OUR YEAR IN REVIEW-CELEBRATING OUR SUCCESSES!!!

Page 2 The Voice of Holy Angels

OUR GRADE FIVE YEAR - Mr. Sloan’s class

Mrs. Stergar’s Grade One Class

This year in grade one, we had fun learning, playing and celebrating a lot of different things together. In the fall, we went on

our first trip to Willowgrove Farm where we learned about living things. We had a Halloween dance and we participated in a

drama and dance workshop. Unfortunately, in November our classmate Luca B. got sick from cancer and had to leave our

school so he could have treatments in the hospital. We have been praying for him and miss him. Get Well Soon Luca B! For Christmas we sang in the Christmas Concert. In the New Year a scientist came to our class-

room and taught us more about Structures and we made a stool out of newspaper that Mrs. Stergar was sup-

posed to sit on. She did and it did not break! February was exciting as we celebrated our 100th day of school

together and we participated in Carnival and a Dance-a-thon. In the spring we learned about the

earth and how to take care of it. We enjoyed a walk to the movie theatre to watch an Earth Day movie together and

we went on our second school trip to the Science centre which was a lot of fun. At the end of May we participated

in Cancer Awareness week and went on a walk-a-thon around the neighbourhood. We stopped by Luca’s house

to say hi. In June we went on a trip to Crawford Lake. We also prepared, practiced and hosted the End of the Year

Mass with our friends in Mrs. Cosentino’s grade one class. Overall, we had a TERRIFIC year!

This year, we had twelve grade three students and eight grade four

students. We went to Willow Grove Farm to practice mapping skills that is

curriculum for both grades. We went to Harbourfront Centre and painted

„still Life‟ flowers and / or fruit with acrylic paint. In language class we read

„Charlotte‟s Web‟, „Chocolate Fever‟, „How to Eat Fried Worms‟ and many

other books. We performed drama skits like „The Elves and Young Stu Baker‟

„Fox Escapes‟ „The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything‟,

„Rumpelstiltskin‟ „Jack and the Giant Sunflower‟ and many other plays. For the

Christmas pageant, we performed two choral readings with actions „Reindeer

Chatter‟ and „All Kinds of Packages.‟

We made Clay Masks in forms of faces or animals and we also played

games like Ragdoll and Tin Soldier at the Living Arts Centre. We went to the

Ontario Science Center where we watched a film about oceans and had a

presentation about Living things. We learned how seeds sprout by placing al-

falfa seeds in mason jars and rinsing the seeds two or three times a day. Elysse

Howard and Michael Zuzek‟s families added the alfalfa sprouts to their salads

on Father‟s Day. We had a fantastic year!

Our grade five year was great. Our teacher Mr. Sloan was really fun, he took us out for D.P.A. and taught us great new skills in

soccer, floor hockey, high jump and volley ball. The student council organized fun days such as dress down

day, movie day, pajama day, and other ones too. They also did cancer awareness week and health week. We

also had our French teacher organize a the winter carnival. The grade six students organized a talent show.

The parent council has also organized lots of great things. Finally we will have a play day at the end of the

year. Best of all though were the trips. We went to Harbour Front to sketch outdoor scenes and then paint

them, our ski trip to Glen Eden was fantastic! We had skiing lessons, some free time to ski, and also a chance

to go down the big hills. This year was great! We had fun teachers, fune days, amazing trips, and last but not

least, we all made new friends.

WHAT A GREAT YEAR WE’VE HAD! Grade 1 Mrs.Cosentino

It is hard to believe the end of the year is here. At last homework, tests and assignments are done and it is time to re-flect and prepare for our journey to second grade. We've made so many wonderful memories and had so much fun this year together. Our field trip to the farm was a wonderful way to start off the year and enhance our lessons about living things and the life cycle of plants. The highlight for December was the Christmas Concert. It was a huge hit. We re-hearsed and rehearsed and rehearsed and gave a perfect performance on the Big Night.

In addition, this year we have celebrated the Bonhomme Carnival. We ended our week long look at French culture with an amazing winter playday and a French musical performance. Playing the outdoor games for the first time and warm-ing up with hot chocolate afterwards was a real treat. During the season of giving, we once again showed what an amazing and generous classroom family we have. Thank you for the donations and support.

During the spring, we were busy learning about energy and the seasons. Our trip to the Science Centre was a real hit. We explored the different exhibits, investigated energy in all its forms, discovered the night sky and toured the rainfor-est. The students talked about it for weeks. Other seasonal highlights included our amazing talent show, trip to Craw-ford Lake and our last school mass. So much care and hard work went into our preparations.

First grade is a very special time and as they prepare to leave and move on to second grade, it is good to reflect on these special moments. It is a privilege and a blessing for me to have shared these special moments with your pre-cious children. Thank you for a Fantastic First Grade year!

