Off to a Flying Start! Flying Start at Crookwell Public began on Monday for children who are commencing school in 2015. The children had a wonderful time during mixed activities, making a beautiful portrait of themselves to take home. What a Flying Start we have had already!

The Flying Start children display their inspired self-portraits.

Library News One of the new books that has arrived in the library by Jeff Kinney is “Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Hard Luck”.

Jessica Eddy had the pleasure of reading the book over the

weekend and here is what she had to say. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Hard Luck” is a wonderful book. Greg is left alone to walk to school and to play in the playground because his friend Rowley has a girlfriend. Greg’s grades start going down and if he doesn’t improve, he will have to go to summer school. I recommend the book because it is easy to read and the illustrations are funny.

There are many great books to read that Book Club has purchased for the library. Look out for them when you visit the library next. The library is also trialling the purchase of magazines and the local newspaper for browsing in the library. They can be found near the enquiry terminal.

The class that had the most borrowers this week was Year 6.

Many of the books being read by these borrowers are on the Premier’s Reading Challenge list which can now be entered online.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy testing will take place on Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 May. Every year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are assessed on the same days using national tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The results help determine if students are reaching important educational outcomes.

The following tips may assist students to achieve their personal best as they participate in the National Assessment Program next week:-

• Drink plenty of water prior to the test.

• Get at least 8 hours sleep the nights before the test.

• Stay calm.

• Listen to instructions and ask for clarification when needed.

• Read precisely and think carefully.

• Pace yourself i.e. use your time wisely.

• Check your work if time allows.

• Eat a healthy breakfast.

You can do nothing more than your best and we know you will each do that.

Good luck Year 3 and Year 5 from everybody at Crookwell Public School. If your child is currently in Year 3, 5, 7 or 9, they'll sit NAPLAN tests this May. And despite what you may have heard, there's no reason to panic or start an intensive study schedule for your child.

Kids, Social Media and Privacy

Regardless of your child’s age, the world may already know a lot more about them than you suspect. According to recent research:

92% of children under the age of 2 have a digital

shadow (- it starts with proud parents posting newborn

baby photos on Facebook or Instagram).

a quarter of Australian children 8 - 12 years old use

Facebook, but the minimum age for a user is 13 years.

more than 20 per cent of tweens publish photos of

themselves on Instagram.

young people 14 - 19 have an average of 453 fans,

friends or followers on social media.

2014 Privacy Awareness Week, 4 - 10 May 2014, is a good time to review your family’s privacy settings and discuss online security. You’ll find lots of practical information and resources to share with your kids at www.ipc.nsw.gov.au

Printable Planners for Homework and Study School A to Z has printable monthly planners which include school holidays and the numbered weeks of each Term (for example Monday 19 May is the start of Week 4, in Term 2). Print one for each child to stick on the fridge or on their noticeboards. It’s a great way to teach them how scheduling their time means they’ll to fit in the fun activities as well as their other commitments and responsibilities. Download May 2014 at http://bit.ly/UbmQz8

Is Your Child’s Backpack Damaging Their Spine? A recent Australian study has shown that approximately 25% of school-aged children suffer from back and/or neck pain at any one time. It’s believed to be due to a combination of factors such as poor posture, everyday load carrying and the use of computers. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead suggests young people should:

not carry more than 10% of their body weight.

use a backpack with the straps over both shoulders and

a waist strap.

load gear so that the heavier objects are nearer to the

spine, with the lighter objects towards the front of the

pack.

lift a backpack properly- bend at the knees and lift the

pack with both hands.

English Refresher from School A to Z on Homonyms Homonyms (also known as homographs) are words that are identical in pronunciation and spelling but have different meanings. They can be nouns, adjectives or verbs. The context gives them their meaning.

Ask your child for an example, like this one: I prefer a fine tip on my pen. He gave me a tip for the Melbourne Cup. Don’t tip the water on the floor. You gave the waiter a generous tip.

Welfare Issues To safeguard the health and safety of students could you please:-

Notify the school if the routine way your child goes home changes to ensure your child gets to their correct destination without confusion.

Inform the school promptly of your child’s absence from school to help protect the health and well-being of students.

Ensure unwell children are kept at home until they are fully recovered to prevent cross-infection and re-infection.

Make sure that your address and contact numbers match those that the school has on file.

Amended Stage 2 (Years 3/4) National Dinosaur Museum Excursion As part of Stage 2 Science studies, students have been learning about and investigating Dinosaurs. On Wednesday 21st May, students have the opportunity to participate in an excursion to the National Dinosaur Museum in Canberra. Students will experience a guided tour through the museum as well as participating in a fossil casting workshop. The exhibition provides a journey through millions of years, starting with the earliest dinosaurs, then progressing through the different eras, discussing Australian dinosaurs, the ice age, and finishing with more recent megafauna. The experienced tour guides have a background in science and a passion for the natural world. They are trained to answer even the strangest of questions.

