Pastor’s noteCome to the watersLake Pend Oreille surrounds the small town of Sandpoint, Idaho. Last summer my brother organized the rental of a house near the lake just down the road from Sandpoint. We had been to Big Bear Lake a few times when the kids were toddlers, but this was the first time since they had been older that our kids had experienced hanging out by a lake in the summer. They loved it! From jumping off the dock, to riding paddleboards, and rowing in the boat—they spent as much time as they could either on, or in, the water. It was fun to see them enjoying the lake and it brought back many great memories my brother and I had around lakes when we were growing up.

I bet that if I asked about a favorite summer memory you have, many of you would share a story about a time by a lake or near a river. There is something special about being near the water. There is something refreshing about jumping into the coolness of a lake or river. There is something spiritual about watching the sun set over the tiny ripples caused by an evening breeze.

It is no accident then, that rivers and lakes play an important part of Scripture. There are many stories where God encounters people by a body of water, whether it be the

Gift cards for host families requested by Synod Justice TeamWe now have five Central American refugees families—formerly separated from children who were taken from them at the border—who are staying with host families in the Los Angeles area. These families are waiting for their asylum requests to be processed. We desperately need gift cards from grocery stores such as Ralphs, Vons, Trader Joe's, and/or CVS gift cards to help host families pay for food and essentials. The refugee families can not work until they get their work permits in six months or so.

If you are moved to help, please deliver your gift cards to Kathleen Sands in the church office, Miriam Nakayama at the fair trade table on selected Sunday mornings, or to Sheri Groenveld or Dixie Hanson. We will mail cards periodically and securely to the synod office.

May 26 The California Innocence Project and Criminal Justice Reform Led by Summer Shafer Join us for a discussion about the California Innocence Project that works to free the wrongfully convicted. Hear about some of its most interesting cases, from the Brian Banks story, which has recently been made into a movie that is entering theaters this summer, to the Horace Roberts story, a recent exoneration of a man who was in prison for 20 years for a crime he did not commit.

Gain insight into the quirks of the organization, how science plays a role in post-conviction work, what issues the criminal justice system faces, and how we can all make a difference.

Summer Shafer is a second-year law student at California Western School of Law in San Diego. Her passion for the law led to work for Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, the Public Defender’s Office, and the United States Student Association. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science: Law and Society at the University of California Riverside. During her time there, she fought along with students on a state-wide and national level against de-funding education and the student-to-prison pipeline. Through these experiences she saw how the justice system worked first hand, and was inspired to fight for those who have faced adversity in that system. Currently she works with the California

Innocence Project (CIP). CIP brings hope to those burdened by the system, reunites families, and goes well beyond the call of duty to fight for the innocent.

June 2 Christian Mystics Led by Amanda & Eric Berg 20th Century theologian Karl Rahner once said, “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist at all.” What is it about the Christian mystics, and their spirituality, that continues to speak to us today?

Join us for a morning of learning and conversation as we explore the lives and spirituality of some of the most beloved Christian mystics: Hildegard of Bingen, Bernard of Clairvaux, Francis & Clare of Assisi, Julian of Norwich & Meister Eckhart. We will explore insights from their lives and teachings that provide us with a deeper understanding of our own relationship with Christ, and our call as disciples.

June 16 Mexican Medical Mission Meanderings Led by Fred Lindberg Please join us for a discussion of lessons from medical mission trips to Mexico over the last fifteen years or so. What have we learned and what can we realistically do to help in a

setting like that? Why might someone want to go along on something like that?

June 23 Meet Denise Cortes and Learn about Harbor House Denise Cortes was formerly at the local Lutheran Social Services office and has opened up a new non-profit agency. Harbor House has been formed to serve those who are the most vulnerable in the Conejo Valley. Harbor House provides services to those who are experiencing homelessness and those who are living in extreme poverty. Services include case management, street outreach, finding affordable housing, utility assistance, and the meal and shelter program. Denise will talk about her daily experiences with clients and how we, as a community of faith, can be empowered to help. More information can be found at harborhouseto.org.

CHTLC congregational meeting reportMay 5, 2019The meeting was called to order at 11:46 by president Mike Sadowski 1. Pastor Erik Goehner led us in prayer2. A quorum was verified 3. Presentation of $20,000 from

the 2018 surplus. President Mike Sadowski explained that at the January Congregational meeting, the congregation voted to use a large part of our 2018 surplus for local relief efforts. Specifically, at least half was to go to local agencies ministering to Borderline and Fire Victims. Council researched some options and collaborated with COAM to recommend Harbor House and Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF). The $20,000 was split equally.

