FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we take another break from the league to compete in this year’s FA Trophy.

The FA Trophy will provide some respite for both side’s this afternoon after a testing start to the 2013/14 league campaign. Both outfits are buoyed by recent victories though, with the Mead grabbing a 1-0 win last time out here at the SCT and Jimmy Cooper’s Met Police side beating Leiston 2-1 last weekend.

The two sides have already met here this season as they fought out a 0-0 draw, and both will be hoping to embark on a cup run of sorts this afternoon.

We’re not back here for two and a half weeks now when we face Bognor Regis as next Saturday’s game has been postponed - we are now travelling to Hendon next weekend. All fixture changes can be found on page 32.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good afternoon everyone and, firstly, let me welcome the players and officials of Met Police to our new home here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

Today’s game is the FA Trophy First Qualifying Round and sees us take on the Met having already met back in August, with a 0-0 draw being played out here at the SCT.

We registered our first home league win of the campaign a fortnight ago against East Thurrock - I have said I believe we will start to turn the corner.

Don’t get me wrong, we defended very well for a 1-0 win over a good East Thurrock side, including a Man of the Match performance by Rob Budd in goal.

It was a bit ironic though that, after two Thamesmead players had chosen to move to East Thurrock instead of staying to help us in our first Ryman Premier campaign, one was subbed and the other made the mistake for our goal.

But such is football, and we still wish them well for their future endeavours.

The new players that Keith has added to the side are now settling in and we’re starting to look more balanced as well as with extra pace up front.

Buoyed by the three points, we travelled to Kingstonian in Surrey last Sunday, although with the amount of rain that had fallen I was surprised the game was still on - the pitch was completely fine when we arrived, though.

We had to go without our influential captain, Lewis Tozer, due to suspension after his dismissal in the FA Cup, and we started the game a bit shaky, going behind after only ten minutes.

Things were worse when Tyrus was stretchered off just minutes later after being clattered by both their full-back and centre-half simultaneously, resulting in a very painful dead leg and hip injury - fingers crossed that he’s available for Keith this afternoon.

Rob Budd made some good saves and new signing Karl Beckford was unlucky with a great free-kick - it was heading for the top corner before their ‘keeper tipped it away.

We held out until half-time with the score still only at 1-0, but losing Tyrus proved a big blow as his partnership with Javlon Campbell looks promising.

We started the second half much better after

Keith had rearranged the team and, for me, we were the better side for the first half an hour of the second half.

Javlon then scored what he thought was a good goal only for the linesman to flag for offside, but he did get his reward for hard work by finishing a great ball from midfield into the far corner.

But we can have no complaints in all though as, overall, Kingstonian were the better side on the day and ran out as 4-1 winners.

Last, but by no means least, I must also congratulate our youth team’s performance in the FA Youth Cup having beaten Staines 3-2.

They now travel to Dartford in the next round, so well done boys!

Enjoy the game,Terry

“Losing Tyrus proved to be a big blow in the end & his partnership with Javlon Campbell

is looking promising for the side”

“The East Thurrock performance showed that we’re capable & it’s performances like

that which we will need going forward”

Good afternoon and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for today’s game with the Met Police, and welcome to Jim Cooper and his side - I hope you enjoy your stay and have a safe journey home.

We’ve had two league games since my last notes - firstly, winning our first home league game and then suffering an away defeat.

I thought we really dug in and deserved the 1-0 win over East Thurrock. They had some early chances but Rob Budd made some great saves, we defended well as a team and dominated the first thirty-five minutes after the break.

It was good to see us score whilst on top, and although they threw everything at us in the last ten minutes, Buddy was again on hand and we defended really well. It was a massive relief to get those three points as we’ve often deserved better than we’ve got and it gave us some much-needed confidence.

I was really pleased with our shape in the game and we showed excellent discipline - these are both traits we will need every week if we’re going to climb the table.

We travelled to Kingstonian last Sunday without our skipper, Lewis Tozer, who was suspended with Theo Fairweather-Johnson. They’re flying so it would always be difficult, but we were confident going in off the back of a win.

There were a lot of ups and downs and we lost 4-1. Afterwards I was asked if that reflected the game and, to be honest, I answered yes and no - the first half saw us

all over the place and we went behind with really sloppy defending.