Grade seven has been an awesome year for us. It has been filled with many amazing trips like when we went to Mansfield, the Hockey Hall of

Fame, Stratford and many more. All these adventures have been jam-packed with entertaining facts and great times.

Personally, I believe that Mansfield was the best trip that we ever had. Walking the forest with my classmates in the dark with Mr. Sandre

and Mrs. Neri was a blast! Mr. Sandre also told us the story Of Lady Mansfield and how she died.

Going to see the play “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown” in Stratford was also very cool. The play was about Charlie

Brown, hence the title, and all his many adventures in life. It taught us what it means to be a good person.

We also went to the National Film Board in downtown Toronto. We made one second of animation and made a short

film out of clay characters that we made. We then saw our animations on a screen and watched everyone’s films.

Being Canadian, I love hockey so going to the Hockey Hall of Fame was a real treat. We learned all about hockey and

all the great players. We then went to the St. Lawrence market for lunch.

We saw two films this year, the Lorax and Chimpanzee. Both movies were very good. The movies were both for earth week. As Chimpanzee

being about nature and the Lorax being about how humans are destroying the earth.

Mrs. Tutak, an artist, came in to teach us how to make prints. We did positive reliefs and negative reliefs. An author by the name of Eric Wal-

ters also came to do a presentation on some of his books and how he comes up with ideas to write about. We went to Father John Redmond

Highshool for a Taste of the Arts program. There we did drama, sketching, and dance,

Speaking of dancing my classmates and I participated in ballroom dancing. We learned three dances that varied from the Salsa to the Waltz.

We then showed off our new dance moves at the school Spring Fling. We can also use some of these dances at the summer dance coming up, or

maybe even the school talent show.

Just for fun and exercise, we went ice skating. We walked to the rink in the morning, skated for about an hour, then walked back to school in

time for lunch. Some of us even participated in school sports events like volleyball, soccer, swimming, cross-country, track etc. all these

events are very tiresome.

As you can see, this year has been great. With trips like the National Film Board and Mansfield, how could you not have a great year?? There

are also still things to look forward to like the trip to Centennial Park and the talent show, and of course as we all know, the end of school.

This year was great and I can’t wait until next year!!

OUR YEAR IN REVIEW

Page 4 The Voice of Holy Angels

The story about our year in Mrs. Galica’s class – written together with Mrs. Galica and her students

Our very first day began in September 2011. We met new people and said hello. We made a triangular prism with our name on it and played a game with toilet paper. Soon after that we started to work. At first it was hard, but then it got easy because we started to learn more and understand things. Our first trip was to the farm. We got to see all kinds of animals and we got to pet them. There was a tractor hay ride and a cow named Lovely. The corn maze was so fun and we got lost in it. There was an indoor hay playground with a slide and a rope. At Halloween, we had a dance. We had a great time because we got to see everyone in their great costumes. There was a costume contest. Everyone looked amazing. The scientist came to our class to teach us about animals. We had furs, shells, skins, blubber, and feathers that we got to touch. The Christmas concert was tons of fun! The boys wore silver wigs and sang Jingle Bell Rock and the girls wore hula skirts and sang Melekelikimaka which is a Hawaiian Christmas song. We think the audience really liked it. Winter was cold but boring. There was hardly any snow! We tried to have fun at recess, but mostly we just walked around outside or played soccer. It would be nice if we could make a snowman. Mr. Galica came and let us try

on his fireman helmet and jacket. Abie came to visit us too. Did you know he doesn’t have a tail? For Valentines Day we had a dance. The gym was decorated really cool and the DJ was lots of fun. We wore pink or red. The DJ danced on the stage. Then March Break came. Everyone did different things. Some people went away and others stayed home. The weather was great here. After March Break we started getting ready for Reconciliation and our First Holy Communion. We practiced our songs and listened to stories about Jesus. Soon it was the big day to receive the Eucharist for the first time. It

was a beautiful day. Everyone looked special. I think a lot of us were kind of nervous at first, but after it was over we were happy. We did lots of science experiments in class like make oobleck and butter. We learned about different countries around the world and about each others’ families. The Science Centre trip was a blast. We got to try every-thing there like pushing buttons and pulling handles. Then we wrote CAT4. It wasn’t that hard. Mrs. Galica said if you listen in class, you will know the answers. Afterwards we all got slushies because it’s a tradition. We had another scien-tist in our class. She taught us about simple machines. They were really cool. In the end we went to Crawford Lake and learned about the First Nations people. It was really hot but it was fun. We had a great year. We learned so much cool stuff. It was lots of fun and it was really interesting. I think that if you are in Mrs. Galica’s class next year you will like it .a lot.