A. Karen Guetschoff, Project Manager Emergency Services, accepted on behalf of Harbor House. Harbor House was founded in 2019 to “help those most vulnerable in the local community by working closely with City of TO and faith groups.” Their focus is on working poor and homeless. Harbor House manages the meals and shelter program, provides case management, resource finding, and counseling. All funds are used locally. Karen alluded to the Biblical commandment to “Feed my sheep” when accepting the donation.

B. VCCF was founded in 1987 as part of a nationwide network of granting agencies. They manage a wide variety of funds for education, non-profit service organizations, the homeless (including Harbor House) and many other interests. Susan Seale, Director Community Relations, accepted on behalf of VCCF. She explained that VCCF has a large endowment, a granting process, and a strong organizational infrastructure to administer funds. In the first days after the Borderline massacre and the Woolsey and Hill fires, VCCF joined with Amgen, the Hilton Foundation,

and the City of Thousand Oaks, the county, and others to create dedicated directed-donation funds for local disaster relief – one for the fires, and one for the shooting victims. She emphasized that VCCF serves Ventura County residents.

4. Recognition of volunteers. Mike began by thanking retiring Council members, then retiring committee chairs, then asking, by category, who are or have been volunteers for HTLC, from the Choirs, the band, Altar Guild, Youth Leaders, Buildings and Grounds, those who drop off food on Mondays, to Forum Speakers, even those who show up and comment at meetings. By the time he finished, it was clear all 87 people present were, or had been, volunteers.

5. Goals achievement 2018 – Mike explained we started 2018-2019 with a list of goals. We accomplished some, and left others incomplete. He highlighted a few important items.

a. Building Update – After lots of delays, mostly due to weather, framing starts next week for Honey Tree with completion scheduled for the end of August in time for classes. This is the top priority.

i. Bathrooms will undergo a full remodel. We will have a new handicapped accessible bathroom, a shower, a coffee pantry with a sink, dishwasher, cabinets and a Washer/Dryer hookup. The existing area has been demolished awaiting Fellowship Hall renovation with larger kitchen and better design, improved lighting, carpeting in Fireside, AC and heat, and a new roof. Many new windows and doors. Start date within 4 weeks, always keeping in mind inevitable delays.

ii. Last item on the list is a new patio cover which will need approval and permitting.

iii. Mike pointed out that a number of items have not been budgeted, like appliances, minor repairs

(like stucco repair and fascia painting), AV system, cabinets in Fellowship Hall. Completion estimated end of August, followed immediately by finishing the parking lot on the Los Arboles side.

b. Stewardship. Council presented a balanced budget for 2019. The Endowment Fund Policy and new board were implemented. The gift policy was revised. A scholarship fund for seminary students was funded, and we fulfilled our donation commitment to Harbor House and VCCF.

c. Hospitality had several goals. i. Revitalize HTLC/Honey Tree

relationship. Council made effort to integrate church with Honey Tree. Activities included attending “Back to School” night, the very successful Gingerbread Nativity event, Valentines “Parents Night Out” service project, Easter butterfly release, and pastor visits regularly, and holds chapel once a month.

ii. The facilities use policy was also updated to reflect specifics like insurance requirements, that use must be congruent with our mission, and must state a reason and goals. Under the new policy a Quinceanera 15th birthday celebration was held on May 4.

Tuesday Morning Bible studySimon Peter: Flawed, but Faithful DiscipleHe was not rich or educated, but was familiar with hard work. He was quick-tempered and impetuous, but possessed a passion that would change the world. He left everything to follow his teacher, yet struggled with doubt and fear.

In June and part of July, we take a six week journey with the author Adam Hamilton to take an in-depth dive into the life, faith, and character of Simon Peter from the Scripture. You are welcome to join us for any or all of this study. We meet on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM in the church library. The cost of the book is $20 and can be purchased at the church office. The subjects for the study are listed below. Please note that we will not meet on June 25.

A quote from John Main’s The Way of Unknowing — One of the difficulties we face in learning to meditate is that it is very difficult for us to imagine that thought is not the highest and essential activity of the human being. It seems almost scandalous to a group of people who are hearing about meditation for the first time—especially if they are a religious group—when I say to them, “You must learn not to think about God,” the group is likely to be shocked. But it is true. We have to understand that each of us possesses a much greater potential than mere thought.

Come join us on Thursdays from 4:30–5:30 PM as we try not to think too much! We meet in the Wiggle Room located off of the narthex. If you have any questions, contact Miriam at 805-493-4411.

d. Organizational Sustainability New staff members Kathleen Sands, Elmer Heerma, Joe Zimmerly, and Alicia Spadero are on board. Final review of updated personnel manual is in process.

e. RIC Reconciliation in Christ is a Lutheran process to assist churches to publicly welcome LGBTQ persons into our fellowship. Council initiated discussion a year ago, but after the visit to Thousand Oaks by Westboro Baptist church and the Methodist decision, we felt it was the right time to begin the discussion process. RIC is a process - a journey - which will take six months to a year of intentional discussion, surveys, education, and finally a Congregational vote. It passed, it will require changing our mission statement and our branding. Then a firm commitment to welcome and honor all people and their

relationships. Sue Bauer is leading the journey and welcomes others to help.