We looked really disjointed, we struggled to support Javlon Campbell up front after Tyrus Gordon-Young was stretchered off and the ball just kept coming back.

If it wasn’t for Buddy in goal we could have been six or seven down, but we kept it to 1-0 and the half-time changes really worked.

We kept the ball really well for the first half an hour of the second half and dominated - their bench were getting concerned and we did get the ball in the net, albeit it was flagged offside.

I thought we could go on and win the game if we would score, but we went to pieces with a quarter of an hour to go and found ourselves 3-0 behind after a free header and poor defending.

Javlon did pull goal back and he deserved it as he was excellent, but they got a fourth in stoppage time. I thought they deserved it on the first half performance, but not the second, and there were both positives and negatives.

Our defending was very poor at times, but we put in a great second half display against a top side in the division. We showed we can pass it and look dangerous which gives us hope, especially against sides around us.

I fielded a team full of U21s in the London Senior Cup in midweek, and I let Andy Weeks take the game. We won on penalties but there were plusses and a couple of players to look at going forwards.

We travel to Tooting & Mitcham in November in the next round, so I’ll look at a side to put out closer to the time.

On to today and, like all sides in our divisions, Met Police are a very good side but, like us, haven’t had the best of starts.

Jim has changed his team a lot this year but they’ll be confident after a 2-1 win on Saturday.

We’ve already played this season when we drew 0-0 here, but we have changed a lot since then, and I’d say for the better, so it will be a good test of where we have come.

We want a good run in the FA Trophy as all teams do - a cup run does wonders for confidence.

We’re not far away and we all still believe we can climb the league table. We’ve had a tough start playing seven of the top eight so far, so hopefully things will change soon.

I’m working as hard as I can to put things right, and I’m always out and about looking at players to strengthen the squad, watching twelve games in the last two weeks alone trying to see if anyone is around that could strengthen us.

But, as I’ve said, I am fairly happy with what I have got and the East Thurrock performance showed that we are capable. It’s performances like that which we need again today if we are going to progress to the next round.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

“Whatever happens, remember that we must continue to unconditionally encourage

& support the team at all times”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of the Met Police to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

Today sees us return to the SCT after a tough game on the road at Kingstonian to play in the FA Trophy, a competition created by the FA in 1968 to complement the existing FA Amateur Cup for semi-professional teams.

When that was abolished in 1974, the leading amateur teams joined the FA Trophy, which always hosts the final at Wembley except for the years of its recent re-construction.

In 2008, our neighbours Ebbsfleet won a great game against Torquay to win the FA Trophy and so, unlike the FA Cup where an amateur side reaching Wembley is only a dream, the FA Trophy gives those teams and players the opportunity to make it.

Let’s hold on to that dream and hope for an enjoyable run within the competition this year.

Here at the club we’ve settled into the great facilities on offer as well as continuing the hard work both on and off the field. During the last few games we’ve all seen a great improvement on the field, as all the players work as a unit.

The new players are settling in and the injury list is getting smaller, although there are concerns surrounding Tyrus Gordon-Young after his injury at Kingstonian, just as he was beginning to recapture some of his best form.

With suspensions taken, Keith has the opportunity to pick from his full squad which is something circumstances haven’t yet allowed, so let’s hope we can start to see what we are used to after being spoilt last season.

Whatever happens, remember that we must continue to encourage all the time - they know what’s required and will achieve it in their own way, but our unconditional support will assist them.

Off the field, we’re looking to find additional sponsors and partners to financially assist the club in any way to suit their budgets, and the club are holding the inaugral Sportsman’s Dinner on Halloween night - see the inside cover for full details.

We’ve has a number of new visitors to the SCT reviewing facilities and returning as supporters, which shows that the SCT can be a magnet to bring in visitors.

We really have come on a long way since those dark and gloomy days when we would have to endure a car park that mirrored a lake, so we must continue to ensure that the local community populate the development in the hope that our sparse fanbase can develop.

With all of this happening, we remain positive for the long-term security of the football club, and we look forwar to a future working within the community to increase awareness of our achievements.

I believe that the football club ought to be at the centre of the community and, in return, deserve the support of the local community - both businesses and residents.

