Presenting The 2015 Circle of Champions Investors

The Mason Deerfield Chamber is excited to announce the 2015 Circle of Champions. Through investment in the growth and development from local businesses, the Chamber has the ability to create and provide programs, resources, products, services

and events to foster the growth and success of Mason-Deerfield’s thriving business community. By becoming a part of the Circle of Champions, member businesses become year-long sponsors of all Chamber programs and functions. To help increase exposure for

our Circle members, the three-tiered circle is placed on nearly all Chamber print and electric pieces throughout the year. As we continue to build a thriving business community, we would like to congratulate the 2015 Circle of Champions for investing in the overall health of the community the Chamber serves. Thank you for continuing to support all of the endeavors of the Chamber.

If you are interested in joining the 2015 Circle of Champions program, please contact Sherry Taylor at [email protected] or 513.336.0125.

2015 PriorityOutcomes Update

Things have been very busy at the Chamber. We have many individuals and businesses involved in the 2015 priority outcomes, and I am thrilled to be able to provide an update on where we stand against them through the end of May 2015.

A top priority was to rebrand the Chamber to drive clarity and purpose. Lead by Steve Morse, we were able to accomplish this and launch the new logo and brand on May 21st at our annual lunch. In case you missed it, we hope we have created a brand that will live in the community and our programs as we move forward. Economic prosperity, business advocacy, and connections for success are MADE through our members, the catalytic leaders and change agents for Mason Deerfield.

We have developed a new investors’ circle program providing our members the opportunity to further invest in the activities of the Chamber. Lead by David Berring, the Circle of Champions program yields 9 current investors who have become year-long sponsors of the Chamber activities. If you have an interest in getting involved, please let me or Dave know.

Things are ramping up with our Women Business Leaders MADE program. Lead by George Sehi, we have 20 women leaders meeting and planning for the best ways to bring women in the Mason Deerfield area together in order to make them more successful leaders. Keep an eye out as we are hoping to have our kickoff event in October.

The Ambassador Committee has gone through a complete revamp. Lead by Mike Glen, the team has positioned itself to welcome new participants to get involved based on their interest and skill level. The committee now has three subcommittees: events, member celebrations, and business watch. Would you like to join or know more about what the team is all about? Please let me or Mike know.

We have strengthened ourselves at the Warren County level through our involvement in the Warren County Chamber Alliance. Board Chair, Randy Kuvin, and I attended the first DC Fly-In lead by the Warren County Chamber Alliance, and we look forward to continuing to build relationships and advocate on behalf of Mason Deerfield businesses at the local, state, and national level.

We are looking forward to finishing out the 2nd quarter strong and begin to work on even more of the priority outcomes in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Stay tuned, and as always, if you would like to get involved, please let us know.

Best,

Sherry TaylorPresident/CEO

From the Desk ofThe Chair

•Small businesses create two-thirds of the net new jobs annually, employ more than half of theprivate- sector workforce, and generate nearly 50 percent of annual GDP. •Today, there are 3,348 federal regulations in the pipeline, with nearly 1/3 impacting small businessdirectly. (Source: The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, Unified Agenda 2013)•According to the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index, small business owners have cited regulations as atop impediment to conducting business for over 65 months in a row. (Source: NFIB Small Business Optimism Index) •The United States fell out of the top ten ranks in the ease of starting a business, according to World Bankdata. In fact, the World Bank found that it’s easier to start a new business in Portugal, Romania, Panama, Hungary and Belarus than in the U.S. (Source: U.S. World Bank)•283,615 full-time government employees were dedicated to drafting and enforcing regulations in 2012,while fewer than 50 employees at OMB are responsible for reviewing the new regulatory mandates to ensure they are justified and accurate prior to implementation (Source: “Growth in Regulators’ Budget Slowed by Fiscal Stalemate: An Analysis of the U.S. Budget for Fiscal Years 2012 and 2013,” The George Washington University and Washington University in St. Louis)•From 2003-2010, one-third of major rules, costing $100 million or more, did not go through public reviewand input, despite federal requirements for public comment. (Source: GAO Report)

The Mason Deerfield Chamber’s mission is to advance the interests of business and make Mason-Deerfield, and our surrounding communities, a great place to live, work, visit, play, and invest. We are, in fact, the only organization dedicated exclusively to helping you, our members, grow your top and bottom lines. So the answer to the above question is a quite obvious and resounding…YES!

