Principal’s Message

Director of Education
March, 2014
As we enter the season of Lent, I ask that you join us in preparing your children for
this significant period in our lives as Catholics. We encourage the children to take
time to reflect upon and celebrate the true meaning of His resurrection.
Kindergarten registration continues throughout this month. You are encouraged to
inform your Catholic neighbours who plan to enroll their children at our school. I
would also be pleased to give them a tour of our school.
Please note that the week long March Break this year begins
on Monday, March 10th, 2014.
The students return to school on Monday, March 17th, 2014.
The attached calendar provides details of the various events occurring this month.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the St. Nicholas of Bari Catholic com-
munity for your continued support of our school programs and we wish all of you a
very enjoyable March Break with your children!

Prayer for the Family
Heavenly Father, You have given us a model of life in the Holy Family of Nazareth.
Help us to make our family another Nazareth where love, peace and joy reign. May it
be deeply contemplative, intensely Eucharistic, and vibrant with joy. Help us to stay
together in joy and sorrow through family prayer.
Teach us to see Jesus in the members of our family. May we love one another as you
love each one of us, and forgive each other’s faults as you forgive us. Amen

Northern Spirit Games
On Feb.21/14, my class and I went to
the Northern Spirit Games. It was
AMAZING! On the bus ride, I sat next
to my best friend, Emily (we chatted a
lot). When we got there, we had a big
ceremony in Archbishop Romero’s
gym. We sat on the bleachers and
learned about native traditions and
ways. After that, we suited up and
went out to the very wet field. We had
a giant ball in the middle of a parachute and we had to
bounce it up and down. Our high score was 80! Then we
went back in and played Kick Ball, Spear Throw (foam
spears) and Seal Crawl. It was lots of fun! Then we suited up
AGAIN, and went out. We played Rope Jump, Stick Throw
and had a race. When we went back in, I was soaking wet! I
changed my socks and tried to dry up with my jacket.
We then had lunch and a
Dance Party! After the clos-
ing ceremonies we left.
What a great day!

INTERMEDIATE BOYS BASKETBALL
The intermediate boys basketball team had a great season this year. We finished second in the divisional tournament losing by only 5 points to James Culnan. We moved on to the second place divisional tournament. We won two exhibition games hosted at St. Nicholas of Bari.
Good job boys!
Thanks to Mr. Millin for his great coaching!

OWARE CLUB
The Oware Club has been introduced at St.
Nicholas of Bari School. Oware is an African
board game played by two players. It re-
quires a simple counting strategy to win a
game. The Oware players meet twice a week
in Mrs. Varela’s room every Wednesday and
Friday from 12:25 pm-1:05pm.
I feel very relaxed when I play the game. It is
really fun and it gives me an opportunity to
make new friends. I really like the Oware
club and I hope it continues in the upcoming
years.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME
begins
SUNDAY, MARCH 9th
The LEGO Club at St. Nicholas of Bari ran success-
fully for 10 weeks. The students from Kindergarten
all the way up to Grade Six played, laughed, and
assembled. From skyscrapers to castles, cars to jet
rocket airplanes, and animals to Minions. The students developed a variety
of skills such as social, fine motor, collaboration, improvisation, self-
regulation, problem solving skills, and above all, creativity! It also helped
some of them build confidence and develop friendships across grade levels,
truly nurturing our Catholic values. Their creative pieces have been put on
display in our school library. Running this club at St. Nicholas of Bari provided endless fun for these children and there
were so many benefits. The skills and lessons they learned from playing with the LEGO will be valuable to them as they
grow. Who knows, perhaps this club sparked one of our students to become a future Toronto Architect! Can’t wait to
build again with you in the future.
THANK YOU to Ms. Bartlett and Mrs. Dos Santos for running the program.
Earth Hour
Earth Hour will be celebrated this
year on Saturday, March 29th from
8:30 to 9:30 p.m. TCDSB schools will
mark Earth Hour on Friday, March
28th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. All non-
essential lighting will be turned off
for that one hour period, as a re-
minder of our global responsibility to
reduce carbon emissions and energy
consumption, and to reflect the
Board’s commitment to our collective
efforts to become good stewards of
the earth.

Guidance Corner
High School Registration is Underway!
High school registration nights have begun and will continue into the month of March. Be sure
to read through your child’s acceptance packages and complete all of the necessary forms before
submitting them on the date of registration.
Pay particular attention to the Reach-Ahead course that is being offered by some schools in the TCDSB. Your
child may be entitled to a credit for taking a four week summer school course that involves a doing a little bit of
Math, a little English and some Physical Education. This course is a great opportunity for your child to become
familiar with their new environment, to meet the new students with whom they will be attending school, and they
will begin in September with one completed credit. It’s a win-win situation if your child’s school offers the course.
Exchange of Information Meetings
Representatives from all of the high schools will be in contact with teachers this month, to discuss your children’s
progress and to ensure that the secondary school is prepared to receive their new grade 9 students and meet any
needs that they may have.
Mental Health Awareness
Teachers in most schools have been in-serviced on the new Mental Health Strategy being adopted by the school
board. If you would like to become informed on what is being planned for the next few years, feel free to visit the
TCDSB website and watch the ―Journey to Wellness‖ video on the link provided. Simply search ―Mental Health
Strategy TCDSB‖ for the link to the website. Or go to the TCDSB Home Page and go into Programs And Services
> Special Services > Mental Health .
Have a Wonderful March Break!

Katie Weatherston and her Olympic Story
On February 13th, 2014 Katie Weatherston, a
member of the 2006 Olympic Gold Metal
Women’s Hockey Team visited our school and
shared with us her Olympic story, she also built
Olympic Spirit and hype in our school.
She was very inspirational and she taught the students
about goal settings and overcoming obstacles. She also
emphasized character education and the importance of
following the rules. Students responded enthusiastically
to her message about the importance of overcoming chal-
lenges and they felt empowered by her positive attitude;
If you can dream it, You can do it!

CARNAVAL WEEK
During the last week of February we celebrated the French winter Carnival
here at St.Nick’s. Some of the activities included: an art/

became the ―Queen ―of our Carnival.
The 7 princesses are:
Grade1 – Micaela B., Grade 2 Ciara P., Grade 3, Bianca S., Grade 4, Monica H., Grade
5, Tatiana C., Grade 6, Alexia P., Grade 7/8, Daniela C. (Queen)
The art contest winners were: Cadien P. (1), Kirah V. (2), Georgina L. (3), Lewana C. (4), Sofia L. (5), Yorashko B. (6),
Karina A. (7) and Tiffany B. (8). We ended our fun filled Carnival week with classroom Bingo. This year Mrs. Varela’s

Finally, we would also like to thank Mrs. Dellenbag for being this year’s Bonhomme.
