TIGER TALES - JAN. 8TH, 2016
Tiger Parents, Happy New Year Tiger Parents. I was so good to have the students back this week. The building was too quiet when they were away. Below you will see our Board of Trustee Kathi Livezey. Mrs. Livezey is our adopted Trustee for the 2016 School Board Appreciation Month. On January 12th she will be on campus to see all of the wonderful things that our staff and students do each and everyday. We are so blessed to have such wonderful community members on the Board and we appreciate all that they do for the 25,000+ students of McKinney ISD.
So...Thank You Mrs. Livezey for all that you do! Our students are involved in so many events this Spring, so please note the events section at the bottom of the page each week. Several very important events are coming up soon, such as our registration meetings, our AB Honor Roll Reception, SJMS Showcase Night, and many more wonderful opportunities for you to see how special our Tigers are! I can't wait to see you there. This weekend we will begin our Academic UIL season. We are particularly fond of the Academic UIL meets because it showcases our students academic abilities. If your child is participating this weekend, please remember UIL Academics is a team event and our Scott Johnson MS team as well as your child's event team is counting on them to be there on time and ready to perform. If they are not attend, the team could be disqualified and points will be deducted from the Scott Johnson Team. Please encourage your child to show the determination and excellence that is the focal point of our school. Have a great weekend.

Happy New Year!
After a festive holiday season, we are now
ready to launch the 2015-2016 Go Red For
Women campaign. We want people to
experience more of life's precious moments. So
does the American Heart Association, which is
why they've made better heart and brain health
their mission. Until there's a world free of heart
disease and stroke, the AHA will be there,
working to make a healthier, longer life
possible for everyone. So why do we partner
with the AHA? Life is why.
Our district is going red in support of the
American Heart Association on Friday,
February 26th. Let's encourage all campuses to
participate and collect donations. Together, let's all bring awareness and wear
RED.
All donations are tax deductible and will help support the efforts of the
American Heart Association in the areas of heart disease and stroke research,
education and advocacy.
Our school is why the American Heart Association is working to help kids,
families, and communities live healthier.
Mission Challenge... should you accept it: Next time you're at the grocery store, look for the American Heart Association's
Heart-Check Mark to make choosing healthy foods easier.

Heart Healthy Tips for 2016
What can we do to eat better?
Track what you eat. The first step to eating right is figuring out what we're actually eating, when and
why. Tracking what we eat and when will help us learn what drives our eating
decisions. How to Keep Track of What You Eat
Learn the AHA Nutrition Recommendations The eating pattern below shows the suggested number of servings from each
food group based on a daily intake of 1,600 or 2,000 calories. There is a right
number of calories for you, based on your age, activity level and whether you are
trying to lose, gain or maintain your weight. Diet and Lifestyle
Recommendations
EAT:
6-8 daily servings daily of grain products, with at least half as whole
grains.
4-5 servings of fruit daily and 3-5 servings of vegetables daily, in a
variety of colors and types.
2-3 servings daily of fat-free, 1% fat or low-fat dairy products (choose
fat-free/low-fat, low-sodium cheese).
3-6 oz. daily (cooked) of lean meats, skinless poultry or seafood, eat oily
fish at least twice a week.
3 to 5 servings per week of unsalted nuts, seeds and legumes.
LIMIT:
Fats and oils intake to 2-3 servings per day. Use liquid vegetable oils and
soft margarine most often.
Added sugars to no more than half of our discretionary calories and
sugary drinks to no more than 450 calories (36 oz) per week.
Sodium to less than 1,500 mg per day.
Did You Know?
Cardiovascular disease is our nation's most costly illness, accounting for $298
billion in direct and indirect costs each year. This cost is projected to exceed $1
trillion by 2030.
