The results of the South African censusthat was done in 2011 were released onWednesday, 30 October, and there arequite a few interesting bits of informa-tion.According to the report, there are 51,8

million people living in South Africa. 7million more people were counted thanin the last census that was done in2001.The document shows that 26,6 million

of the South African population arewomen and 25,2 million are men.An interesting fact is that Gauteng, the

smallest of the country’s nine provinces, has the largest population and the North-ern Cape, the largest of the nine prov-inces, has the smallest population.A census is a procedure where all the

people living in a country are system-atically counted. The census question-naires are developed to gather informa-tion about the state of the nation so thatthe government can use that informa-tion to plan.President Jacob Zuma received the

complete census report during an offi-cial ceremony in Cape Town. He saidthat the census report tells the story ofSouth Africa. Zuma explained that theinformation contained in the report wouldbe used to make sure that resourcesare fairly distributed between provincesand population groups. The census report gives us some in-

sight into the make-up of the people ofSouth Africa. However, a census is onlyuseful if the data is actually used to makedecisions and to allocate all resourcesavailable to the government fairly.Unfortunately, the government did not

show a lot of commitment to equalityso far. On 7 September, Dr MamphelaRamphele, a founder of the Black Con-sciousness Movement, said in an arti-cle that inequality is the biggest prob-lem that South Africans have to face. The rich are getting richer, while the poorare dying. The ANC Treasurer General,

Matthews Phosa, also spoke of in-equality and how black economic em-powerment is not working to bridge thegap. “What it did do is create an up-per class of wealthy black investorswho initially funded their wealth withdebt through the acquisition ofshareholding in successful white orinternational businesses,” he said inhis statement.Once again, on the eve of the ANC

Conference in Mangaung, the citizensof this country have to ask their lead-ers: when will the black empowermentbe available to all and not only to aselected elite group? When will corruption, nepotism and

cadre deployment make room for edu-cation, equal opportunities and jobcreation?

51,8 million souls inSouth Africa Understanding the

Holy Spirit Bishop Silas Tlou

The Holy Spirit is the third person inthe Holy Trinity. He is fully God. Heis eternal, all-knowing, ever-present,has a will, and can speak. He isalive. He is a person.Ephesians 4:30 – “And do not

grieve the Holy Spirit of God, withwhom you were sealed for the dayof redemption.” The Holy Spirit hasfeelings and can be hurt. The HolySpirit can also get angry. Hebrews3:7-11 – “So, as the Holy Spirit says:‘Today, if you hear his voice, do notharden your hearts as you did in therebellion, during the time of testingin the desert, where your fatherstested and tried me and for fortyyears saw what I did. That is why Iwas angry with that generation, andI said, ‘Their hearts are always go-ing astray, and they have not knownmy ways.’ So I declared on oath inmy anger, ‘They shall never enter myrest.’ ”The Holy Spirit can bring people

rest, peace and care in times ofhardship or trouble. Isaiah 63:14 –“…like cattle that go down to theplain, they were given rest by theSpirit of the Lord. This is how youguided your people to make for your-self a glorious name.”The fact that the Holy Spirit is a

person is clear from the story ofAnanias and Sapphira, written downin the book of Acts. The Holy Spiritcan be lied to. Act 5:3 – “Then Pe-ter said, “Ananias, how is it thatSatan has so filled your heart thatyou have lied to the Holy Spirit andhave kept for yourself some of themoney you received for the land?”The Holy Spir i t can also be

tempted. Acts 5:9 – “Peter said toher, “How could you agree to test theSpirit of the Lord? Look! The feet ofthe men who buried your husbandare at the door, and they will carryyou out also.”God anointed Jesus with the Holy

Spirit. The Spirit gave him power overevil and the power to heal the sick.Act 10:38 – “…how God anointed Je-sus of Nazareth with the Holy Spiritand power, and how he went arounddoing good and healing all who wereunder the power of the devil, be-cause God was with him.” Matthew12:28 – “But if I drive out demonsby the Spirit of God, then the king-dom of God has come upon you.”The Holy Spirit also led Jesus to a

place where he could pray, fast, andgrow in the Spirit. Luke 4:1 – “Je-sus, full of the Holy Spirit, returnedfrom the Jordan and was led by theSpirit in the desert.” After Jesus wastempted by the devil and withstoodhim, the Spirit brought him back outof the wilderness. Luke 4:14 – “Je-sus returned to Galilee in the powerof the Spirit, and news about himspread through the whole country-side.” The truth is that the Holy Spiritis a person the same as the Fatherand the Son are within the Holy Trin-ity.
