Branching OutBranching Out
Our weekend away in Camber was great! We went swim-
ming, on the go karts and on the bumper cars. We had two
competitions - pool and crazy golf. Ben won the golf trophy
and Richard won the pool trophy. We went to Hastings for the
day and went on the train and the cliff top lift. We also went to the the fair and on
the swan pedalo boats. Luke said his legs felt like jelly afterwards!
We had such a good time that Marilyn booked for us to go again in October so we
will be busy fundraising! The entertainment was great and we all enjoyed the
arcades.
Tiffany and Richard have started work experience for one day a week. Tiffany
goes to Riverside Day Centre and Richard works with the East Kent Steam Trains
in Shepherdswell. Our allotment is starting to look good; our onions, potatoes,
peas and beans are all growing well. Ben's strawberries are starting to ripen and
our tomato and cucumber plants are looking good. We are continuing to look after
the plants by the side of the road as you enter the village. We have planted
honeysuckle which has just started to climb up the sign and the nasturtiums are all
coming up.
More news next month.

WillowsWillowsA big thankyou to everyone who voted for us in the Heart of the
Community Awards. We are through to the final 20 and it is
now up to a panel of judges to decide on the 5 winners. Fingers
crossed! We had a good time at The Fox on May 11th. We
played a pool tournament and had chips and a drink. We are
off to the Rare Breeds Centre in Woodchurch for the day soon and then later on
our outing is to Chessington. We'll let you know how they went next month.

A Song to Remember
Once again the Temple Ewell Players hit the spot! A Song to Remember was a
collection of songs and sketches most of which were connected with the two world
wars; the first half dealing with World War 1. I thought that the producer and cast
succeeded in balancing the comedy with the sadness and poignancy of the times.
All the old favourites were there including ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, ‘Pack Up
Your Troubles’ etc., all performed excellently by the Players. The ‘Blackudder’
sketch was played to perfection. The first half finished with a recording of the Last
Post which always brings a lump to my throat.
Part two dealt with the Second World War and beyond, including songs like ‘The
White Cliffs of Dover’, ‘Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree’, ‘All The Nice Girls Like a
Sailor’ and many more. A very lively jitterbug routine was performed by Rachel,
Andy, Jon and Karina.
Lily Groombridge, Erin Keohane, Emily Lomas, Lorelei Parker Morley and Isobella
Poole, who made up the junior singer/dancer section, deserve a special mention -
they were absolutely fantastic.
A section of the show included some audience participation that saw some
reluctant gentlemen dragged on stage and sung to by some provocatively dressed
young ladies! The whole show was in the genre of The Good Old Days with the
part of Compere played by the outstanding Peter Bowley.
The Players are able to field a very good mix of acting, comedic and singing talent
and it shows in the quality of their shows. Once again, well done Temple Ewell
Players.

At our May meeting we discussed two resolutions which will be voted
on at our AGM in Brighton in June.
Thelma, one of our members, gave us a very informative talk about patchwork and
quilting. She showed us many samples of her beautiful work and told us the
history behind the patterns and designs which she had included in her work - a
very enjoyable talk by a very talented lady.
Our next meeting is on 9th June when we will be painting on tiles.

We have just completed a successful run of our Spring production
'A Song to Remember' directed by Ann Hogban, Peter Bowely
and Cindy Tuson. The show was a medley of songs, sketches and dances from
the First and Second World Wars, which was both entertaining and moving. A big
thank you to the cast and crew that put the show together; it was very
memorable and great fun to do! The audiences were fantastic, enthusiastically
singing along and fully supporting us every night. Without them it wouldn't have
been possible.
Looking ever forward our Autumn production which will be two one act plays, 'Blue
Suede Blues' and 'World Premiere'. This will be Heather MacDonald's directing
debut. Details on the show and how to get tickets will be in the Newsletter after
the summer.

The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations
As part of Temple Ewell's celebrations for Her
Majesty's 90th birthday the village joined the
nation in lighting the beacon on King George V
Playing Field on Thursday 21 April.
Parish Council chairman Colin Smithern lit the
Beacon which was extremely well stocked with
wood for the occasion! Mr Marsden et al had
clearly done an excellent job in ensuring that our
Beacon glowed proudly into the early hours.
About forty villagers were there to witness the
event and enthusiastically joined in a rendition of
'Happy Birthday'!
We look forward to further celebrations on
Sunday 12th June. Hope to see you there!