Let’s enjoy this afternoon’s game and here’s to a cup run in the FA Trophy.

MET POLICE“The league table remains very tight

towards the bottom, and the Met will be hoping that they can go on a small run”

After last season’s most successful season ever for the Met Police, 2013/14 has proven to be a little bit of an anti-climax so far as the Met struggle to get going in the league.

A whole host of summer arrivals meant that Jimmy Cooper had effectively rebuilt his side, and they’re still looking to gel as the season reaches the quarter-stage mark.

Last year saw the Met finish in sixth place in the Ryman Premier League, only missing out on a play-off spot on goal difference as well as enjoying a run to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup where the side lost out 2-1 to League One Crawley.

But a wobbly run of nine league games with five defeats and only one victory saw Cooper’s side slip down towards the bottom four before last weekend’s

2-1 victory over Leiston provided a small buffer.

The league table remains very tight towards the bottom, and the Met will be hoping that the victory can help them to go on a small run towards mid-table comfort.

Both sides will be hoping for a cup run this afternoon having been knocked out of the FA Cup, the Met bowing out in a replay to Chalfont St Peter thanks to a late strike.

The side have been boosted in recent weeks by the return of Ty Smith, though, with the former favourite departing in the summer for Canvey Island.

“We kept in touch after he left,” Cooper admitted. “I always thought the travelling might be too much, and we’re more than happy to have him.”

The Mead v Met Police 09

On 6th July 1829, Sir Robert Peel formed the Metropolitan Police, the first organised Police Force in the world, with an office overlooking the Thames at Whitehall known as Scotland Yard, a name that has become famous throughout the world, and also became synonymous with the Metropolitan Police.

Ninety years later, in 1919, the Metropolitan Police Football Club was formed, playing friendly matches until joining the Spartan League in 1928. Apart from the war years (1939-45), the club remained in that competition until 1960. During that time the Blues were League Champions eight times, runners-up once and League Cup winners once. In 1960 the Blues joined the Metropolitan League, winning the League Cup in 1969.

In 1971 the Blues were accepted into the Southern League and played in Division South until 1977, under Team Manager Vic Rouse, the former Wales and Crystal Palace goalkeeper.

In 1977, the Blues moved to the Isthmian League, becoming one of the founder members of the restructured Division Two. A successful first season (1977/78) resulted in the club finishing runners-up to Epsom & Ewell and being promoted to Division One.

As a result of finishing third from the bottom in 1984/5, the Blues were relegated to Division Two (South). Ironically, in that season the Blues enjoyed their best run in the FA Cup, reaching the First Round Proper.

On returning to Division Two (South) the Blues finished 7th in both 1985/6 and 1986/7. During 1987/88 the Blues led the Division Two (South) table in January by seven points but they were overhauled by Chalfont St Peter, who won their last two games of season and became champions by just one point. The Blues were runners-up by virtue of a one-goal difference over Dorking. It was a nail-biting finish to a season in which the Blues lost just two league matches, both away.

The next two seasons saw the club finish

in mid-table in Division One but in 1990/1 the club finished second from bottom and were relegated into the newly formed Division Two of the restructured Diadora (Isthmian) League.

The club remained in Division Two for several years, always finishing in the top half but just outside the promotion positions. In 1993/4 the Blues again reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, losing 2-0 to Crawley Town.

Season 1994/5 saw the club celebrate its 75th Anniversary with a game against the Army and the opening of a new grandstand at Imber Court. The Blues finished in 5th position in Division Two and ended the season with a thrilling victory in the Carlsberg Trophy, defeating Collier Row in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

During the next few seasons the club continued to finish in the top half of Division Two and in 1999/2000 reached the Fifth Round of the FA Vase (last 8), losing to the eventual winners Deal Town.

In 2002/3 the Ryman League was restructured and the Blues were placed in Division One South. That season the club finished second from bottom and faced the prospect of relegation, whilst another poor season in 2003/4 saw the side finish just above the relegation places.

Following the FA restructuring of the non-league pyramid, in 2004/5 the club moved to the Ryman League Division One.

In their first full season in charge, the new management team of Jim Cooper, assisted by Gavin MacPherson and John Nicholson, had an immediate impact and the Met finished 5th in the Division One, thus qualifying for the play-offs where the side lost out to Bromley on penalties.

