Educating the butterflies of tomorrow?

During the Year 8 Camp in Melbourne last week, we went into the Butterfly House at the Melbourne Zoo. It was extraordinarily beautiful to have butterflies of all colours and sizes fluttering around and land-ing on us as we passed through this oasis of calm in a bustling city. This was not just a “fun activity” to be enjoyed as part of Camp (‘though we certainly had fun!) but one of many rich learning experi-ences where we tried to encourage students to engage with the world around them, to imagine the way things may have been or could be, to see things from new perspectives, to make connections, to accept challenges and to act differently as a result. We looked particularly at the impact of human beings on God’s creation, our responsibility to care for the environment and for other people, and how these issues can be viewed in the context of big cities.

This week, as we look at the photographs of the butterfly house during our poetry unit, we will consider the life cycle of a butterfly as a metaphor for the development of a person. What memories from the past, experi-ences, culture, family or physical conditions might affect each of us, making up our ‘cocoon’? Can we ‘break free’ from our cocoon? What are our hopes for the future? Are there any connections between these past experiences and our hopes? As a class, we will reflect on where our vision of the future comes from and what might be shaping it. Only then we will read poems like this:

Woman of the Future by Cathy Wary

I am a child. I am all the things of my past. I am all the freckles from my mother’s nose. I am the laziness of my dad Resting his eyes in front of the television. (continued)

And the wind in trees and telegraph wires. I am all I feel and taste. Soft and glossy mud on toes. Hairy insect legs Slippery camphor and laurel leaves The salty taste of fish and chips on my tongue And the watery melting on iceblocks. And all I remember. A veranda shaded by grape vines, Where I stepped off the edge and flew Like Superman. And waking up in the cold in a car where dad changed a tyre. And being lost in the zoo with my cousin. I am all I’ve been taught. ‘I’ before ‘E’ except after ‘C’. ‘Smoking is a health hazard.’ I am all I think. Secrets. Deep down inside me. I am all those things. I’m like a caterpillar And these things are my cocoon. But one day I’ll bite my way out And be free Because I’m the woman of the future.

We’ll ask ourselves questions like: What shaped this woman? Are they the same things that shape us? Can we leave everything behind and become a beautiful butterfly? Should that even be our aim? Can we just leave the past behind, or do some things need forgiveness or acceptance? Can we change ourselves, or do we need help? What kind of help? Where does my vision of the future come from? Would it take a different set of experiences to change my vision, or would a different vision shape the way I reflect on my experiences? As Christian educators, we take seriously our role in taking every opportunity to “teach” our students, not simply Literacy and Numeracy and Facts, important though they are, but to encourage and enable them to see the world from God’s perspective, where each person is valued by God so much that he sent his son Jesus, who died for them. This is a radically different worldview, where our universe was deliberately created, and where the Holy Spirit of God can live in each person who believes in Jesus, bringing true transformation from the inside. This transformation is what we as teachers have all found through faith in Jesus, and we believe that he is the source of true knowledge, maturity and wisdom. We appreci-ate the privilege that you entrust your children to us, to share with you in their education. We pray for them daily, and for our whole Sattler community of families, friends and staff, just like the Apostle Paul prayed for the Christians in Rome: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an of-fering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t be-come so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.“ (Romans 12:1-2) Mrs Elkington - Middle School Coordinator

WORKING BEE Saturday 14

th September

8.30am – 12pm Please let Kathleen know if you will be in attendance.

On Resilience - taken from www.parentingideas.com.au/Parents/Teenagers Resilience is a 21st Century parenting concept that every parent needs to understand. Some kids are resilient by nature – their temperament helps them to be mentally and psychologically tough. You know those kids. They get straight back up after a setback or disappointment. Rejection in the playground doesn’t faze them. Unfortunately, not every child has such natural resilience.

The good news is that most of the research shows that resilience can be nurtured and developed, particularly when parents themselves are resilient and they actively foster it in their kids.

Resilient kids share four basic skill sets- independence, problem-solving, optimism and social connection.

Building Resilience From a resilience perspective parents need to coach kids through some of their more challenging moments and reviewing what they may have learned for next time. Avoid solving all their problems for them.

You can promote a lasting sense of resilience in your kids by:

1. Having a positive attitude yourself. Your attitude as a parent impacts on their ability to bounce back from

some of the difficulties they face. Make sure you model a ‘you can do it’ attitude for your child when he meets some of life’s curve balls.

