GUILD HOUSE RENOVATIONS’ UPDATE
Please make note that the Guild House will most likely be closed to all for the en-tire month of August. - EXCEPTION - There WILL BE a Sale Item Committee review session on Thursday, August 9. The renovation in the meeting room began the week of July 16th. Please respect the closure of the house. I'm aware that many of you have made alternative arrangements for study groups to meet at other locations. Thanks so much for your patience and co-operation. The re-opening date will be posted on the weekly E-announcements. Along with the meeting room renovations, we have made provisions to have our driveway redone. It entails creating a secondary drive up to the parking area as an en-trance. The gravel on top will be replaced with a smaller stone and then everything will be blacktopped or resurfaced. This work will begin in 2-3 weeks. It seemed a good time to do this work since the guild house is already closed. The Board has approved this project. The cost will be approximately $5,769.00 and will be paid for from the Preservation Funds. If you have any question please contact Joy Thaler or Pat Bennett.

I’d like to thank Karen Pischl for her dedication to the Guild as President this past year. She did an outstanding job and I wish her well as she tackles some challenging weaving projects and engages in some new endeavors on behalf of the guild.
“Invent your world. Surround yourself with people, color, sounds, and work that nourishes you.” SARK (Susan Ariel Rain-bow Kennedy) author of national bestseller Succulent Wild Wom-an: Dancing With Your Wonder-full Self.
I love summertime. I love the warmth, the color of the flowers and the trees, the songs of the birds and eating homegrown fruits and vegeta-bles and Putz’s creamy whip ice cream. There are summer vaca-tions, picnics with friends and out-door concerts. Cincinnati is fortu-nate enough this summer to be host-ing the World Choir Games. Howev-er, it’s also a good time to learn a new fiber skill. Whether it is experi-menting with a weave structure or learning new dyeing techniques, it’s what we are about. On Facebook, I saw some people, while traveling, were dabbling with their travel-size watercolor paints. How fun! Well, I
hope you are surrounding yourself with the people, color, sounds and work that nourishes you. And when the guild house reopens at the end of the summer after our renovation, I look forward to hear-ing what you did to nurture your creativity.

President
EXHIBITIONS UPDATE—AWARDS
And Paula Baumann’s woven and shaped saxophone was second run-ner-up.
We are extremely grateful to the busi-ness owners who supply our prizes each year. Please go out of your way to patronize Barb Gallagher (The Weavers Loft), Christine Mather (The Bead Shop in Madeira), and Norma Lawrence (Fiberge in Montgomery). They are gracious and generous supporters of our fiber efforts!
Linda Rouse received the coveted Golden Shuttle symbolizing the EPIC Award for her five guitar-related crea-tions in weaving and jewelry-making techniques. Each year the previous recipient selects the next one and has the responsibility of “interpreting” the acronym. Linda’s prize is for “Exceptional Proficiency, Inspiration, and Creativity.”
The next exhibition year will begin in our renovated meeting room with an entirely new installation system. We of the Exhibitions Committee extend our gratitude to Cathie Beckman, who is underwriting this upgrade to the Guild House in memory of Paddy Thornbury.
See you in September!
Barbara Moss,
Exhibitions Chairperson

The Crafts Report magazine publishes trends they see in the home decor business. This is from the July issue. It can be helpful to see if your items for the November sale fall in any of these categories that people are buying.
American Vintage
Using classic American motifs like numbers and flags and materials like denim and patchwork. Use of recycled materials is also popular.
The Marrakesh Express
Ethnic looks from the North African region are showing up more, using flat weaves and aged colors, and dis-tressed finishes.

Early Bird Review Session
Want to get your review over early and out of the way? The first session is Thursday, August 9, 10am to 2pm. We will also be photographing items that day for possible use on the postcard we send out announcing the sale.
Bring to the session some samples of the items you intend to sell. Let us know about how many of each item you intend to make to help us plan display space. If you have questions about pricing, dis-cuss it with the committee members. They’ve been doing this for several years and can tell you what similar items sold for last year.
We’re here to help you be successful at the sale—it’s for you AND the Guild.
Remember Honorary Members need not sign up for a volunteer job in order to sell their creations.

