>> Back it upLast season, defensive back Steven Godbolt III led all of FCS in inter-ceptions with six. His performance earned him All-American honors by four publications and is already on several Player of the Year Watch Lists. The pressure of the microscope will be on the now redshirt junior this year to see if he can duplicate his performance. Fortunately for Godbolt, teams will not have the luxury of throwing away from him as TSU returns all of its secondary from a year ago. The Tigers also bring in former Florida Gator De’Ante “Pop” Saunders to play at the other cornerback spot. In one season at Gainesville, Saunders made nine starts, had 26 tackles, picked off two passes, forced and recovered a fumble. TSU has had success with University of Florida players (see All-American A.C. Leonard), so expect the OVC’s top-ranked pass defense to be even better in 2013.

>> After-WardTennessee State will have to replace All-OVC running back Trabis Ward who left the school following his junior season. All Ward did last year was lead the conference in rushing attempts (309) yards (1,422) and touchdowns (15). By adding his 21 receptions and rushing attempts, Ward had the ball in his hands for 40 percent of TSU’s 818 plays. Matching Ward’s production might be difficult for one player to do, so the team will likely turn to both Telvin Hooks and Adam Davenport to carry the load. Hooks rushed 75 times last year for 425 yards for an astounding 5.7 yards per carry average. The Edgewater, Fla. product also had a pair of touchdowns as a redshirt freshman. Hooks will primarily be TSU’s speed back while Davenport will bring the power. 2013 will be Davenport’s first year at Tennessee State after transferring from the Naval Academy. He didn’t see any game action for the Midshipmen, but his Tiger teammates commonly refer to him as “Tebow” because of his down-field running style.

>> Defense Downs the RattlersOn Sept. 7, the TSU defense suffocated the Rattlers of Florida A&M on the road. The TSU defense held FAMU to just 156 yards of total offense, 22 rushing yards on 24 carries, forced two turnovers-with one being returned for a touchdown- and the Rattlers were 2-of-12 on third down conversions. FAMU only had the ball for 7:26 during the second half. TSU is 1st nationally, in total defense.

>> Our Team is Becoming More SpecialTennessee State has showed marked improvement in its special teams play this season- especially in the return game. Last year, the Tigers averaged 19.1 yards per kickoff return. This year, TSU has already scored a touchdown- a 95-yard return by redshirt junior Martin Ste-venson at FAMU.

>> That Was OffensiveAfter only averaging 310.7 yards of total offense and 124.7 yards per game passing coming into the game at Tennessee Tech, the Tigers offense exploded in Cookeville. The TSU offense set season highs in total yards (438), passing yards (343) and points (41) on the way to the first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season. A.C. Leonard caught five passes for a career-high 122 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Michael German finished 8-of-14 for 204 yards and three touchdowns and Lavaitae Kelly had a game-high six grabs for a ca-reer-high 95 yards.

>> Godfrey’s GoalSenior Jamin Godfrey has been one of the best kickers in school his-tory and is quickly approaching some of TSU’s records. With his eight points against Southeast, Godfrey now has 275 points for his career. He is 31 points away from tying Alfred Reese for first on the school’s all-time scoring list.

>> It’s Been Such a Long TimeTSU got great production from all three units in the 27-7 win at FAMU on Sept. 7. David Van Dyke had a pick six for TSU’s first defensive touchdown since Sept. 8 of 2012 when Daniel Fitzpatrick scooped up a fumble and scored against Jackson State. Martine Ste-venson also returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the first time since Weldon Garlington’s 100-yard return on Oct. 1, 2011 versus Austin Peay. Tim Broughton scored TSU’s first rushing touchdown since Nov. 12 of last year. The last time that TSU had a score on offense, defense and special teams was the 2008 season-opener against Alabama A&M.

>> Taking the Ball and Going HomeIn the Southern Heritage Classic on Sept. 14, the Tennessee State de-fense forced six Jackson State turnovers and even took an interception to the house for a touchdown. Stephen Godbolt III picked off a pass and Nick Thrasher forced a fumble during the first quarter, Andrew Taylor and De’Ante Saunders both had interceptions in the second and Daniel Fitzpatrick and David Van Dyke stepped in front of passes in the fourth. Fitzpatrick returned his 50 yards for a touchdown and Van Dyke’s was his third in as many games. The last time TSU forced six or more turnovers was Oct. 13, 2005 against Tennessee Tech when the Tigers forced seven.

>> The Weekly Van Dyke ShowWeek in and week out, senior safety David Van Dyke has come up big for the Tigers. The Miami, Fla. native recorded an interception in each of TSU’s first four contests. Van Dyke’s four picks tied him for the FCS lead with North Carolina Central’s freshman corner Michael Jones during his impressive run.

