NAPLAN tes ng is being conducted in Bourke High School this week for our students

in Year 7 and Year 9. Data from NAPLAN tes ng provides staff with an important

snapshot of your child’s progress towards vital skills development in Literacy and

Numeracy and can be useful in informing future teaching prac ces from which your

child can only benefit.

During this week, like any other, it is important for your child to be prepared for each

day of tes ng. The first way for you to help ensure your child’s prepara on for any

school day is by making sure they have a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast. If

required, all students at Bourke High School have access to our breakfast club on a

daily basis.

On Thursday a ernoon as a reward for all of our students who have completed every

sec on of their NAPLAN tes ng we will be hos ng a circus performance from ‘Troppo

Bob’ who is touring through Bourke. The performance will provide a great

opportunity for students to relax a er a tes ng week.

Also on Thursday we are hos ng a Clontarf 3 on 3 basketball tournament with visi ng

Clontarf academies. The Clontarf academy is a valuable partner for our school and it

is always great to witness the posi ve rela onships our boys have developed with

Clontarf boys from different academies across the state.

Next week is our annual Saltbush visit where students from Ryde Secondary College

and The Forest High School come to Bourke for a taste of a different lifestyle and

educa onal se ng. Later in the year our students have the opportunity to recipro-

cate the visit. Speaking with students and staff from both sides of this exchange it is

obvious just how much they value the experience and we are once again looking

forward to an enjoyable week with our visitors. Adding to the exci ng events of next

week at Bourke High School is our much an cipated visit from Desert Pea media. The

renowned group will be working with our students and community members

throughout the week producing an industry quality hip-hop song and music video on

a relevant local issue.

One of the team members coming to Bourke is Carlos Santone who is an award-winning musician, songwriter

and mul instrumentalist from acclaimed Australian roots/reggae ou it Blue King Brown. This project repre-

sents one of the most powerful opportuni es for our students to share their voice with a na onal audience.

I need to remind all school community members that laser pointers are iden fied as a prohibited weapon in

Department of Educa on policy. This is obviously due to the poten al they have to cause serious harm and per-

manent damage to people if used irresponsibly. I appreciate your support in this message.

Year 12 Fundraiser

Year 12 will be holding a FUNDRAISER Bowls Night this Friday night from 6.30 pm. A BBQ will be

available at a small cost with all funds to support the Year 12 Formal.

Names can be le at the Bourke Bowling Club or at the school. Even if you haven't played bowls before

come down for a fun night.

Tickets can be purchased through the front office and Year 12 students.

On Friday 6th May Bourke High School female staff and students, relatives and members of the local

community gathered for two hours of bonding activities, team work and delightful food to celebrate sisterhood and Mother’s Day. The Multipurpose Centre was bursting with females of all ages, conversation and

a calm hum filled the air. Close to 160 ladies were present.

Throughout the afternoon, these women partook in a variety of activities. A ‘mingling activity’, ‘heads and tails’, the ever popular ‘bingo’, 5 rounds of ‘trivia’, a

'black, white and read fashion design challenge’ and an ‘instant talent quest’. This year a new ‘team yarn

bombing’ challenge was also added to the itinerary.

The production of the ‘work wear’ fashion ensemble showcased effective team work, initiative, creativity and time management. The modelling of their team

creations boosts self-confidence. Iona Smith, Nikyra Suckling and Briana Reed were judged the stand outs on

the afternoon.

The instant talent quest showcased such a variety of skills. Lanie Carroll took out the challenge with an

impressive a cappella song. Layci Bermingham’s ‘Old Time Rock and Roll’ dance performance was exciting.

And Andi Ibbotson’s acoustic guitar solo was inspiring. All contestants should be extremely proud of their

public, impromptu, on stage performances.

‘The Bourke Locals’ took out the knitted fabric/yarn bombing challenge. Tracey Rankmore’s arm knitting was an ingenious way to produce substantial fabric, quickly. It was pleasing to see some past knitters, Gaye Hoskins

and Karen O’Shannessy pick up their craft so swiftly after extensive absences.

A raffle was in operation and $388 was raised and will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The lucky winners this year were Leandra Lawson, Joan Dickson, Christie Milgate and Fiona Rankmore.

