FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead this afternoon as we welcome Carshalton Athletic for what is set to be a cracking fixture.

Both sides are already fighting for their lives down at the wrong end of the Ryman Premier League table and, buoyed by last weekend’s 2-1 win at Harrow, fingers crossed that Keith and the side can put on another show this afternoon as the fight for survival starts to get serious.

The side were finally able to complete the League Cup fixture at Ware on Tuesday night at the third time of asking, and it means that the home game with Hampton & Richmond has again been pushed back, now to be played here on this Tuesday night coming.

Here’s to three more points and we’ll see you back here again on Tuesday.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good afternoon everyone and, firstly, let me welcome the players and officials of Carshalton Athletic to our new home here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

A big thank you to everyone who attended last week’s game against AFC Hornchurch and perfectly observed the silence for Remembrance Sunday.

Well, what a week it’s been with games being postponed and rearranged!

Our league game against Hampton & Richmond on Tuesday night had to be rearranged for seven days later because our League Cup fixture away to Ware had to take priority.

Last Saturday saw us travel to Harrow Borough, heading into the game off the back of two defeats and questionable refereeing decisions in both.

Harrow were in fine form and playing very well, illustrated by their victory over a strong AFC Hornchurch side in their previous outing before taking us on.

Harrow had started the game like a house on fire, peppering shots at our goal.

Lady luck was with us, though (it’s

about time she turned up!), as they hit the post twice before Buddy also had to tip one onto the bar with a fine save.

After about ten minutes (which seemed like hours!) we settled down and started to play some good football of our own, and we even took the lead.

Jack Hopkins made a great run down the right and played the ball in to Mikel Suarez, who turned to fire a shot into the bottom corner.

I must say that Mikel was excellent in holding the ball up and his overall play was very good, particularly bearing in mind that he hasn’t played a lot of football and is still regaining his fitness during this loan spell.

We finished the half 1-0 up, and the second half was just as fiery with tackles flying in from both sides, but the scores were soon level when they scored what was, in all fairness, a great strike from a free kick.

All I seem to be doing in recent weeks is talking about referees but, again, we had a penalty awarded against us after one of their players went down very easily, shall we say, with the game fairly even at this point and the score 1-1.

After consulting his linesman, who was closer to the incident, and being

told by said linesman that the player had dived by leaving a trailing leg, the referee still awarded a penalty.

Thankfully, Buddy saved the resulting penalty and justice was served without us having to suffer, but Keith spoke with the referee after the game and, to be fair to him, he did admit that he might have made a mistake.

I felt we wanted it more than Harrow did though, and with ten minutes to go we got a deserved winner.

Having pressed them into conceding a corner, a ball to the far post was met with a bullet header from Junior Baker which flew in off Jack Hopkins.

I have been saying recently that we are starting to play well without getting the results and the new players are beginning to settle in.

We also appear to have increased our workrate and, if we can continue to do that and fight for one another, I remain confident that we will move up the table.

Enjoy the game,Terry

“We’ve started to play well, the new players have settled in & we seem to be working harder - I’m sure we’ll climb the table”

FROM THE DUGOUT:

KEITHMcMAHON

“The win was a massive lift & I was so proud of the lads - it gave us a real belief

that we can climb the league table”

Good afternoon and welcome back for today’s game against Carshalton Athletic, and welcome to the management and players - I hope you enjoy your short stay here and I hope you have a safe journey home afterwards.

Since my last notes it has been a tough, but good, couple of weeks. Things are starting to take shape on the pitch and we’ve taken plenty of positives from them.

We lost 2-1 here to AFC Hornchurch in our last home game, and it was gutting once again to lose with the last kick of the game despite such an excellent working performance.

I thought we deserved a point; our shape and workrate was similar to the Bognor game and we responded brilliantly to going a goal behind. We replied with a great passing move that I reckon could be up there with team goal of the season, before Tyrus almost won it in the last five minutes.