It was play-off heartbreak again a season later as Dover ran out victors against the Met, before further F. A. restructuring resulted in a Ryman League Division 1 North and Division 1 South in 2006/7 and the club finished in sixth position in the Division 1 South. However, the club reached the final of the Surrey Senior

Cup for the first time since 1933 but was beaten 4-1 after extra time.

In 2007/8 the Blues finished 4th in the Ryman League Division 1 South but, for the third time in four years, was beaten in the play-off semi final, this time 2-0 by Cray Wanderers.

The club again finished in the season after and, again, lost out to Cray with a 1-0 defeat in the play-off final.

League disappointment in 2009/10 was offset by winning the London Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history, beating AFC Wimbledon in an exciting final, 4-3 on penalties.

The 2010/11 season proved to be the most exciting in the club’s history, culminating in the club winning the Ryman League Division 1 South Championship by the narrow margin of one goal.

Bognor Regis Town had a two-point advantage during the latter stages of the season and that was the situation when the clubs lined up for the final match.

Bognor were held to an unexpected draw by Chatham Town and with the Met managing to scramble a 1-0 win against Merstham, it was enough to win the title with a goal difference of 61 against Bognor’s 60.

So, for the first time in the club’s history it competed in the Ryman League Premier Division during the 2011/12 Season. The club got off to a flying start and at Christmas found themselves in 4th position but unfortunately fell away in the second half of the season and finished in 12th position.

Last year proved to be the most successful in the club’s history, finishing in 6th position in the Ryman League Premier Division, missing out on a play-off place on goal difference (9 goals).

The club had a good run in the FA Cup, reaching the First Round Proper, before eventually losing 2-1 to Crawley Town from League One.

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR“We’re all positive & we all know that we’re

good enough to play at this standard of football if we can keep believing”

THE PHYSIO

Hard work, playing through the pain barrier and putting your body on the line are the best ways to describe our victory against East Thurrock the other week.

I felt so proud of the positive and disciplined way that we played, and we showed what can be achieved when we work hard. This win must now be used as a platform to progress as a group and start climbing up the league table.

I’d like to welcome my mate Northy to the club as a goalkeeping coach - he is a top goalkeeper and a top bloke, so it will be good to have him around

the place.

Last Saturday we were free for once and the Gaffer went on a spying mission before Kingstonian away on the Sunday. Some games you have a good feeling about and, strangely, this was one of them. All of our preparation was good, there was good banter in the changing room and, all-round, it was positive.

Then, after just a few minutes, Tyrus takes a clump and ends up in a heap on the floor! He was in a lot of pain but with my sidekick Carly and the good people at Kingstonian we had him settled and stretchered off. Hospital

told us it was very bad bruising and swelling and it becomes the waiting game with him now.

Yes, we lost the game, but I think we played some of the best football I’ve seen all season. As before, it was individual mistakes that proved costly but I know that the boys want to put it behind them with a shift this afternoon.

We’re all positive and we all know that we are good enough to earn the right to play at this standard of football, so we just have to keep believing.

We’ve all been there.

Your parents are away for the week, the house is free and your pals are applying the pressure to crack open the doors and put on a party to be proud of.

Suddenly you’re the most popular kid in town.

The drinks are flowing and all of a sudden your attention is diverted from picking up wine-soaked shards of glass from behind the TV unit.

Someone is acting up, whilst swigging down your dad’s Glenfiddich. And people are starting to get annoyed.

Then it hits you. ‘Hold on, I have absolutely no idea who that is’.

Those that witnessed the horrendous acts of violence that ruined last weekend’s FA Cup tie between Atherstone Town and Barrow know all about uninvited and unwelcome guests.

Flags burned, punches thrown, women and children screaming with visiting players physically attacked.

It stained the day. But it mustn’t taint people’s view of a club.

Playing to double figure crowds at best

in the Midland Football Combination, this was not your usual Step 5 match.

The best part of a thousand people turned up, around nine times their average. It took deep planning from the club’s small committee.

There was a sense of excitement, too. Attracting new sponsors, and new fans that could be lured back they like what they saw.

Sadly, some knuckleheads came along for the ride too.

The sensible money would be on this group never having been to the Adders’ Sheepy Road before. A similar tale whenever a smaller club makes the headlines for the wrong reason.

