New This Year

The Fiber Arts Sale Committee met in January to look at how we did and how we coulddo better. In planning your projects for the sale this year, there are some new rules to

keep in mind.

1. There will be a $10 minimum on items for 2012. You may group a couple of itemstogether to meet this minimum if you need to.

2. We decided not to accept leather items this year. We had some really cute things in the sale this year, but leather is notfiber. If leather is part of a fiber item, that would be okay, (like leather on a purse) or if the leather was woven, that wouldbe okay. Please check with JoAnn Loftus as our Review Committee chairperson if you have a question. We don’t wantyou to spend all your time on something and then find out that it’s not acceptable.

3. We’re sorry, but we cannot accept items made from a commercial pattern printed on a length of fabric. This is toomuch like a “kit” and doesn’t allow you to show your own creativity. As with any pattern, you need to make significantchanges to it to make it your own.

4. Items should not look like “production” items. We’re not looking for the quick and easy stuff advertised in magazines.We’re looking for things that show skill, creativity and craftsmanship.

5. If a particular item has been in the sale two times and hasn’t sold, it needs to be reworked before entering it again.This will help keep the sale fresh and is a challenge to you to figure out what to do with the item to make it moresaleable.

Fiber - It's What We Do!

A hearty thank-you to Estelle Pearson for sharing the results of her creativity and skills as a “textile engineer.”Interest in her cleverly constructed Othello jacket led to a special class offering. As often happens with exhibits,we are inspired to further our own technical abilities and are given ideas about what to make next!

Perhaps there will be much conversation and continued inspiration withDiscontinuousWefts: Imageryand Imagination in Thread, our exhibition for the months of March and April. Members have contributedtapestries from their collections for this show, and one outstanding piece has won the American TapestryAlliance Award of Excellence. Kitty Uetz was the judge for the award, and Cathie Beckman assisted thecommittee as curator.

Are you working on your entries for this year’s members’ challenge? The theme is sound/noise in honor ofthe Nick Cave exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum and our participation in his workshop. Submissions mustrefer to the theme in some way. You might create something that actually makes sound; an object that depictssomething that makes sound; a piece that contains something that might have been involved with makingsound at one time; and so on. Check the web site for many suggestions and for the details of the exhibit. Thedeadline for delivery of artworks to the Guild House is April 17th. As always there will be valuable prizes for theViewers’ Choice selections, and the EPIC Award will be passed on to a worthy contributor.

a great way to meet people, explore a new activity and enjoy sharing ideas.

Tracy McNulty, Study Group Coordinator

Recently a small group of Guild members completed a five-part design challenge using Ann Johnston’s book TheQuilter’s Book of Design. We would like to continue ourexplorations into design as a study group and have decidedto meet at 10 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each monthbeginning in March. Ginny Bolte will lead the group.

Our goals are

1) To be inspired by each other;

(2) To have a forum to discuss design problemsand to share outcomes of our process;

(3) To achieve better technical proficiency;

(4) To avoid strict “assignments”;

(5) To have fun.

With these goals in mind, we have chosen to call ourselves3-D—perhaps for Design, Develop, and Discuss but also forthe fact that our work will generally be classified as“sculptural.”

Our first theme (length of ongoing discussion to bedetermined by the participants) will be bags: handbags,purses, tote bags, cell-phone bags, shopping bags, oranything that could qualify as a carrier to move thingsaround. An art quilt panel that Ginny made for our finalmeeting is designated for a purse, so that led us to go in thisdirection.

Although all of us from the previous group are stitchers offabric (quilters or garment makers), we welcome participantsfrom any fiber interest area. Come for the first meeting(March 6th), and let’s see what develops. If nothing else, thisopportunity may be the show-and-tell that’s missing fromyour creative life!