Dear students, families and teachers,

We had a great time in Grade 2 this year! We had a blast performing Melekalikimaka and Jingle Bell Rock at the Christmas con-

cert while wearing hula skirts and rock star wigs. A very important event that happened was our Reconciliation and First Holy

Communion. We were cleansed of our sins and received the Body of Christ for the first time. In May, we went to the Science

Centre where we learned about matter and movement. Then, we had Scientist Sabina come to our classroom to teach us about

simple machines. We had a lot of fun. It was awesome! We got to crush pop cans and make our own cars! This year, we put our

brains to the test when we showed just how very smart we are when we wrote our CAT 4 tests. They were easy! We also got to

meet a very special little girl named Julie Nicole. She is Mrs. Gaglia‟s new baby. She is adorable! We are really going to miss Grade

2 but we are excited for Grade 3. Have a great summer everyone! We know we will! Sincerely, Ms. Pontes‟ Grade 2 class

Grade 2—Ms. Pontes

“K” is for kindergarten, hip, hip, hooray! We have had such a great year in Senior Kindergarten! We have had fun at all

our learning centres like the writing centre, the big blocks, the drama centre, the playdough and the listening centre.

At the puppet centre we acted out The Three Little Pigs and lots of other stories. During circle time, we stayed in our bubbles on

the carpet and learned about letters and numbers, listened to stories, sang songs, recited poems and even learned about how a

butterfly starts from a caterpillar, spins a chrysalis and then turns into a beautiful butterfly. We made lots of friends and especially

had fun having adventures with Reading Raccoon. Even Ms. Levay spent the weekend with Reading Raccoon. We really were ex-

cited when we reached 100 Day and brought in our fabulous 100 collections. Our class enjoyed drawing with Mrs. Vanelli and play-

ing Candyland with Ms. D‟Souza. “N” is for next year, first grade here we come!

It was a fun year in Junior Kindergarten. The children have many happy

memories of the past year. We truly enjoyed celebrating the many spe-

cial days throughout the year. Halloween, Valentine’s Day and the 100th

Day were fun days because we got to dance and play special games.

The Christmas Tea was special because we got to go on the stage to

sing songs. Making crafts and special gifts for our parents was also fun. Pyjama day was fun be-

cause we got to wear our pyjamas and eat teddy bears lying on (marshmallow) pillows. It was ex-

citing to go to church and stand up on the alter to sing and pray to Mary. Even the work in kinder-

garten was fun; printing and reading the Morning Message, graphing the weather, and getting

stickers for work well done in our workbooks. Going outside was a lot of fun especially when we

brought out the bubbles, chalk, hoops and balls. The best part of Kindergarten was playing with all

the TOYS!

Grade 4 in Mrs. Malowany's class was awesome! Learning was so interesting and we laughed a lot. We did so many exciting things likeLiterature Circles, Learning Circles, Penpals from the U.S.A., Math

tasks that were fun, Science experiments like pretending we were geologists, and cool technology projects like creating a music video. The best part was all the fun art projects like medieval illumi-nations, paintings, using pastels and working with clay. We had great discussions about being good stewards of creation and how to be bucketfillers. In ourLearning Circle we asked a lot of questions and learned how to research to find answers. When we learned about Medieval Times it was so interesting.

Mrs. Malowany let us research topics we were interested in for Medieval Times. We got to work with people that were interested in the same thing. We liked learning together and sharing all the information about Medieval Times. We worked hard all year to do our best. Even though Mrs.

Malowany made us do so much work and taught us so much, she made learning like an adven-ture that was fun. It was a great year! Written by Emily Hannigan and Sofia Policelli

GRADE 4- Mrs. Malowany

Good Times in Mrs. Kite’s Junior Kindergarten

Grade Six - Ms. McKeown

Grade six was one of the most exciting years. The grade sixes learned to become leaders by joining

clubs like “The Health Action Team” which focuses on health and physical activity. Or “Bucket Fill-

ers”, which focuses on being positive and kind. A group of students started an art club for the

younger kids, while another group started a dance club. Along with that, we had many field trips to

places like Don Bosco to bake, a workshop on at Glen Eden, Skating at central arena, and watch-

ing “Chimpanzee” at Cineplex. Recently the grade sixes came together to organize a talent show

for the school. Above all, we learned the importance of working together and friendship. We had

lots of fun, learned a lot, and are now prepared for whatever grade seven brings! Thank you to the

teachers, Ms. McKeown, Mr. White, Madame Mazzucco, Madame Karas, Mrs. Coscarelli, Ms. Simic,

Ms. Scanga, and Mr. Zaccone for teaching us. We also thank Ms. Levay for always

helping and encouraging us to be positive role models. Thanks to you, we are ready

for next year!

MS. ZINKO’S SK class

Page 6 The Voice of Holy Angels

The Senior Kindergartens in Mrs. Zinko’s class had a fantastic year! We learned new sight words and read

books together. The Christmas Tea with Mrs. Kite’s class was great because we got to sing for our families.