Such is our luck, though, that they went up the other end and scored an injury time winner of their own. The lads were gutted but, as I told them, if we show that workrate then things will change.

We finally got what we deserved last Saturday with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Harrow, who had been on a good run. This showed in the opening fifteen minutes when we could have fallen a couple behind.

I was pleased that we were able to weather the storm though, and we soon regrouped as we had done in previous weeks. Mikel Suarez then put us a goal in front and it became an open game, with both sides looking dangerous on the break.

We defended really well as a unit with good shape, and I knew we could get the win we needed if we kept going. It’s true that when you’re at the bottom things go against you, and that continued in the second half.

I knew we would have to adapt to the quality of this league when we were promoted, but I wasn’t prepared for the level of diving we seem to be witnessing. We were again the victims of another blatant dive, but credit to the referee for admitting the mistake afterwards.

Thankfully, Buddy saved this penalty and we struck both the post and bar shortly afterwards to almost double our advantage. We looked comfortable but, with ten minutes to go, they scored a free kick from the edge of the box.

At the beginning of the season we would have folded, but we now have some steel and belief so, rather than sitting on a draw, we attacked and Jack Hopkins nodded home in the final minutes for all three points.

It was a massive lift and I was so proud of the lads - we’ve worked so hard recently and really deserved it. It also gives us the belief that we can put together a run to

climb the table, and it alleviates a little bit of pressure, too.

I made a lot of changes on Tuesday night as we travelled to Ware in the League Cup. I wanted to give some players the chance to make an impression, but we lost 5-3 and didn’t play particularly well. The league is our priority, but I was disappointed with the lads who came in - I didn’t think they really did themselves justice.

One massive plus was that young academy player Adem Ramadan came on for his debut, scored and played really well. He put a lot of others to shame and looks like a real prospect for the future.

We will look after him though as he plays a lot of football at the moment. He will need to be brought on gradually but, when he’s ready, I think he’ll be very good.

On to today and, for us, this is a really big game. Carshalton are one of the teams we’re fighting with to avoid relegation, so I guess it could be a six-pointer. No one is relegated before Christmas, but a win would put us in a good position to continue our progression.

It’ll be very tough with both sides fighting for their lives, but if we play as we have done recently I’m sure we can get a positive result.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

“I’ve said all season to keep the faith and a team doesn’t become bad overnight - we

deserved those points for all the hard work”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Carshalton Athletic to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

Well, we’re back here once again after last weekend’s exciting trip to Harrow where, after a great game, the side picked up three valuable points.

I’ve said all season to keep the faith as, for me, you don’t become a bad team overnight. They all deserved those points after all of their hard work - Keith puts in long hours over the season and has ensured we bring in the right calibre of players but, as always, these things take time.

It seems as though things are starting to happen for us on the pitch though, so well done to the boys and let’s hope we can keep it up this afternoon - we will all support you from the terraces.

Carshalton are placed just below us and, having experienced a hard, tight game whenever I’ve met them before, I expect nothing less today. Here’s to an enjoyable game and, hopefully, the Mead can finish with another three points.

On Wednesday afternoon, Keith and I met with the SCT management and the Trust, with the main topic being to

discuss the operational issues since we moved in. It was a very constructive meeting where we all aired our concerns, and all were listened to so hopefully anything that requires action will be resolved before long.

I must say a big thank you to Simon and his team here at the SCT for what they have achieved since the summer’s opening. It can only get better and, remember, the facilities are for hire - say you’re a member of the football club and you’ll be surprised at what can be offered to you. We benefit from your usage too, so please assist us.

Another internal concern that Keith and I had strong feelings on was that we wanted to ensure there is always a warm feeling to supporters and visitors in the Mead Bar Lounge on a

matchday - something to confirm our identity and for supporters to relax before, during and after the match.

At this time, we feel that the area lacks our club identity and remains very much a blank canvas - the areas can seem a bit cold, bland and uninviting currently but the work required will be nothing major. Hopefully this can change in the coming weeks and you can all enjoy our hospitality within a congenial area.