6. Election of Congregational Council members

a. Pastor Erik presented Kurt Hartman, Miriam Nakayama, Karie Lynch, Bill Witt. Mike called for nominations from the floor. Hearing none, Jean Kammerer moved to accept the slate by acclamation. Bernie Bauer seconded. Approved.

b. Election of Synod Representatives – Sue Bauer Ron Klassen. Maya Goehner was nominated as a youth delegate.

7. Any Other Business. It was noted that Rick Buckner suggested we institute a formal response, in writing, for requests and suggestions to synod and council. Joe Zimmerly asked where the youth space will be in the new plan. Current plan is to use the 2-year old room for older kids, and need input

from youth directors for younger children.

8. Survey. Council is looking for ideas for 2019-2020 goals, such as a Columbarium, RIC, hiring new staff. Trying to get a feel for what people want in 2019-2020. Surveys were distributed.

1:00 Adjourned with a prayer by Pastor Erik, who said how exciting it is to be able give away $20K and gave thanks for our generosity. He thanked God that we were blessed with a surplus and desire to help our local community. He was also thankful that improvements to the campus are being done with those we serve in mind. the library. The theme of the Bible

study is taken from the book of

Esther, "…for just such a time as this."

Even though the writer of the Book of

Esther never mentions the name of

God, His presence is felt throughout

the book. In the Bible study, to be led

by Suzanne Ingram, we will become

acquainted with the braveness of

Queen Vashti, the perceived and

early end to her reign, and—though

not mentioned by name—God’s plan

for the captive People of Israel, as

Esther makes her entrance into the

court.

All women are encouraged to read

the Book of Esther and join us on

June 13 at 9:30 AM in the Library.

meet on June 18, but due to building

construction and lack of space,

Dorcas Circle will not meet during

the summer months. If conditions

change, Dorcas members will be

notified as to a time and place.

Despite not meeting as a group

we will still continue to supply our

colorful comfort quilts to those in

need of caring love.

The first week in June brings our 45th school year to a close! Children and families will

participate in our closing Singing Program and Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, June 5, and Thursday, June 6. Our Kindergarten Graduation Ceremony is on Wednesday, June 5.

A look back at the school year

School events included Meeting your Teacher Night, Halloween Parades, Christmas Singing Programs, Chapel Time, and Class Visits with Pastor Erik

Special times with our families on Creativity Night where Honey Tree Board members passed out crayons from the Church, and our Mother’s Day celebrations

Community Helper visits from the dentist, firefighters, and police officers

Kindergarten field trips to the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts plaza for two different shows and a train trip to the Santa Barbara Zoo

Our Parent/2s adventures included the pumpkin patch, library visit, hiking, strawberry picking, a tour of Trader Joe's (rain kept them from the strawberries), picnicking—for some it was their first school experience

Honey Tree has had a full year of fun and adventures. The children have grown and learned from the teachers and the teachers learned from the children. We are all so blessed to have this great opportunity to be a part of their lives. It’s always sad to say goodbye. We will miss all of our families who are leaving and will keep fond memories in our hearts. Have a wonderful summer!

Summer tutors—we need you!Each summer Holy Trinity holds a tutoring program for students in the Park Oaks

neighborhood who have completed first and second grades and who are often

learning English as a second language. The program is designed to help students

who may be struggling to keep practicing their skills in literacy and math during their

summer break from school. This year we are including those students who have

completed kindergarten in the program as well as the first and second graders.

We encourage high schoolers and all ages through seniors citizens to consider becoming

a tutor for this six week program. The program begins on June 18; Tuesdays and

Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:30 AM through July 25. A training session for tutors is

scheduled for Tuesday or Thursday—your choice of which day—June 11 or 13. We are

also in need of substitutes—because we realize that summer time is vacation time—

volunteers to serve snacks, and volunteers to sign in students each day.

During the Fellowship Hall construction, we will be using the Honey Tree classrooms

for tutoring.

Please consider joining us for this rewarding program that allows us to develop

relationships with the students we tutor. Sign up on Sunday mornings on the

First Communion classFor three Tuesday evenings, Pastor Erik and

Children's Ministry Assistant Alicia Spadaro,

gathered with parents and children for a time of

learning about the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Our time began with a gathering around a meal

and conversation and then moved on into games

and stories about communion. We learned that

communion means: we belong to God’s family, we

receive God’s grace, we remember God’s story, and

God gives us what we need so there is enough for

everyone. Thanks to all who attended and thanks

to Candace and Jason Thompson for helping to

organize the dinners!

