INTRODUCTION Filmmakers by no means unanimously regarded the arrival of sound in the motion picture as a great step forward.

The Raw-Realism of all the talkies disturbed many filmmakers, because up to the introduction of sound, film had achieved all of its effects visually.

At first the sound film incorporated synchronized dialogue known as Talking Pictures or Talkies in the mid to late 1920.

Sound Film: A sound film is a motion picture with synchronized sound, or sound technologically coupled to image, as opposed to a silent film.

Silent Film: The silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound, especially with no spoken dialogue. SOUND FILM & SILENT FILM

EVOLUTION OF SOUND FILM

THE FIRST SOUND FILM

In the History of Film, the first sound film was made in 1927.

The Jazz Singer is the first sound film which was released in 1927.

OPTIMISTIC BELIEF In the early days of sound film, composers for the cinema were optimistic and hoped that music might be able to play a more integral and influential role in the making of a film.

THE USE OF MUSIC IN FILM OPERA Again some composers directed their optimism in another direction.

They think that music of film-opera has to create and develop its own forms out of typical screen action, combining its different laws of space, time and motion.

ACTUALITY Rather than an artistic one, in the early days of 1930s, the sound film industry was a commercial enterprise.

First of all, public wished to be entertained.

DEVELOPMENT OF MUSIC IN SOUND FILM As the realization of the need for music in films grew, so after 1930, the film studios developed their own musical departments.

Since then music in sound film has been maintaining a continuous domination.

Conclusion My Topics

Developing Diegetic Form

The producers and directors from 1929 felt the necessity of explaining the music pictorially.

They started to add relevant musical devices with the scene.

Play Girls(1932)Director: Ray Enright

They also started to develop the use of conversations with the characters properly.

Example: Little Ceaser

Developing Synchronous Sound

Some movies used music only where it seemed to be consonance with the new Raw Realism of the talkies.

Developing Background music & musical sources

Attempts at the imaginative use of music in films as well as the background music developed within 1930.

Example: The Great Dictator (1940)Director: Charlie Chaplin

The film composers also learned a disciplined use of Source music, or music emanating from a clearly visible music source.

Falling in love again; The Blue Angel

Appearance of theme song craze

Use of theme song was economic just as it today.

Example: Wizard of the oz. Over the rainbow

The theme song used to advertise the film. When the theme song got popular, it was used to attract the audience to enrich the business of production company.

Example: Gone with the wind (1938)Director: Victor Fleming, George Cukor, Sam Wood

The problem was that the insertion of the song usually broke the dramatic action of the scene.

Who got the creditsThe composers of these Paste pot and scissors score, as Film critic Lawrence Morton characterized them, seldom received screen credit for their work.

The music director received screen credit for the music.

PopularityPublic lost interest on talkies without music. Popularity of musicals decreased.People want to get rid of the boring film music.Audiences want to be entertained. It was easy to communicate with spectators through music.

ConclusionTalkies created the new era of film. Talkies music had to endured many difficulties to keep pace with. But it also developed many new dimensions in film music afterwards. So the music in early talkies film is important to research with, to develop new music theme still now.

The Reason why music in sound film came:To pacify spiritual effect on its viewers.

To witch anxiety or help the spectator absorb the shock

To neutralize the noise of the primitive projections.
