Message from the SAINT Standing CommitteeWelcome to SAINT 2011! SAINT is sponsored by IEEE Computer Society and the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ). Designed 11 years ago to provide a forum for resarchers and practitioners from the academic, industria, public, and government sectors to share their latest innovations on internet technologies and applications, SAINT has been held in conjunction with IEEE COMPSAC (the IEEE Signature Conference on Computer Software and Applications) since 2008. SAINT is also a signature conference of IPSJ and the IEEE Computer Society.

The internet has revolutionized and changed the way we communicate, socialize, entertain, access information, and conduct business. It has evolved into a pervasive ecosystem of connected computers, mobile devices, sensors, home appliances, and a variety of other gadgets. This evolution has led to a deep intertwining of the physical, social, and digital worlds, raising new research agendas and challenging our understanding of the requirements for a vastly interconnected world.

SAINT 2011 is being held in Munich, Germany. We sincerely hope you enjoy both this beautiful city and our exciting conference while you are here. On behalf of the SAINT Standing Committee, Steering Committee, and the 2011 Program and Organizing Committee, I extend my deepest thanks for your contributions to our program, whether you are a volunteer organizer, author, or student. Enjoy the conferences!

Katsuyuki Yamazaki (Yama)Chair, SAINT Standing Committee

Joint COMPSAC/SAINT PanelInternational Perspectives on the Computed World: Software Beyond the Digital Society

Chair: Stephen S. Yau, Arizona State University, USA Panelists: Alan Blatecky, National Science Foundation, USA; Kazuo Furukawa, Hitachi, Ltd., Japan; Wolfgang Kellerer, NTT DOCOMO, Germany; Alkis Konstantellos, European Commission, Belgium; Zhi Jin, Peking University, China

Creating the digital society and beyond needs all aspects of computing, software development, and software systems engineering. The computed world embraces not only the Information Technology world, but also the physical world. Building on computationally smart environments, and trustworthy, secure, and dependable distributed software this panel explores different perspectives on developing software beyond the digital society Panelists will each address several international perspectives in a brief statement, with the bulk of the panel being discussion and audience interaction. Panelists will address their vision for software beyond the digital society the major impediments to achieving this vision; opportunities for collaboration across industry, academic, funding agency, and international boundaries; possible negative impacts or risks of developing software beyond the digital society, including societal, security, and ethical considerations; and educating students, architects, and society as users of the proposed vision.

Joint Keynote #1: From Embedded Systems to Cyber-physical Systems: Research Challenges and Application AreasProf. Dr.-Ing. Reinhold E. Achatz, Corporate Vice President of Siemens AG Abstract : In all of the Siemens sectors, Industry, Energy, and Healthcare, embedded systems are an essential part of our products, systems, and solutions. Also, in general, embedded systems and software-based systems surround us. This fits also well to the motto of this year’s COMPSAC “The computed world: software beyond the digital society”. There is a strong trend that embedded systems are being networked together and interact with each other in increasingly complex ways. Especially when there is a strong focus on the interaction between the elements, one speaks of “cyber-physical systems” or the “internet of things”. The trend to increased use of cyber-physical systems offers new opportunities, both in the research space as well as for new applications. This keynote will provide insights into how Siemens has been active in both of these areas.

Joint Keynote #2: Embracing Uncertainty: The New Machine LearningDr. Chris Bishop, Distinguished Scientist at Microsoft Research Cambridge Abstract : Computers are based on logic, but must increasingly deal with real-world data that is full of uncertainty and ambiguity. Modern approaches to machine learning use probability theory to quantify and compute with this uncertainty, and have led to a proliferation in the applications of machine learning, ranging from recommendation systems to web search, and from spam filters to voice recognition. Most recently, the Kinect 3D full-body motion sensor, which has become the fastest-selling consumer electronics product in history, relies crucially on machine learning. Furthermore, the advent of widespread internet connectivity, with centralised data storage and processing, coupled with recently developed algorithms for computationally efficient probabilistic inference, will create many new opportunities for machine learning over the coming years. The talk will be illustrated with tutorial examples, demonstrations, and real-world case studies.
