Term 1 Week 5 2020 NEWSLETTER Principal’s Report Open Night Our Open Night will be held on Thursday 26 March, and is an opportunity for parents with students looking at coming to our school in the future, and especially Year 7 2021, to see what makes our school such a great place to educate and extend our children. Details about start times etc. will be advertised closer to the date. Leadership Assembly This Friday 28th February, we are holding our leadership assembly, inducting our new SRC representatives and House Captains. Our guest speaker is Upper Lachlan Shire Council Mayor, John Stafford. Many thanks to Mr Whittle who has worked with staff to organise this assembly. I look forward to formally welcoming our student leaders. Year 7 and 9 Camps Each year our Year 7 and Year 9 students attend 3 day camps, designed to build their confidence, friendship and skills, as well as help in their transitioning from one learning stage to the next. We feel these camps are very important, and want to make them more accessible so all students can attend. In our budgeting for camps this year, we have managed to use some of the Equity Funds provided to the school to offset the cost of these two camps. This has meant around a 50% saving is passed on to parents compared to previous years. Our Year 7 Camp has already taken place with Year 9 having their camp later in the year. We will endeavour to maintain this funding in the following years to make sure all students have an opportunity to attend. Lions Youth of the Year Last week, Grace Abbey and Emily Secomb participated in the Lions Youth of the Year competition, held at the Crookwell RSL Club. Both students had to participate in interviews, delivering prepared speeches to an audience, as well as answering impromptu questions. Both students were outstanding ambassadors to our school and finished scoring very similar qualifying scores, with Grace moving forward to the next round to be held in Goulburn in the near future. Congratulations to both young ladies, and many thanks to the Lions Club of Crookwell for organising such a worthwhile competition. 1 Crown Street, Crookwell 2583 T: (02) 4832 1421 F: (02) 4832 1966 E: [email protected] W: www.crookwell-h.schools.nsw.edu.au Keep informed with our app! Leadership AssemblyThis Friday 28th February, we are holding our leadership assembly, inducting our new SRC representatives and House Captains. Our guest speaker is Upper Lachlan Shire Council Mayor, John Stafford. Many thanks to Mr Whittle who has worked with staff to organise this assembly. I look forward to formally welcoming our student leaders.

Year 7 and 9 CampsEach year our Year 7 and Year 9 students attend 3 day camps, designed to build their confidence, friendship and skills, as well as help in their transitioning from one learning stage to the next. We feel these camps are very important, and want to make them more accessible so all students can attend. GIRLS CRICKETThe Open Girls cricket team played a match against Goulburn High School at Todkill Park on Thursday 20 February. The girls played very well as a team and showed positive sportswomanship toward their competitors. The girls had to beat 109 runs achieved by the Goulburn players, and did this easily in 12 overs. Congratulations girls! The next match will be against Mulwaree High School in the coming weeks. Thank you to Blake McCarten, Joe Slater and Jack Searl for umpiring and scoring the match.

Principal’s Report ContinuedMentorsAt a recent school assembly, we recognised two groups of students displaying leadership outside of our school, through opportunities offered at school. Students involved in our very successful Tabletop Gaming program have been chosen as mentors by the external competition organisers because of their high level of skill andknowledge, and their ability to pass this on to others.

Students involved in our STEM program have worked with students from feeder primary schools, mentoring and supporting them in designing and building their STEM project. Congratulations to both groups of students and many thanks to our wonderful staff who find so many opportunities for our students to build their leadership skills.

FACULTY NEWSFood Technology

What’s Cooking in the Food Technology Room

The year has begun in the Food Technology room! Safety and Hygiene have been on the agenda with all junior classes. Hand washing is a focus, to ensure students are aware of the importance of thorough hand washing when handling ingredients and equipment.

Year 11 Hospitality entered scones into the High School competition of the Crookwell Show, and they came up winners! The boys in the class individually entered a senior competition - chocolate cake baked by a male. They scored a second place!

A commerical dishwasher is currently being installed into the school Food Technology room.Stand by for more photos once it is fully installed.Thank you to the school P&C for funding its purchase and installation.

Year 11 - A.L.A.R.M. Training

Year 11 has recently taken part in A.L.A.R.M training. A.L.A.R.M stands for “A Learning and Responding Matrix.” The training involves learning about how certain verbs (doing words) are givinginstructions about how much information and complexity is needed in responding to a question.

For example, if a question asks you to ‘define’ something, this is very simple, compared with ‘evaluating’ which is asking you to make a judgement based on your knowledge and understanding.

The A.L.A.R.M system works as a large table that students fill in as a method of building up an answer. As the system is quite complex, it can take some time for people who are new to A.L.A.R.M to develop a thorough understanding.

Students initially learnt to understand the verbs and were then put to task in some teams to play relay games, Jeopardy and Sale of the Century to show their understanding. The training of A.L.A.R.M is on-going with both the staff and students at Crookwell High School.

The training was conducted by Mrs Abbey and Mrs McCormack.

REMINDER

Year 7 Immunisations on Wednesday 4 March 2020

YOUR FORM NEEDS TO BE RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

It is important that your child eats breakfast, has a drink before school and remains calm on immunisation clinic days. Students can see Ms Bollen if they have any concerns. Our Year 10 Immunisation Angels will assist on the day, providing support and reassurance for nervous participants.

MATHS HELPMaths Help is an opportunity for all students to get some extra assistance with their Maths work. It is run every Thursday, in Room 8, straight after school until 4pm. Students are encouraged to come along and make the most of this relaxed learning environment to further their mathematical understanding. If you have any questions regarding Maths Help, please contact Rebecca Dark.

Year 7 Camp

Year 7 recently attended camp at Berry Sport and Recreation Centre. Heavy rain prior to camp did not dampen the students enthusiasm or willingness to get involved. The students participated in a range of challenging activities, designed to extend their comfort zone. They also undertook some team activities that required communication and problem solving. Over the 3 day camp, many new friendships were made. The Year 7 students were accompanied by Year 10 Peer Support Leaders, who helped get students ready on time for meals, activities and bed time. They were able to form caring and supportive relationships with the junior students. As Year Advisor I appreciated being able to get to know the students better in a setting outside school. I am looking forward to our year group continuing to bond and share meaningful experiences into the future.Michael DarkYear Advisor - Year 7
