Correct measurement

Finding the right sizeMeasuring tips:• When measuring your customer stand at her side. The customer‘s arms should hang loosely and she

should breathe normally.• Hold the tape loosely over the tip of the breast and read off the measurement at the side of the back.• Take measurements in a wellfitting soft bra (without underwires). The cup must encompass the breast

at the side and around the neckline without restriction.

The measured size serves as a guideline. The actual size and best comfort for each customer canonly be determined when she tries the item on!

Step by step to the rightsize

1. Underbust measurement ①Take the measurement by holding thetape directly under the bust. Thismeasurement is rounded up or down andassigned to a size (refer to table).

2. Bust measurement ②Place the tape directly over the widestpoint of the breast without cutting in.

3. Cup size ③The difference between the bustmeasurement ② and the underbust mea-surement ① is the cup size.

Example: ② - ① = 40.2 in - 33.5 in = 6.7 in6.7 in x 2.54 = 17 cm ➜ cup C ③➜ Underbust measurement ① and cupsize ③ = bra size (38 C)

4. Waist measurement ④Hold the tape horizontally around themost narrow part of the waist withoutcutting in.

5. Hip measurement ⑤Hold the tape horizontally withoutcutting in at the widest point of the hips.

Nota BeneIf there is a considerable differencebetween the waist and hip measure-ment, always take the larger size!

Interview:TFS: What are the possible negative con-sequences of not wearing a sports bra?Dr Beckstein: With large breasts in parti-cular there is the risk that the tissue beco-mes overstretched and the breast losesits firmness and elasticity. This affects allthe muscles in the back and especiallythose of the shoulders and neck. In somecases the consequences can be extreme-ly painful. A sports bra reliably protectsand encompasses the breast. The breasttissue remains elastic and does not loseits firmness.

TFS: Can sports bras help the breast tis-sue retain its firmness?Dr Beckstein: Yes, definitely. It is only im-portant to wear the bra at all times duringsporting activities, irrespective of whetheryou are keen on endurance sports, gym-nastics, hiking or skiing. Each type of acti-vity involves a different degree of joltingand shock. Wearing a sports bra all thetime will mean that the connective tissueremains firm, which is obviously what wo-men want.

TFS: In your view which features are es-sential in an optimum sports bra?Dr Beckstein: The straps must be wideand have a good contact surface to en-sure the best distribution of weight on theshoulders. It should also be ensured thatthe bra does not cut in and it should moveand adapt to the motion of the wearer.Flat and soft seams are also important toprevent skin irritation. The fabric shouldbe breathable and ensure optimum mois-ture transport. This is particularly impor-tant when the body temperature rises du-ring sports activities. The breast requiresfirm support, but the fabric should belightweight and soft. It should feel like asecond skin.

TFS: Which tips would you give our rea-ders for buying a sports bra?Dr Beckstein: ‘Go to a specialist outletwhere you will be given sound advice. It isvery difficult to answer the following ques-tions when you are standing in front of amirror: Does the bra fit properly? Is thebreast at the right height? The optimum fitis the decisive criterion for the protectiveand supportive function of a sports bra.’

TFS: Dr Beckstein, thank you verymuch for talking to us!

Experts agree:”A sports bra is an essen-

tial item!“Follow the recommendations of recogni-sed experts. Sports means a lot of move-ment, also for the breasts. During jogging, for example, the breast moves around 9centimetres with each ste. Over a courseof 1,000 metres this amounts to 84 me-tres! Dr Joanna Scurr from the Universityof Portsmouth discovered that a suppor-ting sports bra prevents around 74% ofthe upward and downward motion of thesensitive breast tissue, while a normal braonly manages around 38%.

We asked Dr med Sylvia Beckstein formore information. She is consultant forphysical and rehabilitation medicine, sports medicine and nutritional medicine.
