2O16/2O17SEASON
CELEBRATING5O YEARS
DAVID IRA GOLDSTEIN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to Arizona Theatre Company’s
50th Anniversary Season! Five decades
ago, a small group of passionate theatre
lovers gathered in a living room to share
a dream of a professional theatre rooted
in our beloved Sonoran desert. What they
created slowly became a gathering
place for millions in our communities
to experience a wide- ranging mix of
powerful plays and thrilling theatre.
This season for our golden anniversary
we celebrate the rich artistry, history,
entertainment and craft that has graced
our stages for 50 years: infused and
invigorated by the immense joy and
gratitude that stems from decades
of sharing our artistry with our vibrant
Arizona communities.

KING CHARLES IIIBY Mike Bartlett
TUCSON 09/10/16 – 09/30/16 PHOENIX 10/06/16 – 10/23/16
“Flat-out brilliant.” – THE NEW YORK TIMES
THE QUEEN IS DEAD. After a lifetime of waiting, Prince Charles ascends the throne with Camilla by his side. As William, Kate and Harry look on, Charles prepares for the future of power that lies before him…but how will he rule? The play draws on the style and structure of a Shakespearean history play, but with modern verve, a comic subplot, and even the occasional appearance of a significant ghost. This exciting and provocative new Broadway hit of political intrigue by Mike Bartlett, King Charles III explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of democracy, and the conscience of its most famous family.

TUCSON 01/14/17 – 02/04/17 PHOENIX 02/09/17 – 02/26/17
A SECRET THE RIVER WON’T GIVE UP. Once upon a time, in a fishing village along the Amazon, there lived two sisters struggling to find their happily-ever-after. Helena is dreading her sister Belmira’s wedding. The groom, Duarte, should have been hers! And she knows that her sister only wants to escape their sleepy Brazilian town for an exciting new life in the city. But three days before the wedding, fishermen pull a mysterious stranger out of the river – a man with no past who offers both sisters an alluring, possibly dangerous future. Brazilian folklore and lyric storytelling blend into a heartrending tale of true love, regret, transformation, and the struggle to stay true to your family while staying true to yourself.

A thrilling new Sherlock Holmes mystery.
A WORLD PREMIERE MYSTERY! Following Holmes’ “death” at Reichenbach Falls, Dr. Watson is called upon to disprove the many frauds, fakes and charlatans all over the world who have popped-up claiming to be Holmes. Then…a newspaper clipping arrives. A remote mental asylum reports that three men have recently been admitted, each claiming to be the late detective. Each matches Holmes’ physical description. But one of them is quoted saying something only the real Holmes could possibly know. Watson travels to the asylum to confront the three patients, convinced that one of them must be the real Holmes. Commissioned by ATC especially for our 50th anniversary, Holmes and Watson is a devilishly clever and thrilling new mystery from the celebrated writer of the recent film Mr. Holmes and many past ATC hits including Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Ten Chimneys, and Ella.

SUMMER ON STAGE / BACKSTAGESummer on Stage and its sister programs are well-established and in high demand – offering deep, sustained and meaningful learning experiences for all involved. These five-week intensive training programs culminate in fully realized productions performed on the Mainstage, an experience that prepares young people for a creative and engaged life in the arts or in any field!
POST-SHOW DISCUSSIONSGo right to the source! This is your chance to ask questions! An ATC staff member leads post-show discussions with actors, guest artists and audience members. Offered after select main stage performances with your ticket purchase – visit the show schedules for more information.
MySHAKESPEAREThis is a multi-layered three-year learning project focusing on the themes of Shakespeare’s plays. By breaking down the language barrier and making Shakespeare accessible to young people across Arizona, this program develops dramatic and textual expertise as well as personal creativity and confidence.
STUDENT MATINÉE SERIES(For elementary, high school and college groups.) Student Matinées allow ATC to share the live theatre experience at low or no cost to young people throughout Arizona. If you child’s school is interested in joining a matinée, please call 520-884-8210 x7512 for more information.