Now let’s settle down and enjoy the match - whoever you support, remember your support from the terraces acts like the twelfth man to the team so keep the vocal support going.

CARSHALTON“This afternoon is sure to be an entertaining encounter & it is the games like this where

the Mead’s fate will be determined this year”

It is yet another big game for the Mead this afternoon in the quest for survival, as they welcome bottom side Carshalton Athletic to Sporting Club Thamesmead.

With both sides battling for much-needed points, it is sure to be an entertaining encounter this afternoon, and it is in the games like this where the Mead’s fate this season will be determined.

It has been a difficult campaign for the Robins so far, with just two victories from their seventeen league games and, like the Mead, they will be eyeing up today’s fixture as an opportunity to get some points on board.

The Robins arrive at the SCT this afternoon without a league win in eight games since they dispatched of

Billericay in September, and Ian Hazel’s side also bowed out of the FA Trophy last weekend, losing 2-1 at home to Whitstable.

And, speaking to the local press, Hazel admitted that his side were lacklustre in defeat, with complacency setting in as the Robins threw away a 1-0 lead heading into the final quarter of an hour.

“My players got more comfortable with our 1-0 lead as the clock ticked down,” he admitted.

Hazel also explained how his side needed to start sharing the goals around a little more, saying: “We’ve relied on Tommy Bradford for goals so far this season so the likes of Aikhionbare, Addai and Woodley, need to start chipping in more.”

Carshalton Athletic traces its roots to two separate teams playing in the area of Wrythe Green in Carshalton in the early twentieth century.

Carshalton St Andrews was formed in 1897 by the vicar of St Andrews, Revd. C W Cleaver, and the club began playing in the Surrey County Herald League.

In 1902 it was promoted into the Southern Suburban League Division Two West, but it agreed to fold and amalgamate with Mill Lane Mission in 1906.

Mill Lane Mission registered the name change with the Surrey FA and played its first ever match as Carshalton Athletic on 7 September 1907 at home on the Wrythe Green recreation ground in a friendly against Westbrook (Thornton Heath).

The original club colours were red jerseys and white shorts and its nickname is the Robins.

Following the reformation of the club in March 1919, after the First World War, Carshalton moved into its still current home at Colston Avenue.

The ground was built as a memorial to those club members that lost their lives in the war.

Carshalton has most recently spent its time in the Isthmian Premier League, along with a brief unsuccessful spell in the Conference South in 2004/05.

During the first decade of the new millennium the club has endured many ups and downs.

In 2007/08 the club avoided

relegation on the last game of the season when other extraordinary League results kept it up.

Then, the following year, the Robins just missed promotion to the Conference South, losing in the play-off final against Staines Town.

The club ran into financial trouble by the end of 2008 when it was bought by local businessman Paul Dipre and, over the past five years, it has transformed.

It is now one of the biggest community-based clubs in the south of England boasting two senior male teams, seven ladies/girls teams, 35 youth/junior teams, two male and one female academy teams and two u18 teams.

The club also has 2,000 members, a thriving social side and Carshalton’s efforts have been recognised by the highest football authorities.

The club won the ‘Surrey FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year Award’, the ‘South-East FA Regional Charter Standard

Community Club of the Year Award’ and then the ultimate accolade of ‘FA National Charter Standard Community Club of the Year’ all in 2012.

In May 2013 it was announced the club had won the silver medal at the UEFA ‘Best Grassroots Club’ awards.

On the playing field, Carshalton progressed to the third round proper of the FA Trophy in 2011/12, recording convincing victories over higher league teams along the way: a 5-0 thrashing of Bishops Stortford and a tremendous 3-1 home win against Lincoln City saw the Robins eventually succumb in Wales against Newport County.

Carshalton were due to be relegated at the end of the 2012/13 season when it finished one point off safety despite winning six of their last eight games.