It’s a problem we’ve seen so many

times before. Idiots like attaching themselves to big days, taking the opportunity to cause chaos and run a mock in a competition where they know they can get people talking about them.

In short, attention seeking at its finest.

Atherstone chairman Robert Weale was close to tears in the aftermath, fearing the mark these mindless troublemakers will leave on his precious club and its reputation. Mud, as they say, sticks.

We can do him and all that have been on the wrong end of such hooliganism a service by remembering that they are victims, too.

Don’t judge a club by the pondlife that occasionally inhabit it.

18 The Mead v Met Police

Peter Deadman has been a part of Thamesmead Town for two decades now having joined the club in 1993, and subsequently he has seen all of the changes that the Mead have gone through.

Nowadays Peter is one of the senior coaches that work alongside Keith McMahon and, following a frustrating start to life in the Ryman Premier League, he will be scratching his head looking for the solution to help put things right.

“There’s still a long way to go,” he told the matchday programme. “We’re only a third of the way into the season and it’s been a big transition for us. But I do think we can compete with most of the division which is where we can get our points from.”

The Mead have already faced seven of the top eight teams so far in the division, but a recent 1-0 win over East Thurrock has brought about new-found confidence amongst the camp.

He continued: “We probably haven’t competed enough so far, but we did that against East Thurrock - we did the simple things well which is important.”

Whilst this season has been memorable on the pitch as the club’s maiden campaign in the Ryman Premier League, it is also notable off it for the new facilities here at the SCT.

Having arrived at Bayliss Avenue twenty years ago, Peter admits that he wouldn’t have envisaged this.

“I never even in my wildest dreams thought on day one we would have facilities like this,” herevealed. “There was no inclination that things would change so much.

“The old club house was adequate for what we needed and, along with a lot of the facilities, it was probably better than what a lot of the other Kent League clubs had at the time.

“But in footballing terms it is amazing how far we have come. We were a top half Kent League team without any real chance of promotion - you could win it three years running and not be considered!

“You can’t put what we have now into words really, it’s fantastic. There are still one or two teething problems, but it makes me proud

to have stayed with the club. I just wish I was still out there playing!”

The unprecedented success of recent years has coincided with the arrival of Keith McMahon and his involvement throughout the club.

Keith is driven to succeed with the Mead and is always out and about looking for the next best idea to help progress things on and off the pitch.

And Peter strongly agrees that Keith is one of the drivers of success here at the SCT: “Undoubtedly, when you look back, Keith has been the catalyst for the changes.

“Terry Hill was fantastic and Micky Watts before him - the boss when I first played - there has been general progression since Paul Blades took over around the millenium.

“Keith really must take a lot of credit for how far the club has come on in recent years though.”

With progression up the ladder also comes a progression in the standard of opposition, and moving from the Kent League to the Ryman Premier League is a big step for any club.

However, whilst the Mead have progressed onwards and upwards, so have many of the old Kent League foes as non-league football in general continues to reshape itself.

Reflecting on how those changes have come about, Peter said: “You’ve only got to look where a lot of the clubs who were the strong clubs in the Kent League in those days are playing now and most of them, if not all, are in the Ryman League.

“Folkestone, Chatham, Herne Bay, Faversham, Ramsgate - you could go on and, even then, one of the biggest clubs, Sheppey United, actually folded.

“So the Kent League has lost a lot of its strength, but its not just the Kent League its happened all over the country as the structure of non-league football has changed.”

Whilst non-league football has been changing, the Mead have evolved with it and not only the facilities but also the structure of the club off the field as more professionalism creeps in at all levels of the

game.

“The club is now much more professionally run,” he stated. “But at this level it has to be, you cant have the structure in place that you have as a Kent League club if you’re going up two or three rungs in the pyramid.

“That means you were either way ahead of where you should have been three rungs down or you’re way behind where you should be today. You have to progress and we have progressed - we’ve put the structure in place with Paul Bowden-Brown coming in to help Keith a lot.

“They’ve had their helpers behind the scenes and they’ve all done an awful lot of work that noone really wants to do.”

Whilst life has been testing for Keith and the side on the pitch in the league this season, the cup competitions can provide some respite to focus on something else and build some confidence.

