there were more than 72,293 junior

tournament entries in 2014. Over 970 Super

champ level players and 128 of the highest

ranked champ level junior players partic-

ipated in the caspher texas Grand Slam

tournament which continues to be one of the

largest junior tournaments in the U.S.

USta texas Junior team tennis

supported 5,600 registered players and

hosted 160 teams at three section champi-

onships. the texas Jtt championships

produced two teams that proudly went on to

win the USta Jtt National championships in

14U advanced (austin) and 18U advanced

(North richland Hills).

texas’ National Junior tennis & Learning

kid’s Days were led by Houston with 600

participants. Dallas followed with 200 and

austin at 100. Over 750 participants entered

the arthur ashe essay contest. Xavier

Gonzalez of Houston was honored as one of

two USta National Junior Scholar athlete

award winners and Manuel Mareno of

Dobie High in Houston was named a USta

No-cut coach all-Star team member.

texas participation in adult tennis

tournaments reached 18,578 entries. texas

adult players collected 38 Gold Balls for first

place finishes in national events including

Mary Lynch of rockport, who won the 80s

singles title at the USta National Women’s

60, 70, & 80 clay court championship. Julie

Cass of austin, texas won eight gold balls

and the ladies 45 singles title at the 2014 itF

Seniors World individual championships.

Henry Gordon of New Braunfels,

Ashley Weinhold of Spicewood, and former

Oklahoma State players Malika Rose and

Brady Bohrnstedt, won the US Open

National Playoffs texas Sectional. Six

Woodlands); and 9.0 Men’s 55 and Over

(Dallas). texas league teams finished second

at nationals with 3.0 Women’s 40 & Over

(austin); 4.0 Men’s 18 & Over (Houston); 4.0

Men’s 40 & Over (San antonio); 4.5 Women’s

18 & Over (Dallas); 8.0 Women’s 55 & Over

(Houston); 9.0 Women’s 55 & Over (Dallas);

and 9.0 Men’s 55 & Over (Houston).

Professional tennis teams thrived as the

(rSPFF) Scholarship. Katherine Richards of

George H.W. Bush & James Baker, III

President George H. W. Bush and

former U.S. Secretary of State James A.

Baker have teamed together in service to

their country and on the tennis court for

many decades. Long-

time doubles partners,

Bush and Baker were

inducted into the texas

tennis Hall of Fame as a

team. in the 1960s, the

two became tennis

partners at the Houston

country club winning

the club Doubles

championships in 1967

and 1968. together,

they became members

of the reagan White

House. Bush was

reagan’s Vice President

while Baker was White

House chief of Staff and

Secretary of the

treasury. When Bush

won the presidency, Baker served as his

Secretary of State. as teammates in public

office, Bush and Baker steadily guided the

country through a period of profound

international change and

helped bring about a

peaceful conclusion to

the cold War.

President Bush first

gained appreciation for

tennis during the

summers spent with his

family in Maine and

connecticut as a youth.

tennis was a family

endeavor. although

Bush played baseball for

yale, his interest in the

game of tennis never

waned. Bush has been

involved with many

tennis associations and events from the level

of honorary member all the way to chairman,

including USPta, tennis across america and

the Bluebonnet Bowl invitational tennis.

Bush has fervently supported tennis in texas

and across the United States for decades.

Secretary Baker’s first instructor, eugenie

kamrath Gonzalez said, “When i first gave

him lessons in 1937, i knew he was going to

be a really fine player. He paid attention and

put into practice the physical requirements of

footwork and stroke production at every

session. He had that internal fire, motivation,

and natural athletic ability that is needed to

excel.” Baker was a top singles player during

high school and later captain of his freshman

tennis team at Princeton University. Baker

won the singles championship

at the Houston country club six

out of seven years between

1958 and 1964.

in many of their public

appearances, President Bush

and Secretary Baker

showcased the game of tennis.

Whether it was a pro-charity

event, a fundraiser for a worthy

cause or by supporting the

game by providing a special

presence, the Bush-Baker duo

did it selflessly because they

loved the game of tennis. While

both gentlemen were

accomplished players, they are

being inducted into the texas tennis Hall of

Fame for their service to the game. Both men

encouraged youngsters to play tennis,

vigorously supported charitable tennis

tournaments and generously gave of their

time to promote tennis for decades. their

ability on the court and their service to texas

tennis makes them exemplary ambassadors

of the game.

Chris BovettHouston

Chris Bovett excelled in high school

tennis as a top 10 junior in the 18 and under

divisions in both england and australia.

Bovett compiled an impressive 93-27 singles

record during college before graduating from

the University of Houston in 1970. as a pro,

Bovett competed in three USPta Nationals

and nine Grand Slams. He was ranked No. 1

in Men’s 40s Singles in texas, 1984-1985. in

1971, Bovett began coaching at the Houston

racquet club. He has received numerous

awards for excellence in coaching, including

USPta coach of the year and the texas

tennis association’s Lloyd Session

educational Merit award. Bovett’s students

embody the excellence and dedication he

models. His students have competed in 37

USta National Junior championship Finals,

winning 25. Over 120 of his students have

played college tennis while 25 have gained

world professional rankings.