Essex side Thurrock however were deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player during the season, thus allowing the Robins to leapfrog them back into the Premier division.

A late surge by visiting Whitstable eventually condemned Carshalton to defeat in a cup game which swung from end-to-end throughout, writes James Barrett. The Robins looked comfortable at 1-0 up with 20 minutes to go but Town grabbed two goals to book their passage to the first round proper for the first time in their history. Both sides started brightly and Lewis Taylor made a 40 yard burst forward on two minutes before feeding Alex Addai on the left. The winger managed to get in a low cross but, as Tommy Bradford and Kingsley Aikhionbare contested it, the referee blew up for an infringement. The Carshalton keeper was called into action on six minutes as John Guest turned in the box and fired a shot which Snedker blocked with an outstretched leg. The visitors were enjoying the opening 10 minutes and forced several more corners which kept the Robins on their toes defensively, and Snedker claimed an angled Ashley Baverstock shot low at his near post. Snedker threw out the ball to an unmarked Sean O’Toole on 20 minutes and he travelled forward before passing it into Aikhionbare. Taylor made an unchecked run into the visitors’ box but Joe Kane just managed to take enough power off O’Toole’s cross and the chance disappeared. Woodley chased back to prevent Town building an attack just inside the

Robins half and, after a one-two with Bradford, he was closing in on goal. The angle favoured a left footed shot across goal but the forward ended up toe poking the ball at the near post and Watkins got a foot to it. Both sides began trading attacks but it was Carshalton that took the lead on 32 minutes. Cox headed a weak clearance on a free kick into the Town box which dropped to MORAES and the defender coolly slotted home from 15 yards for his second goal in a week. Aikionbare was involved in two moves shortly after; the first when he sprung the Town offside trap down the right and travelled into their box, but his pull back for Bradford was snuffed out by a recovering defender. Then, on 38 minutes, he performed a well-executed overhead kick on a Bobby Price cross but the ball was always moving off target. The second-half began fairly quietly but the best chance of the opening exchanges saw Quincy Rowe almost connect with a corner in front of Watkins on 53 minutes. Thompson flashed a shot not far wide three minutes later before Carshalton broke from a Town corner with Addai who eventually picked out Bradford with a pinpoint cross-field ball on 57 minutes. Carshalton’s top scorer cut inside his marker but put a curling effort just wide of the far post. The visitors began to exert more pressure on the Carshalton backline and Snedker did well to claim a wicked cross looking for Town sub Laurence

Harvey on 71 minutes. The equaliser came four minutes later as Scott Heard pumped a free kick into the home box and GUEST managed to stab it home at the back post as the Carshalton players failed to react. Town were now in the ascendency and a well-worked move carved Carshalton open on 84 minutes to deliver the winning goal. MacKenzie did well on the edge of the Robins box to retain possession and shift the ball out wide on the right. A low cross found THOMPSON unmarked in front of goal and the striker side footed home to the delight of the visiting fans.

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR“Things have been quiet behind the Green Door recently & it was great for Ash Probets

to make the bench again last weekend”

THE PHYSIO

Firstly, I’ll start with an apology that if the column isn’t up to usual incredible standard tonight it’s because my ghost writer let me down!

I’ve had a ridiculously busy week with the day job on top of Tuesday’s League Cup trip half way round the M25.

At least we got there though after power cuts and a waterlogged pitch had led to it being postponed the previous two weeks.

It was still frustrating though having to brave London’s car park for a competition where the opening rounds are usually as local as possible... someone got the Sat Nav wrong!

Things have been quiet behind the Green Door heading into Tuesday, with Ash the only guest.

It was great to see him on the bench last weekend at Harrow though. Ross is still someone who is sadly a way from returning as he is waiting on an operation.

Junior Baker came out of Tuesday with a cut eye but he should be ok today - fingers crossed that he is and we can be as strong as we possibly can be as we all know how important it is to build on last week’s fantastic win down at Harrow with some more points this afternoon.

So get behind the boys and I’ll see you on Tuesday, when I’ll have my column back!