The side bowed out of the FA Cup with nine men in recent weeks, but today sees the side given another competition to try their hand in with the FA Trophy, and Peter insisted the team were looking for a cup run.

“Of course we would have liked to go further in the FA Cup as the financial incentives are massive for clubs at our level, but that’s gone now.

“So we look at the next cup which is the FA Trophy and it would be nice to go in a few rounds and draw a Conference club at home for a big gate.

“It’s not just for the money as you want the home draw and you know that, on your day if you catch them out then we can beat anyone - who knows what might happen?”

Whilst the Mead continue to work on results on the pitch and climbing their way up the league table, the club also continue to look at how they can bolster gates too.

Peter suggested that the club were already doing their best to try and draw crowds in: “I don’t know the reasons, perhaps it’s just the social make up of the area.

“We just have to keep doing what we are with the community schemes and see what happens - fingers crossed that they work and we’ll see some new faces.”

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Billericay Town maintained their recent improved form in the Ryman Premier by beating ten-man Enfield Town 2-1 at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium on Saturday.

A depleted fixture list due to the FA Cup saw only four league games, but the Blues managed to move into eighth place as a result of the victory.

Enfield started well and took a 20th minute lead when Mark Kirby fired past visiting ̀ keeper Billy Lumley following a long through ball.

The turning point in the match came in the 65th minute when Enfield’s Joe Stevens was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Isaac Layne in the box and Glenn Poole converted the resultant spot-kick.

It looked as though it was going to be a point apiece until six minutes from time when Junior Luke grabbed `Ricay`s headed winner.

Recent signing Jake Reed made himself an instant crowd favourite at Lowestoft Town after his four-goal salvo helped down lowly Carshalton Athletic at Crown Meadow.

Reed, 22, who was released by League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge

recently, notched all his goals in the opening 25 minutes.

Lee Smith also found the net a minute before the break as the Trawlerboys went into the break 5-0 up.

The second period proved to be something of an anti-climax, although the home side continued to dominate without finding the net again.

Bury Town, fresh from a 4-0 drubbing of Lowestoft Town in a Suffolk Senior Cup tie in midweek, continued their good form with a 2-1 success at Hartsdown Park against Margate.

The visitors were late getting to the ground because of traffic, but Shane Tolley showed there was little bus fatigue as he gave the Blues the lead almost straight from the kick-off.

Margate gradually recovered and equalised in the 10th minute through Jack Sammoutis.

But the winner for Bury came after 67 minutes when Patrick Jordan latched on to a loose ball in the box to fire past player boss Craig Holloway.

Metropolitan Police manager Jim Cooper must have been relieved to hear the final whistle blow as his side

once again failed to convert chances into goals throughout their game at Imber Court against Leiston, but managed to edge it 2-1.

New signing Tyrone Pink had an immediate impact after just four minutes when he cut inside the full-back and clipped a great cross to the far post where it was powerfully met by Ryan James with an unstoppable header to put the Met ahead.

The key moment in the game came when Danny Cunningham – on as an early seventh minute substitute - picked up his second yellow card for a rash challenge on Howard Newton taking Leiston down to ten-men after just 23 minutes.

But it was the Suffolk side who scored the next goal, Leon Ottley-Gooch equalising with seven minutes of the first half to go.

And it looked as though a well-organised Leiston side were going to hang on for a point until five minutes from time when much-travelled striker Allan Tait popped up with the winner, having come off the bench on the hour-mark.

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

Who’d be a goalkeeper?

In last season Play Off win, keeper Rob Budd was the hero in the penalty shoot triumph at Maldon, but Buddy himself will admit that this season by his own high standards, he’s been some way off those heroics.

That was though until East Thurrock United visited Sporting Club Thamesmead for the first time, and left beaten courtesy of Tyrus Gordon-Young’s tap in on the hour, and a Budd Supershow.

Tyrus deserved the goal for a hard working 90 minutes alongside new strike partner Javlon Campbell, but the Mead stopper took the plaudits for a truly stunning display with a series of magnificent saves that repaid the gaffer’s faith in him.

For Keith himself, the grin on his face whilst holding his post match drink simply said it all and wrote a thousand words as his side won their first home League game of the season...