2. Look for teachable moments. Many kids’ learning opportunities are disguised as problems. Make the most of

these opportunities so that kids can grow and learn from some of the challenges they face.

3. Make kids active participants in the family. Active participation in a family develops the self-help, problem-

solving and independence skills of kids that are necessary for resilience. Build kids coping skills. There are plenty of strategies you can pass on to kids to help them cope when life doesn’t go their way, including acceptance, getting away for awhile, and normalisation. Promoting resilience in kids is a not a single event but a continuous process that requires adults to be supportive and empathetic when things don’t go their way. It also requires you as a parent to have an understanding of resili-ence, so you have faith in your yourself, and your child’s ability to cope.

Kakadu camp was the best experience of our life. On Monday we hopped on the bus and we were off to Kakadu. The first stop we went to was Windows on the Wetlands which was amazing. We saw a Buffalo. Then we drove to a boat cruise at Corroboree Billabong. There were animals everywhere and we spotted a giant salt water crocodile swimming past the Jabiru and Jacarna birds. Bowali

cultural Centre was our last stop before arriving in Jabiru where we stayed for our camp.

The following day we explored the East Alli-gator Region starting with the Bardedjilidji walk. As we walked to different parts and

read facts about the walk, we saw towering rocks and abo-riginal art in the caves- it was outstanding. Our next stop was the survivor challenge at Merl camp site. We all cooked lunch on the camp-fires and made a shelter in our groups. We ended up being covered in dirt and ash which was so much fun!

The next thing we did was traditional weaving with the Indige-nous ladies. It was amazing how fast the ladies split the panda-nus. Some of us were able to do it as well and after we dyed the leaves, we made a bracelet each. The Manngarre Rainforest walk was next before we went to Ubirr rock to watch the sunset over the wetlands. It was so amazing and so beautiful.

Wednesday morning arrived and as the door of the bus opened, we all scattered out to the amazing Nourlangie Rock. The ranger told some stories about the Aboriginal culture. It was a way different to ours’. After that we strolled down to Anbangbang Billabong and did an exhausting walk but we got to see the beautiful Jabirus, egrets, magpie geese and whistling ducks playing in the water.

We painted the billabong and Nourlangie Rock under the shade of some big trees. After that we spent some time at the Warradjan Cultural Centre before splashing in the awesome cold water pool where we played all different kinds of games. Then we headed off to Ranger Andy’s where we learnt more about Aboriginal Culture, Crocodiles and Buffalos and where the night sky was dark and the mosquitoes came out and were biting like Paranas!

On Thursday we all headed out to the park af-ter packing up all our stuff. We went to the lake and had some delicious pancakes and the headed back to school! Camp was amazing. We learnt so much about the environment and cul-ture of Kakadu.

We reckon this was the best camp ever and wish we could do it all over again!

During Week

5 of this term,

Year 3/4

students

began their 2

day camp to

the Territory

Wildlife Park.

After a quick nature walk and

lunch at Berry Springs Nature Re-

serve we drove to our main desti-

nation - The Territory Wildlife Park.

Setting up tents became a race to

finish when a rain shower caught

us by surprise! Students sheltered

in their tents and were most excit-

ed by this event. It was wonderful

to see the team work that occurred

during tent set up and pack down

at the end of camp. It is a time to think about others and to work together to-

wards an end goal.

After dinner at the campsite,

students participated in a

'Bush Tucker, Tools and

Medicine' night program, run

by the staff for the Territory

Wildlife Park. This is a unique

look into the flora and fauna of

the park at night. Students

marvelled at the nocturnal

animals and a huge variety of

plant life in the park.

The guide described many ways in which indigenous people used to and still do

use our flora and fauna to live.

The next morning after breakfast and

pack up, students broke into small

groups to explore the park. They

planned out which enclosures to visit

and used their mapping skills to plot

out a path around the park.

The Year 3/4 camp was a wonderful

experience for both new and seasoned

campers. The students developed their

friendships further, showed responsibility

and trustworthiness. I was extremely

proud to see Sattler students encourag-

ing, helping and assisting one another

when a need was there. We saw a lot,

learned a lot and now have many happy

memories!

A huge thanks to our amazing volunteer

parents who took time out of their busy

schedules to assist on camp.