It’s in the early stages of the FA Cup that the football family comes together to prove that the greatest cup competition in the world is exactly that – and last weekend it did so quite literally.

Wherever I looked, whether live in front of my eyes at Grimsby, helping proof-read the scripts for ITV’s highlights show on Saturday night or in the BT Sport studio on Sunday afternoon for the second round draw programme, there were stories aplenty proving that the Cup is very much in the blood.

At Blundell Park, for example, my old Ware team-mate Scott Neilson was the Mariners’ star man as the Skrill Premier side bossed their game against League Two Scunthorpe for long parts.

The Town winger’s granddad, Cliff Jones, was a member of Tottenham Hotspur’s league and cup double-winning side in 1960-61, and Scott – who has already been to the fifth round twice with Crawley – is hoping the White Hart Lane legend’s magic can rub off again at Glanford Park.

I hot-footed it down to ITV’s London studios on the banks of the River Thames for a couple of hours before the highlights went on air, and there I was confronted by a wonder strike by James Marwood for Gateshead at

Oxford.

The Heed midfielder’s dad Brian, of course, played for the other north London giant, Arsenal, and once for England before moving into football administration, where he has been part of Manchester City’s recent Cup success.

Down at Welling we had Lee Clarke, the son of former Northern Ireland international striker Colin, scoring the Wings’ first goal in a 2-1 win over fellow Skrill Premier club Luton Town.

While poor Joe Martin – the son of Alvin, the 1980 Cup winner with West Ham – was also on the scoresheet for a Non-League side, opening the scoring for Brackley Town despite being a Gillingham player!

On Sunday, I headed down to Stratford to appear on BT’s draw show in their state-of-the-art studio next to the Olympic Stadium.

The building is actually where the media were based during London 2012, and Chris Hollins – a regular face on our screens reporting the action from that glorious summer – was presenting the show.

Having discovered that I knew his father through many chats we had

during his time managing in Non-League, Chris – himself a former player with Aldershot Town in their Ryman League days – got on the phone and told John to come over to watch the show live.

The 1970 Wembley winner with Chelsea arrived half-an-hour before we went on air, and we had a great catch-up while discussing recent developments at his old clubs Crawley and Weymouth, as well as how he and ‘Cliffy’ Jones still come up against each other in their Premier League matchday hospitality roles!

Both John and Chris – famous for his BBC TV work and winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2009 – are real down-to-earth, genuine football lovers who made the experience so enjoyable.

To cap the family theme off, while we interviewed Connor Jenning live on the phone, it came to me that the two-goal Macclesfield hero of the 4-0 slaying of Swindon could come up against his older brother James, the Mansfield left-back, in the draw.

That one didn’t transpire – but my fingers are crossed for more family affairs when the big boys enter in round three!

18 The Mead v Carshalton Athletic

It was only back in May that he lifted the Play-Off trophy, but today Lewis Tozer will be leading Keith McMahon’s Mead side out in search of three vital Ryman Premier League points.

But if there is anyone that knows all about the battles that the side have faced so far and of the battles that still lie ahead in the months to come, then it is the Mead skipper.

Keith’s side have been struggling against a bad hand of luck in recent weeks, with costly decisions going against the Mead seemingly week after week.

And although it is often said that you create your own luck, Lewis admitted that it was something he was struggling to get his head around as Thamesmead continue to persevere in

the hunt for survival. “Before the win at Harrow last week, the previous couple of games had left me almost speechless if I’m honest,” he told us.

“We’ve really been having no luck whatsoever but, then again, we need to create our own luck.

“We have been playing increasingly well in more and more games, but when you’re down at the bottom the decisions don’t seem to go your way, as has been the case against Bognor Regis and Harrow just lately.”

Despite the controversial penalty, a terrific save by Rob Budd kept the Mead on course to pick up a vital three points in that most recent league game against Harrow, and the side have looked more impressive lately.

