Hospice and hospital plan research after winning second Rigby AwardA £50,000 research project that will look atnew ways of delivering cancer care is to takeplace in Stratford.
Clinicians at South Warwickshire NHS FoundationTrust and The Shakespeare Hospice will lead theproject that is being funded by businessman Sir PeterRigby.
It is the second time that the two organisations haveworked together. Previously, they developed a pro-posal to help cancer patients and survivors managefatigue and support them in returning to work.
This vital project will help patients to maximisetheir wellbeing and regain a sense of normality atwhat is often a difficult time.
The funding for their latest project comes from thesecond round of the Rigby Award — a £250,000, five-year pot of cash that has been set aside by Sir Peter tofund medical research.
It was announced in 2015 at the same time as theStratford-based businessman donated £250,000 to theStratford Hospital £1million Appeal.
Angie Arnold, chief executive at The ShakespeareHospice, said: “We are delighted to receive this RigbyAward and extremely grateful to the Rigby Founda-tion for the generous prize.
“This innovative model is not used anywhere else,so we have a real opportunity to make a difference topeople living with or overcoming cancer.
“The new Stratford Hospital is a fantastic facilityand the Shakespeare Hospice is thrilled that such asignificant investment has been made in providingfirst class cancer services to our local communities.”
Professor Diane Playford, of Warwick MedicalSchool, said: “I am very grateful that the Rigby Foun-dation has chosen to support this exciting initiative. Ifeel proud and excited to be implementing a dedicatedvocational rehabilitation service that will improve thelives of cancer survivors.”
Glen Burley, chief executive at South WarwickshireNHS Foundation Trust, added: “This support from theRigby Foundation helps us to champion innovation incancer care.
“We have already seen how much the new RigbyUnit at Stratford Hospital is going to benefit patientsand I am very pleased that we are working in closepartnership with the Shakespeare Hospice to enhancecancer services in South Warwickshire.”
The successful bidder for this year’s grant wasannounced at Stratford Hospital recently after presen-tations were made to a panel of judges.

On the same night updates were given on the previousyear’s recipients, which included research on outpatientinduction chemotherapy; research into if the one-stop nodalassessment improves the detection of lymph node metastasesin colorectal cancer; work on the prediction of rectal tumourresponse to chemoradiotherapy on diffusion weighted MRI;and research on early breast cancer and its association withvitamin D deficiency.
Sir Peter Rigby said: “In addition to supporting the estab-lishment of the new cancer unit, we wanted to make a longerterm commitment to the work of the cancer units through anaward which enabled healthcare professionals at both War-wick and Stratford to explore their ideas and visions for inno-vative research and initiatives in cancer related fields.
“This has been well received and already several suggestedactivities have been financed and are underway.
“This year’s award links the hospitals to the work of TheShakespeare Hospice, an increasingly important relationshipas some future services will be delivered in the home as wellas in specialist hospital units.”
The cancer unit at Stratford Hospital, similar to WarwickHospital’s Aylesford Unit, carries Mr Rigby’s name andtreated its first patient in August.

FIVE men were arrested in a carwith cans of spray paint near toa Motorail storage site wheregraffiti artists had caused£10,000 worth of damage torailway carriages.
But the only one of the five to turnup at court says the others may havehad spray cans, but that he had no ideawhat they were planning to do.
Juan Manuel Sanchez Bada pleadednot guilty at Warwickshire Magis-trates’ Court in Leamington to pos-sessing a large quantity of spray paintcans with intent to use them to causecriminal damage.
It is alleged he and the other fourhad the spray cans at Long Marston insouth Warwickshire on 30th June, intending to damage propertybelonging to Motorail Logistics Ltd.
Prosecutor John Bartlett explained:
“Long Marston has a large storagearea, and part of it is used for thestorage of railway carriages.”
He said graffiti was a problem at thesite, and the cost of respraying car-riages found to have been ‘tagged’around that time has been put at£10,000.
“This gentleman and others werearrested at the scene. They have got ahire car which has been used to travelto the scene, and in the boot are fluo-rescent spray paint cans.”
But Mr Bartlett stressed: “Thecharge is not that any of them causedthat graffiti, but that they had thespray cans ready to do so.”
He added that the prosecution didnot consider the case needed to be
dealt with in the crown court, and thechairman of the bench Graham Hol-lowell said they would retain jurisdic-tion in the magistrates’ court.
Explaining Sanchez Bada’s case, his solicitor Colin Charvill said: “Hisdefence is that he was with others whomay have had some spray cans, buthad no idea what they were going todo with them, and had nothing to dowith it.”
The case was adjourned for trial, and Sanchez Bada, aged 25, ofDuckett Street, London, was grantedbail.
Bench warrants were issuedwithout bail for the arrest of the fourwho had failed to attend the hearing –Antonio Bernal Gomez, 37, and DarioBueno Valdivielso, 22, who both livein London, Pablo Almendros Tem-prano, 37, from Madrid, and GermanAnso Perdiguer, 24, from Barcelona.

