Serving Heart to Heart By District Governor Gloria Dockter

Vern and I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and rested up for the fun, busy month ahead. Much of my time will be spent on paying attention to details for the mid-winter convention. The committee is hard at work, and things are falling into place very nicely. They have already put in a request for great weather for that weekend.

The 2013 5M1 Mid-Winter Convention is January 11-13, 2013. Do you have your hospitality book and rooms reserved? Have you been promoting the first-timers contest this month? The contest is open to any 5M1 Lion who is attending his/her first mid-winter convention. They can have some fun with the contest and get to know some 5M1 Lions at the same time. Besides, the prizes are worth winning.

A silent auction will be held for the Minnesota Lions Diabetes Foundation, Inc. Each club is asked to donate an item or basket for the auction. You can bring the item to mid-winter or give it to one of the diabetes chairs or assistants — Bruce Klein, Vern Dockter, Charles Mills, or Jill O’Donnell.

The memorial service will again be held on Friday evening. It is a time to honor those who have served their communities and served those who are less fortunate and have now completed their service on Earth. Invite family members to the service and be sure to provide transportation if they would like to attend. They do not have to be registered for the convention if they are just attending the memorial service.

There will be a Kickoff Breakfast on Saturday morning this year that is open to all Lions and their guests. We will hear from International Director Donal W. Knipp and honor the Lions who have received a Melvin Jones Fellowship, Hearing Research Fellowship, Helen Keller Award, or the Dream Catcher Award during the past year. The breakfast is free for those Lions who are being honored.

If your club would like International Director Donal W. Knipp to present a NEW Melvin Jones Fellowship, Hearing Research Fellowship, Helen Keller Award, or the Dream Catcher Award at Saturday’s Banquet, please email the information to me. Bring the award to the Mid-Winter Convention

and give it to me before the afternoon seminars. Past district governors are invited to wear their white coats for the Lions Banquet on Saturday evening.

The spouses’ event on Saturday morning includes a reception for the international director’s wife, Lion Betty Knipp. Artist Cynthia Weitzel, a member of the deaf community, infuses her artwork with deaf experiences, perspectives, and symbols of deaf history.

I encourage everyone to consider attending the mid-winter convention. It’s a great opportunity for fellowship and an excellent chance to learn more about Lionism. Come and join us. Lighten up, have fun and meet some of the greatest people in the world – the Lions and their families in District 5M1!

The Peace Poster and Essay Awards Ceremony is quickly approaching. The date for the event is December 16, 2012, with the deadline for registering December 10, 2012. This is the first year that 5M1 is having the essay contest for the visually impaired. Our guest speakers will be Past International Director Debra Wasserman, from Faribault, MN, and Simon Huelsbeck, art instructor at Rochester Community and Technical College, from Rochester, MN.

I hope that your club will bring your Peace Poster Contest winner(s) and participants and Essay Contest winner(s) and participants, their parents, families, teachers, and peace poster chairs to the Sunday afternoon event. Once again there will be pizza, garden salad, breadsticks, and beverages. New this year will be cookie decorating, giving the participants a chance to be creative. Come and help us celebrate 25 years of the Peace Poster contest.

Until next month…

First Vice District Governor By 1st Vice District Governor Earl Orvik

It is with sorrow that I write this month’s article. Lion Marti Friest passed away on November 16th. She and her friend, Lion Ken Wentz, joined the Adams Lions Club a little over a year ago. Marti was a writer for the local newspaper. She joined shortly after covering and helping with Jungle Days last summer. Ken said she was proud to be Lion. With that in mind, I will continue with some things about the Global Membership Team (GMT) and Global Leadership Team (GLT).

The GMT is encouraging clubs to have a membership drive this year. Maybe a membership night or asking someone to help with a project. That is what brought Lion Marti to our club. She said, “Lions do stuff.” Marti wasn’t a Lion long enough to recruit another member, but keep in mind that we should all recruit a replacement, and one more, for growth. The GMT would be willing to meet with your club to help with your membership drive. Just give the GMT chair, PDG Roy Larson, a call.

