BY CHRISTINE GRONTKOWSKI Community contributor akersfield resident Lisa Karpe doesn’t have multi- ple sclerosis (MS), but she is making a difference in the lives of people with MS in Kern County, around Southern California, and across the nation. Karpe, whose mother was diag- nosed with MS and lived in a con- valescent home for 17 years before passing, said, “My mom was sick from day one. It’s a hard disease and it’s an expensive disease.” As a result, she decided to give back, and is now going to be honored for her volunteer work by the Southern California & Nevada Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Karpe will be presented with the “Volunteer of the Year” award dur- ing a board meeting February 24, 2011 in Los Angeles. Since 2004, she has been instru- mental in both fundraising and providing support to people with MS. Karpe has been participating in Walk MS/donates to the Golden Circle, the major donor gift cam- paign for the Chapter; has been involved in the Bakersfield Against Multiple Sclerosis (BAMS) group that aims to raise awareness, along with funds for programs, services and cutting-edge research; has per- sonally stewarded foundation sub- missions in Bakersfield on behalf of the Southern California & Nevada Chapter; and, has dedicated many hours to the Chapter’s Caring Con- nection program. Through the Caring Connection program, Karpe visits several peo- ple with MS who are either living in a skilled nursing facility or are homebound and unable to go out into the community. Not only does she provide emotional support and companionship, she also becomes an advocate to those people she visits. The Southern California & Neva- da Chapter, which serves nearly 19,000 people living with MS, hon- ors one person each year with the “Volunteer of the Year” award for his or her outstanding volunteer service and contribution to moving us closer toward a world free of MS. For more information about the award, volunteer opportunities, or any of the programs or services of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, call the Kern County office at 321-9512 or visit: www.nationalmssociety.org. his is not another “New Year’s Res- olution” article — I quit writing about them several years ago when I realized I never kept ‘em anyway. I want to talk about the true driving force behind all resolutions — motivation. While we can have great intentions to keep our resolutions, the true driving force will be motivation. Without that, your best intentions won’t stand a chance to see the new year. Our biggest roadblocks are ourselves; we continue to make excuses and come up with reasons why we cannot fit fitness into our lives. I don’t mean to make light of anyone’s personal issues or medical conditions, but when we use them as a roadblock for not doing ANYTHING, that’s where I fig- ure this person isn’t really interested in becoming fit and healthy anyway. I am continually amazed at the idea that the minor roadblocks life throws us pres- ent colossal obstacles — and I include myself in that category, by the way. I’ll give you some examples I have heard in the past: Excuse: I had a baby/have children/busy with kids. Answer: So? And? What are 5 a.m.’s for anyway? Slip that fit- ness hour in between 5-6 a.m. Excuse: My beer belly gets in the way — but I love beer. Answer: Give up your beer! I assume there’s no way I can help him unless he stops drinking it. Excuse: I am a dia- betic and also have arthritis. Answer: Did you know that exercise helps manage blood sugar and keep your weight in check? And, moderate physical activity helps decrease fatigue and strengthens muscles, bones and surely helps joint flexibility too. Excuse: I have a bum knee, bad ankle, my doctor told me to rest it (and that pre- scription was 5 years ago.) Answer: You have one good knee and ankle left so drag it in to the gym with the rest of your body! The point I am trying to make is that I can find a hundred ways of telling you that you “can do it.”How many times do I need to say it? Because your “one way of cannot” will trump my “can do.” I don’t want to validate your excuses for not succeeding. Motivation comes from your desire to want to change. It comes from inside you. Yes, I can find ways of pulling it out of you and proving you can succeed but — only if you want to. You know you can do this or do some- thing. I had a past client who came to me sev- eral years ago, nonathletic, never played any sports or engaged in fitness classes. Her motivation level was zero — only because she thought she couldn’t do any- thing because she never had before. Within a few months she changed from “I can’t” to “I can” — she always consid- ered herself as someone “who couldn’t exercise.” Yes, she went from overweight, nonathletic to someone who was physi- cally capable of performing the exercises at hand. I didn’t change her — she changed her outlook and the motivation to succeed kicked in. I have misjudged several of my clients but, if you’ve done what I do long enough, the pattern of excuses just keep repeating themselves. I start to assume that they will never follow through on the advice I give them to get over their excuse hurdles. Motivation starts with your belief that you can or cannot succeed. Look at exer- cising as a list of choices you have. You don’t have to work towards becoming a size 0 runway model — or a professional wrestler because, let’s be real, most of our choices fall between those two extremes. If you need to lose 5 to 10 pounds of body fat next year and you have no physi- cal, medical, or psychiatric reason why you can’t reach this goal — and your not being held hostage and forced fed pep- peroni pizza — your thyroid gland is in good working order and you’re not one of those people who gets into her car to drive to the gym and end up in Tahiti, then I think there’s a chance motivation will have a chance with you. It’s okay to hit a brick wall now and then, cheat a bit on your eating, skip a day or two of exercise, just don’t let that old way of thinking cloud your motivation to get back on track. You can do it, I know you can! Oops, I said it again. Guess I am part cheerleader too. Comes with the territory. Have a healthy Happy New Year! Questions or comments?