This year’s First Communion Class includes: Alexis

Kit Abraham, Amelie Olsson, Declan Howie, Jase Howie,

Jordan River or the Sea of Galilee. This summer at Holy Trinity, we are going to explore the spiritual power of water by exploring the stories of rivers and lakes in the Bible. We will take a summer trip to these waters through a special sermon series from June to August. Some of these stories may be familiar and some may be new to you, but each will reveal something about how God meets us and surprises us with grace. Along the way we will also connect the Scripture to the many issues around water in our world today. How do we keep our water clean? Who owns the water? What happens when there isn’t enough water? How can we help ensure that others have the water they need?

We hope you will join us this summer as we take a Biblical trip to the waters of Scripture for some spiritual refreshment!

Fighting against injustice and disasters by buying Fair Trade...with MiriamA couple of years ago I started to offer fair trade olive oil from Palestinian olive growers. I thought it was one way to help Palestinians who are trying to earn a living and maintain the olive orchards that have been in their families for generations. It is excellent olive oil for $12 a bottle. It is a little more expensive since it has to go through so many checkpoints to get to market.

With the massacres in Sri Lanka, I’m wondering if buying tea from Sri Lanka would help. English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Chai, Ginger, and Jasmine all have tea, ginger, and cloves from Sri Lankan Small Organic Farmers’ Association (SOFA). SOFA is a community of over 1600 small scale landowners committed to environmental preservation.

When I’m feeling overwhelmed by the suffering of so many people in the world, I try to do something, even if it’s something small like buying a bottle of Palestinian olive oil or a box of tea. Then when you’re using the product, say a little prayer for whomever produced it and other people from their country. Also, I hope you looked at the photos from Palestine that have been up in our sanctuary recently.

If the weather is hot this June, I’ll try to make some Sri Lankan ice tea at the Fair Trade tables on June 9 and 23. Wishing you fair weather and fair buying!

HTLC in FOCUS —

Knit, Purl & Pray Our group began in June of

2016, under the leadership

of Brenda Tubbs, with the

intention of knitting and/or

crocheting prayer scarves and

shawls for anyone needing extra

TLC. This includes people who

are needing strength to get

through medical procedures,

illnesses and recovery, comfort

during times of stress, and

warmth to those who simply

need to feel love and support.

Since 2016, we have added

ear warmers, baby hats, baby

blankets, and prayer squares to

the varied projects we do.

week on Thursdays, June thru

November, and every other

week from January through

May to knit, purl, and pray.

It has become a new circle

of fellowship that we enjoy

thoroughly. Even those

who came in not knowing

what a slip knot was and

taking about three weeks to

master it, are now stitching

away on their own and can

be involved in wonderful

conversations that help build

the support of each other

and our faith.

Conejo Valley Interfaith Refugee Welcome TeamBackground Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Service (IRIS), is a non profit, non-sectarian program assisting refugee resettlement, employment placement, and immigration legal aide. It is a program of the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee service (LIRS), the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, Church World Services, and Episcopal Migration Ministries. The Conejo Valley Group works in partnership with IRIS and other agencies to assist refugees, immigrants, and asylum-seekers.

Two families, sponsored by IRIS will arrive soon, most likely to a small apartment in the west San Fernando Valley. There are a number of mothers and their children in the San Fernando Valley awaiting asylum hearings.

Current Needs

• Gently used furniture for small apartments Lamps, end tables, kitchen tables, chairs, love seats...

• Gift cards or cash donations We are awaiting direction from IRIS on specific needs and where gift cards should be sent

• Welcome Baskets Welcome baskets of new items are given to each family. There are baskets assembled for each room. For example, the bathroom basket contains shampoo, soap, lotion, tissue, towels, cleaning products, etc. The bedroom basket contains bedding, pillows, mattress covers, etc. There are specific lists for assembling the baskets. We are in need of baskets. If a circle, youth group, Men’s Club, or scout troop would like to donate one or more baskets, let me know.

• Cash donations We have supported lawyers doing pro-bono legal work by providing cash for housing and transportation. From time to time, we assist families with small grants to meet unforeseen needs such as car repairs or the purchase of uniforms for work. The United Methodist Church has a special fund. Mail your check to: UMCW, c/o Jon Gentry, 1049 S Westlake Blvd., Westlake Village, CA 91362. Write “Refugee Welcome Fund” in the memo line.

Note Unfortunately, there is much misinformation about these newcomers. Refugees and asylum seekers are documented residents, and therefore legally permitted to be in the United States. Refugees are issued green cards and are legally required to have a job within 30 days of arrival. They must reimburse the US government for all travel expenses. Asylum-seekers released awaiting court hearings are also legally entitled to be here, but are not permitted to work until they have passed their permanent asylum process.

There will be a fundraiser program in late August or early September. More details will be provided.
