District Governor By District Governor Jim Dunlop

A Big Thank You to all my cabinet members, fellow Lions, Lioness and Leo’s for all your dedication and hard work along with your purple passion in helping 5M1 and me in “Strengthening the Pride” in Lionism over this past year.

I have had a great time from July of 2014 to June of 2015 as your District Governor, and a big Thank You to all of the 5M1 Lion clubs, officers and members for the great hospitality they have given to me when I was at their clubs first visits, zone, region and Mid-Winter convention meetings.

As my term comes to an end on June 30th, 2015, I have many things to be thankful for in my term as your District Governor. One of my goals was to increase membership. I know we are down but we still have time till the end of June to get it back up, and with your help we can do it. At my 1st visit to 48 clubs out of 50 in the district I have inducted 88 new members and thanks to those clubs that work hard to get the new members for me to induct. My other goal was to get more Leo clubs going and with help from CC/PDG Earl we chartered a new Leo club in Kasson/Mantorville. At my clubs 1st visits my talks about trying to get new Leos, and by raising funds for them, a lot of clubs are talking about and looking at starting new Leo clubs this next year.

I also feel good and thank all of you that helped me by raising the funds we needed to match $1,750.00 from International for our Public Relations grant that will help the district update our web site and help improve other Public Relations things we need in 5M1. I hope that my purple banner with the meaning of our small Lions Pin on it that we all should be wearing will remind you of me and what Lions do for those in need. Plus, I hope it will help all the Lions clubs and their members in 5M1 keep up their Purple Passion to Strengthen the Pride of Lionism in their communities, the District, and the world.

Join the Challenge and Make a Difference

Your club can earn special Centennial recognition and make a difference in your community by participating in our Global Service Action Campaigns throughout the year. You decide when to serve and which projects are right for your club!

Engaging Our Youth – Host service projects that help youth in your community, or inspire the next generation of volunteers by inviting Leos or local youth to serve on a project with you.

Sharing the Vision – Give the gift of sight by planning projects that help children or neighbors who are blind or living with low vision.

Relieving the Hunger – Build stronger families and communities by organizing a food drive or service projects to help feed the hungry.

Protecting Our Environment – Plan projects that protect and improve the environment to make your community a better place for everyone.

Start Planning Your Centennial Service Project Today! Visit the Centennial website at lions100.org to learn how you can join the celebration. Then share the Centennial Service Challenge with your club and start planning your service projects today! Did You Know? Donations to LCIF for sight, youth or measles also count toward your Centennial Banner Patch. A single act of service can change a life. But when 1.35 million members come together to serve, we can change the world.

Does your Lions club host a Leo’s club now, or are you looking to host a Leo’s club? We are looking for, and willing to help, the clubs in 5M1 that would like to start a Leo’s club. Please contact Leo’s Chairs Summer Thorson [email protected] or Randi Fravert [email protected] This is one of my Goals for this year, plus Leo clubs can help your clubs membership in many ways - try it you will like it.

Thank You All District Governor 5M1 Lion Jim Dunlop

District Governor Elect By District Governor Elect Stan Nerhaugen

Dear Fellow Lions,

International President Joe Preston has congratulated Lions for reaching 1.4 million members. Adding new members helps us serve people in need throughout the world. It was Lions who responded to the need in Nepal within 24 hours. It was Lions who helped popularize Little League for youth to enjoy. It was Lions who provided $21,000,000 to Japan to help them recover from a tsunami.

Even Pope Francis has blessed a Lions’ Guide Dog. IP Preston’s theme has been “Strengthen the Pride,” to which DG Jim has added “Purple Pride.” What color is his Pontiac?

As we close this Lion year, we should remember IP Preston’s statement that Lions are about “Service, Service, Service.” Think about what your club has done to serve your community, to serve people in need, and to show Pride in being a Lion.

I wish to thank all the people who have served 5M1 this Lions’ year. You may not be aware of all the Cabinet Lions who put in long hours, and drove all over SE Minnesota to share stories about the many programs Lions support. Without the efforts of the 5M1 officers (Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor) we could not function. And thanks to the GLT members who plan, organize and deliver our excellent leadership sessions, and the GMT members who help us grow and recruit new members. A special thank you goes out to CC Earl, GMT Chair Jane and DG Jim for the extra efforts they made to keep the Lyle Club active.

I also wish to thank the zone chairs for all the meetings they organized, the leadership they exhibited and the pride they have in the clubs in their zone. I am especially thankful for the extra work that 2VDG Bruce put in last fall while I was recovering, and most of all to my wife, Ruth, who drove many miles, kept an eye on me to make sure I followed doctor’s orders and will help get me on Facebook.

Don’t forget to thank the people in your club who help Lions make a difference in people’s lives.

On to Hawaii!

Sincerely,

Stan Nerhaugen II

Can Do Canines

Thanks to the support of Lions Clubs across 5M, Can Do Canines continues to train dogs for people with disabilities, and provide them to those in need, free of charge.

Attention Lions! Save the date for the Can Do Woofaroo. Our annual fundraising walk (with dogs!) will take place on Saturday, September 12 at our facility in New Hope, Minn. Keep an eye out for details on how to get involved in next month’s issue!

In the meantime, here is a powerful story about a recent graduate, Sandy McKie, who was recently partnered with a Can Do Canines Hearing Assist Dog named Alea. And, thank you for your continued support of our organization!

A Little Bit of Comfort

Sandy McKie & Hearing Assist Dog Alea One of Sandy McKie’s favorite quotes is from Neale Donald Walsh, who states … “life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Little did Sandy know that being diagnosed with degenerative adult onset hearing loss in both ears would make her live out of her comfort zone 24/7.