The GLT is stressing orientation and the Club Excellence Process (CEP). I regret that my club doesn’t have an orientation event for new and old members. I am sure Marti would have enjoyed being a Lion a lot more if she had been introduced to all the things that Lions do, and can do. A good orientation program will include the things that the local club does and the connection to District 5M1, MD5M, and to Lions Clubs International. I also believe that Marti would have had some great insight for our club.

Through the CEP, members have a chance, without intimidation, to assess their own club. The community is also asked to give information from outside the club as to things we Lions could be doing differently to help our communities even more.

The CEP, orientation, and mentoring are all ways to help improve our clubs’ retention of members. The

GLT is available to help. Just contact the GLT chair, Lion Larry Stryker.

Let’s keep those registration forms coming in for the mid-winter convention on January 11-13th at the International Event Center by the airport in Rochester. Another great event is being planned.

The memorial service and Friday evening entertainment will get the convention off to a great start. The Saturday luncheon speaker, Al Batt, will entertain and delight us.

There is an agenda item for the Saturday business meeting to select a sponsor for Jungle Days. We need some clubs to be prepared to enter a bid for this golf outing and to let the district leadership know that you are planning to bid.

The afternoon seminars will also be great information for all Lions members. Lion Marti would have enjoyed hearing all the things that Lions do to help our fellow neighbors. Check out the district website for further information. Remember, our mid-winter convention is the best valued mid-winter convention in the multiple district. Remember to bring a friend or a first timer to the convention. I HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE.

EyeCare America Offers Free Eye Exam Eligibility

By the age of 65, one in three Americans has some form of vision-limiting eye disease. To help address this growing need, EyeCare America provides eye care to U.S. citizens and legal residents through volunteer ophthalmologists (Eye M.D.s) at no out-of-pocket cost to those who qualify. After answering a few questions online, you can find out instantly if someone is eligible to be matched with one of EyeCare America's nearly 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists. Second Vice District Governor By 2nd Vice District Governor Jim Dunlop

Season Greetings, fellow Lions.

Region meetings are over this year, and lots of new and great ideas were given out at these meeting to help all of us fellow Lions improve how we can help others in our communities. Now we can get back to some of our clubs end of the year projects with our fellow Lions, like our Christmas tree sales, poinsettia sales, pancake days, and bell ringing for the Salvation Army.

Isn’t it great that we are so blessed to be able to take part in these holidays with our friends, family, and all of our fellow Lions?

The 5M1 mid-winter convention on January 11-13, 2013, is just around the corner, and your leaders have worked hard to make it a great mid-winter for you. Please show your appreciation by having a large contingent from your club.

I will be in charge of the first-timers contest, and I would appreciate the help of all the clubs in the district to make this year’s contest the best attended. Please do your best in seeing that all your members that are first-timers sign up this year. Thank you!

PDG Dudley and I still need your help in getting the information, plus a good photo of all our fellow Lions who have passed away this year, so we can honor them at this year’s mid-winter during the Friday night memorial service. Here is a list of some we are looking for and, if you know of some who are not on this list, please e-mail the photo(s) to Dudley Parsons ([email protected]). If you have sent in your club’s picture(s), thank you. If not, please get them in soon.

The Lions listed below have passed away since the 2012 District 5M1 Mid-Winter Convention, held last January. We do not have their pictures for the memorial service that will be held on Friday evening, January 11, 2013. The memorial service will be a much nicer event if we get the photos of these Lions.

If you do not have easy access to a scanner, please consider mailing the actual photo (color if possible)

to PDG Dudley at the address below. He will return it on the next business day.

The mortuary that handled the funeral will often have a digital picture of the deceased. Please consider contacting them and ask them to send the picture to PDG Dudley.

Lions Quest By PDG Dick Whitaker

Plans are taking shape for a Lions Quest training workshop to be scheduled for some time in January, either at the end of first semester or the beginning of the second semester of the school year. The workshop will be available for both teachers who are new to the program and those who need to be certified to use the Quest curriculum. It is also for teachers who have been trained but, as recommended, should take a re-training workshop if it has been at least five years since their first training workshop.

