Terrorist Groups - Thesaurus and Open Source Guide All entities in this thesaurus/open source resource guide have been designated as terrorist organizations by one or more of the following organizations: The US State Department, US Terrorist Exclusion List, UK Prescribed Group, Canada Specified Group, and the EU Specified Group. Certain groups may not be government designated but are deemed insurgent groups. Not all groups are currently active. The purpose of this document is to provide the analyst with a research tool that amalgamates all the different lists of terrorist groups’ official names, un-official names, and aliases into one document. The thesaurus component contains listings of preferred groups and non-preferred groups cross-referenced to the preferred groups. If there is a “mother-tongue” name equivalent to the group, it will be included in parenthesis. The terrorist group’s national area of operation and concentration is also indicated. Below the preferred group of the terrorist group in the thesaurus, there are listings of open source websites for reference and for obtaining additional information. The sources of information for this resource are: Air University Library: Terrorist and Insurgent Organizations (2003) http://www.au.af.mil/au/aul/bibs/tergps/tg98tc.htm Asia Terrorism Database (2005) http://www.afpc.org/td.shtml Centre for Defence Information (2005) http://www.cdi.org/program/index.cfm?programid=39 Council on Foreign Relations: Terrorist Groups (2004) http://www.terrorismanswers.com CRS Reports for Congress: Foreign Terrorist Organizations (2004) http://www.fas.org/irp/crs/RL32223.pdf FAS Intelligence Resource Program: Liberation Movements, Terrorist Organizations, Substance Cartels, and Other Para-State Entities http://www.fas.org/irp/world/para/index.html International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism: Terrorist Organizations (2003) http://www.ict.org.il/ MIPT Terrorism Knowledge Base (2005) http://www.tkb.org/Home.jsp Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada: Listed Entities (2002) http://www.psepc-sppcc.gc.ca/national_security/counter-terrorism/Entities_e.asp U.S. Department of Homeland Security: Terrorist Organization Reference Guide (2004) http://www.mipt.org/pdf/TerroristOrganizationReferenceGuide.pdf U.S. Department of State: Country Reports on Terrorism http://www.state.gov/s/ct/rls/c14812.htm