>> Super SamquanJunior defensive tackle Samquan Evans had himslef a great week in TSU’s 41-21 victory at Tennessee Tech. The Walkertown, N.C. native paced the TSU defense, setting a personal-best with eight stops and added 2.5 tackles for loss and forced a fumble. His play earned him OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

>> OUCH!The Tigers pounded the Marauders into submission on Sept. 28, defeating them, 63-7. The Tigers tallied a season-high 539 yards in the rout, including 311 yards on the ground. TSU’s 539 yards were the most for the team since its 76-0 drubbing of UT Martin on Oct. 24, 1998. CSU, meanwhile, only managed 180 yards, the second fewest yards TSU has allowed all year. Tennessee State scored touchdowns on 10 of its 13 possessions and its longest drive lasted a mere 4:08.

>> Going StreakingTennessee State had two interceptions against Southeast and the team now has quite a streak going. TSU has recorded at least one turnover in the past 20 contests dating back to 2011. Big Blue currently ranks 6th in the Football Championship Subdivision in takeaways with 18.

>> It’s All German to MeRedshirt junior quarterback Mike German was forced to miss the first two games of the season due to suspension. In his return against Jack-son State, he was a rusty 4-of-14 for 42 yards and zero touchdowns. In the four contests since then, he has completed 41-of-64 passes for a completion percentage of 64.1. He has gained a total of 683 yards and thrown for 11 touchdowns without an interception. The offense has averaged 467 yards of total offense in the last four games.

>> Leonard Gets an A+Junior tight end A.C. Leonard has been hot as of late and has caught at least three passes in six of TSU’s first seven contests. At Tennessee Tech, the Jacksonville, Fla. native posted one of his finest games as a Tiger, hauling in five balls for a career-high 122 yards. He also added a pair of touchdowns against the Golden Eagles. Leonard leads the team by a wide margin with 27 receptions on the season and his 378 yards are tops on the squad as well. Leonard leads the teams with 5 receiv-ing touchdowns.

>> What Does it Take to be No. 1?On Sept. 25, the Tennessee State football team came out on top for the first time this season in the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) Division I FCS HBCU poll. The Tigers were tied for second coming into the weekend, but a TSU victory at Tennessee Tech, a loss by Bethune-Cookman and an off week for North Carolina A&T vaulted Big Blue to the top spot.

>> The Butler Did itTennessee State quarterback Ronald Butler was named to the 2013 National Freshman Performer of the Year Watch List on Oct. 3, by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). Butler joins 31 other freshman on the “rough guide, highlighting freshmen whose perfor-mances merit recognition,” according to the CFPA. The media outlet goes on to say that “freshmen are not preemptively eliminated from consideration, and all players are eligible for weekly, annual, and ca-reer awards at their respective positions”. Butler has started five games for the Tigers this season.

>> They ARE WorthyThe Black College Football Hall of Fame announced that legendary Tennessee State football coach Joe Gilliam, Sr. and defensive end Ricahrd Dent are among the 25 finalists that will be on the ballot for the fifth annual enshrinement. The list includes 20 players, five coach-es, and five contributors.

>> Tigers Predicted Third in OVCThe Tennessee State football team was picked to finish third in the Ohio Valley Conference at Media Day. The Tigers received a pair of first-place votes and 90 total points in the 2013 poll which is a vote of league head coaches and sports information directors. The Tigers’ preseason ranking is the highest for the team since the 2002 season.TSU got more good news when redshirt junior cornerback Steven Godbolt III was selected as the conference’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, Godbolt ranked first nationally in interception per game (0.60), and hauled in six picks to go along with 45 tackles and six pass break ups.

Last Time We Met...

Tennessee State: 26UT Martin: 35MARTIN, TENN. - A three touchdown fourth quarter got Tennessee State back into the game at UT Martin, but the Tigers comeback just fell short in the final game of the season as they lost to the Skyhawks 35-26 on Saturday.

Trailing 28-6 heading into the fourth quarter, TSU (8-3, 4-3 OVC) scored touchdowns on its first three possessions of the quarter and was a two-point con-version away from tying the game.

It all started when Vernon Frett blocked a 44-yard field goal that was returned to the TSU 38 by Greg Barksdale. Michael German hit A.C. Leonard on the next play for a touchdown to cut the Skyhawks lead to 15.

German finished with career-highs with 28 completions, 44 attempts and 355 yards, along with three touchdowns.

TSU turned UT Martin (8-3, 6-2 OVC) over on downs when they couldn’t convert a fourth-and-27 on the TSU 34. The Tigers took advantage going 66 yards on seven plays in just 1:36. Joe Bowens caught a German pass from four yards out as UTM led 28-20 with 6:42 remain-ing.

The Tiger defense forced a three-and-out to put the ball right back in the hands of its red hot offense. German extended the eventual scoring drive running for 10 yards on a fourth-and-four. Leonard grabbed his second score of the game from German in the right side of the end zone from four yards out.

Leonard had seven catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the season with 51 catches for a team best 733 yards (the most for a FCS tight end) and six touchdowns.