It has taken its time in getting there, but it does seem as though the team have now settled down into life in the Ryman Premier League following last season’s promotion triumph.

Putting your finger on the reasons for the testing start to the season is trickier, though, but Lewis believes that there are one or two factors at work.

“We don’t seem to have as much belief out there as we did last season,” he explained. “But then that’s because of the position that we find ourselves in.

“I also think that we’re missing a lot of our big players from last season to be honest, we’re missing them a lot.

“Certainly, the opposition is a better standard than we’ve faced before, but then I didn’t think that the Ryman North was all that good last year really

so that will only make the leap seem even greater.

The fixture list hasn’t been too kind to the Mead as they settle into their new surrounds, having faced almost all of the top sides during the majority of their fixtures to date.

However, with a run of fixtures that now looks more welcoming, on paper at least, Lewis insists that Keith’s side have got themselves through that tough period with plenty of reason to hold their heads high.

“There’s only been one side this season who have outplayed us completely, and that was Maidstone,” he continued.

“We’ve always been in games but then struggled tot take our chances, and not defending properly when it has mattered the most.

“There are players in this league who don’t need many chances in front of goal, and we’ve had to adapt to that so quickly but its possibly taken too long for us to do so far.”

Any sportsman will want to go out and win each week but, just as importantly, they will be keen to do themselves justice and perform to the best of their abilities.

And Lewis revealed just how frustrating it has been so far for the side to struggle when it has mattered with the things that they know they’re capable of doing.

He joked: “Really, I’m surprised that I’ve got any hair left at all! It really is so frustrating on the pitch whilst it has all been going on.

“I absolutely hate losing and I know that all of the boys in there do as well, and it’s been the worst feeling in the world this year.”

Last weekend’s 2-1 win away at Harrow provided some optimism for the camp to grasp onto though and, as they head into today’s six-pointer with

bottom side Carshalton, Lewis knows that there has

been an indication that there could

be brighter times ahead.

“We can’t just give up and quit, or else I would

have probably left by now,” he stated.

“But performances have been improving and we’ve

got to keep going, hoping that we can get that bit of luck somewhere down the line to take us in the right direction.”

If you really do create your own luck, then perhaps the turning of the tide began when Rob Budd thwarted the Harrow penalty, and the recent endeavours of Keith’s side will lead to a more prosperous campaign now.

One man who has been endeavouring tirelessly since the start of the campaign to get things going for the Mead has been Keith, and the skipper had plenty of encouragement for the boss.

He explained: “The gaffer really is a top bloke and great to play for.

“He’s very passionate and he wants to win every

game we play more than anyone.”

The Mead are now over a third of

the way through the Ryman Premier

League campaign, and although it still

feels like there is a long way to go, the

Mead skipper is only too aware that

the time will continue to fly by.

With plenty of new additions to the

squad throughout the campaign so far,

the side finally appears to be settling

down and, Lewis concluded, this will

be important in the side’s quest for

survival.

“We can’t keep saying every week

that there’s a lot of points to play for, as

before we know it there will only be a

few games left,” he suggested.

“All the boys are passionate about

winning games, though, and the

gaffer tries to instil that throughout the

dressing room.”

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

With top of the Ryman Premier’s table at stake on Saturday, it was Kingstonian who moved to the summit following a goalless draw against AFC Hornchurch at Bridge Avenue.

The game was a little disappointing as a spectacle, with little enough goalmouth action or chances of note to entertain fans as the sides cancelled each other out.

Wealdstone moved up to fourth place after a 3-0 win at the Courage Stadium against a now second-bottom Cray Wanderers.

It wasn’t quite as comfortable as the score line suggests, the Stones taking 66 minutes to break through a stubborn home defence when Scott McGleish netted from close range.

Twelve minutes later and it was 2-0 when the visitors were awarded a penalty for handball and Sean Cronin converted the spot-kick.

The best was saved until last though as, two minutes from time, veteran McGleish turned and volleyed a superb strike past Charlie Grainger in the Cray goal.