According to past research for the detailed church guide, our Parish Church at
Temple Ewell once had a peal of three bells, all of which dated from the
17th century. For weddings and festive occasions it was a local custom to strike
the bells with a hammer in order to produce more noise and it is suggested that
this resulted in the damage and removal of at least one bell. However, as the one
bell that remains, which is 30ins in diameter, bears the inscription ‘Joseph Hatch
made me in 1603’, it is just within the reign of Elizabeth I.
As each of our communities of Lydden and Temple Ewell celebrate the official 90th
birthday of Her Majesty the Queen on 12th June, I anticipate there could be some
coming together for the Lighting of the Beacon at 8.00 p.m. on King George V
Playing Field. Whilst it is sometimes unpredictable, it is hoped that the lighting can
be preceded by the tolling 90 times, as a mark of special thanksgiving for Elizabeth
II, of Joseph Hatch’s Elizabethan bell.
In her 2014 Christmas speech to the nation, Her Majesty underlined the
importance of her Christian faith. Prepared to ‘do God’ she said ‘For me the life
of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace......is an inspiration and anchor in my life. A
role model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love,
acceptance and healing.
15
Christ’s example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people, of
whatever faith and none’.
Fr. Paul
Heavenly Father,
as we celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Her Majesty the Queen,
receive our heartfelt thanks
for all that you have given her in these ninety years
and for all that she has given to her people.
Continue, we pray, your loving purposes in her,
and as you gather us together in celebration,
unite us also in love and service to one another;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
For the wildlife conservationist or land managers I have over 500g stock of genuine UK
soil and chalk based various wild flower seeds which I wish to distribute between
both villages. Please get in touch to suggest planting spots in Temple Ewell, to
help encourage wild flower areas and bee habitat/activity. I also have a small
amount of seeds for pond and water based wild flowers. I would like to do this in
May, for July/August flowering.
The main issue to report, is that many large holes in the Lydden roads have been
repaired for Lydden, following my reports to Highways. I have sent a copy of the
overall report from KCC Highways to the Parish Council. You can see some of
these holes were 2' x 1.5' feet on the Twitter online. I also have confirmation from
Dover District Council that the renewal of all bus stop road signage has been
scheduled, after my requests were submitted.
I also asked KCC for a total resurface of London and Canterbury roads as there
are many trenches in both road surfaces, due to over weight LGV/HGV traffic
impacting over many years. This has currently been declined by them
District CouncillorDistrict Councillor
______________________________________________________
16
On a positive note, signs at the top of Lydden Hill have been repaired and I have
emailed KCC to chase other issues raised regarding this area. Several visits a
month have shown a lowering of instances of illegal parked EU HGV/LGV vehicles.
I am working with Police, residents and local businesses on reporting obstructions
in this area at every opportunity.
KCC will be replacing the missing hanging baskets they simply took away from the
London Road Bus stop area as KCC cannot locate the missing baskets and they
did not inform anyone at the Parish before removal. This expensive basket was
being kindly maintained by the Parish clerk!
I would like to assure anyone that any other DDC Village issues reported to me are
being dealt with, including road erosion/flooding. Please feel free to invite me to
attend meetings or discuss any DDC concerns you may have, so I can engage
and respond.
Thanking you all.
A copy of my report to the Annual Parish Meeting follows:
“I am happy to report for the last annual period that is has been a pleasure to serve
and represent the Temple Ewell Parish as your elected District Councillor. In my
first year as your councillor it has been very rewarding to have been able to resolve
many important issues, even more rewarding are the letters, emails and telephone
calls stating sincere thanks for my help. Thank you for working with myself to help
resolve issues important to you all, no matter how large or small. A special thanks
must go to the Temple Ewell Parish Council, who have been supportive and
informative on many important issues. I look forward to continuing the good work
with you all to keep your local area being managed and protected as you would
wish.
I have made sure during this previous annual period that all parish residents have
received my email, mobile phone and skype address clearly distributed. Any
Parish resident can also request a home/business visit if needed.
I have contributed much time to look at local neglect and safety, as it was made
very clear after endlessly walking around during the 2015 election campaign,
talking and engaging with many local residents, hearing the series of local issues
repeatedly coming up. Many large potholes have been reported and fixed, with
many others still to be done after KCC highways reports have been
received directly back to my listed report of faults. Dover District Council (DDC)
have recently promised to repaint all damaged and erased bus stop road signage
on both London and Canterbury Roads very shortly.
17
I hope you all can see efforts to start the process of tidying up both village
parishes, this includes all the above and ability to have Lorries repeatedly
removed, despite some views stating I should not bother, this was not an option to
me. I am delighted the Police and residents are both now regularly helping myself
with this endless illegal parking reporting and sending me reports and pictures. I
can see it has made a difference, but I intend to still do more for the future for you
all, we should do all we can to protect rural village life, and I know we all have the
support of Dover District Council (DDC) to do so.
I am happy to see DDC have cropped and litter cleared both Whitfield Hill and
Lydden hill after much reporting and welcome DDC agreeing the very small £5 rise
in Council Tax on Band C for the next year. DDC has also declared and agreed to
freeze all Councillor expenses for a third year running, despite being the lowest in
Kent. This all reflects a better managed and productive District Council. We have
all seen the huge investment coming to Dover during this last year, by next year
we shall all have a long awaited St James shopping centre in use and completed
and the new rail and road infrastructure rebuilt with much larger capacity car
parking in place. None of the above has created any DDC council tax rise, despite
adding much community asset value to the District of Dover.
The recent summer strikes in France and additional recent migrant chaos and
issues have added urgently to the rethinking and investing in Dover and Calais. All
of which will benefit Dover security, Dover roads being managed with the
Chancellor declaring in his budget this year for £250m to be invested to create a
4K Stanford lorry park and get rid of future Operation stack and Manston.
Finally, I note the above period and activity has seen many house prices in Dover
rise by at least 20%-25%, the highest house price leap in the whole of Kent during
2015-2106, reflecting all the above DDC investment and activity over the last period.”