An intriguing game held the crowd enthralled for the 90 minutes - it was just a shame that there weren’t more there to enjoy it! But those who were

saw Buddy make an incredible block after only five minutes.

After a great run from full back Ryan Sammons, the ball fell to Leon McKenzie who was almost turning to salute the goal from six yards as the Thamesmead keeper somehow made the ground across his goal to palm the strikers shot behind - it left McKenzie holding his head in disbelief!

Yet incredibly, Thamesmead had an even better chance sixty seconds later as a long ball forward caused absolute chaos down the left and as United keeper Sam Mott and Sammons got in a terrible mess and Javlon Campbell looked as though he was going to benefit, but after surviving the challenge on the edge of the box, Jav couldn’t keep his feet and shot wide with the goal almost at his mercy.

THE MEAD CAN FINALLY CELEBRATE AT THE SCT

Page 23: Thamesmead Town v Metropolitan Police (FAT)

23The Mead v Met Police

After a period of midfield battles all over the pitch - the one between Karl Beckford and United’s former Gillingham man Stuart Thurgood undoubtedly the pick - it was the visitors who next threatened as David Bryant raced clear only for Buddy to come hurtling out of goal the hack clear a good ten yards outside of this box.

Rob then excelled in the more conventional way with a full length finger save to deny Sammons low drive with the finger tips of his left hand!

The second half began as evenly as the first half had been - first Thurgood’s ball into the box saw McKenzie flick out a boot as the ball went just over the Thamesmead bar whilst at the other end, Mott made a fine block with his legs to deny Olalekan Bankole at the back post following Karl’s deep free kick.

The game’s only goal arrived just before the hour.

Karl’s corner saw Tyrus beat Mott to the ball, and whilst the keeper was appealing for a foul, it was who reacted quickest as the ball bounced off of the crossbar to side foot home from a yard out.

Incredibly it was the first league game at SCT that had seen the Mead go in front!

And it was a lead that they were not to lose thanks to a combination of inspired goalkeeping and sensational defending in particular from skipper Lewis Tozer and his central defensive partner Donovan.

As the home side were pushed further and further back, East Thurrock threw more and more forward and Bryant went close again when again he sprinted clear.

This time he was to be denied by a

combination of full back Jay Porter and the inspired keeper, and just to prove that it wasn’t going to be the Essex clubs day, Buddy arguably saved his

best until last.

A shot was blocked on the edge of

the box, but the rebound fell to substitute Mitchell Gilby who’s flicked

header seemed destined for the

net before the Thamesmead stopper

arched his back to show fantastic reactions to tip the ball

over.

It really was a Budd super show, and as a result of these three points, the Mead are now within touching distance of those immediately above them, and could well be what we need to finally kick start our debut their Ryman Premier season.

THE YOUTH TEAM

“IT REALLY WAS A STUNNING FIRST HALF

PERFORMANCE FROM THE MEAD

WHO NETTED SEVEN GOAL

AGAINST CRAY WANDERERS”

THE YOUTH TEAM:

THEY ALSOPLAY FOR US

With the season now well underway at all levels of the game, it has been a stunning start to the campaign for the Mead’s U16s side who capped off their fine start with a 7-3 win over Cray Wanderers.

With six games gone, it was a sixth straight win to notch up the side’s eighteenth point of the season thanks to an excellent first half performance. It really was a stunning first half performance from the U16s who netted seven goals against a Cray Wanderers side who could not cope with the Mead’s wide men or passing of the ball. The home side were ahead early on when James Sutherland crossed for Jack Keaveney to net, whilst it was 2-0 shortly afterwards when George Della Valle broke into the box and his cut back was struck home by Alan Stevenson.

The Mead were getting down both wings and swinging crosses in at will as the Cray defence struggled to cope with the home

side’s attacking intent, and it proved costly for Wanderers as, before the half hour mark had been reached, it became 3-0. Cicero Gleadall burst down the wing and crossed for Sutherland to score the third, before three became four approaching half-time as Sutherland bagged a brace as he tucked home a cross by Jack Keaveney. Cray did create some very good chances, but home keeper Scott Harris was in great form - making one great double save, before the visitors pulled a goal back just before half time when a free kick was headed home.