Susan Shelby TorranceCorpus Christi

Susan Shelby Torrance attended king

High School in corpus christi where she was

the UiL texas State Singles champion in

1968. She was also the texas Sectional

champion in doubles in 1967 and singles

champion in 1968. She went on to attend the

University of texas where she was the No. 1

Ut women’s varsity tennis player and

finished third in the State collegiate tennis

championships. in 1976, she graduated with

a Master of Science degree in kinesiology

from Lamar University. She then started

playing professionally and was ranked No. 1

for the Women’s Open Singles, USta texas

section in 1978 and 1980. During the 1980s,

she was the USPta National Hard court

Singles champion and was ranked No. 1 for

USPta. Susan competed on the Wita World

tour in 1973 and from 1980-87. She reached

the top 100 and played at Wimbledon, the

US Open, and the French Open qualifiers.

She was the USta 1985 Women’s 35 and

over National clay court Singles champion.

She is currently the Director of tennis and

contract Manager of al kruse Municipal

tennis center in corpus christi.

there are many famous quotes about “Winning.” the legendary

Green Bay Packers football coach, Vince Lombardi is credited with:

“Winning isn’t everything. it’s the only thing,” and “if winning isn’t

everything, why do they keep score?” among his other quotes.

another quote, not attributed to Lombardi, is “it isn’t whether you win

or lose it’s how you play the game.” and then, a humorous response

to that “Whoever said it’s not whether you win or lose, probably lost!”

But Lombardi’s one quote which is most accurate; “Winning is

not everything, but wanting to win is.”

that is the very essence of competition. We don’t really control

outcome. We control effort, intensity, focus, determination, decision-

making, desire, and many other components. But the actual result is

also very affected by our opponent’s efforts, a bit of luck, officials, the

weather, fate, and many other things out of our control. tennis players

all too often confuse winning, with playing to win.

Success in competition is most likely, especially in tennis, when

the player understands that the love of competition must far

outweigh the love of winning. the very

act of testing oneself against the best, of

doing battle with what may appear to be

a stronger adversary, and putting oneself

on the line to see how they measure up,

is the ultimate joy. the winning part,

which is often out of our control, is

secondary. How do most highly

competitive juniors respond to losing?

tears, frustration, anger, sorrow,

melancholy, depression, bitterness, or

any combination of all these. that’s easy

to understand. We all WaNt to win.

Learning to understand the benefits of

fighting to win, regardless of the

outcome, is the key.

We learn the MOSt when we lose.

Love of Competition Must Outweigh Love of Winning

that is a valuable motivator that many players are missing. as a

player, you will know when you are beginning to get a handle on this

when one day you finish a match, play well and lose, yet you feel good

about your effort. When that day comes, celebrate. you love

cOMPetiNG; regardless of the outcome. the ultimate paradox is that

because you have gotten to this higher understanding, you will win

more!

this brings me to the best quote, from rudyard kipling that

happens to be written at Wimbledon’s all england tennis club. it is

painted over the door that leads from the locker room to center court,

and is the last thing the player sees before going onto the battlefield.

“if you can meet with triumph and Disaster, and treat those two

imposters just the same.”

if you can compete with all you’ve got, win or lose …

it should be every player and every coach’s goal, to help the

player understand the difference between winning, and playing to win.

then, they can truly be, a “winner.”


Embrace Innovation

it was great having the opportunity to meet so many of our

wonderful members at the annual Meeting last month at the beautiful

Horseshoe Bay resort. congratulations to each of our award winners

for their generous service to the sport of tennis and the state of texas.

i always look forward to environments where so many like-minded and

passionate people are in attendance.

the ideas and energy that can flow through the meetings are

distinctive. the breadth of information and topics that were covered

during the annual Meeting are a testament to how significant our

association can be in the growth of our communities, not only in terms

of tennis programming but in the lives of its citizens.

i truly believe through tennis, we hold the key to unlocking so

much talent within our communities in numerous ways. Whether it be

a child who has never held a racquet and through a first experience

falls in love with the sport (for a lifetime), perhaps someone who is

returning to tennis as a means to regain the health and vitality they

once enjoyed, or tennis as a building of character because of the self-

discipline and overcoming of adversity it requires to reach higher

levels of success.

For those of us who love this sport, we have all experienced the

magic that is inherent in tennis. every person has a spirit of adventure

within them; it’s part of the human nature. How can we re-stir that

energy and that magic within ourselves, families, friends and those we

seek to serve?

there are any number of answers to that question which would be

appropriate, however, for now i’ll stick with one; in texas, we are

going to embrace innovation. We are going to try new concepts, we

are going to continue growing the countless core programs where we

are experiencing great success, and we are going to tap into the vast

creativity and strength that each of you individually and we as a group,

can deliver.

yes we are going to fail on occasion. if we can’t embrace the

possibility of setbacks then it will be difficult to achieve success in any

meaningful measure. But we will learn, improve and move forward.

So, how will we begin this process of transformation? the short

answer is quite simple, through a positive succession of days. More

on that to come …