DECISIONS AND CONSEQUENCES
To leave or stay in the European Union is the big political decision of our generation.
The decision is far reaching and irreversible. One would like to think that our
choice is is made on the facts of the case and not on others' opinions, half truths,
smoke screens or scare stories. If only it was easier to sort out facts from supposition.
There are always big decisions to be made whether they are political, personal,
family matters or religious choices. It is always wise to decide on the basis of
careful evaluation and not by neglect or default.
Jesus' disciples were confronted by choice when they went with Jesus to
Caesarea Philippi. This was the place where people worshipped the god Pan who
was half goat and half man. Here infants were sacrificed to this god. Here Jesus
asked who people thought that he was. There were various responses. Then
Jesus asked who they thought that he was. Simon Peter then gave that great
affirmation of faith " You are the Christ, the son of the living God". (St. Matthew
chapter 16). What an amazing consequence this had for his life!

Numbers have increased recently and
we're taking up to nine children a week
down to Acorns class to get them used to
what will be their classroom in
September. The school children are so
nice to the little ones, it's really good to
see the caring ethos of Temple Ewell School in action.
We had a trip to Kearsney Abbey, but unfortunately it was the one day in a sea of lovely
days when it rained. The children did a Springtime Scavenger Hunt and still had
a lolly even if the sun didn't shine.
We're off on our annual trip soon, this year we're going to Wildwood (photos next
month). We'll also be supporting the School Fete with our stall; come along and
see us. There'll be an area for babies to sit, activities for younger children and a
warm welcome. It’s on Saturday 25th June 11am -2pm!
Tiddlers is on every Tuesday term time 9-11am in the Millenium Hall, term time
only.

It was that time of year again when me
and my fellow cyclists, David Gavin and
Chris Barnet, joined hundreds of riders
in raising funds for the Pilgrims
Hospices. The weather was perfect as
we took the 48 mile route from
Canterbury to Margate and back again.
We were two riders down this year but
they were definitely with us in spirit and
hopefully will be with us again next year.
Apart from finishing, the highlight of the
ride was seeing the stunning bluebell
woods that we passed riding through
Preston to the outskirts of Canterbury.
For those ladies amongst you there is a
Diva Ride (25 and 50 mile) organised for
12th June. Do look on the Pilgrims
Hospice web site for more details. Hope
to see you there??

