    Statue of the PORTFOLIO

    It was the most devastating moment of my academic life. The story goes like this;

there was a guy who used to had a worse to save documents, projects, sketches, pic-

tures, drawings, paintings, virtual models, shots of physical models... and so many

more files been stored in a structured fash-ion. Unluckily, one day, during the harsh

time of semester end (5th year, semester-II, 2015G.C) and tight schedules of submis-

sion, almost 7 days away to end-up the semester, he lost all of his documents and

only have a laptop with empty hard-disk (HDD). So what can you say, sometimes technological innovations can terror an

Architecture student in to a Man of rem-iniscences of his/her past projects, thats

what happened to me. Anyways here I able to collect some fossils of my projects from friends and instructors to build this skeletal

    portfolio.

    ARCHi-SKELETON[Architecture + Structure]

1Unified architecture and structure for the realization of an adaptableArchitecture and sustainable built environment.

1 Of course all buildings and other related structures exist unifying architecture and structure. But here, the intention of using this word unifying means is to take the advantage of a structure beside its merely support, use the most out of it, in conceptualizing ideas and design philosophies, as architectural design language; to tell a story, to articulate something, to serve as functioning member, to define context, to emphasize things, to create timeless masterpiece and a fabric of architectural fashion, and to tell what the feature ahead of us beholds... in the built environment [buildings and other related structures] in a straightforward manner.

ACADEMIC WRITINGAcademic year: 6th yearTitle: ARCHi-SKELETONAuthor: Tesfay GebreyohannesAdvisor: Architect Ephrem Nigusse

1Archi-Skeleton strives to achieve the 2thoughtfulness of structure in employing within the design process, which is architecture from the be-ginning. Thus Archi-skeleton will define the role of integrating structure with architecture and using it beyond its supporting purpose; to tell a story, to articulate something, to serve as functioning member, to define context, and to tell what the feature ahead of us beholds in the built

    environment in a straightforward manner.

Structure, although is an architectural entity, which plays a dominant role in shaping the final and initial destiny of architecture. Since living in such technological era, the way of shaping our buildings, other related built-up structures, and the environment in general vastly diverge from place to place, and from country to country. Thus, the need for a well-developed and shaped environment within carefully crafted piece of ar-

chitecture has been of a paramount importance. Structure and architecture should have to blend seamlessly in complete harmony to realize a timeless architectural fashion.

This paper presents a chronological overview of the relationship between structure and architecture. It also traces current approaches em-ployed to conceptualize structure as design language in coherence with form and space. It concludes by proposing ideas to diminish the dearth

of integration between structure and architecture in Contemporary Ethiopian Architecture.

Key words: ARCHITECTURE, STRUCTURE, CONCEPTION, INTEGRATION, AIRPORT

1 Archi-Skeleton is the term coined by the author to represent the artfully integration of architecture and structure; Archi stands for Architecture and Skeleton stands for structure. Furthermore, it strives to create graceful buildings and built up environment, which able to strike a permanent pose due to the integration of ar-chitecture and structure in artfully manner, from the scratch to the realization process of Design. Such quality in Architecture makes it an everlasting fabric. However, this everlasting fabricness goes beyond merely aesthetic values of buildings. Within such everlasting buildings lies a structure giving its aesthetics an extended life and conveying a visual uniqueness to the building and the surrounding settings.2 Thoughtfulness [conception/conceptualizing]: architecture differs from construction by the assertion of subjectivity. The infinite of artistic practices inspires discov-ering methodologies outside the constructive region to cultivate an aesthetic and a relevant understood. via injecting itself into the economic and social flux, architec-ture must use the same tools as the system: it must manipulate signs, develop a story, and form a narration.

. . .Structure is columnar, planar, or a combination of these which a designer can intentionally use to reinforce or realize ideas. In this context, columns, walls and beams can be thought of in terms of concepts of frequency, pattern, simplicity, regularity, randomness and complexity. As such, structure can be used to define space, create units, articulate circulation, suggest movement, or develop composition and modulations. In this way, it becomes

inextricably linked to the very elements which create architecture, its quality and excitement.

(Clark, R. H. and Pause, M. (1985). Precedents in Architecture. Van Nostrand Reinhold, p. 3.)

Structure is a part of Archi-tectures DNA.

    CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

This project was demand a coordination of students in to a certain group to shape the campus to conceptual master plan level. Thus, the conceptual master plan composes: a general site plan layout, land use (zoning), street layout, open space layout (landscaping), building height with block mass to void ratio and the infrastructure layout (electricity, water and telephone). After that the detail design will blend to the individuals. Following this I was collaborated with Binyam Gebreeg-ziabher to produce the conceptual master plan of the campus.

The main intention of this project is to create a common space which binds and initiates the campus activities with the communities of the college and the outside societies. Since the main goal of this Campus is to train profession-als who can compute with the current issue of technology. Hence it focuses on practical learning process. So the stu-dents and the communities of the Campus should have to promote themselves to the societies. To do so they need a space which uses for exhibition, celebration, contemplation and other related events to perform with in the campus. Not only that but such spaces increase the social interac-tion of the communities and the student.

    CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

This project was a part of international workshop titled as THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY prepared by the collaboration of internationally known architectural firm CIGLER I MARANI UNLIMITED with Mekelle University, EiT-M, School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Our design intention is to shape the learning environment from ordinary method of teaching in to learning

through experience. Not only the teaching method, we also strive to shape the behaviors of the students at their early stage of acquiring knowledge. Unlike the current ordinary teaching process, learning should not have fixed on teacher and blackboard, instead we want to shape their way of acquiring knowledge within the built environment psychologically and physically. In addition to this, our design seeks a possible locally available techniques and methods to ensure sustainability, local workmanship and comfortable environment. To ensure those qualities our design emerged based on continuous experiments we carried out.

