Many liquor outlets in Bela-Bela arereported to be targeted for criminalactivities such as assault, according toan announcement by the Bela-Belapolice during a meeting with tavernowners and managers on Thursday, 30October at the station’s lecture hall.Police spokesperson Constable Glen

Manamela said that the meeting wasaimed at addressing the problem,charting a way forward and ensuringcommunity safety. She added that thesuspects use weapons such as knives,bricks and other sharp instrumentswhen committing the crimes and thepolice will continue monitoring theoutlets to help combat the crimes.During discussions, some owners

complained about the police breakingthe informer/police confidentiality bytelling the perpetrators who informedthem. This, they say, puts informers indanger.Warrant Officer Sello Mangana of the

Cluster Task Team said that informersshould stick to one officer and createstrong relationships with them. He saidthat an informer has a right to informthe station if an officer spilled the beansabout who informed him and he will bedealt with accordingly.Warrant Officer Mangana further

encouraged the owners to be their eyesand ears on the ground, as they are inthe areas where these crimes takeplace. He also raised concerns about

Bela-Bela police made a breakthrough inthe case of an attempted truck hijacking.Bela-Bela Police spokesperson,Constable Glen Manamela, said that thedriver and his crew were northbound onthe N1 Settlers Bridge when they wereattacked by eight men on Tuesday, 28October.Constable Manamela said that after

investigations a 23-year old suspect wasarrested in Bela-Bela on Thursday, 30October, while another two were nabbedin Tembisa later. She said that seven ofthe suspects were wearing policeuniform, and one of them was wearing apolice reflector jacket. They were drivinga black BMW and a white Vito.According to the police the suspects,

A well-known foreign businessmanwas released on R1000 bail when heappeared before the Bela-BelaMagistrate’s Court on Monday, 3November. The suspect wasarrested after being found inpossession of a suspected stolencellphone on Thursday, 30 October.Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla of

the Bela-Bela Police detectives saidthat a man in Johannesburg lost hisphone recently and managed totrace it through a tracker installed onthe phone. The complainant told thepolice that the tracker led him to theexact place where the phone wasand he confronted the buyer, callingthe police to intervene.The suspect owns a cellphone shop

situated on Chris Hani Drive in Bela-Bela and the cellphone, a SamsungGalaxy, is valued at R9 000.The suspect, Shafi Olla told The

She added that criminals oftendrop their stolen items when the policecome to search in order to avoid beingcharged with possession of suspectedstolen goods. The police will arrest theperson closest to the items.Both the police and the operators

reached an agreement of continueworking together to fight crime in thearea. Some taverns were deemed to bedangerous and stand to lose theirlicenses. The police said that they willbe keeping a close eye on businessesto monitor compliance and customersafety at all outlets.

Tsakani Violet Baloyi (44), whostands accused of the kidnapping ofbaby Dineo Mongatane when shewas only four months old in April ofthis year, appeared in the RegionalCourt on Friday, 31 October.Her seventeen-year-old mother,

Jacobeth Mongatane from Cyferskuilin Bela-Bela, met the 41- year oldaccused, Tsakani Violet Baloyi for thefirst time on the day before thekidnapping, in Bela-Bela.According to Mongatane, Baloyi

offered her a job as babysitter at herhouse in Phagameng, offering toallow Mongatane to take her babyalong to work.They agreed to meet on the

following day, 23 April, in Bela-Bela,and go from there to Baloyi’s housein Modimolle so that Mongatanecould start work immediately.Upon their arrival in Modimolle they

went to the Modi Mall, where Baloyitold Mongatane that she needed tomake a new key. She offered to takeDineo inside with her whileMongatane rested outside, but neverreturned.Mongatane waited at a restaurant

near the mall’s entrance until 20:00,when she contacted the police andopened a case of kidnapping. Baloyiwas seen on the mall’s CCTV leavingthe centre at around 16:10 in theafternoon with the baby on her back,walking quickly through the centreand leaving via Entrance 3.The police investigated the matter,

but Baloyi was nowhere to be found.Four months later, on 18 August,

Load shedding has hit the nation in thewake of the collapse of a coal silo inMpumalanga on Saturday, 1 November.Eskom said in a statement that they wouldbe applying load shedding from Sunday, 2November in several areas, includingsome towns in the Waterberg district.On Monday, 3 November, Eskom

released another statement saying thatthey would no longer be applying loadshedding in certain areas.According to Eskom’s load shedding

website extension 6 of the township andcertain parts of town would be withoutpower from 10:00 until12:30 on Saterday18 November .The problem at the Majuba power

station Is being addressed, but there isconcern that the water supply may havebeen exhausted.Eskom has asked the nation to save

power, especially between 18:00 and20:00, when the demand is at its peak.In the meantime, Bela-Bela residents

have been experiencing water problems.Kobus van der Merwe, the local DA-councillor, told the media that although thetown’s dam is full, the reservoirs cannotkeep up with the demand at this point andare emptying very quickly. This, he says,was what caused the water shortage.Van der Merwe stated that rumours that

the municipal Eskom account is in arearsare false, and that the power and watershortages are not due to this.* Bela-Bela’s license office at the

municipality is open to the public again,with limited services. This office recentlyhad to close its doors because its entirestaff had been suspended pending aninternal investigation.Van der Merwe said that the license

