Bitter political rivals in Mabatlane set asidetheir differences and joined hands in a protestmarch, to press home a list of demands. It was an unusual sight to see people from
different political parties holding hands andprotesting against what they believe affectedthe community across political boundaries. The Mabatlane Community Concerned
Committee (MCCC) organised a marchwhich accommodated all residentsregardless of their political affiliation.Locals marched through the township of
Leseding and proceeded to the ModimolleLocal Municipality’s satellite offices onFriday 20 November, to hand over theirmemorandum of demands.Messages like “#GladysMustFall”, “We
want Mabatlane Municipality”, “We wantwater” and “Away with pig farm”, weredisplayed on placards carried by theprotestors during the protest.According to the protestors,
#GladysMustFall was a clear messagesent to the municipality that Ward 1Councillor Gladys Mojela must berecalled. The protestors also demanded that a pig
farm in the area be relocated to anotherlocation where it will not put the health oflocal residents at risk. The marchers sang struggle songs in
front of the municipal premises, waitingfor the Modimolle Local Municipalityofficials and Mayor Kgaretja Lekalakala. The residents were eventually told by
the convenors that the Mayor and her
entourage will not be travelling to Mabatlaneas they were committed to other work relatedmatters.“The reason why we are here today is that
we applied for a march, but then unfortunatelywe were unable to hand over thememorandum to our mayor. We will beapplying for another march. Among otherthings we wanted to submit a petition thatrejects a pig farm which is located next to theR33 towards Lephalale”, MCCC ConvenerSimon Motsomane said.Motsomane said they are also encountering
a water crisis, which the municipality hasfailed to resolve.According to Motsomane, the MCCC is not
a political movement, but accommodates allindividuals even if they are affiliated tocertain political parties. He said people must not be confused by
political emblems, but rather focus on achievingtheir main goal which is proper service delivery.Andries “Marumo” Moima said their march
was postponed on more than one occasion, dueto the unavailability of the mayor.Moima told The Beat that they decided to
march on 20 November, after all the affectedparties agreed on that particular date.Modimolle Local Municipality spokesperson
Patrick Shika told The Beat on Monday, 23November, that the municipality was onlyaware of the previous march which had beenpostponed by the protestors.Shika said they were not invited to a section 4
meeting, where the recent march wasapproved. The municipal spokesperson said the mayor
would have been available if she was madeaware that there was a protest in Mabatlane.

A new revolutionary movement to the left ofJulius Malema’s EFF is steadily gaining groundin the Waterberg and Limpopo.Militant Modimolle firebrand Reuben Fumani
Chauke, who currently serves as the provincialcoordinator of the Black first Land First (BLF)revolutionary movement spoke to The Beatabout a range of issues, among others, expropriation of land.BLF is the brainchild of former EFF
heavyweight Andile Mngxitama, who fell outof favour with Julius Malema’s party.During the interview Chauke told The BEAT
that chief among the reasons why left the EFFwas that the party implemented changes thatwere contrary to its initial plans.“Our idea when we joined the EFF was land
expropriation. Then Julius Malema startedchanging the policies and abandoned theparty’s essential demand for land

expropriation,” said Chauke. This BLF coordinator said they already have
full support in the University of Venda(Univen) and University of Limpopo(Turfloop).
He further indicated that the youth are mostlyinterested in this movement because it focuseson issues that other parties have neglected.
“We have full support in the University ofVenda and Turfloop. We talk ideas thataccommodates the youth. We are teachingthem the Black Consciousness of Steve Bikoand Pan-Africanism of Robert Sobukwe, whichis not being spoken by political parties.Political parties talk about creating politicalelites. You go to a political party, you get richand drive an expensive car”, said Chauke.
Chauke said for his revolutionary movementBLF, land ownership is the most importantthing.
This Chauke says his movement believes thestrong ethical values of Steve Biko, RobertSobukwe and Thomas Sankara must beemulated by leaders who represents themasses.
Chauke continued to say: “We don’t believepeople should be in a leadership position justto enrich themselves.
He said that his movement would strive hardto ensure that the power comes back to thepeople.
In a document titled “Black First Land FirstRevolutionary Call”, published by AndileMngxitama on behalf of the Interim NationalCoordinating Committee of the Black First!Land First! Movement, the leader said blackpeople are last in their country and are also lastwhen it comes to employment.
“We pledge to build a revolutionarymovement that is Sankarist in belief andpractice, following and honouring therevolutionary legacy of Thomas Sankara. Webelieve that for the movement to succeed itneeds a servant leadership- an accountable, democratic, responsive leadership that putsblack people first”, Mngxitama was quoted inthe document.