As summer approaches I have failed in one of the most important rules I have for myself.

‘When working on a project, take care of the things other people need to complete their part first.’

It just doesn’t help get things done if you do your part but don’t help others by giving them the stuff they need to complete their part of the project. So my apologies to our District Newsletter Editor for being late with the June article for the Newsletter. It’s hard to do your job as Editor if you are waiting on others to provide the articles.

It is also time consuming for other people on a project if they have to keep asking for you to complete your part of a job so they can do their part of the job. That is, the time spent asking you to provide the necessary information, could have been spent on actually completing their part of the project if you had provided the information in a timely manner. It’s kind of like trying to build a house when the guy that was supposed to put in the basement keeps putting you off.

We had a good School of Instruction on May 16th at the Lewiston Altura High school. Lion Stacy Salo stepped up a few days before the event to do the Secretary Training. Lion Stacy did an excellent job and the few people attending her session, including me, appreciated her help.

Next session is May 30th at the Heinz Center in Rochester, followed by Zone Chair Training. I have been getting ready for that and plan to address a few things in the Zone Chair Training with Microsoft Office that people have asked about over the past few years. It has been fun putting that together.

I never really got out of teaching when I went into school administration because I was always working with other people in the organization but this has a little more immediate feedback than finding out if someone knows how to deal with an irate parent or establishing an effective lesson in the classroom. We’ll know if someone can organize the files and folders on their computer, set tabs, move a picture around a document; and merge a set of data with a letter, mailing label or name badge right away.

Memorial Day weekend will have come and gone by the time this appears in the Newsletter and I always reflect on how much more many people gave of themselves than we give as Lions to our communities, state, nation and the world. I always feel that what we do as Lions can help to alleviate the need for comrades in arms, and their families, to have to give so much.

I want to thank our District Governor, Lion Jim Dunlop, for a great year and look forward to another great year in Lionism with District Governor Elect, Lion Stan Nerhaugen II next year.

Till next time.

Bruce Montplaisir

LCIF By PDG Jack Krage

My Six Year Term as LCIF Coordinator Draws to a Close This June, my term as District 5M1 LCIF Coordinator will be completed. What a fantastic six years it has been. Lions Clubs International Foundation has so many wonderful humanitarian programs and accomplishments. My assignment was merely to expound on those programs to the Lions of District 5M1. For my entire term, I was merely the bearer of great news. I found that by detailing an assortment of our humanitarian feats worldwide that Lions and Lions Clubs had a better understanding of where their dollars were spent. They earned an ownership of our worldwide programs. As a result, the donations to LCIF have been exceptional.

Last year, District 5M1 was one of only four districts worldwide that had 100% participation in donating to LCIF. What this means is that every club in the district either gave to LCIF or at least one Lion in every club donated to LCIF. This feat is extremely humbling. We should all feel proud of this distinction.

Another fantastic milestone reached by our district is that we have awarded 526 Melvin Jones Fellowships since the fellowship was initiated. My hat is off to all those deserving Lions that were cited for their lifelong service. In addition, we have 11 Lions that have earned the designation of Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. These hardworking Lions have received more than one Melvin Jones designation. Congratulations to you, as well.

The clubs in District 5M1 have donated to LCIF a grand total of $579,621.77. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Forty-seven District 5M1 Lions Clubs have at least one Melvin Jones Fellow in their membership. Seventeen Clubs in our district have enough earned credit to award an additional Melvin Jones Fellowship. Two clubs have enough credits earned to designate 2 MJF’s and one club has earned credit for three MJF’s. District 5M1, itself, has over $1,000.00 earned credit; so the district can award a MJF. Potentially, our district should have twenty-two more Melvin Jones Fellowships awarded. I urge all clubs to use these earned credits

and award a deserving Lion for their accomplishments.

In closing, I thank you for affording me this wonderful opportunity. For six years I was merely the bearer of great news. My fellow Lions, let us continue to write this fantastic story. There are so many people in need of our service. Let us all continue to “Serve” with pride.

Can Do Canines-Continued In the beginning, her life didn’t change drastically. The hearing aids, amplified phone, and audio assistance devices she bought helped. She told family and friends, but not co-workers, about her condition and life went on.

However, through the years, each check-up revealed increased hearing loss, and everyday life became more difficult. Sandy, who works at a junior high school in Scandia, Minn., found herself relying on co-workers more and more to alert her to the bells, alarms, and announcements she could no longer hear.

“And at home, I wasn’t doing much better.” Sandy says. “I burned meals, had an oven fire—due to not hearing the timer—and was late for work because I couldn’t hear the alarm.”

After expressing her frustrations, her audiologist suggested applying for a Hearing Assist Dog with Can Do Canines. Almost a year later, Sandy met Alea, a terrier-mix, adopted from the Animal Humane Society and trained by Can Do Canines. Sandy says that Alea has transformed her life in so many ways by alerting her to sounds both at work and at home.

“At home, Alea is able to alert me to alarms, timers and, because I live in a rural area, deer, crows and other critters,” Sandy says “At work, she alerts me to bells, announcements and drills. I am confident that if any emergency situation should arise she will alert me to that as well.”

When she’s not working, Alea is like any other dog who loves to run outside, play and fetch. Sandy has begun having Alea pick up items such as keys when she drops them, because she can’t hear the sound. As a result, Alea has begun to pick up everything for a reward. Sandy is hoping that housekeeping will be next!

Sandy says she is eternally grateful to Can Do Canines for this gift of an assistance dog. She no longer feels sad or anxious about her hearing loss.

“Yes, my life will continue to change as everyone’s does,” Sandy says. “But with Alea’s help, she will push me past my comfort zone with confidence.”