I had the privilege recently, along with Sherry Taylor, to join 30 other local government officials and business leaders on Warren County’s first official Washington DC “Fly-In.” During the whirlwind 2 days, organized by the Warren County Chamber Alliance, we met with officials from more than 20 different federal agencies and had substantive discussions with Senators Brown and Portman, and Representatives Chabot, Turner, and Wenstrup. We were able to take some important first steps in establishing a dialogue and relationship with those closest to matters that have an impact on your business, and those in a position to influence positive policy change.Of course, the federal government is but one piece in the burdensome regulatory puzzle. The Ohio and local political apparatus requires our attention as well, and in fact, more directly impacts our members’ business activities. Within the Chamber’s Strategic Plan recently developed and approved by the Board, is a renewed commitment to the Chamber’s engagement with government affairs. Our participation in the Fly-In was merely the first step. The Mason Deerfield Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee is forming now, and we will begin meeting and developing our strategies soon. Contact Sherry or me if you have any interest in joining what promises to be a very impactful team. I look forward to working with you to affect change at the federal, state and local level beneficial to the Mason-Deerfield business community.

Sincerely,

Randall S. KuvinChairman, Board of DirectorsMason Deerfield Chamber

Since the end of the nancial crisis in 2009 and the subsequent passage of the Dodd-Frank Act in 2010, community banks have had to adapt to a new nancial and regulatory landscape. Community banks have long been the backbone of the U.S. banking system. Since their inception, they have served as a driving force behind the growth of small to mid-sized businesses from major cities to rural outposts across the country. Unlike large banks, community banks see their success linked with that of the community as a whole. This is true with both their individual and business customers. The growth of community banks is often contingent on the bank leadership’s ability to recognize and react quickly to its customers’ changing needs. Many community banks have weathered the past decades by maintaining an aggressive yet conservative business strategy.

There are three signicant competitive opportunities for community banks: local decision making, small business solutions and customer service that goes above and beyond expectations. Customers want to work face to face with bankers that have the authority to make decisions about their loans and deposit accounts. Community bankers are active in their communities and are willing to build lasting relationships to help their customers meet personal nancial goals. Small businesses want to deal with local decision makers and not be forced to deal with credit committees that can often be out of state. Customers are loyal to community banks because of their personalized customer service. Community banks tend to have less employee turnover and pride themselves on being relationship builders. Customers want to know who their banker is and know that they are invested in their community. Community bankers focus less on sales and more on servicing their customers. The goal of every community banker is to exceed expectations and build lasting relation-ships one customer at a time.

Enroll in Destination: Excellence programs by May 29 to earn rebatesAs you may be aware, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) is switching toprospective billing July 1 for private employers. That means the workers’ compensation premium policy period is moving from a six-month period to a full scal year; it will run from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. Public employers, who will transition to prospective billing Jan. 1, 2016, will remain on a calendar year policy period. As part of the prospective billing implementation, enrollment is currently underway for private employers to sign up for several of the Destination: Excellence programs. Destination: Excellence is a bundle of programs BWC oers that help businesses improve workplace safety, enhance injured worker care and save money on workers’ compensation costs.

Private employers may sign up with BWC between now and May 29 for these programs:

Industry-Specic Safety Program, a 3 percent premium rebate for completing loss-prevention activities; Drug-Free Safety Program, a 4 or 7 percent premium rebate for incorporating an alcohol and drug testing and education program; Transitional Work Bonus Program, up to a 10 percent premium rebate for successfully returning an injured worker released with restrictions back to work. BWC’s new Destination: Excellence brochure includes more details about the programs and enrollment deadlines.

Coming soon … in late May, BWC will mail all private employers a notice of estimated annual premium (like this sample). This notice will be based on your reported payroll for July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. It is not a bill, but please review it for accuracy and contact BWC if you feel something is incorrect.

Additional information on prospective billing, including time lines, frequently asked questions and key dates to remember, are available at bwc.ohio.gov.
