NON NOBIS SOLUM
PRINCIPAL’SWORDSIt is my absolute pleasure to be back in the school where I started my teaching career more than two decades ago!
When I start to reflect on some of the changes that the school has seen over the past 25 years, there are certainly many significant differences. For starters, technology is a whole world apart from what it was in 1992. No ces were delivered on handwri en notes and le in pigeon holes – no such thing as an email! A far more common way to
get mul ple copies of a document was to get it run off on a gestetner. Some of you may recall inhaling the dis nc ve smell of the newly run off worksheets!
Looking at the wonderful new facili es in the school, I can’t help recalling the full school parades held in the sweltering Mareeba sun between D and E blocks. The then Principal, Mr Trevor Gordon, would stand up on the steps of D Block to deliver important school messages. What a difference the new shade structure will make to this area! And what a difference the fantas c school hall makes.
Our educa on system has advanced significantly in recent years with schools much more sophis cated in their use of effec ve teaching methodologies. Research now informs us as to what cons tutes best prac ce with explicit teaching and the use of consolida ons being forerunners in what makes a posi ve difference to student learning. Teachers also work much more collabora vely to get to know their students’ learning needs and to share successful strategies and resources. More than ever, teachers use student data to inform their teaching and track individual progress. No more coffee‐stained markbooks now though – it’s all on One School!
One of the things that has remained constant in all this change, is the wonderful Mareeba community. The diversity of students in our schools and the commitment of our community to successful educa onal outcomes for all our students makes this part of the world a great place to live and work. Finally, thank you MSHS staff and students, for the warm welcome this week.

Background: I started teaching in 2010 a er working 15 plus years in film, TV and theatre. I am P‐12 trained and have spent 4 years teaching primary (Years 5/6 predominantly) and 1 year in secondary (teaching Media Studies, Studio Art (2D & 3D) and Design & Technology). I have a background in design and photography (ongoing freelancer). I like to bring the art room into all aspects of the classroom when I can. I like to think I bring a lot of energy into the classroom by ins lling a sense of belief in the children and drawing on their sense of humour and understanding to encourage confidence and self‐awareness, empathy and a good work ethic.