With TSU needing to go for two trailing 28-26 with two minutes left, German

was sacked. UTM recovered the onside kick and had the ball at the TSU 41 with 1:55 left and the Tigers only having one timeout remaining. The Skyhawks had an illegal block penalty and a run out-of-bounds to stop the clock twice. It came down to a fourth-and-two with just over a minute left.

The Skyhawks elected to go for it and it paid off as quarterback Derek Carr threw a 33-yard touchdown to Quentin Sims, their third scoring hookup of the game, to put the Tigers away 35-26.

Carr finished 21-for-40 with three touch-downs and an interception. Sims had eight catches for a game best 176 yards and three scores.

The Tigers first possession of the game ended with a 10-yard Jamin Godfrey punt that was shanked to the left, out of bounds at the Martin 32-yard line. The Skyhawks scored the very next play as Carr found Quentin Sims for the 7-0 lead.

Carr and Sims had similar results less than four minutes later as the senior connected for a 50-yard score as Sims streaked up the right sideline for the two touchdown advantage midway through the first quarter.

On its third possession, the Tigers finally got the offense rolling as three straight third down conversions resulted in a 29-yard field goal from Godfrey. Trabis Ward had two of the third down conversions rushing for 20 yards on a third-and-seven at the UTM 43 and for nine yards on a third-and-eight at the UTM 21. Ward had 106 yards on 24 carries.

With 8:01 remaining in the first half, Jason McNair extend-ed the Skyhawks lead to 21-3 with a 75-yard punt return.

TSU responded with three straight completions to Travis James for 32 total yards, before a Leonard six-yard reception ended with a fumble caused by Julius McNair at the UTM 18.

James had a game-high nine catches for 139 yards.

UTM turned the ball over on its next pos-session as Ronn Vinson caught a floater from Carr at the UTM 43 and returned it 18 yards. The Tigers couldn’t punch it in the end zone and settled for another God-frey field goal, this one from 22 yards out to go into the locker room down 21-6.

German found James in the middle of the field for a 68-yard reception down to the UTM 17 on the first play of the second half. The drive ended on a missed God-frey field goal from the 29-yard line that was wide left.

A German interception late in the third quarter gave the Skyhawks a short field at the TSU 36 and set up their fourth touch-down on the day, a one-yard run from D.J. McNeil, to put UTM up 28-6 with 2:47 left in the third quarter.

The eight wins for Tennessee State are the most since finishing 8-4 during the 2008 season. The last time TSU won more than eight games in an 11 game regular season was 1999.

REEDHEAD COACH

4TH YEAR, TENNESSEE STATE ‘88

ROD

Rod Reed enters his fourth sea-son at the helm of the Tennessee State football program, having just turned in his finest season in 2012. The Tigers finished 8-3 last year and Reed has now improved his club’s win total by at least two in each of his three campaigns.

He was named head coach on December 18, 2009 to guide the TSU program. He served as the associate head coach and defen-sive coordinator during the 2009 season.

He began coaching at TSU in 2003 and served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. At the conclusion of the season in which Reed returned to the TSU sideline, the Tigers led the OVC in total defense for the first time in school history. The defense accomplished the same feat in 2008 finishing at the top of the OVC in total defense. A keen recruiter, Reed is re-sponsible for bringing several notable key players into the TSU program. Reed is noted for recruiting Javarris Williams (2009 seven-round draft pick, Kansas City Chiefs), Dominique

Rodgers-Cromartie (2008 first-round draft pick, Arizona Cardi-nals), Shaun Richardson, Lamar Divens (Baltimore Ravens, 2008) and Corneilus Lewis. He has also coached All-America and pro-fessional player, Jamie Landrom (Jacksonville Jaguars).

Reed was a four-year letter winner for the TSU Tigers from 1984 - 1988. He capped off his career by being named Sheridan All-America his senior season. He set the Tiger record for career tackles from his linebacker slot and in 1987, he set the single season record for tackles with 197. He helped lead the Tigers to the second round of the 1986 Division I-AA playoffs and was selected as Defensive MVP in 1987 and 1988.

Following completion of his bachelor’s degree, Reed entered the coaching profession. He held positions at Prairie View A&M, Bethune-Cookman University (formerly Bethune-Cookman College), and Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, Fla. He has coached five first-team all-conference linebackers and a pair of All-Americans.

A veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks, Reed previously coached at East Texas Baptist College in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He served as defensive coordinator for East Texas Baptist, which launched its football program during the 2000 season.

The 2002 Texas Baptist defense ranked second in their confer-ence in scoring defense and third in rushing defense. The team did not allow points in either the first or third periods through the first eight games in 2002.

Reed is the son of Robert Reed, Jr., an All-America offensive guard for the Tigers in 1963 and 1964 who later played profes-sionally for the Washington Redskins.

Reed is the university’s Fel-lowship of Christian Athletes representative and in 2009 he participated in the NCAA Foot-ball Coaches Academy. He and his wife, Tamika, are the parents of four children, Terry, Takara, Briah, and Marcel.
