WELCOME

Dear Colleague,

We cordially invite you to join us at NYSORA’s 11th Annual Symposium on Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management,

September 22 – 23, 2012. Please note that starting this year, NYSORA annual programs will be held in September as opposed to the traditional

month of December. The reason for this change is simple; that the program has grown substantially over the years, and to accommodate this growth,

we decided to move the conference to a time of the year with less conflicts and much better weather. New York City is at its best in the fall and

there will be more opportunities for delegates to enjoy the sights and take in the city. Additionally, avoiding the holidays will allow individuals to

plan their travel arrangements and lodging with more ease and cost-efficiency.

The need for a comprehensive annual review of developments in regional anesthesia is obvious. The subspecialty of regional anesthesia and acute

pain medicine has been dramatically transformed over the past several years necessitating constant updates in pharmacology, technique, practice

protocols, as well as indications and clinical considerations. The introduction of ultrasound in clinical practice has made the subspecialty more

precise and intricate. Nerve blocks facilitate pain management, fast tracking, promotion of early mobilization, decreased hospital stay, and may

reduce overall healthcare costs. Attending NYSORA conferences help delegates stay up-to-date in the field by reviewing the new or updated

knowledge in regional anesthesia.

The NYSORA September symposium will be the largest and most ambitious to date. In addition to the intense parallel programs with some of the

most sought-after national and international speakers, NYSORA will offer a multitude of highly versatile and focused workshops. To meet the

demands raised by the delegates, the Saturday morning workshop will focus on basic ultrasound-based regional anesthesia techniques designed for

colleagues who are novice in the field. Delegates will be able to scan, become familiar with the ultrasound anatomy and practice on a meat-model to

develop knowledge of anatomy, basic ultrasonography and needle maneuvering. The Saturday afternoon workshops will be geared for intermediate

and advanced level delegates. In addition to the basic techniques, the intermediate workshop will also focus on expanding range of ultrasound-

guided peripheral nerve blocks as well as more interactive discussion with the faculty. The workshop on ultrasound-guided pain procedures will

include special sessions designed for the pain clinicians who would like to start utilizing ultrasound-guided pain prevention techniques. Finally,

colleagues who are in need of more advanced direction will have the opportunity to attend our advanced nerve block workshop. This session is

intended for those who already practice ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks and are in need of advanced instruction. Sunday’s workshops

will be more in depth compared to previous years. All Sunday workshop sessions will be preceded by a short review of anatomy upon which the

delegates will see practical demonstrations and scanning techniques.

This year’s symposium will also feature a superior humanities program with a wider variety of topics and discussions. Some of last year’s topics

included choosing wines, cooking discussions triathlon preparation, and how to expand your anesthesiology practice. And how could one forget the

infamous Saturday evening social event featuring a plethora of great music, live performances, dancing, and excitement? As always there will be a

limited free buffet and open bar. This is truly a spectacular event where everyone gets together for more knowledge sharing, networking, and

unforgettable fun.

The NYSORA symposium has become a staple for state-of-the-art education in regional anesthesia and acute pain management. The 2012

September program will be truly special. It will feature expanded sessions, as well as PBLDs (Problem Based Learning Discussions) for the first

time. Multiple opportunities will be available for enhanced learning and discussion amongst experts and the audience. The program will also

incorporate a number of different workshops and didactic sessions. This allows delegates to choose which workshops and sessions best suit their

individual needs and interests. Abstract presentations will also be included for enhanced and interactive sharing of new knowledge. For this one of a

kind educational opportunity, we have chosen some of the very top opinion leaders in the field.

We look forward to seeing you in September for what promises to be an unforgettable educational event.

Knobology/Target Practice Station

The basic ultrasound guided nerve block workshop is crafted for participants without significant experience in performing peripheral nerve blocks or ultrasound guided blocks. The main emphasis during this workshop will be on the practical aspects of hands-on scanning, learning tips and tricks, how to recognize the relevant anatomy, and discussing the essence of establishing successful and safe blocks while deemphasizing a multitude of technique variations. The participants will also have an opportunity for ample practice on live models as well as on mannequins/meat models.

Every block demonstration will be preceded by a brief description using power point presentation. After presentation the part icipants practice their skills by scanning on live models under the guidance of the instructors using the described techniques.

A knobology and target practice station will be available throughout to allow hand-eye coordination practice. This station will allow participants, under guidance of an instructor, to test drive some of the common equipment used for peripheral nerve blocks on a specially designed meat model that simulates the feel and resistance of human tissue.

Intermediate nerve blocks workshop is best suited for participants who are somewhat familiar with the techniques being taught and looking to expand their scanning confidence. They are interested in learning about technique variations and have would like an opportunity to discuss practical challenges and issues with the faculty. This workshop is geared toward participants wanting to expand on the number of peripheral nerve blocks they perform in their practice. Enough flexibility is built in to this workshop to accommodate participants of basics through intermediate skill level.

Optimizing Image on US and Phantom Target Practice

The Comprehensive Basic and Intermediate Hands-On Ultrasound Workshop is designed to offer an overview of anatomical facts, indications, tips for success, pharmacological choices and techniques to accomplish the sonographic views necessary for the successful performance of blocks.

Each technique will be presented by faculty during a 5-10 minute slide presentation. The attendees will then be divided into groups of 5 to 6 for practical demonstrations on models. During the practical aspect of the workshop, the emphasis will be placed on acquiring the knowledge of Sonoanatomy, Sonographic Landmarks, Scanning Techniques to Optimize Target Imaging, as well as Strategies to Identify Common Artifacts and Avoid Complications. There will be opportunities for hands-on scanning practice using live and/or phantom models.

This workshop is designed to offer a wide range of ultrasound guided regional anesthesia techniques to participants. Ample time will be available for participants to acquire the necessary skills to maintain a sonographic view of the essential anatomy and needle advancement in the same plane.

The format of the workshop is optimally suited for retention of information and acquiring the necessary skills to employ ultrasound guided nerve blocks clinically.