Temple Ewell Parish CouncilTemple Ewell Parish Council
At the start of the Annual Parish Meeting held on 26 April 2016 there
was a wide-ranging discussion of the traffic problems afflicting the
Conservation Area heart of the village along Lower Road and High
Street. The Chairman of the Parish Council, Mr Colin Smithen, vacated the Chair,
as he had a personal interest in the matter under discussion, and the Vice-
Chairman, Mr Glen Mousley, chaired the meeting.
At the outset, Mr Smithen outlined the problems with traffic along Lower Road andHigh Street, and stressed that, contrary to rumours circulating in the village andbeyond, the aim of the Parish Council was not to do away with a bus service thatwas popular with residents of Temple Ewell as well as River and Lydden. Rather, the object was to achieve some relief from the traffic problems currently afflictingthis route through the village. Mention was made of instances of traffic having toreverse in order to allow large vehicles to pass and of damage caused toproperty and the road surface as well as danger to pedestrians and especiallyschool children. Over much of the length of the road there is no footway and it isthe primary route for parents and children walking to school.
It was the view of the Parish Council that the current problems had been made far
worse following the introduction of bus service 15B from River to Canterbury via
Temple Ewell and Lydden. At the present time there are 52 scheduled bus
movements daily through the village, 38 of which are by Service 15B and large
buses (often double-deckers) are used. The Parish Council have had meetings
with Stagecoach, the bus operators, in an effort to reduce the frequency of the
service, to secure the use of smaller buses or to arrange timetable amendments
so that buses do not meet head to head along the narrow stretch of the road
through the village but all of these have come to nothing. The attitude of
Stagecoach appears to be that Service 15B is legal and is profitable so will not be
changed whatever its impact on the village. The Parish Council felt particularly
aggrieved that the only people who were consulted about the introduction of the
service were River Parish Council and the District Councillor for River. No
reference was made to Temple Ewell representatives who could, perhaps, have
foreseen the current problems and negotiated some improvements before the
service was introduced.
We have also had meetings with representatives of the KCC who are very sympathetic
about the volume and type of traffic using Lower Road/High Street but have no
funds to implement any road improvements that would ease the problem.
Basically, it was left to the village to come up with and fund a solution that is
acceptable to all concerned. Double yellow lines had been proposed along the
length of Lower Road in order to leave a clear route for traffic but this was opposed by
the Parish Council as there is little on-street parking in the village for use by residents
and visitors. Furthermore, the lines would be operative at all times when the worst
of the problem arises at the ends of the school day when parents are picking up and
25
collecting children. The favoured solution of the Parish Council is a one-way
traffic system in the length of Lower Road/High Street between the Alkham Valley
Road and Mill Street with the traffic flowing from Mill Street towards Kearsney
Abbey. This would have the additional advantage of preventing the current
rat-run of traffic along the route at the end of the working day and would allow a
free flow of traffic from the Alkham Valley Road onto London Road near to the
Railway Bell. This scheme had been proposed by the KCC 7 or 8 years ago but
dropped on cost grounds.
Mr Smithen had come up with an alternative scheme which, with a spirit of
compromise on all sides, would still allow service 15B to operate. This would
involve the use of small buses running from River to Lydden and back to River via
the Crabble junction. In this way, residents of Temple Ewell, River and Lydden
would be able to travel to the doctors' surgery in Lydden and the pharmacy in River
without too much inconvenience. The number of buses using Lower Road/High
Street would be almost halved at a stroke as they would return to River via the
Crabble junction and Stagecoach should still have a viable service. One downside
of the proposal was the fact that those wishing to travel on to Canterbury would
need to transfer to Service 15 in Temple Ewell or Lydden.
Having outlined the current situation and the feelings of the Parish Council the
meeting was thrown open for public comment and discussion. It immediately
became clear that although those present accepted that there was a problem, a
number felt that this was due to use of the route by large vehicles other than buses
and it was suggested that more heavy lorries used the route. The Parish Council
was proposing to arrange a traffic census in order to clarify the volumes and type
of traffic.
A number of points were raised by those present including:
the likely impact of the new development at Whitfield which could
significantly increase traffic flows
the impact of Operation Dover Tap on the volume of traffic using the
Alkham Valley Road and Temple Ewell rather than the A20 route into
Dover
the introduction of traffic lights at the junction of the Alkham Valley Roiad
with London Road in order to improve traffic flows and discourage use of
the rat-run through the village
the introduction of a 20mph speed limit through the village with speed
bumps