A unique fossil casting activity allows children to make their own fossil replica in plaster, cast from real ancient fossils sourced from all over the world. Participation in this experience provides the opportunity for students to learn how scientists differentiate between the various forms of fossilization, whilst also giving them a physical memory of their visit to the museum to take home. Students are to arrive at school at normal time with the buses to depart by 9:30am. Buses will return students to school by 3:15pm in time for normal pick up. Children will

need to wear full school uniform including their hat. Children will need to bring with them their recess, lunch and a drink bottle in a small plastic bag.

The cost will be $39.50 which includes bus travel to and from the venue, guided tour of the museum and fossil casting workshop.

Stage 1 Parent Helpers Needed! Students in Year 1 and Year 2 have been learning about Australian History and what family life was like in times gone by. Students have been exploring how previous generations have lived and worked. They have been comparing this with their own experiences. We are planning to take students in Year 1 and Year 2 to Canberra on the 26

th August to Calthorpes House

and Mugga Mugga Historical Cottage. Throughout this excursion students will be immersed in times gone by where they will be able to deepen their understanding of life in the past and engage in “hands on” learning experiences.

To make this experience more affordable we require your assistance to man the street stalls organised for Thursday 15

th May and Thursday 5

th June. All proceeds raised from

the wood raffles and street stalls will go towards reducing the cost of this excursion and making this affordable to all students to attend. Half an hour to an hour of your time would be greatly appreciated to man the stalls on these days. If you would like to assist but cannot make it on these days we are also looking for delicious homemade biscuits, cakes and slices that can be sold on the day at the stall.

Please return the slip below if you can assist us any way on either of the above mentioned days.

Many Thanks Mrs McCormack, Miss Kemp and Mr Whittington - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Kindergarten History Last term Kindergarten put together a folder of work that told the story of their family. This term it is planned that we will investigate a little bit of life in earlier times by looking at toys, objects and implements from the past.

Each child is invited to bring something to share that will help us all understand what people did in work and play in years gone by.

Every contribution, no matter how large or small, will be carefully looked after.

Miss Seaman and Miss Logan

Measuring Mass in 1/2M Students this week had a lot of fun investigating how many ones, tens and flats it took to balance the equal arm balance with objects they had collected from around the room. The children cautiously added materials to the equal arm balance to see if their items were balancing!

Sebastian Potts, Tiana-Mae Lewis, Lachlan Tetley and Claire Collins weighing a variety of classroom objects.

Mia Anderson, Bethany Murray, Levi Woods and Billy Snape

work collaboratively to determine the mass of objects.

Mothers’ Day Workshop in Kindergarten On Tuesday afternoon Kindergarten students were busy creating secret Mothers’ day gifts. Mrs Bell kindly offered her time and many fun resources to help assist Kindergarten to make their Mothers’ Day gift very unique. Kindergarten had a great time learning new crafty skills and producing something special for their Mum! We hope our Kindergarten Mum’s have a lovely Mothers’ Day!

Mrs Bell works with Vincent Bill to create his Mothers’ Day

gift whilst Skyelah Gray eagerly waits in line and Jay Knight watches what to do!

NSW School Rugby League Knockout The Crookwell Public School Rugby league team took on Queanbeyan Public School in Round 1 of the NSW Schools Knockout in freezing conditions on Monday morning. The boys took a while to warm up but then found their rhythm and really got in to the game through some strong defence and hard ball running. The teams went in to the sheds at half time with the scores at 6 - 4 to Queanbeyan.

Some quick tries to Queanbeyan straight after the half time break made it hard for our boys to come back in difficult conditions. The full time whistle sounded with Queanbeyan taking out the game 26 – 8.

Our boys tried hard all game and never once took a backwards step. Try scorers were Zac McGregor and Oscar Rose.

Thank you to our parent supporters and our coaching team of Alex Rose, Jason Waters and Anna Gardiner. Your time is greatly appreciated.

Thank you also to Beau Croker for refereeing the game and Aaron Croke and Jacob McGregor for being the linesmen.

The 2014 CPS Rugby League team.

Nicholas Selmes ran the ball hard all game.

Ben Flood was hard to handle and

made some great line breaks.

Zac McGregor and Connor Kelly were tireless in defence.

Responsible Pet Education Program for K-2 On Wednesday the 21

st May children in Kindergarten, Year 1

and Year 2 will be attending a Responsible Pet Education Program called “Children and Dogs – it is our duty to care!” The program aims to arm children with knowledge,

skills and strategies to minimise risk. With so many households owning a pet it is fair to say that all children will come into contact with a dog at some stage and it is important to understand how to interact safely and to identify safe and unsafe situations.

If you do not wish for your child to attend the Responsible Pet Education Program please make your child’s teacher aware by phoning the school office on 48 321 213.

Thank you Miss Logan

Lost Hannah Shipton has lost her polar fleece school jumper and Bowen Murray has lost his school sports jacket. Your help to find these lost items would be greatly appreciated.

Mothers’ Day Stall Today’s Mothers’ Day stall was a great success, with helpers kept busy selling an amazing array of gifts to an enthusiastic horde of satisfied customers.

Thank you to the students who supported the stall and to the band of workers for the big effort they made manning the stall You have each helped to make someone’s Mothers’ Day a little more special.

Happy Mothers’ Day!
