Hedgehogs spines
Hedgehogs are about 25cm long. They weigh about 1 kg .They have 6,000 spines but they are not
poisonous. They are not easy to remove.
Baby hedgehogs
Hedgehogs have up to seven babies in a litter. They have short soft spines when they are born. Soon after, their spines
became longer and stiffer. Like kitens 's baby hedegehogs do not open
their eyes until some time after they are born. After about thee weeks, they can safely follow their mother ,out of the
nest when she goes for food.
Nocturnal animalsHedgehogs live in hedges and gardens .The hedgehogs are
nocturnal .They prefer to sleep during the day and come out at
night .The hedgehog hibernate in winter. Their food are insects, small nice snails ,lizards and frogs and sometimes even snakes. When hedgehog goes after a snake ,its spines protect it from the
snake 's bite.
Sleeping
When hedgehogs go to sleep they curl up into a ball. This way, the hedgehogs protect the parts of the bodies where they don't have spines, the head, their legs and bellies . Foxes, badgers and the predators leave them and look for ones that are not covered with spines.
Moving
Al though hedgehogs normally stay on the ground ,they can swim quite, wey they can climb a three . If they fall from a three ,its spines are useful again. The hedgehog land on the
ground , it bounces because of the spines.
