How can you help your child be successful in mathematics?

Important Concepts: -Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. -Multiply four by one and two by two- digit multiplication problems using strategies based on place value such as rectangular arrays, area model, or partial products. -Divide whole numbers with up to four- digit dividends and one-digit divisors using strategies based on place value such as rectangular arrays, area model, or partial quotients. -Solve multi-step word problems with whole numbers involving all four operations. When solving division problems with remainders, students are expected to interpret the remainder. -Use estimation and rounding to determine reasonableness of a solution when computing whole numbers. Misconceptions: - When subtracting numbers that require regrouping, encourage your child to examine the place value of the digits and think about situations where and why regrouping is necessary when using the standard algorithm.

-Children may confuse place value of digits when dividing. Help your child see the relationship between multiplication and division to help them determine the value of the quotient.

Things to Do: - Encourage your child to round and give an estimate before adding subtracting, multiplying or dividing. This will help them determine if their final answer is reasonable.

-Continue to practice math facts at home using First in Math. Solving problems with multi-digit numbers is more challenging for children who have not mastered their facts.

Dear Parents,

Unit 15 will be a culminating unit focusing on the four operations to solve problems and use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. By the end of 4th grade, it is expected that students add and subtract whole numbers within 1,000,000 using the standard algorithm, and multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers using strategies such as partial product and area model for multiplication and partial quotient and area model for division. Mastery of these skills will be essential in preparation for learning new concepts in 5th grade.

Vocabulary Review: Sum: the result of addition Difference: the amount between two numbers; the result of subtraction Product: the result of multiplication Factor: a number that is multiplied Multiple: a product of a number and any other whole number Ex: 6, 12, 18, 24 are multiples of 6 Dividend: the number divided by another number Divisor: the number by which another number is divided Quotient: the result of division Ex: 72 ÷ 8 = 9

Dividend Divisor Quotient Remainder: the amount leftover that cannot be divided by the divisor
