PICKERING COLLEGE THANK YOU TO DONORS 2013-2014 3

Albert Camus said “Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.” What a perfect way to think about giving to education, in itself a commitment to the future. This past school year (2013-2014) our community enthusiastically exhibited their understanding of the need to be generous in supporting the unique and cutting-edge education we are known for here at Pickering College.

We had a remarkable year for philanthropy and fundraising, with nearly $1.2 million raised. When asked—to help support endowments, to make an annual gift, to attend or sponsor an event, or, to begin to support the ambitious Campus Master Plan—our community generously responded. And that conviction is contagious. We can all take an active role in making Pickering College better than ever.

What does this generous philanthropic and event support result in? In approximately three years, we have nearly doubled scholarships and bursaries available to deserving students. Innovation in the classroom is the new normal at Pickering with the launch of the Global Leadership Program, which is fast gaining international recognition for its future-focused teaching methods, and enjoys the support of students, parents and teachers alike. More intensive outdoor education initiatives, especially at Blue and Silver farm, include open-air biology classes, snowshoeing, hibernation projects and so much more. Our Radio/Communications Technology program has a new online and in-studio class that is changing the way communications technology is taught. And so many other activities, from debate to athletics to student leadership are available to ensure that we keep “finding the light” in every student.

Our alumni show us that the education they received on the Hilltop stood them in good stead to make positive change in the world around them—the articles in the Winter 2015 issue of The Pillars show you just a few examples of this. Today’s students will inherit an increasingly challenging and competitive world. Our support for the programs and facilities at their school shows them our conviction that generosity in the present stands to benefit the future.

Thank you for your steadfast support for Pickering College and the opportunities it provides.

Peter Sturrup Ian Proudfoot Kelly MasonHeadmaster Chair, Pickering College Board of Directors Chair, Annual Giving

WelcomeGreetings from the Headmaster, the Chair of the Pickering College Board of Directors and the Chair, Annual Giving.

Page 4: Thank You - Pickering College...The “Lamp of Learning,” as found in the Pickering College crest, recognizes those who have given for the past five or more consecutive years. 8

Tonight we are here to say thank you. To celebrate with our friends, our colleagues, our PC community. And, it has been a year worth celebrating!

Annual Giving broke new records. The number of families participating in Annual Giving is increasing and the number of families—both locally and internationally—who are active in monthly giving has reached a new record.

This is all great news...and you are all a big part of this change. You are the leaders who are talking about the need to support Annual Giving. You are leading by example.

You have all heard me talk about Pickering College’s history of ground-breaking approaches to the process of education. First in Canada with an advisor system. First with a Director of physical education, focusing on the “whole child” education: mind, body and spirit. The list goes on.

Headmaster Joseph McCulley said “All education that is going to be good education must, in some form or another, be progressive education.” McCulley was Headmaster from 1927 to 1947. Truly ahead of his time.

And now our Headmaster, Peter Sturrup, has taken up that torch and is once again lighting the way toward the future of progressive education. As is Pickering’s tradition he is not only lighting the way…he is leading the way.

I truly believe that leadership will be this generation’s call to action.

Pickering College is ground-breaking on the global stage with its Global Leadership Program. We are being seriously recognized as innovators.

[Today’s students] will be the mentors that come back and share their global experiences with the next generation of students.

So, it is up to us, now, today—to pick up the torch—to support our kids, our Headmaster, our school, our community and ensure that our students—today and tomorrow—are a part of Pickering College’s legacy of progressive, innovative education.

Kelly Mason, Chair, Annual Giving, and proud parent (with husband Malcolm) of Daniel ’18

Pickering College is pleased to announce that Kelly Mason was voted Chair of the PC Board of Directors at the AGM in November 2014.

Annual GivingPC Parent and Corporation member Kelly Mason assumed the role of Chair, Annual Giving in 2012. The Chair is key in providing enthusiasm for and understanding of philanthropic giving to our community at large. The following are excerpts from Kelly Mason’s speech at our 2014 Circle of Friends Reception.

PICKERING COLLEGE THANK YOU TO DONORS 2013-2014 5

Circle of Friends 2014Pickering College is thankful to our generous Leadership Donors. Our Circle of Friends society recognizes donors who have made a gift of $1,000 or more during the fiscal year (July 1, 2013 –June 30, 2014). Each year, we are delighted to honour these generous donors at a private reception.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS RECEPTION 2014Leadership donors and Board and Corporation members of Pickering College were welcomed at a beautiful reception at Dawn and David Beswick’s home in early October, in thanks for their generous philanthropic support for our school.

Led by Kelly Mason, Chair, Annual Giving, guest speakers for the evening included Sanjay Gupta ‘20 and Meghan Beswick ‘20. The students shared their award-winning speeches from last year’s Junior School public speaking competition. Following the outstanding student speakers, Dawn and David Beswick introduced a video highlighting the school’s Strategic Plan and Campus Master Plan. The film knit together the wonderful history of PC with our bright future; culminating in the Light the Way campaign. The presentation concluded with students Sydney Stevenson ‘17 on lead vocals and guitar accompanied by Daniel Mason ‘18 and alumnus David Howard ‘88, performing Light it Up by For King and Country. Our sincere thanks to all of our donors who support Pickering College. Your contributions keep our school on the leading edge of learning.