A letter has been sent to school superintendents in 5M1 informing them of the workshop. Through letters sent to the district clubs earlier this fall and from conversations with Lions at both the September zone meetings and the November region meetings, I now have a better idea of which schools are currently using Lions Quest, which have stopped using the program, and which schools have an interest in learning more about Quest. The letter sent to superintendents tried to address each situation as it relates to a particular school, depending on whether they have never used it, are using it now, or need to be encouraged to restart the program.

Again, I need to encourage Lions to support our efforts to get more schools involved in Lions Quest. There has to be personal contact from your Lions club with the school in your community. Those school personnel responsible for making decisions about using Lions Quest need to know your club will support them in whatever way is necessary, including helping with the cost of the program. As you have been told in the past, 5M1 will partner with your club in seeing that the costs to the schools are minimal.

While trying to get an idea of where we are at in the district with which schools are using Quest, I discovered that some schools have started using an anti-bullying program that involved special training for staff which, I’m certain, was done at considerable expense for the schools. What we need to make sure the school people understand is, throughout the Quest curriculum, there is a strong anti-bullying message built into the materials the teachers use at each grade level which the schools can have for little or no cost.

Please keep Lions Quest as one of the Lions programs your club supports by helping cover costs and by encouraging support for the program in your community. Let the people in your school know what the benefits are for the students and the community with the use of Lions Quest.

If you have questions, comments or suggestions for me to consider in working to get more schools using Lions Quest, please get in touch. I appreciate any help you can give me. [email protected] or 507-732-7361.

LIONS CHILDREN FIRST Lions who attended one of the November region meetings heard briefly about the Lions Children First program which, though it has been in existence since 2003, has not received much notice until now. International President Wayne Madden has, as part of his agenda for the 2012-13 Lions year, stressed helping children and youth thrive by using that program.

Lions Children First provides suggestions for hands-on service projects in three key areas:

• Food and shelter: to ensure that children have safe and healthy in which to live and receive adequate nutrition to fight off illness and develop healthy minds and bodies.

• Health: to provide children in need with adequate health care.

• Education and literacy: to ensure that children receive their right to education.

A first response to the above might be to think that these are programs are meant for areas considered to be third-

world countries. Unfortunately, these programs are needed in this country and right here in District 5M1.

I recently was told of a program starting in a number of school districts called “Backpack Friday” which involves sending food home on Friday in the backpacks of students who would not have enough food in their homes on the weekend for them to have nutritious meals on Saturday and Sunday. The Zumbrota-Mazeppa school district, for example, will begin the program in December and has identified thirty families that need this service.

In most counties, a social service agency is getting “Backpack Friday” started, but this doesn’t mean the Lions can’t get involved. The place to start is to contact someone - social worker, counselor, principal - in your school to get more information and, if there is no program, offer to help get one started.

Space doesn’t allow me to go into any more detail about Lions Children First, but at least you now have a better idea of what the program is all about. You can get more information and resources by contacting: LCI Health and Children’s Services by phone:

630-571-5466, e-mail: [email protected] or through www.lionsclubs.org.

If I can be of any assistance, please contact me.

Ostrander Lions Serve From the LeRoy Independent Article and Picture by Ginger Holm

The Wolf’s Den in Ostrander recently expanded its facility to accommodate its patrons and make room for more family-friendly fun! People from all around the area packed the house for the grand opening of the Wolf's Den’s new look when the celebration kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:45 a.m. this past Saturday.

Marge Lenz, president of the Ostrander Lions, spoke to the guests saying, “It is my privilege to congratulate the Wolf’s Den on the new addition that we celebrate today. The addition provides a pleasant atmosphere to socialize and enjoy great food and beverage, together with family and friends.”

Lenz further commented on the contributions the Wolf’s Den provides to the community of Ostrander, such as hosting pull tabs, which has made it possible for the Lions to donate several thousand dollars over the years to various organizations in and around the area and beyond. Such organizations as 4-H, Head Start, and area schools have benefitted from these donations. This month the Lions will be delivering dictionaries to third graders in LeRoy-Ostrander and Kingsland Schools.

Ribbon Cutting. Shown cutting the ribbon are Ostrander Lions, friends, employees, and owners.

When the ribbon was cut, everyone cheered, and even owner Royal Dempewolf was caught with a smile on his face!