The lucky door prizes for the afternoon were won by Alice O’Shannessy, Robyn Gillon, Gwen Davis and Francis

Clark. The lucky seat prizes were won by Tracey Rankmore and Karen O’Shannessy.

A massive thank you must go to the huge number of female community members that attended the afternoon

your support of the afternoon is very humbling.

Thank you to Rob Bourke for allowing and encouraging the tradition to continue, John Pearce and Keith Turnbull for your table and chair assistance, Anna McCorkle for

your flower collection, yarn bombing expertise, photographing and Trivia Marking, Tracy Hull for your overall help throughout the day, ensuring all things ran smoothly and Anthony Heinmeyer and Ethan Smith for your flawless audio visual/tech skills, and lastly to the

group of staff, students and parents who helped pack up after the event, thank you!

Thank you, to the female students that attended and represented Bourke High School in such a positive

manner. Special mention must be made of the following female students- Year 12 Samantha O'Shannessy and

Teneka Fitzgerald, Year 10 Tori Williams, Georgia Hardwick and Shyanna Hudson, Year 9 Caitlin Warwick,

Molly Harris and Janaya Knight, Year 7 Robyn Gillon, Layshaye Dutton, Andi Ibbotson and Nikyra Suckling.

Their help decorating, setting up and running the afternoon was exceptional. These young ladies were

competent, self-sufficient workers and tremendous role models for Bourke High School and the wider Bourke

community. Their families should be extremely proud of these young ladies.

Thanks once again to Dot Brown and Alice O ’Shannessy for doing an exceptional job catering for the afternoon.

It could not happen without you both. This year, we sadly farewelled Alice from Bourke High School. Thank you for your time and efforts. We wish Alice all the

very best for the future.

Lastly thanks to Val Smith (my mum) and Gwen Hudson (my Aunty/God Mother) for their stunning hand made contributions towards the prize pool. Also to Berdine

Warne from Little Birdy, Di Lucus, Anna McCorkle, Betty Irvine (my Aunty) and Melissa Hopley (my sister) for

TACKLING VIOLENCE PROGRAM VISTS BOURKE HIGH SCHOOL

Former Rabbitoh’s superstar Nathan Merri and Tackling Violence Educator Ashlee Donohue visited Bourke High School on Thursday 5 May 2016 to deliver Tackling Violence educa on workshops to Stage 5 and 6 stu-dents. Tackling Violence is a NSW Government educa on and preven on program that has been delivered to over 40 rugby league clubs and high school across NSW. All seven clubs in the Barwon Darling Compe on will par ci-pate in the program in 2016.

Mother’s Day Special

Year 7 Science students were busily preparing little gifts for their Mums and Nans last week. The students became junior chemists and made bath bombs in class and packaged them up with a few special words ready for Sunday.

The students learnt that when baking soda and citric acid are mixed and are then put in water, they undergo a chemical reaction. The reaction produces lots of bubbles, which you see as the bath bomb dissolves in the water. These bubbles that make the water become so fizzy are made of carbon dioxide gas.

YEAR 8 LOTE visit Bourke Public School

Bourke High School Year 8 students presented Bourke Public School Kindergarten students with Dreamtime stories developed in Year 8 LOTE . Mrs Rowland and the stu-dents developed these stories during Term1 2016..

Thank you to Ms Pennell and Bourke Public School for allowing this group of budding authors with an opportunity to give their books to Kindy.

Bourke High School is putting on a French Food pop up restaurant

on Friday 17/6/16 starting from 6:30pm. There will be 10 tables of 6 people available with a full 3 course alternate menu. Bookings through the Front office of Bourke High School, all proceeds go towards the year 12 formal.

Incidental costs for parents/carers will be spending money for meals on the journey down and back, plus 'snacks' when students are on the snow.

Students will have to choose either skiing or snowboarding. Once an individual student has chosen it cannot be changed due to hire arrangements. Choices will not be made until Term 2.

If you would like your child/ren to attend the expression of interest form needs to be completed and a fifty dollar deposit for each child paid to the school. Reminder payment letters will be sent at regular intervals to interested families.

While this excursion will be part of our welfare rewards program, if there are too many students wanting to attend, in the first instance, priority will be given based on seniority. Thereafter, students will be selected on their Vivo points. A list of reserves will be kept.