THE JOSHUA WEINZWEIG CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAMThe Joshua Weinzweig Creative Writing Program is a unique program at Pickering College that provides curriculum-based and extra-curricular support for the development of young writers. We are proud to showcase this program in memory of Joshua Weinzweig ’91. We deeply appreciate the generosity of Daniel Weinzweig in setting up and growing the endowment fund that sustains the program.

Endowment giving offers the opportunity to create a lasting legacy. Endowment gifts are not spent; rather they are invested in perpetuity. The income provides a stable source of annual funding to support the school’s priorities. These funds are often donated by our alumni with the intent to provide for future generations of students. This year, PC awarded financial aid to 20% of our students—the most ever, thanks to our generous endowment donors.

Page 16: Thank You - Pickering College...The “Lamp of Learning,” as found in the Pickering College crest, recognizes those who have given for the past five or more consecutive years. 8

Every year, the graduating class leaves a legacy to Pickering College—contributions that help to provide learning opportunities for future generations of PC students and acknowledges the value of the teachers and experiences that the students have enjoyed at the school.

The Class of 2014 chose to support the Athletics Department and the Student Life program in addition to their Class Endowment Fund.

Led by Grace Hilton ‘14, Student Committee Rep and Student Chair of the Grad Fundraising Committee, a sundae bar at Senior School lunch and cot-tage-bound cooler packs yielded outstanding results.

Mr. and Mrs. FitzGerald, Grad Gift Parent Chairs, and parents of Meaghan ‘14, Brendan ‘15 and Garrett ‘17, encouraged the grad families to participate, as a legacy for this marvelous Class of 2014.

100% of the 2014 grads were accepted into the university of their choice; including universities in the US, UK and top schools in Canada.

GRANDPARENT & SPECIAL FRIEND AFTERNOONPickering College held another enjoyable Grandparent and Special Friend af-ternoon on May 8, 2014. Preceding the Springfest concert, students from Kin-dergarten to Grade 6 were able to invite their Grandparent(s) and/or Special Friend(s) for a visit to the school. Refreshments were served in the Meeting Room, where guests were treated to student speeches by selected students from Grade 6 and introduced to PC’s new Grandparent Chair, Ajit Khanna. Mr. Khanna spoke of the exciting future of Pickering College with respect to the Strategic Plan and the Global Leadership Program.

The highlight of the afternoon was of course when the students entered the Meeting Room—their eyes lighting up when they spotted their Grandparent/Special Friend. Both students and Grandparents/Special Friends then had the opportunity to create a craft together led by the Junior School Art Council. A memorable afternoon was had by all!

A GREAT DAY OF GOLF!Just a day after a ferocious storm closed the course, the 15th Annual Pickering College Golf Tournament, presented by Serpa BMW, went off without a hitch. Alumni from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and 2000s were in attendance, and even a newly-minted 2014 alumnus, whose team won the tournament overall! Guests also included current and alumni parents, friends and supporters of our school and an excellent showing of school suppliers, all in their finest golf form. Golfers were ably supported and assisted by PC staff and many kind volunteers who greeted each guest through the course and were there to bid them farewell at the end of the night. The winning foursome of the Tournament included James Quinn-Rabot ‘14, Mark Sochanjwskyj ‘15, Evan Lynch and Conner Michaud.

More than $50,000 was raised for Pickering College, for the purchase of a new Zamboni for our arena. Additionally, more than $9,000 in Gifts in Kind were received.

Event Sponsors & Partners cont. Ways to GiveAt Pickering College we are inspired that our community—parents, alumni, Board and Corporation, staff, family and friends alike—demonstrate their pride in and commitment to our Spirit of Community by lending their philanthropic support to the Annual GIving campaign and fundraising events. With the Campus Master Plan underway, your continued support is more important than ever!

Gifts of Cash, Cheque or Credit Card: You can choose to make a one-time gift or a monthly gift.

Gifts of Securities and Mutual Fund Shares: A great way to reduce your capital gains tax by donating the appreci-ated value to PC. It’s a wonderful way to benefit both you and the school.

Matching Gifts: Many companies offer a Matching Gift program. Please contact your HR Department to enquire whether a Matching Gift is possible.

Monthly Giving: Giving monthly is easy and conve-nient. Your monthly donation can be charged to your credit card (to earn those points!) or you may charge your school account. This is a great way to have your small, manageable monthly amount make a large impact.

Commemorative/Tribute Gifts: Through your donation, you may choose to pay tribute to someone special. This gift can be made in honour of a teacher, advisor, coach, or friend who has had a positive influence and made a difference in your PC experience.

Grad Gift: The graduating class independently decides upon an area of the school they wish to support each year. The money raised is directed towards their chosen area/department as well as the establishment of an endowment fund in benefit of future PC students.

International Gifts: PC uses FRISBE (Friends of Independent Schools and Better Education) who facilitate donations from U.S. alumni and friends to Canadian Independent Schools. They are a licensed U.S. non-profit organization and will issue you an IRS tax receipt. We are happy

to send a Canadian charitable tax receipt to donors residing outside of North America.

Planned Giving: Please join PC’s Firelighter community by making a gift to PC as part of your estate planning. You will have the comfort of knowing that you are ensuring that the Spirit of Community, so profound in Pickering College, lives on for future generations.

You may choose to make a Gift of Appreciated Property, a Gift of Annuities, or a Bequest.

For further information about PC’s Firelighters or making a gift of securities, please contact Kim Bilous, Executive Director, Development at 905-895-1700 ext. 260 or [email protected].
