email on [email protected] and makearrangements to deliver their gift to the Guildhall. We are waiting to be contacted by the organisation that has been set up to have theparcels delivered to these soldiers, many of whom do not have families to send themsuch items.I do sincerely hope the Town will respond generously to this appeal.

Councillor Derek Killingworth, Mayor of Bewdley

OctoberFest 2009As we enjoy the summer weather (am I tempting fatehere?) it is that time of year again to remind you that allthe festival fringe events throughout the month ofOctober will be summarised as OctoberFest.Last year 8000 flyers were distributed throughout theWyre Forest and beyond and many said that they weresurprised how much is going on in the town. There isalways great music in the pubs around the town and lastyear’s blues event at the Packhorse was a welcomeaddition. However, the one area missing is comedy. This year we are ahead of ourselves as a number ofpeople have already told us about their plans including aPerformance Poet, a Cricket Dinner at the RoyalForesters, a Petanque competition, an Art Exhibition atthe Quay Gallery, Creative Writing at the Museum, Applepressing & Cider festival, and a French Market &Pumpkin festival at the end of the month. So get your thinking caps on and let us know what youare planning so that your event can be included in thisyear’s flyer. Received this very week:

“Just a note to say how pleased I am tohave spotted your name in the YourCommunity section of The Shuttle and tohave leaned about the "drop in" sessions youoffer at All Saints' Church Wribbenhall onMondays.

After many very uncomfortable years withincreasingly distressing immobility I havebeen diagnosed - officially - as havingOsteoarthritis.

I noticed that representatives from ArthritisCare would be at the church. It was apleasure-and a great psychological boost-totalk with "fellow sufferers". They where ableto furnish me with informative literatureand, importantly, personal experiences ofthis awful condition.

My experience of your "Monday initiative"has been a very good one; not only anexcellent use of the facilities at the Churchbut also a very welcoming atmosphere, promoted by the lovely Monday Girls, plustheir very good tea and (chocolate) biscuits.I do hope that others leaving your sessionsfeel as uplifted and generally supported as Idid."

(Thanks to Pauline -- a Bewdley resident).

This letter was received just a few daysfollowing a lovely phone call from agentleman who had "popped in" to our Aid

For the Older Person Day. He just had toring and tell me that he had sorted fourdifferent problems at one go, which calmedhis concerns and has made his life muchmore bearable.

Great testimonies and I am grateful for thetime they both took to letting us know. BUThow many more of those resident in ourlocal & wider communities are struggling tolive, trying to cope with medical, emotional, life shattering experiences that are provingdifficult, if not virtually impossible, to acceptand live with? And, I wonder, of those howmany have taken the time to accept theopen hand that our/this project offers? Haveyou?

If only we could reach every one.

We are, as you can read, making a differencein people's lives and it is this knowledge thatdrives us to carry on and make sure asmuch information, support, friendship &advice is available; the Monday Girls lookforward to meeting you on one of theMondays, if only for a cup of tea or coffeeand an opportunity to catch up on yournews.

There is never any charge, just a desire tobring light where & when darkness falls oryou have news to be shared and enjoyed. Docheck our posters/ report in "The Shuttle"and do join us on your next free Monday.

really Counts! On June 14th a crew ofBewdley rowers broughtGold Medals home fromthe National VeteransChampionships held inNottingham. They rowedin the Over 55 coxlessfour category at HolmePierrepoint on the vastpurpose-built lake, whichhas several lanes abreast

of each other. This means that up to sixboats can race simultaneously, giving a verydifferent feel from most regattas where thewidth of the river only accommodates twoboats together. It was an exciting race -1000m final - and our rowers lead from thestart, but did have to find extra powertowards the end to fend off a challenge. To see these gentlemen in action, just take astroll by the river at 7.30am on a Sunday!

Bewdley Open Studios 2009The third annual Bewdley Open Studios art event took place over the weekend of 13-14thJune. This time the throngs of art-loving visitors walking round were blessed with fineweather.

Over 50 artists participated at some 14 sites in Bewdley, mostly concentrated at theMuseum and the centre. Large numbers of Bewdley residents and people from outside cameinto town. 2,500 visits to the Museum were recorded over the two days. With theimprovements effected during the winter, the Museum was able to host many more artists,in addition to the resident artists and craft persons. Painters, sculptors, photographers andspecialists in ceramic art, textiles, etching, stained glass and wood were on hand to discusstheir work, some of them actually working on a piece over the weekend. Four workshops, arranged for the weekends before and after the event, were well attended. Two of ourartists, Cynthia Pearson and Judith Price, donated superb pieces as raffle prizes and all thetickets were sold. Cynthia has now retired from the organising committee and will be sorelymissed.

With raffle profits and 10% commission on sales, we expect that we shall again be able tocontribute well over £1,000 to Friends’ funds. However, even without this “profit” the eventis worthwhile for the enjoyment experienced by visitors and artists alike.

Brass RubbingThe Friends are delighted to offerdrop-in Brass Rubbing sessions inthe museum education room everyWednesday afternoon (1pm to4pm) and Sundays (10.30am-4pm)throughout the summer.

This is a chance to use some ofthe museum's collection of largerbrasses and make a reallyprofessional rubbing on blackpaper with gold, silver or copper

coloured crayons – a small charge will apply, guidancewill be given by trained volunteers.

There may be additional days in the school holidays, please look out for the information boards outside themuseum or ring the museum for further information.(403573).

We are always on the lookout for more volunteers fore.g. the brass rubbing, gallery stewards, air raid shelterguides etc.

Please ring the museum if you have any spare time andwould like to help.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 29 JUNE 2009 “Support Our Soldiers”Having heard a member of the public make representations about the “Support our Soldiers”scheme, Councillors agreed that they would wish to be associated with it and on a personallevel would volunteer to promote it within Bewdley. Support our Soldiers operates in varioustowns across Britain and provides support to serving Army personnel eg those presently inAfghanistan. It involves members of the public collecting together small items such astoiletries or magazines which can be put into shoeboxes or small parcels and sent off. This isa real morale booster and is especially appreciated by those soldiers who may not havefamilies back home. More information about the scheme is to be obtained from Bromsgrovewho already have a similar scheme up and running. Pedestrianisation of Severnside NorthThe Mayor received a Petition from certain residents in Severnside North asking for it to bepedestrianised. This is not the first time that this issue has arisen. The road is very popularwith visitors at all times of the year. With tables and chairs now in place along parts of thepavement and by the railings, pedestrians find it easiest to walk in the road. However, as notall residents and businesses along there had back entrances, they would still need to gainaccess for loading and unloading and for emergency service vehicles. Though desirable froman amenity point of view it was unlikely that the Highway Authority or the EmergencyServices would support a total ban on vehicles. Consequently the Council agreed toinvestigate pedestrianisation allowing access at limited times and for certain purposes only.Town Centre painting of BuildingsCouncillors had received many complaints from members of the public about the colour ofthe exterior painting of a shop in Load Street who thought it was out of keeping with theremainder of the buildings there. On the positive side, an empty shop had been filled and wastrading but on the other, the colour was not to everyone’s taste. However, having checkedthe legal position there was apparently nothing in law which could be done quickly by theCouncil to require the owner to change the colour. Flood Relief FundingCouncillors had been interested in a report that gone to Wyre Forest District Councilsetting out how, following the floods in 2007, monies from the Government and otheragencies amounting to £401,688.69 had been spent and how much was left for futureprojects. They agreed the Town Clerk should write to the District Council to get a full breakdown of the figures and to ensure that local volunteer Flood Action Groups were being fullysupported.