GREEN-FINGERED WoottonWawen residents are celebrating theconstruction of a new car parkingarea at a popular community allot-ments.
The car park, at the allotments offWawensmere Road, has been funded byaffordable housing developer BouyguesUK in partnership with Waterloo Housingand the Warwickshire Rural Housing Asso-ciation.
Liz Major, secretary of the WoottonWawen Allotments and Garden Associa-tion (WWAGA), has been campaigning fora proper parking area at the allotmentssince 2001.
Liz said: “Parking has always beenrestricted to one car and it’s hard to findsomewhere to leave your car which doesn’taffect the neighbouring houses.
“When the weather’s good, there can behalf a dozen cars at the allotments.
“We gained permission to create a carpark around ten years ago but the Associa-
tion has never had enough funds. When wefound out that the work would be done aspart of the new housing development, wewere so excited because we’d waited for itfor so long.”
A disused area of land at the bottom ofthe allotments has been made into the carparking area which has been designed inkeeping with its surroundings. It lies justinside double gates, creating safe andsecure parking for residents tending theirplots.
Liz added: “I’m absolutely delighted thatthe work has been done.
“I really didn’t think it would everhappen and it’s going to make a huge dif-ference to us all.”
Bouygues UK is currently building 14ultra-low energy homes next to land next tothe A3400.
ARCHBISHOP Bernard Longley cele-brated a Mass of Thanksgiving at OurLady and St Michael, Shipston, onSunday, 1st October, to mark the 25thanniversary of the consecration of thechurch.
The newly restored and redecoratedchurch was filled with parishionersfrom Brailes and Shipston and was fol-lowed by a lunch in the Parish Centre.
Our Lady and St Michael was built in1847 in Puginesque style as theAnglican Chapel of Shipston Work-house and was purchased by the Arch-diocese in 1978 in a derelict state.
It was restored using voluntarylabour by parishioners and finally con-secrated on 28th September 1992 byBishop Terence Brain. When St Philip’sChurch, Ilmington, was closed in 2013
several items of furnishing including acarved stone reredos and stained glasswindows by A W Pugin were trans-ferred to Shipston.

MOTORING NEWSYour ideas to cope withdemand from e-vehiclesFOR electric vehicles to continue with theirincreasing rates of predicted uptake, the chal-lenge of local electricity network capacity atpeak times needs to be overcome, and a new ini-tiative is set to aid this situation: opening up datafrom local substations.
Currently, electricity network operators don’t haveenough information about how much spare capacitythere is on local electricity networks, which makes it dif-ficult to know whether a cluster of EVs charging at peaktimes will push the demand over the limit.
The OpenLV project will, for the first time, open updata from local substations, so that Distribution NetworkOperators (DNOs), and third parties such as businessesand academia, will have more information about whethernetworks can cope with rising EV numbers.
If the data highlights a potential capacity issue, thenother initiatives could be implemented — such as smartcharging, vehicle to grid technology, energy storage, orjoining networks together — in preference to morecostly and disruptive infrastructure reinforcement works.
The OpenLV project, led by project partners WesternPower Distribution and EA Technology, is inviting thesubmission of ideas for how data from local electricitynetworks could be used to develop new apps to helpmanage the charging of increasing numbers of EVs, aswell as for other uses.
Mark Dale, innovation manager at Western PowerDistribution, said: “The OpenLV project is making localelectricity network data ‘open access’ for the first evertime.
“This presents a great opportunity for smart thinkingand innovation. We’re inviting people, ranging fromcommunity groups to industry stakeholders, to come upwith novel ideas for apps that can make use of this data.”
Richard Potter, EA Technology’s OpenLV projectmanager, added: “We’re at an exciting point where dif-ferent sectors such as automotive, energy and IT haveopportunities to come together to help the UK movetowards a smart electricity grid.
“Innovative ideas about apps that could offer peoplebenefits are welcomed from all sectors, as well as fromthe energy industry itself.”
Organisations or individuals with ideas for apps thatcould be developed as part of the OpenLV project shouldcomplete a survey to register their interest atwww.openlv.net
