Although the first day of spring is still a weeksaway, perfect weather conditions broughtout more than 5,000 people to Aera Park forBakersfield Southwest Baseball’s annualopening day ceremony recently.
More than 1,200 youngsters representing morethan 138 teams ranging in age from 3-18 took part inthe morning ceremony, as fans packed the standsand grassy areas at the park.
The event marked the 24th opening day for theorganization, whose numbers are growing more than30 percent a year.
“Opening day all started off just to have fun, butthe event has grown into a fundraiser for us as well,”said fourth-year BSWB president Darren Billesbach.
“When you see all the kids come out onto the fieldwith smiles, that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”
After the teams were introduced, Kern CountySupervisor Mike Maggard addressed the crowd.
“I remember opening day when I was a kid,” saidMaggard. “It was a time when everyone was still incontention, somebody was going to hit the first homerun, butterflies in your stomach, and all the beststuff about baseball.
Also in attendance was Bakersfield native DavidCarr of the 2011 Super Bowl champion New YorkGiants, who played BSWB and now has two sons inthe league.
“I’ve been involved in this for close to 30 years
and it’s an awesome deal,” said Carr. “I’ve been allover the country and have seen lots of Little Leaguefields, and we should feel blessed to have a facilitylike this in our city.”
However, there is always room to improve thefields, which are at maximum capacity, and one ofthe main goals for this season is to find a sponsor topurchase lights that would accommodate night prac-tices and games so the more than 600 youths on thewaiting list would get a chance to play.
“We are a non-profit, and without our sponsors wewould be another second- tiered park,” said VP offundraising Brent Clayton. “The support we getmakes BSWB ‘Best in Class’ in California ballparks.”

People who are appreciative justseem to be a pleasure to bearound. That’s why it’s always ahighlight when students writeodes. They find a unique way of
looking at their world and also appreciatea variety of things, people, and activitiesin their everyday lives. I’ve also thrown ina parody because Zachary Urrabazo, oneof my eighth-grade students, is so clever, and I did, after all, go to college withWeird Al Yankovic, king of parodies!
Ode to running by Anthony MoronezI can’t live without it if I tried,If you ever left me I think I would cry.We have been through a lot,Some extremely good some not.You aren’t just a sport or game, You are more to me than money or
fame.I’ve been happy of our relationship,You have been good to me every bit.I’m trying to say you’re my life,When I grow up I might love you more
than my wife.Because you are here for me 24/7,And when I die I will take you with me
to heaven.
Ode to my shoes by Gabriel TorresMy shoes are so comfortable They make me look irresistibleWhen I’m walking down the street People can’t keep their eyes off my feetMy shoes make me look so goodI run so fast in my shoes people think
I’m running from the hood. With my shoes I can run all the way to
HaitiWith my shoes I attract all the pretty
ladies. When I wear my shoes I look so flyWhen I wear my shoes I’m that sexy
guyI just thank my shoes for making me
look so attractiveWithout my shoes I would be nothing,
not even active.
Ode to my best friend by Jennifer LuleMy best friend, Kailey, is always by my
side,We are always together, like Bonny and
Clyde. She and I are so different, yet we are so
alike,We love each other very much, like my
brother loves his bike.I know we’ll
always stick togeth-er through thickand thin,
Because when Iam with Kailey, Iget a big old grin.
Now we have hadour good times, butalso our bad,
But I am alwayswith her, whethershe’s happy or sad.
I have now lefther side and I missher dearly,
For we are veryclose, as you cansee clearly.
I know I’ll see hersoon because ofcourse, she is mybest friend,
And love can stretch over any bound-ary, so we will be friends til the end.
Ode to my bike by Javier SandovalMy bike is not the best,But it can still beat the rest.It has a few problems here and there,But I can take me anywhere. I’ve been to Walgreens with it and done
jumps, Although I could feel all the bumps. It was a present to me, Even though I was a little tiny.I ride with all my friends, Even though they ask me for some
money to lend. Some of us whine,When we have to go inside for dinner
time.
Ode to my Dad by Sonam SidhuMy dad is all smiles,
Though he’s tired all the while. He’ll make me delicious food,Even if he’s in a bad mood.We watched the Super Bowl together, And with each point, I felt like a feath-
er.Even though we lost (how lame?),He still said, “Good game.”My dad looks old when he doesn’t shave
his beard, Plus just a little weird. At times, he’s a tad bit crazy,But never, ever lazy.
Ode to Anime by Nicole MatthiasAnime is a different world to me,It’s the only safe place I can be.Even though everyone wants me to turn
it down a notch,It’s the only thing I want to watch. It’s the perfect fantasy world, Where one’s hair is always perfectly
curled.
The guys there usually look nice,Even though some are as sneaky as
mice.To others I’ve tried to mention, I’ve even been to same conventions.I love anime with all my heart,Even though some characters aren’t so
smart.
Ode to District Festival by AlejandraRincon
District Festival, you have been so niceto me,
Through you I made a new friend whosename starts with an “E.”
I admit, you’re after school practiceswere a little boring,
Always towards the end I would awakenfrom my snoring.
Butterflies in my stomach would start toarise,
When practice began, and you lookedinto my eyes
Good; without problem is how I wouldplay.
But you were still in my mind by theend of the day,
The night of the concert was the bestday yet.
Your music, so beautiful I’ll never for-get.
But it has ended. No more concerts, nomore practices.
Oh how I miss those afternoons at Actis.
