FEATURING

Gregory A. Carroll is a seasoned arts executive, performer and educator. He is the founder, President/CEO of Midnight Blue Jazz, LLC – A global jazz & executive consultancy providing creative, scholarly and strategic services to the non-profit, education, and corporate communities. Along-side his work with Midnight Blue Jazz, Greg recently joined the professional staff as Director of Development of Youth Symphony of Kansas City,

Greg was Chief Executive Officer of the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Missouri where he successfully led funds and program development efforts generating more than $18.5M through municipal contract negotiations, corporate and foundation sponsorships, contributions and earned revenues.  Under his leadership, individual donor contributions grew from 4% of to-tal budget to 35%. Additionally, the museum became a viable destination attraction for the City of Kansas City and garnered numerous awards and recognitions of distinction including its Blue Room Jazz Club being named as one of the world’s top 100 jazz venues by Downbeat Magazine. Previous positions of note include Director of Education with the International Association for Jazz Education and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Colorado.  He held these positions after 12 unforgettable years in Colorado classrooms as an award-winning junior high school & high school Instrumental Music Director.

Selected honors include listing among the 100 most Influential African Americans in Kansas City; the Presser Scholar for the University of Northern Colorado School of Music; Boettcher Foundation Outstanding Teacher, and Colorado Jazz Educator of the Year. His high school and college groups have earned a total of seven national Down Beat Magazine Student Music Awards for best and outstanding performances in the jazz category.

As a jazz artist, Greg can be heard on twenty-three recording projects with the likes of Michael Pagan, Everett Devan, Angela Hagenbach, Hugh Ragin Collective, Midnight Blue Jazz Quartet, Leslie Drayton, Marc Sabatella, Peter Barbieri, Cat’s Night Out, The James Ward Band, University of Colorado, Greeley Central High School, University of Northern Colorado, and Denver Public Schools. With a rich performance portfolio, Greg has had the pleasure of serving as an accompanying musician with a who’s-who of celebrated jazz artists including, Clark Terry, George Benson, Dave Grusin, Don Grusin, Nelson Rangell, Chico Freeman, Bobby Shew, Phil Wilson, Don Menza, Diana Reeves, Louie Bellson, Gary Foster, Rob McConnell, Kenny Werner, Kenny Baron, Dr. Billy Taylor, Richie Cole, Red Holloway, Bobby Watson, Steve Houghton, Shelly Berg, John Blake, Stéphane Grappelli, Frank Potenza, Connaitre Miller, Orbert Davis, Horace Young, Dana Landry, Eric Applegate, Reggie Thomas, Willie Hill, Ron McCurdy, Steve Houghton, and others.

Mr. Carroll is Emeritus Trustee with the Kansas State University Foundation Board of Trustees; co-founder and board member of Kansas City Jazz ALIVE; a member of the Jaris Foundation Board of Directors; and has served on boards of the Kansas City Convention and Visitors Association, Mayor’s Task Force for the Arts, Kansas City Arts Commission, and the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra. Carroll holds a BME degree from the University of Northern Colorado and an MME from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

A central figure of the vibrant Kansas City jazz scene since the 1980s. Bassist, composer and Kansas native Bob Bowman has been a major contributor to Kansas City jazz since 1988. After touring the world with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band and singer Carmen McRae, he has been sharing his gift with Kansas City audiences for 30 years.

Celebrating the technical and emotional range of today’s male dancer. Their boyish athleticism marks this all-male repertory dance company performing newly commissioned and recreations of modern works. Their variety, humor and superior skill punctuate an evening you won’t forget.

The Midnight Blue Jazz Quintet featuring Greg Carroll, and Kansas City’s Vine Street Rumble Jazz Orchestra led by Kent Rausch, present a highly interactive performance emceed by award-winning KMBC9 NEWS Chief Meteorologist, Bryan Busby. Gregory A. Carroll is a seasoned arts executive, performer and educator. He is the founder, President/CEO of Midnight Blue Jazz, LLC – A global jazz & executive consultancy providing creative, scholarly and strategic services to the non-profit, education, and corporate communities. Along-side his work with Midnight Blue Jazz, Greg recently joined the professional staff as Director of Development of Youth Symphony of Kansas City,

Greg was Chief Executive Officer of the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Missouri where he successfully led funds and program development efforts generating more than $18.5M through municipal contract negotiations, corporate and foundation sponsorships, contributions and earned revenues.  Under his leadership, individual donor contributions grew from 4% of to-tal budget to 35%. Additionally, the museum became a viable destination attraction for the City of Kansas City and garnered numerous awards and recognitions of distinction including its Blue Room Jazz Club being named as one of the world’s top 100 jazz venues by Downbeat Magazine. Previous positions of note include Director of Education with the International Association for Jazz Education and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Colorado.  He held these positions after 12 unforgettable years in Colorado classrooms as an award-winning junior high school & high school Instrumental Music Director.

Selected honors include listing among the 100 most Influential African Americans in Kansas City; the Presser Scholar for the University of Northern Colorado School of Music; Boettcher Foundation Outstanding Teacher, and Colorado Jazz Educator of the Year. His high school and college groups have earned a total of seven national Down Beat Magazine Student Music Awards for best and outstanding performances in the jazz category.

As a jazz artist, Greg can be heard on twenty-three recording projects with the likes of Michael Pagan, Everett Devan, Angela Hagenbach, Hugh Ragin Collective, Midnight Blue Jazz Quartet, Leslie Drayton, Marc Sabatella, Peter Barbieri, Cat’s Night Out, The James Ward Band, University of Colorado, Greeley Central High School, University of Northern Colorado, and Denver Public Schools. With a rich performance portfolio, Greg has had the pleasure of serving as an accompanying musician with a who’s-who of celebrated jazz artists including, Clark Terry, George Benson, Dave Grusin, Don Grusin, Nelson Rangell, Chico Freeman, Bobby Shew, Phil Wilson, Don Menza, Diana Reeves, Louie Bellson, Gary Foster, Rob McConnell, Kenny Werner, Kenny Baron, Dr. Billy Taylor, Richie Cole, Red Holloway, Bobby Watson, Steve Houghton, Shelly Berg, John Blake, Stéphane Grappelli, Frank Potenza, Connaitre Miller, Orbert Davis, Horace Young, Dana Landry, Eric Applegate, Reggie Thomas, Willie Hill, Ron McCurdy, Steve Houghton, and others.

Mr. Carroll is Emeritus Trustee with the Kansas State University Foundation Board of Trustees; co-founder and board member of Kansas City Jazz ALIVE; a member of the Jaris Foundation Board of Directors; and has served on boards of the Kansas City Convention and Visitors Association, Mayor’s Task Force for the Arts, Kansas City Arts Commission, and the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra. Carroll holds a BME degree from the University of Northern Colorado and an MME from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