During the site visit we have seen that a school which is built from mud and Eucalyptus trees (locally called Bahir-Zaf). This might be a good practice; but it has its own negative impact on the environment, with the using of Eucalyptus trees as construction material. It initiates deforestation so that it doesnt celebrate the concept of sustainability. So having the idea of sustainability in our mind our group looks for a material which is sustainable. To find the exact material its mandatory to know the available materials in the site. Available materials; Clay soil type, Straw and Cactus.Based on the experiment we carried out we able to figure out different mud based bricks for different purposes according to the experimental output. Thus the experiment helps to specify the material for wall construction, plastering and main-tenance purposes.

Considering the site potential to accom-modate properly the desired programs.

Considering the site potential to incor-porate possible means of circulations.

Considering the design possibility to en-tertain the hierarchy of space and form.1 2 3 4 5

The intention of this project was to search any institution which functions in uncomfortable condition that founds within Mekelle city. And finally to come up with possible design solutions as an architect and urban designer. The institution I have chosen was Tigray College of ArtsI have chosen this institution because of the following problems. There was a mismatch be-tween existing space (volume and variety). It doesnt express the intended function rather it

looks something chaos. When I was explored through the compound I saw scattered buildings without pedestrian walkways, unrecognizable building orientation, notice boards installed at the edge of the buildings wall, dust bin installed on the branches of trees, only two public toilets on the main entrance of the institution, conference halls entirely built from corrugated iron sheet, untreated landscape with large trees though the trees are the main features of the institution.

My design intention is to create Inspirational spaces to the commu-nities. And I believe that an art should express the cultural aspects of the society. In my design I achieved this by providing public plaza type Transitional gallery space with cafe/restaurant and outdoor sitting to show the societies culture of gathering in a space and discussing about their daily lifes or something else. At the same time, I want to keep

the spirit of the entrance vegetation space throughout the building. I achieved this via providing green public spaces on the terraces of the building.Good public spaces should not be only consider about buildings form, aesthetic or something else. The focus must be on spaces between buildings, advanced the concept of urban plaza. Plaza, court spaces in

front of buildings are intermediate spaces between the street and the building. These urban spaces are a place to rest, sit, contemplate and relax. These public spaces also initiates the social interaction of the students between each other. Not only that the students can also paint, discuss, charm, study, and glimpse the landscape using these public spaces.

As its a building which dedicated to portrays the fine arts, its undeniable that the geometric config-uration (structure) will play a great role in evoking the spirit of uniqueness and everlasting elegance and adaptable architectural and structural aspects. Thus, my design seeks to deploy modular and artistic structural elements and overall configuration to made up the whole composition. Those structural elements adapt seemingly the form and space of the building. In addition, the structural

configuration is not punched only for the purpose of supporting. Instead the structural configura-tion and overall geometric configuration coexisted in harmonious rhythm which blends throughout the building, to tell story, to articulate the significant attributes of form and space and after all to help withstand the building profoundly within its urban fabric.

    PERSPECTIVES

    FLOOR PLANS

Corporate Military Technology Operation (CMTO) is the major unit under METEC organizing and leading the military industries. The construction of Aircraft Runway, Hangar and Offices at Dukem is one of the missions CMTO is undertaking. The project is to upgrade the existing base by providing a new additional base which is thought to serve as a training center for light, medium aircrafts and UVS. Though

the given site for the Building is too small in relative to the compound, it looks like a little dot when you placed on the site plan. In addition, this project was full of influ-ences from the client. Beside the building design I was also engaged in the site works. Like landscaping and placing the different blocks (Hangar, Fire Station, Administration Building) in appropriate way considering the runway and other related design factors.

The renovation of existing buildings, landscapes, Main entrances and fence designs and construction of the new Head quarter building complex aims to accommodate the progressive structure of the company.

The project is to upgrade the existing buildings and another elements by providing a

new treatments which is thought to serve as a training center, library and ware houses for the company.

    PERSPECTIVES

    PERSPECTIVES

Currently in the context of Addis Ababa, government office buildings are scattered everywhere in the city there is no well-defined government institutions center except for the few new trends like collecting group of offices together in the case of the new site in flamingo area. Organizing government offices in a cluster is one of the new strategies of the government due to many reasons. To provide good governance

including a fast service for users; by providing easily reachable and accessible offices.

Following this the Ministry Office requested a detailed architectural design of a 13 story building with two basements for theppa1/Sidist Kilo site.

The project is to upgrade/ construct state of the art general Hospital within given economic, social and environmental context. The specific objectives are: General Hospital that can entertain 1 million population in its catchment area and that can serve as sub referral for central zone and western zone cluster. A Hospital with consideration of contemporary health care facility design philosophy A general Hospital that can comply with Food Medicine and Health Care Administration and Control Authority (FMHACA) standards.

Being a Landmark to the area translating the socio-political, cultural and historical assets of the society. Being Human centered design Sustainable Hospital, in aspects of energy, waste treatment and environmental impact.

The architectural design competition announced for the new administration complex building of Ethiopian Institute of Technology Mekelle (EiT-M) Quiha Campus envisaged to accommodate a creative original design in accommodating all functions of a state-of-the-art administration complex. The competition is a single stage preliminary design level with submittal of scaled drawings, physical model 3d animation and a design report. The new building is expected to possess maximum flexibility in order to deal with changes that happen through time while responding to the current architectural trend and management demand. In addition to the functional and technological dimension, the project is also expected to achieve symbolic value for the institute as well as the city. So here we were engaged in producing the physical model with in allocated specific time schedule.