In a fiery encounter with both sides

ending the match with ten-men, Lowestoft Town earned a 2-0 win at the Dripping Pan against Lewes to move above them into seventh spot.

Goals from recent signing Manny Osei after 51 minutes and Rob Eagle on 73 minutes saw an end to the Rooks` unbeaten home record this season. Eagle and the home side`s Nathan Crabb both received second yellow cards late on to see both sides end with ten-men.

Improving Billericay Town had to be content with a point at Victory Road against a Leiston side who levelled late on.

The home side had a great start when Gareth Heath gave them a first-minute

lead. But seconds after half-time, Ricky Sappleton equalised and then midway through the half Sean Bonnet-Johnson gave the Essex visitors the lead.

But with 7 minutes remaining, sub Joe Francis popped up to equalise from close range.

Canvey Island are tenth now after a last-gasp win at Imber Court against Metropolitan Police.

It looked like ending as a stalemate and then Met defender Elliot Taylor was dismissed for a second yellow with less than four minutes to go.

And the Gulls took full advantage, grabbing a last-minute winner, courtesy of a Rob Bartley header.

Steve Whitney rounds up last weekend’s action in the

Ryman Premier League

SAUNDERS HEADS BACK TO SCHOOLMaidstone United manager Jay Saunders is taking up a coaching role with the Ryman Premier club’s academy to help develop their stars of the future.

The 34-year-old, who guided the Stones to promotion from Ryman South last season, will coach and train students at their academy and work with the two Football Conference Youth Alliance squads at the Gallagher Stadium.

Saunders said: “I am delighted to be joining the academy. I spent a fortnight with the academy this summer and it was a great opportunity to look at the lads and see who’s ready to make the step up to the first team.”

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

The Mead’s first win in five games lifted them off the bottom of the Ryman Premier table last weekend.

Keith McMahon’s side travelled to Harrow Borough looking for an important three points, and they ran out 2-1 winners thanks to an 88th minute winner from Jack Hopkins.

The result lifted the Mead off the bottom of the table and provided hope for the weeks ahead as the side go into a more welcoming run of fixtures.

Meanwhile, the game also marked the return of Ashley Probets for the Mead who returned from his long injury lay-off to take up a place on the substitutes’ bench.

The home side started quicker than McMahon’s visitors and were twice denied by the frame of Rob Budd’s goal in the opening five minutes.

Firstly, Sankoh’s twenty-yard piledriver was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Budd, but even he was then subsequently helpless not too long after when the same player watched his thumping drive cannon back off of

the right-hand post.

It was an early warning by Harrow who continued to fire all guns blazing at the Mead goal but, having held out during the siege-like start, the Mead were finally able to begin playing the sort of football that has been missing too often this year.

Danny Phillips curled a shot just too

high as the Mead began to threaten their hosts’ goal, before George Monger fired in a free-kick that was only a matter inches just wide of the near post.

As the tide really started to turn their way, the Mead took advantage of the improvement in their performance and took the lead shortly before half-time, courtesy of the Tonbridge loanee

Mikel Suarez.

Mikel showed his class in putting the Mead into the lead, as his excellent hold up play led to him turning a defender sweetly and firing his effort into the bottom corner.

It was the loanee’s first goal for McMahon’s side in his third appearance, but the hosts soon missed a golden opportunity to level just three minutes after the break.

It was Sankoh again who was the thorn in the Mead defence, and despite the Mead’s protests of innocence, Harrow were awarded a penalty when the referee adjudged Sankoh to have been fouled.

Butterworth stepped up to level the scores, but he could only watch as Budd pulled off a stunning save from the spot kick to restore some justice.

Up followed another fine save from the Mead goalkeeper shortly afterwards as he denied Willock’s effort on the turn, and the second half developed into an end-to-end encounter.

Akinola’s glancing header from Berry’s cross was saved

again by Budd, before Suarez was denied

his second of the match by the width of the crossbar as his angled drive bounced back to

him - agonisingly close to sealing

all three points for Thamesmead.

