Measuring What Matters

Bill Landis Sherry Mitchell

How do you measure success? K-12 education is often guilty of measuring input rather than output. Do you report

numbers of devices, bandwidth, and feelings about technology (surveys) or do you report what is actually

happening in the classroom! LISD first determined what our strategic goal should be related to technology. Using

the SAMR model we measured the use of technology in classrooms. Find out what 6,000 observations told us

about the use of technology.

Jennifer Miller enjoyed hearing how Lubbock ISD reviewed the

technology utilization in their schools. You may wonder why they

decided to measure. They felt that without the why - the what and

the how do not matter. LISD mission is that LISD will embrace and

sustain modern technology tools and digital resources as a fully

integrated system to equip, prepare, and empower future ready

learners. They believed that the learners and instructors should be

using technology in the classroom and that technology should change

what we do in classrooms. During the last 2 school years, the team

has completed at least 3,000 observations each year.

have ben participating in the online training this spring. Betty Burks was

our facilitator and has more than 30 years of experience in public education.

She has served as a teacher, principal, and administrator in large urban,

suburban and rural districts throughout Texas. Most recently she served as

deputy superintendent for teaching and learning in San Antonio

Independent School District (SAISD). Before joining SAISD, Betty served as

Associate Executive Director of Instructional Support and Leadership

Development for the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA).

Jennifer Miller thoroughly enjoyed the final session

of this interactive workshop. The majority of our

leadership team has worked through the information

that ended with a 360O evaluative review from our

peers and team mates. This information provided
