Proceeds from this year’s tour will be directed toward the Pickering College Light The Way capital building campaign, and to Doane House Hospice. Doane House Hospice is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for its clients by providing non-medical support to those living with a life-threatening illness, as well as bereavement care for friends and family members. Thank you to Doane House Hospice volunteers for the important support they provide to our community.

Thank you to our community partners who have worked with the 2017 committee to bring this event to our guests. Over 200 businesses have contributed to the success of the 13th annual tour. Pickering College values its relationships with community members, and is pleased to provide local businesses with exposure to over 3,000 constituents through this event.

It always seems to me that as Christmas approaches, our lives become a little more busy and a little more noisy than that to which we might normally be accustomed. Anxious voices in shopping malls, excited

childrens’ shrieks of delight, Christmas songs on every speaker, Christmas cheer on every lip; hanging lights, trimming trees, wrapping and exchanging gifts, traveling to spend time with family and tidying up work or school before the holidays. It is a wonderful, joyful, generous, frantic, exhausting and unforgettable time of year.

And yet, in the midst of all of that, I find the best and most fulfilling moments are those times of peaceful solitude. Those times - pondering a silent, blinking light, or staring into the calming crackle of a warm fire, or listening to the hushed power of a silent snowfall – those times are when the deeper message of the season is conveyed. In some ways it seems, that message can only be caught when there is an opportunity to find it in the stillness of the moment. And the message that is truly important is that compassion, generosity, harmony and sacrifice must be the foundations for a world filled with peace.

Each year I have the honour of immersing myself in all of the beauty of the holiday home tour. Each year I marvel at how beautiful and elegant and timeless the homes all look and how happy and engaged all of the participants are. And yet, in the midst of all of that activity, I treasure those precious moments of quiet stillness to consider how lucky I am to be a part of a community that creates a world that reinforces the deeper meaning of Christmas.

This tour, and our support for our partner organizations, would not happen without the tireless efforts of our Holiday Home Tour Co-Chairs, Susan Cooper and Donna Fordyce. We are most grateful for their many months of effort, and that of the whole hard-working Committee, ably supported by Pickering College Events Manager, Shelley Frank. notice the crest inlaid in the tile floor. The Pickering College crest was developed in 1892 and serves as a daily reminder of our heritage and our values.

Entering the Joseph McCulley Meeting Room, your eyes will be drawn to the art on the walls, representing the Canadian provinces, eight of which were painted by Group of Seven member Franz Johnston. This is the heart of Pickering College, the place of Morning Meeting, a time to gather in the collective spirit of community, to celebrate our accomplishments, to share our common challenges, to raise questions about our responsibilities and to inspire our actions.

Pickering College has been a proud and active member of the Newmarket community for over 100 years. The school officially opened here in 1909, operating as a co-educational school until 1917, when its buildings were turned over to the Canadian government for use as a military hospital during and after World War I. It reopened in September 1927, when it became a boys-only boarding school. The school returned to its co-educational roots in 1992 and now offers programs from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 for day and boarding students.

Pickering College is today, as it has always been, a special place where students develop the social conscience, confidence and skills to shape the future. Graduates leave with exceptional academic competency and solid characters, shaped by the breadth and depth of their experiences at Pickering College.

Thank you!It is hard to imagine that we are celebrating our 13th Annual Holiday Home Tour! Year after year this event is a success thanks to the tireless work, dedication and professionalism of our volunteers. Without you we could not plan such an exciting event, enjoyed by so many members of our community, nor could we have raised tens of thousands of dollars to support local charities such as Literacy Council York-Simcoe, York Region Women’s Shelter, Jennifer Ashleigh Children’s Foundation, Southlake Regional Health Centre, The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Yellow Brick House and Doane House Hospice.
