Iam a girl who has cancer. Youknow, sometimes bad things hap-pen — like finding out about hav-ing cancer. But good things comeout of it. Wouldn’t you rather find

out about cancer and get cured? So, ina way, I am happy I found out soonerrather than later.

Thanks to a special doctor at Bak-ersfield Dermatology, I found out.

Many people have cancer, andthey’re the same as you and me. Theycan do many things like anyone elsecan do. I am grateful that I didn’thave to have radiation because at firstthe doctor thought I would have to.

My mom, Hilde, thought it would bea great idea to donate some of herlong hair to another child who wouldhave to have radiation. On April 6, she

had more than 13 inches cut off — shedonated it to Locks of Love. Accordingto the website “Locks of Love is apublic nonprofit organization that pro-vides hairpieces to financially disad-vantaged children in the United Statesand Canada under age 21 sufferingfrom long-term medical hair loss fromany diagnosis.”

Because of what my mom has done,my sister and I will cut our hair, too— but we are going to wait until theone year anniversary of my cancerdiagnosis on Aug. 3.

I know I would have been happy towear a wig donated by my mom orsister if I had radiation.

I found with my blog friends. So, hereit is, a little peak into another worldfrom the past that’s no longer just inyour dreams:Living in the smallish, central Califor-nia town of Bakersfield, “vintage,”“Hollywood glam,” “mod” or “urban”are labels that usually don’t enter yourmind. But maybe you haven’t wan-dered into this hidden gem and spokento the ladies at Your Wildest Dreams, who answered some questions I hadfor them. Why would you choose a vintage piece

over a new one?

Alissa: “There’s more history to avintage piece than a new one; they’re-timeless, the material is higher quality, every piece is super unique, and it’s asif you’re wearing a story.”How do you make a vintage outfit work

in today’s world and still look up-to-

date?

Alex: “Wear whatever you’ve chosenwith confidence.”

Alissa: “That’s true! Alex picks outthe ugliest 1980s piece from the racksand she comes in the next day lookingso adorable, because she’s confidentabout her choice. Know your ownstyle, and wear it with a sense of pridebecause vintage pieces are finds. Youhave to really look around to find goodpieces.”

What should you look for when buy-ing vintage clothing?

Alissa: “Look for labels, in-tact

seams, and most importantly, waiststhat fit you. Most vintage pieces runsmall since up until the 1960s, womenwere wearing corsets.”

Why didn’t I think of that, I thought.Every time I try on vintage clothes,I’m always slightly horrified at howtiny the waists are. Of course! I com-pletely forgot the ladies of the past hada little extra assistance in the waistdepartment.Who’s your fashion muse?

Alissa: “Dita Von Teese.” Alex: (with a laugh) “The 1980s

band, Dynasty.”Favorite fashion era?

Alissa: “The 1930s to 1964 — I likethe corseted waist-look.”

Alex: “The 1980s!”Hardest to find vintage find:

Alissa: “Probably pants, jeans, casualwear or lingerie.”

I commented that I always feel like Ineed someplace to go when I wear vin-tage because the pieces are so dressy.Alissa suggested the best way to docasual-vintage is to pair a 1950s styleblouse with a modern pair of jeans orcigarette pants. It’s also a great way tokeep old things feeling fresh. What made you fall in love with vintage?

Alissa: “Probably when I startedsewing (she makes corsets!). It’s easierto see how an older item was madebecause the construction was so muchbetter, and the seaming is flawless.Plus, building a wardrobe with vintagepieces is sort of a process of self-cre-ation, you create an image fromscratch from the pieces you findinstead of copying a model from an ad.

And, it’s sexy!“Men respond more to elegance

rather than the current trends. Ifyou’re doing a pin-up girl vibe, eventhough you’re covered up, it’s weird. But men find it way more attractivethan the super short things.”

I almost fell down and kissed herfeet when she said that. That’s thewhole reason I started my blog, Ialmost screamed in excitement! To

show that classic femininity still hassome serious power in today’s world. Isettled on a vigorous nod of agreementand a huge smile as I wrote down herquote instead ... no need to scare off anew kindred spirit just when you’vemade the acquaintance.Where are the best places to shop for

vintage clothing?

Alex: “Bakersfield is actually one ofmy favorites! You wouldn’t think it’strue, but small cities are better for vin-tage finds.

Alissa: “She’s right. In big cities likeLos Angeles, vintage items are con-stantly being traded, worn and resold. In smaller cities it’s easier to findpieces that have sometimes been caredfor by the original owners. And if youlook in non-touristy towns, you’ll alsofind the cheapest prices.”

As she said this, Alissa showed methe beaded, vintage black cardigan shewas wearing. She said it had the sameowner for 40 years when she found it— and she was right, it was nearlyflawless and super cute.

Who would of thought? Bakersfield,or maybe I should say, In Your WildestDreams, is something of a vintageMecca.