A resident also voiced fears concerning the stability of the river bank in places
along Lower Road where voids had appeared under the road surface.
Following a full discussion of all points of view the Chairman undertook to place all
of the matters before the Parish Council at its next meeting when the way forward
would be considered. He also undertook to keep parishioners informed of
progress in resolving the problem and to call further public meetings as necessary.
The full Parish Council meets on the last Tuesday of the month (excluding August

A Brief History of June
June is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendar and is 30
days long. It is the month that has the most amount of daylight hours of the year
in the Northern Hemisphere and shortest amount of daylight hours in the Southern
hemisphere.
Many celebrations take place in the month of June, especially marriages.
According to one etymology, June is named after the Roman goddess Juno who is
the goddess of marriage and a married couple’s household. It is considered good
luck to get married in this month.
June and May are the only two months that don’t start
on the same day of the week as any other month. June
ends on the same day of the week as March every year.
June’s birth flower is the rose or the honeysuckle and
the birthstones for June are the pearl, the moonstone,
and the Alexandrite, which all symbolize health and
longevity.

District CouncillorDistrict CouncillorKent calls for rethink on pharmacy plans
Kent County Council is calling for the Department of Health to
reconsider its plans to change funding of community pharmacies,
over fears it could lead to dozens of rural and suburban sites closing.
KCC Cabinet Member for Public Health and Adult Social Care, Graham Gibbens,
is writing on behalf of the Council, to express concerns about a current
consultation which proposes a six per cent cut.
Council members say it would have a considerable impact on access to
pharmaceutical services, in particular those that serve rural villages and to specific
members of the population, such as the vulnerable and elderly.
It’s believed over a quarter of Kent’s 280 pharmacies could be affected adversely
by the proposal, leading to reductions in services and even closures. Though I
have it on good word, that there will be no pharmacy closures in the Dover West
area, though I will monitor the situation.
Graham Gibbens said: “We have numerous suburban communities in Kent served
by small pharmacies which could be at risk, as they are dependent on NHS income
to remain viable. The pharmacies provide valuable services in these rural areas,
often acting as a community hub to the village and preventing social isolation; we
are concerned this will be lost.
“We are disappointed by the consultation and its proposals which come at a time
when we should be using our pharmacies even more to reduce the burden on GPs
and A&Es. We are standing up for rural and isolated residents, along with local
pharmacies who are an important community link and business provider therefore
we are calling for the plans to be reconsidered.”
The Health and Social Care Act 2012 transferred responsibility for the
Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) from the Primary Care Trusts to the
Health and Wellbeing Boards on the 1st April 2013.
The Kent Health and Wellbeing Board undertook a thorough review of all the
pharmaceutical services in Kent and published its PNA in 2014. It found that,
although overall pharmaceutical service provision in Kent was good, it was felt that
the current provision of “standard 40 hour” pharmacies should be maintained
especially in rural villages and that the current provision of “100 hour” pharmacies
should also be retained.
The Department of Health consultation is also considering a Pharmacy Access
scheme and Kent County Council has asked to be involved in this. It is appealing
for consultation with all relevant stakeholders, such as the Health & Wellbeing
Boards, before any changes are made.

Dear Readers
Following on from last month’s letter
about Bill the Greyhound ......
Within a few days of leaving us, Bill
found his forever home with a lovely
family. Their lurcher Jess allows Bill to
share her sofa and he is thoroughly
enjoying having a loving home. He’s
started dog training to help him out with
other breeds and is doing so well, he
can go without his muzzle!
His family have said that they chose Bill
because of the videos and photos we
sent into Kent Greyhound Rescue; this
isn’t because we’re anything special,
it’s simply because they could see his
lovely nature and personality in a home
setting.
Fostering a dog is a huge help to them
in finding a forever home. Greyhounds
have an incredibly gentle nature and
are lazy and do not need a lot of exer-
cise.
KGR rescue lurchers, whippets and
podencos if greyhounds aren’t for you.
The Dogs Trust also runs a fostering
scheme; both charities pay vet’s bills
etc. It’s immensely rewarding.

We will have another dog over the
summer so keep an eye out for the
red ‘I need a home’ bib and come and
say hello to our next temporary family
member.
