Telecommunication

Telecommunication is the transmission of information over significant distances to communicate, or Telecommunication means to change information into electric signals for transmission and switching.

History of telecommunication

The history of telecommunication began with the use of smoke signals and drums in Africa, the Americas and parts of Asia. In the 1790s, the first fixed semaphore systems emerged in Europe; however it was not until the 1830s that electrical telecommunication systems started to appear. The history of telecommunication is an important part of the larger history of communication.

Early telecommunications

Early telecommunications included smoke signals and drums. Drums were used by natives in Africa, New Guinea and South America, and smoke signals in North America and China. Contrary to what one might think, these systems were often used to do more than merely announce the presence of a camp.

Telegraph and Telephone

The first commercial electrical telegraph was constructed in England by Sir Charles Wheatstone and Sir William Fothergill Cooke. It used the deflection of needles to represent messages and started operating over twenty-one kilometres (thirteen miles) of the Great Western Railway on 9 April 1839.

The conventional telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876, based on his earlier work with harmonic (multi-signal) telegraphs. The first commercial telephone services were set up in 1878 and 1879 on both sides of the Atlantic in the cities of New Haven and London. Bell held the master patent for the telephone that was needed for such services in both countries. The technology grew quickly from this point, with inter-city lines being built and telephone exchanges in every major city of the United States by the mid-1880s. Despite this, transatlantic voice communication remained impossible for customers until January 7, 1927 when a connection was established using radio.

In 1880, Bell and co-inventor Charles Sumner Tainter conducted the world's first wireless telephone call via modulated lightbeams projected by photophones. The scientific principles of their invention would not be utilized for several decades, when they were first deployed in military and fiber-optic communications.

Page 30

Page 31: Telenor telecommunication company

Telenor Pakistan is spread across the country, creating thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities.

BCG MATRIX OF TELENOR:

EASY PAISA :

It is the star SBU of Telenor because the reason Is that the concept of the payment of bill, transfer of money and even mobile banking with the help of Easy paisa services was first and foremost launched by Telenor in the telecommunication Market of Pakistan. That is why Telenor’s this SBU is star and leading the market of Financial services by the name of easy paisa. Telenor has almost 8000 outlets of easy paisa all over the country so it has high market share and growth as well. That is why it is star.

Edge stick :

This SBU know as USB dongle is the Question mark business of Telenor the main reason is that it has been

Page 31

Page 32: Telenor telecommunication company

recently launched by Telenor and almost most of the Market has already been captured by PTCL INTERNET USB’s whereas Telenor’s edge stick hasn’t captured enough market that is why this business of Telenor is at question mark stage because Telenor itself is not aware that whether this business will capture market or not? Weather the Edge stick will be able to compete USB’s of PTCL of may attract the customers of PTCL INTERNET USB’s or not? So this business is in doubt that is why it is in Question Mark.

Prepaid :

This business is cash cow just because it is always under use by majority of the subscribers of Telenor out of 36 million. That is why it earns a lot of cash for Telenor which is then used by Telenor for the improvement of other type of SBU’s and business.

Post Paid :

This business is considered as dog just because it has not high market share and growth.

The reason of the Postpaid in the category of dog is :

1. Postpaid of Telenor is under the use just in the metropolitan cities of Pakistan and has no access in other areas of Pakistan neither it is used there.

2. It is also not under use of any one just because every customer of Telenor cannot bear it due to its expensiveness that is why its market share are not impressively high and that is why it is dog business of Telenor.

Page 32

Page 33: Telenor telecommunication company

Mobil ink has high market share but, low growth rate hence it is placed at cash cow position. Ward is at Dog position because of low market share and low growth rate. Ward did not invest to

compete the telecom market in Pakistan.

Telenor and Ufone are placed in stars because of high market share and still high growth rate in industry. They have to invest more to retain this position to convert into cash cow.

Zong is placed in Question Mark due to low market share but, still there is high growth rate in market. It can be a star by huge investments.