Linen Revival
“Rough” linens that show off a hand-woven texture are popular as are two-color tweeds and ani-mal patterns, such as zebra and alligator.
Graphic Modern
Some designers are using strong prints, often in just two colors, and graphic elements like polka dots and large scale florals.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

MINUTES
The Board Meeting of the Weavers Guild of Greater Cincinnati, Inc. was held on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the Guild House. The meeting began at 10:05 a.m. Karen Pischl, President, presided. Present were: Pat Bennett, Mary Anne Cella, Judy Dominic, Meg Frede, Barb Gallagher, Pam Gregory, Moya Jones, Jo Ann Loftus, Estelle Pearson, Linda Rouse, Joy Thaler, Alice Weitzenkorn, Judy Workman.
Board meeting minutes were approved as written as published in the May 2012 Newsletter.
Moya Jones presented a preliminary Donors List document for discussion. It includes our mission statement, an explanation paragraph, and list of donors broken into bands by donation amounts. Board members liked the format and banding setup. Moya will add one more category for $1000 and up. Members will have an opportunity to be an anonymous donor. Announcements will be placed on the weekly announce list & in the Weaver-bird.
Mary Anne Cella, chair of the strategic plan follow up committee, clarified her goals and asked for committee members.
Pat Bennett reported renovation plans are progressing and Guild house will be closed during renova-tions. Announcements will be in newsletter and online at June meeting. No yard mulching is need-ed this year.
Karen Pischl showed the Board a design for an informational large-sized postcard. It would include the 2012-13 meeting dates and times, programs, list of officers, study groups, website etc. The postcard could be mailed or handed out.
Barb Gallagher asked for approval to change fee for the Cheryl Mucken-fuss workshop to $50/day. Members will be able to pay for any workshop by credit card at the June meeting/picnic. Workshop aide description has changed and needs to be posted to guild website. Studio Crawl was a success and Marie has attendance statistics.
Karen Pischel reported Barbara Moss has kept track of by-law changes since 2007 and gave the information to Karen. Nothing official needs to be done at this time, but it is a good idea to keep this list. If you see any other changes let the President know.
Alice Weitzenkorn reported there are 264 members in 247 households. Membership early bird renewal: 62. Many have used the new online application process. This process makes Alice’s job much easier. She thanked Moya Jones for her work to get this system running.
The E-Newsletter with color looks great & will have links to the website.
Meeting was adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jo Ann Loftus, Acting Recording Secretary

Recently, Cindy Sturdevant and Frances McClure were honored in national publications for awards received in WGGC exhibits.
In our 2011 show at the downtown YWCA entitled Faces, Features, and Forms: The Human Body in Fiber, Cindy won the Handweavers Guild of America Award for Don’t Wanna Grow Up, her six-part self-portrait. All the 2011 HGA Award recipients are cited (with accompanying photographs of artworks) in the recent spring issue of “Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot.”
Frances was the winner of the American Tapestry Alliance’s Award for Excellence for Beyond the Desert, one of three pieces she submitted for our in-house juried tapestry exhibition during this past guild year. Recognition of this award, as well as Frances’ statement about her art and her life, can be seen on the ATA website.
(Incidentally, Frances won her own HGA Award for My Cancer, My Hair—another tapestry—at our 2010 group show at Xavier University.)
Judges for these two recent awards were, respectively, Sharon Bollen and Kitty Uetz.

There are seven woven Swatches for the 2011-12 Guild year available to each member who asked for a Swatch on last year’s member form or identified themselves as a weaver. Don’t worry about trying to remember if you checked the‘Swatch’ or ‘weaver’ box. I’ve got a list and have put names on the packets. The swatches were at our June picnic and I’ll bring them also to the September meet-ing. You can pick up your swatches from Ruth Archer or Millie Stratton at the Sept meeting or by coming to Ruth’s home in Springboro during the summer. If you live outside the greater Cincinnati area and don’t make it to the meet-ings, contact Ruth for mailing instructions.