The variety and depth of

activities greatly changes when you

have many hands to help. Thank you!

In Week 6 the year 6/7 students packed up their tents and belongings and headed out to the Junior Police Ranger Campsite on the Arnhem Highway.

After a morning setting up tents and exploring the flora and fauna of the site they bravely hiked along the tree lined lake, spotting white bellied eagles and fresh water crocodiles, to the Adventure Bound Activities Centre.

Over the week students were pushed to face

their fears, work together, encourage and support their team mates in a challenging range of activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, Flying fox, high ropes, low ropes and other team activities.

A bike ride through the beautiful countryside and up to the lookout over the plains provided opportunity for fun and reflection at the end of the camp.

This year students were able to put their food technology skills into action, sharing rotations of food preparation and clean up – this provided a great opportunity for students to serve each other and grow closer in community. No one went hungry and the food was fantastic.

Students also participated in bush

art, first aid training and group

building games back at camp, under

the guidance of Mr B and

Mrs Broad.

The evening program provided the opportunity for

students to enjoy the each others company through

large outside games, night walks, camp concert and

a campfire night.

Natalie, Daniella, Taylah, Claire, Maya, Jesse, Michael, Chris and Jordan took off very early last Monday to learn about city life in Melbourne with Mr Long and Mrs Elkington. After several hours on the plane, they reached

Mt Evelyn Christian School in Lilydale, on the outskirts of Melbourne: home for the next week! After that, it was time for an overview of part of the huge city of Melbourne from a nearby lookout. What are the advantages of hav-ing cities? What problems can arise? What impact does city living have on the inhabitants and on the environ-ment? These questions and more were raised, ready to be considered during the week.

On Tuesday, there was a trip to the Zoo and the in-door Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, two facili-ties available to those who live in a large city. Dinner at Mr Smith’s house was a wonderful surprise!

Wednesday and Thursday involved venturing further into the heart of the city via different types of public transport: art gal-leries, museums, the Imax Theatre, street art and sculp-tures, public buildings and memorials such as The Shrine of Remembrance, cathe-drals and cafes. City liv-ing offers many opportu-nities in the areas of edu-cation, the arts, sporting facilities and shopping.

Of course, the negative impact of city life was also seen: traffic congestion; overconsumption of resources and ma-terial possessions; crime and drug addiction; the ease with which people on the margins of society (e.g. the

poor, the disabled, the mentally ill) could be drawn to the city and then forgotten; the pos-sible lack of sense of community and rela-tionships despite the number of people nearby…)

One of the highlights (and it was certainly HIGH! and they saw many LIGHTS!) was the Eureka Tower, and The Edge experi-ence, where everyone enjoyed the dusk and nightfall from 88 floors above the city! Instead of the unfamiliar vista of the first night, students could recognise many of the places they had visited: landmarks, precincts, cathedrals, arterial roads, mountain ranges and public transport links. Of course, cities do provide a plethora of stylish cafes and specialty eateries, where a whole shop could be devoted to

one type of food... such as CHOCOLATE….! Finally, Friday was spent ‘escaping from the city’ in the Dandenong Rang-es, where Mel-bourne residents often go on week-ends to walk in the bush, feed wild

birds, enjoy tea and shopping, and ride on the “Puffing Billy” steam train.

In the evening, students saw a live performance of “The Light in the Piazza”, (an original Broadway musical) at the historic theatre in Lilydale where Dame Nellie Melba sang (she viewed Lilydale as her home, and is buried there). Again, theatre is one of the many oppor-tunities offered in a city context. After packing up and flying home on Saturday afternoon, Year 8 will be completing their Melbourne booklets this week (students worked on their booklets several times a day, which involved reflection, in-vestigation, key focus area specialisation and knowledge quizzes). Thanks go to everyone involved in organising the camp, particularly

Mr Long and his daughters and sons-in-law in Melbourne, Mr and

Mrs Smith, and Mount Evelyn Christian School, for providing accommodation, a minivan, rock

-climbing and meals: without them, this camp would simply be out of reach for our students.

Thanks also go to our students, who were a credit to the

school and their families, and were a great group of people

to spend time with. We thank God for safety and a rich

learning experience, and we pray that this experience will

have enriched relationships, enabled students to feel confi-

dent visiting or living in the city in the future, and enhanced

their appreciation of God and others. – Roz Elkington