Harrow threw on a double change shortly afterwards, including the introduction of Lucien, and he quickly made an impact by forcing Lewis Tozer to brilliantly block a shot.

The substitute then levelled the scores up inside the last twenty minutes, as he fired home a terrific free-kick from the edge of the box, leaving Budd with no chance as the ball sailed beyond him.

Theo Fairweather-Johnson watched the home goalkeeper deny his effort, and

another overhead attempt flew over the bar.

The home side were becoming increasingly frustrated as the game entered its latter stages, and the Mead could sense that they could bring a run of agonising defeats to an end.

That proved to be the case with just two minutes remaining on the clock. From a late corner, Junior Baker found himself amongst acres of space to power in a free header, and Hopkins was on hand to divert the ball in and bag a crucial three points for the Mead.

The result illustrated how anyone in the division can beat each other - having lost to AFC Hornchurch the weekend

before, Harrow had defeated the Urchins in midweek.

It’s a funny old game, but Keith and the side will be hoping that the result can

provide the lift needed to spark

a run of points as the Mead look to climb

towards Ryman Premier League safety.

COMMERCIALCORNER

Good afternoon everyone as we bid a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Carshalton Athletic to Sporting Club Thamesmead for today’s Ryman Premier League contest.

First off, and just to clear up any confusion once and for all, the reason that our scheduled home game here last Tuesday against Hampton & Richmond was postponed was because of the league’s insistence that we play our League Cup tie at Ware which had been called off the previous two Tuesdays. Our game with Hampton will now be played next Tuesday, November 26th, here at the SCT with a 7.45pm kick-off! With Christmas rapidly approaching we’re still looking at getting our new merchandise team together, so if you’ve any ideas of items that we can stock then please do let us know. We do, though, have some stocking fillers in the shape of Mead badges and 2014 diaries - both of which are on sale today. Please see Gareth in the Mead Lounge before the game if you’d like to get your hands on either of these.

Do you own a local company or are associated with one and would like to become part of our family here at the SCT? Simply get in touch with me on a matchday or by the contact details listed elsewhere on the page to see what’s available for you.

Another big thank you to the Cooper family for their sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award - after the last home game with AFC Hornchurch, there was a mass presentation to the four winners thus far, whilst Danny Phillips was named Man of the Match for that game. Who will get it today? Why not stay and see the presentation in the Mead Lounge at around 5.15pm! Last thing from me this afternoon - Tuesday night here at the SCT sees both Ryman Premier League football and Champions League on the big screen - now try and think of a better way to spend a Tuesday evening!

Cheers,Greenie

2013/14 FIXTURES & RESULTS

RICHMONDIt is not against the sides at the top of the table who will determine the Mead’s fate this season, but rather it is the fixtures against those who are in and around the wrong end too.

Last weekend’s win at Harrow has given the side a new lease of life heading into today’s six-pointer with Carshalton, and it is an opportunity for the side to string together back to back results for the first time this season.

Having played most of the top sides in a testing start to the season, the Mead are entering a run of fixtures that will fill them with hope, and return to action here on Tuesday night to take on Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Like the Mead, the Beavers have been struggling for form this season and remain on the fringes of the bottom three, without a win in four and coming into the game off the back of three straight defeats in all competitions.

Darren Powell’s side had been making some strides in the FA Trophy to keep confidence alive, but they bowed out of the competition at the hands of Basingstoke last Saturday, before heading to Billericay this afternoon for a fourth successive away trip.

Powell though, who was appointed as the man in charge at the Beveree Stadium back in April, told the local press that he felt the side were playing

“some good stuff”, with the cup results preserving confidence in the side.

And perhaps he has a case to argue - before the recent run of successive away games, the Beavers had lost merely twice in fourteen games, illustrating a stronger backbone than current form suggests.

The Mead will be optimistic for a result on Tuesday night, however.