But there was still time for our boys to make it 5-1 at the break, as Gleadhall delivered another telling cross which Sutherland met to complete a first half hat-trick and send the Mead to the half time huddle well in charge. The second half was always likely to be a bit of an anti-climax after six first half goals for the spectators.

Whilst the Mead kept probing, it took a little while for the sixth goal to come as Della Valle

created the opportunity for Keaveney to net his second and the Mead’s sixth. Cray pulled a goal back almost immediately when a low shot found the net, but the Mead made it 7-2 shortly afterwards when it was Keaveney’s turn to complete his hat trick from a pass by Jake Try.

With the home side cruising for the last quarter of the game, it allowed the battered visitors grab another goal back to put a unfair gloss on the scoreline as the gulf between the two teams was clear. The U16s have now won six out of six in the league so far this season, and with second placed Welling United dropping points on Sunday, its a two-point lead at this early stage.

Already it looks as though the games with Welling could prove crucial. Mead XI: Harris, Try, McGarrigle, Bradford, Nielson, Vose, Sutherland, Stevenson, Della Valle, Gleadall, KeaveneySubs: Atilola, Hyland, Orisatoki, Cella, Berry.

IN OPPOSITION

COMMERCIALCORNER

Good afternoon everyone as we bid a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of the Met Police to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the second time this season following our 0-0 draw here back in August.

This time, as we all know, there’s no league points up for grabs but, instead, much needed funding for both sides, and more importantly a place in the velvet bag for Monday’s Second Qualifying Round draw. Also a note that if today’s games finishes as a draw, the replay will be at Imber Court on Tuesday night at 7.45pm. Time is running out to book your place at our first Sportsman’s Evening, which is now looming ever larger on the horizon! On Thursday 31st October we welcome former Premiership referee Dermot Gallagher and comedian, Adger Brown, to the SCT - full details can be found on the inside front cover of today’s programme. If you want to come then please contact us at [email protected] or by calling 07845 751319. Do you own a local company or are associated with one and would like to become part of our family here at the SCT? Simply get in touch with me on a matchday or by the contact details listed elsewhere on the page. At our next Saturday home game on November 9th, we’re holding a Chairman’s Day as we hopefully raise money for the nation’s favourite yellow teddy bear - yes, its Pudsey Bear time again! So please help us to help the 2013 BBC Children In Need appeal with a couple of very special games that we’ve got planned. Finally from me today, a couple of reminders of rearranged games. Firstly, our next Ryman Premier League game here is now against Bognor Regis on Tuesday November 5th, whilst our game scheduled for next Saturday against Hampton & Richmond has been postponed due to the Surrey side’s continued involvement in the FA Cup. The game will now be played here at the SCT on Tuesday November 19th at 7.45pm.

We don’t, however, have a weekend off next week as we have rearranged our trip to Hendon that was due to be played on December 21st - it has instead been brought forward to next weekend with a 3pm kick-off at Earlsmead. Cheers,Greenie

NEXT HERE:

BOGNOR REGISThe Mead are next in action here at the SCT in two and a half weeks’ time, as Jamie Howell brings his in-form Bognor Regis side to Bayliss Avenue.

The Rocks finished fourteenth in the division last season, but will be hoping their stamina doesn’t let them down this time around after a cracking start to the season.

Having started a little slowly, their league form has really stood out in recent weeks and they have picked up maximum points from their previous six Ryman League fixtures.

After just one point from the first four games, the Rocks have picked up twenty-two points out of a possible twenty-four since and will provide formidable opponents for the Mead on November 5th.

Rocks boss Howell picked up the Manager of the Month award for September, unsurprisingly, and the side had a rest last weekend due to AFC

Hornchurch’s continued involvement in the FA Cup.

However, the weekend off didn’t mean a rest for the side, with Howell using the time to try and maintain the stunning form the side has carried into October.

“We’re treating this period as a mini pre-season,” explained Rocks coach Darin Killpartrick to the Bognor Observer.

“We are training as often as we would be if we were playing, and we will get together for a session on Saturday - we’ll be doing a lot of fitness work.

“Our hard work is paying off at the moment but we won’t ease off and hopefully we will keep the run going.”

Bognor are at home to Thurrock this afternoon in their FA Trophy First Qualifying Round game.
