Let’s Settle it The Vote to Return to Hale Stadium

Tennessee State University announced that beginning Friday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. the University would take a vote to determine if TSU football will return to Hale Stadium for the 2012 season.

President Portia H. Shields announced the launch of a new campaign in which alumni, friends and the TSU commu-nity can vote by text if they believe the Tigers should return to the “Hole” for the first time in more than a dozen years during the University’s Centennial Celebration next year.

“This is something that alumni and current students have asked us to do and we are going to look into the possibility of returning Tiger football to the tradition of Hale Stadium,” said Dr. Shields. “With our Centennial celebration taking place next year, we thought it was worth the effort of looking into the possibility of returning to the ‘Hole’ and allow-ing our current students and alumni the opportunity to experience football at home.”

“Let’s Settle It!” will allow voters to text their feelings and votes, whether for or against returning to Hale Stadium. Text HaleYeah if they for returning, or HaleNOPE if against. Anyone can vote for $10, which goes toward student scholarships. Voting begins Friday, October 7 and runs until November 12 with the majority winning, according to Dr. Shields.

“If the vote on going back to the Hole is no, I’m going to call my alumni and say, ‘Where were you?’” Dr. Shields told reporters jokingly.

If the Tigers were allowed to return to Hale Stadium next year by the Nashville Sports Authority, they would still play their homecoming and John Merritt Classic at LP Field. Money already in the university’s budget would be used for $1.5 million in renovations necessary to get the stadium ready for fans. Renovations would include demolishing the old ROTC building, paint and structural repair to the stadium, temporary restrooms and concessions and renting ad-ditional grandstand seating.

Hale stadium was built in 1953 and has a capacity of approximately 10,000. Tennessee State University went unde-feated 10 times, won 10 championships in what used to be the Midwest Conference, and where the Tigers claimed the Ohio Valley Conference championship in 1998, the last season football was played in the stadium. In 1999 TSU moved to LP Field.

Head Coach - Rod ReedRod Reed was named the 22nd TSU Football head coach on De-cember 18, 2009. He served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator during the 2009 season.

He began coaching at TSU in 2003 and served as the defen-sive coordinator and linebackers coach. At the conclusion of the season in which Reed returned to the TSU sideline, the Tigers led the OVC in total defense for the first time in school history. The defense accomplished the same feat in 2008 finishing at the top of the OVC in total de-fense. Reed spent five of his sev-en years in his assistant role as defensive coordinator. A keen recruiter, Reed is re-sponsible for bringing several notable key players into the TSU program. Reed is noted for recruiting Javarris Williams (2009 seventh-round draft pick, Kansas City Chiefs), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (2008 first-round draft pick, Arizona Cardi-nals), Shaun Richardson, Lamar Divens (Baltimore Ravens, 2008) and All-American Corneilus Lewis. He has also coached All-America and professional play-er, Jamal Landrom (Jacksonville Jaguars). Reed was a four-year letter win-ner for the TSU Tigers from 1984 - 1988. He capped off his career by being named Sheridan All-America his senior season.

He set the Tiger record for ca-reer tackles from his linebacker

slot and in 1987, he set the single season record for tackles with 197. He helped lead the Tigers to the second round of the 1986 Division I-AA playoffs and was selected as Defensive MVP in 1987 and 1988.

Following completion of his bach-elor’s degree, Reed entered the coaching profession. He held positions at Prairie View A&M, Bethune-Cookman University (formerly Bethune-Cookman Col-lege), and Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, Fla. He has coached a total of five first-team all-conference linebackers and a pair of All-Americans.

A veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks, Reed previously coached at East Texas Baptist College in his hometown of Marshall, Texas.

He served as defensive coordinator for East Texas Baptist, which launched its football program during the 2000 sea-son. The 2002 Texas Baptist defense ranked second in their conference in scoring defense and third in rushing defense.

The team did not allow points in the first or third periods through the first eight games in 2002.

Coach Reed is the son of the late Robert Reed, Jr., an All-America of-fensive guard for the Tigers in 1963 and 1964 who later played profes-sionally for the Washington Red-skins.

Reed is the university’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes representative and in 2009 he participated in the NCAA Football Coaches Academy. He and his wife, Tamika, are the par-ents of four children, Terry, Takara, Briah, and Marcel.

REED’S Player Profile

Saturday, November 5 @Austin Peay 40, Central State 0@Southeast Missouri 55, Central Methodist 44*Murray State 38, @#15 Tennessee Tech 37*Tennessee State 18, @Eastern Illinois 17*Eastern Kentucky 52, @#18 Jacksonville State 48@Mississippi State 55, UT Martin 17

A Tennessee Tech 38-37 loss to Murray State on a missed extra point with 2:05 to play, plus an offensive explosion that saw Eastern Kentucky score 28 fourth quarter points in just 5:20 of action to overcome a 24-point deficit and top Jacksonville State 52-48, has put EKU on top ofthe OVC standings (5-1) with two weeks to play...The Colonels are just one game ahead of three teams, including Tennessee Tech and UTMartin, the two teams EKU plays over the next two weeks...If EKU wins out it will claim its record 21st OVC Championship and play in its20th NCAA playoffs (the second most all-time)...A loss in either of its final two games and it is possible the OVC race finishes in a three-way tie (the winner of the EKU/TTU game would have a favorable advantage in several of the most likely multi-team tiebreaker scenarios)...Justtwice in OVC history (1962 and 2009) has the OVC Champion finished the season with two Conference losses...With its fifth-straight win on Saturday, Eastern Kentucky moved into the Top 25 poll (No. 25, Sports Network), its first national ranking since Oct. 19, 2009...EKU QB T.J.Pryor was named National Offensive Player of the Week by the College Sporting News after throwing for a school-record five touchdowns in a dramatic 52-48 victory...Eastern Kentucky junior running back Matt Denham rushed for 209 yards against JSU, his third-straight 200-plusyard game and the fourth time in the last five games he has reached that mark; Denham is first nationally (FCS) in 200-plus yard games this season (4) and is the first OVC running back in the last decade to have four 200-plus yard games in the same season...Overall Denhamhas five-straight games with 100-plus yards, the first time that has happened in OVC play since 2007 (UTM’s Don Chapman)...Murray Statesenior Kienan Cullen converted his 53rd career field goal in the second quarter at Tennessee Tech, giving him the OVC career field goal mark outright; Cullen passed MTSU’s Kelly Potter (1981-84) who had held the record for 17 years...Saturday’s Eastern Kentucky/Tennessee Techgame is the most key matchup this week, with EKU being No. 25 and TTU being No. 20 (FCS Coaches poll) in the national polls; if TTU winsits final two games, it would win any tiebreaker and earn the league’s automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs...In other action on Saturday Austin Peay visits Murray State, Jacksonville State is at Southeast Missouri and UT Martin is at Tennessee State...In non-conference action EasternIllinois coach Bob Spoo finishes out his 25-year career as head coach when the Panthers play at Southern Illinois.