The Rochester Morning Pride Lions club is pleased to announce that our Christmas Tree Fundraiser started on Saturday, November 17, 2012 and will run until Christmas. Our tree sales lot is located in the Gander Mountain parking lot by Wal-Mart North. The lot is open

Monday – Friday: Noon – 9:00 PM

Sundays: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Closed Thanksgiving Day

The photo below shows the club members and some members of a local football team unloading close to 1,000 trees getting ready for this year’s sale. The annual Christmas tree sale is our biggest fundraiser. All proceeds are donated to local and Lions charities.

Unloading Trees. Some members of a local football team helped the Lions unload the trees at the sale lot.

The event has been extremely successful. During the 2011 Christmas season, we sold over 1,200 trees and raised over $20,000. The tree sales event is successful because of the dedication of the club members and the loyalty of our customers. In addition, friends, family members, and local youth join the Lions to help out at the tree lot.

Here is a list of just some of the charities that benefit from this fundraiser:

- American Cancer Society - PossAbilities of Rochester

- Channel One Food Bank - Hope Lodge - Rochester Senior Center - Running Start - STC Vosh - Ronald McDonald House - Gif of Life Transplant House - Lupus Foundation - Crisis Nursery - Shining Stars Cheer Team - P.E.T. Delegate Information Mid-Winter Convention

By Lion Rosie Wadewitz, Cabinet Secretary

1. What are the club delegate guidelines?

Lions Club must be in good standing with Lions Clubs International and the district. Lions selected by the club as a delegate must have been a Lion for at least one year and a day. Past district governors are granted a fully-certified delegate status independent of the club delegates quota established below.

2. How many delegates for my club?

Clubs are entitled to one (1) delegate for each ten (10) members. Clubs with membership of 25 or less get two (2) delegates, and clubs with membership of 26 or more get three (3) delegates

Examples

Lions club has a membership of 78 gets eight (8) delegates, and a Lions Club has a membership of 23 gets two (2) delegates.

Remember that any past district governors are not included in the above delegate numbers. If a club has two PDG’s in the above examples, the first club would have a total of ten delegates and the second club would have a total of four delegates.

3. Who selects the delegates?

Clubs select their delegates. The selection should take place during the December or January club meeting, if held prior to the mid-winter convention. It’s best to also select a couple of alternate delegates.

4. Selected delegates arrive at the mid-winter convention. What happens next?

All delegates must be certified prior to the business meeting, which is held on Saturday, January 12st, 2013, at 9:10 a.m. SHARP. You can get certified at the credentials desk, which is separate from the convention registration desk. Certification times are Friday, January 11th, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 12th, 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Upon being certified, each delegate receives a delegate card. The delegate card is used for voting at the business meeting.

No delegate cards are issued after the business meeting is called to order.

All Lions are encouraged to attend the business meeting; however, only delegates have voting rights.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either District Governor Gloria or me.

Past President of Sons of Norway (Red Wing) Past President of Dawn Breakers Kiwanis Club Member of Many Red Wing City Commissions and Committees Volunteer for Disaster Rebuilding in Rushford, Minnesota, and Biloxi, Mississippi

I was born in Rochester, raised in Zumbrota, received a BA and MA degrees from Northern Michigan University and did advanced graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. I have been involved in Special Education for 31 years in the Red Wing School District and served as president of the Minnesota Council of Administrators of Special Education and as a national board member for that organization. My wife, Ruth, and I have been married for 44 years, and we have one son, Stanley III, who resides in Richfield, Minnesota.

I look forward to the opportunity to serve District 5M1 Lions as the 2nd vice district governor. During my time as a zone chair, I have been inspired by the energy of our local clubs as they serve their communities. If elected, I pledge to promote Lions’ service and the joy of being a Lion.

If you can't make it to the mid-winter convention, please! send your Parade of Green donations to District Treasurer Mark Marreel at 2623 59th St. NW, Rochester, MN 55901. Please send them before the convention.

Please! Write a check for each donation the club is making. It is easier to account for the donation that way. The cabinet chairpersons will be doing the accounting for their programs, so we need individual checks.