The police interviewed them, andthey confessed to the police that whenthe pile of sand collapsed on Lehobyewhile they were digging, they kept quietabout it.Molekwa accompanied the police to

This week, South Africa is a nationin mourning. In the space of threedays, we have lost three greatathletes — track and field starMbulaheni Mulaudzi, boxing queenPhindile Mwelase and BafanaBafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.The impact of the three on the

lives of ordinary South Africanscannot be overstated.Last week the nation gathered at

the Standard Bank Arena inGauteng to share the memories ofthe sports heroes who were takenfrom us while still far too young, andthough they have passed on theirmark remains on those who are leftbehind.It is different, somehow, when a

now-retired player passes on. Weare able to look back on what hegave us and take comfort in whathe had accomplished.When someone who is still active,

someone who is a prominent figurein the national sports scene, passesaway, it is a different matter.Senzo Meyiwa had not yet

accomplished all that he could inlife. His recent performance, in fact,was building on what came beforeand reaching ever higher. He hadso much more to give to us, and tohis family.But no more.Senzo Meyiwa did not die in an

accident. He did not die of anillness.Senzo Meyiwa was brutally

murdered by a criminal.Senzo Meyiwa was casually

gunned down by someone who wasquite possibly even a fan of his,because that’s how things go inSouth Africa. Murder is socommonplace that it is hardly evennewsworthy, unless the victim is acelebrity or a child.South Africa lost a great

sportsman in Meyiwa, and that issquarely on us. It is because wehave failed as a society to curbcrime, to stop criminals before theycan become murderous. We haveallowed a morality of convenienceto infect the young so that they thinkthat because it is easy, it must beright, and that the simplest option isalways the good one.The criminal who killed Meyiwa will

face the full fury of the law, becausehe was a celebrity. How many othervictims will go unavenged, becausenobody cares about them?Where is the national outcry for

the thousands of voiceless victimsof crime in South Africa?Why is there no justice for the

hundreds of men and women whoare killed and robbed and raped inour country daily?It’s no use trying to blame the

situation on the police. The situationhas grown beyond the police andwe have come to the point wherewe must decide whether we aremerely going to accept that we areon a slow slide to chaos.

This past Saturday, 1 November,was National Children’s Day inSouth Africa. It seems appropriate,somehow, to have a national day inhonour of children so close to thestart of the matric exams, when ayear’s crop of students will betaking the last steps out ofchildhood and into the adult world.At times like these, one has to

wonder how well we have preparedthese children to move in the adultworld. Do they have the skills andknowledge they need to function asproductive members of society?Is a passing matric, in fact, worth

anything today?According to many universities,

the answer is no. Severaluniversities in South Africa requirestudents to pass exams and takeremedial courses before they areadmitted, because they do not trusttheir grades. A child who passesMatric English may still befunctionally illiterate — they canread and write well enough to passthe exams, but no more. And mostuniversity courses requireadvanced reading skills from theirstudents. A professor teachingPhysics or Ancient History does nothave time to hold up the class whileexplaining to those who simply donot have the language skills tocope with the coursework.Is this the fault of the children?Of course not.It is the fault of the system that

allows children to be passed whounderstand only the bare minimumof the syllabus, which alreadyincludes only the bare minimumnecessary. It is the fault of asystem which prioritizes children’segos — not nearly as delicate aplant as some appear to believe —over effective learning.Many children are passed in lower

grades who should have been heldback, and then are passed againand again, compounding amistake. If a learner does notmaster the skills of Grade 1, thatlearner cannot be passed on toGrade 2 until they do. To hold themback a year may impact themseverely at the time, but childrenare resilient, and is it not muchbetter to solve the problems asearly as possible, instead of waitinguntil these problems have beencompounded with eleven moreyears’ worth of work that the child isnot equipped to assimilate?

In an effort to revitalize the taxiindustry by 2020, the TransportEducation Training Authority (TETA)recently announced that all roleplayers in the industry would bereceiving formal training when theyjoin the taxi industry.Oupa Tsholo, TETA spokesperson,