Our visit from Scientist Laurie was so much fun and we learned all about animals and their homes. In the

spring, we learned about butterflies and so many more of God’s creatures. Everyday was a new adventure!

We would like to thank our families for helping us this year. Grade One here we come!

MEMORIES FROM MS. BERBENETZ’S Grade 3 by: Hope & Liyah

In Mrs. Berbenetz‟s grade 3 class we learned so many different things. We met so many interesting people

from different backgrounds! We had many helpers this year: Mr. Farlinger, Ms. Valeska, Ms. Chanel, Mr. T,

Mrs. Halicki & Mrs. McDonough. They enriched our lives! Baby Xzavier is part of the Roots of Empathy program.

He came to us at 4 months old at the beginning of the school year. We learned so many things from baby Xzavier &

his mom, Mrs. Wedderburn and Mrs. Compagnone! Xzavier grew and developed like a tree, right in front of our eyes!

We learned so many different types of prayers & poems! We learned thes poems: The Earth Speaks, Christmas is

Coming, November & many more! The Prayers we learned were: Let us Pray, O Sacrament & Remember! We also

went on lots of many field trips, sports trips, educational trips and 7-eleven trips! For sports trips we went to Centen-

nial Park, for field trips we went to Crawford Lake, Kortright Centre, Willowgrove Farm & Science Centre.

We learned to respect people, we learned how to be responsible and to tell the truth.

Respect: you‟ve got to give it to get it!

Responsibility: You are responsible for yourself!

Trustworthiness: want to be trusted? Tell the truth!

Mrs. Berbenetz inspired some of us to become teachers!

198 days were spent in grade 3 (almost 200)! We cherish every single one of them! We loved grade 3! I hope you

like grade 3 just like we all did!

MR. SANDRE’S GRADE 7 YEAR

Page 7 The Voice of Holy Angels

This year Mr. Sandre‟s class was very busy. We were in charge of many things such as Hamburger Day, Pan-

cake Tuesday and the milk program. We were also excited because we finally had the chance to join the Me

to We program and run for Student Council. Student Council made a big difference in the year for everyone

by organizing different events such as dances, Cancer Week, and many more. Everything was fun for the stu-

dents to plan and everyone enjoyed it. We went on many trips, such as The Hockey Hall Of Fame, Stratford,

National Film Board, Father Redmond, St. Lawrence Market and Centennial Park, however, the trip that

stood out the most was the trip to Mansfield for 2 nights. This trip was especially fun because it gave us a

sense of freedom when we were in the forest by ourselves using an orienteering compass to find our way.

The trip also helped us on our way to adulthood. However, this is school, and it isn‟t all fun and games. We

had many group projects that helped us to understand how to lead and understand each other. We

also had to prepare for the CAT-4 testing by being committed to our work. This year we have

matured and learned many things, but still had a lot of fun in the process.

As the end of our journey at Holy Angels nears, we look back and remember the great times, valuable les-

sons learned, and special memories we have built together. We definitely had some real bonding moments

this year like our fantastic trip to Montreal, our participation in various sporting events, leading initiatives

around the school, and of course every day we got to spend together in the classroom just being ourselves.

We started off as 31 grade eight students, but as the weeks went by we really became closer and grew into a

family where we could share jokes, laugh unconditionally, and form lasting friendships. I think that one of

our favourite memories will always be our graduation trip to Montreal. What could be better than spending

three days with your friends, exploring new things and taking in all that the beautiful city has to offer? Hon-

estly, I think what has impacted us most this year is how blessed we have all been to have such a fantastic

teacher like Ms. Olivieri. She has not only helped us prepare for high school and solve equations, but more

importantly she has taught us how to appreciate life and be the people we have always aspired to be. This

has been an exciting, incredible, and exceptional final year and I know that these memories will

never fade away. Even as we continue on our paths in life I‟m certain we will all look back and

reminisce about how we got here and how wonderful our time at Holy Angels has really been.

OUR GRADE 8 END OF YEAR REFLECTION

Another year has quickly passed by. The students were busy throughout the year. They were fortunate

to be able to start learning the Recorder with Mr. Zaccone and were able to perform for their parents at

the Spring concert. We participated in a wonderful landscape painting workshop at Harbourfront Centre

and on a fun but soggy ski trip in February.

This year, through Miss Levay‟s initiative, the students were able to participate in a wonderful Ballroom

Dance workshop. Parents were amazed to see their children perform several dances at the Spring Concert.

The students were able to showcase their computer talents with “Paperless Projects” using the Smart Board

in class. They also completed days of testing with the Grade 5‟s completing CAT 4 tests and the Grade 6‟s

EQAO. The students have worked hard all year and are looking forward to a relaxing and safe summer.
