Mostknowitaspoliovirus.Thevirusisspreadpersontoperson,typicallythroughcontaminatedwater.Itcanattackthenervoussystem,andinsomeinstances,leadtoparalysis.Althoughthereisnocure,thereisasafeandeffectivevaccine–onewhichRotaryandourpartnersusetoimmunizeover2.5billionchildrenworldwide.involveadifferentaudiencefromtheinstitute.

Polio mainly affects children

under age of 5

There is no cure, but polio is

preventable with a vaccine.

Mostofusdon'tgivemuchthoughttoourhips—untilwefallandbreakone.Unfortunately,thelikelihoodofahipfracturegoesupaswegetolderandourbonesbecomemorefrail—especiallyinwomen.Infact,accordingtotheNationalOsteoporosisFoundation,halfofallwomenaged50andupwillbreakaboneduetoosteoporosis.Andofthenearly300,000hipfracturepatientsannually,one‐quarterendupinnursinghomesandhalfwillnotregainfullfunction.

Keepingyourhipshealthyandstronginvolvesbuildingboneandstrengtheningthemusclesthatsupportthehips.Here'swhatyoucandotopreserveyourhiphealth:

1.ExerciseregularlyDoweight‐bearingexercisessuchaswalking,dancing,andhiking,whichstimulateboneformation.Aimfor30minutesmostdaysoftheweek.Considerdoingresistancetrainingoraquaticweightbearingexerciseslikewateraerobics.Onestudyfoundbothareeffectiveatpreventingbonelossaftermenopause,includingboneinthehips.“Exercisesthatmaintainandimprovebalancearealsogoodtoloweryourriskforfalling,”
