The movement towards and development of Internet of things technology has already

considerably improved many organisations ability to manage their assets better. As organisations continue to develop themselves in their given field their ability to monitor their given field their ability to monitor their assets needs to remain agile to meet ongoing change.

The way in which we get data and information from our assets must continue to provide rapid solutions and even swifter responses ensuring proactive rather than reactive intervention. Whatever your asset is however, machinery to man power, the ability to get them working as efficiently and effectively as possible is crucial to success.

To keep up with the rapid changes and requirements of any business the way we access internet of things must move forward to. It is no longer sufficient for most businesses to rely on mains powered, large data logging units that aren’t

easily transferrable and often lead to questions around costs to deploy. Development of battery powered, cost effective, cellular devices providing flexibility and agility must be addressed to answer these requirements.

Many of our clients require solutions that help them manage their assets over large locational areas or with assets that are in difficult places to reach once deployed. The challenge is to allow insight remotely whilst management remains local, deploying their people effectively and safely to resolve any issues. Development of Bluetooth

(BLE) within remote monitoring units is a vital development in allowing field asset communication.

As we are currently working closely with the water industry, the intricate and vast pipe networks require a smart approach to monitoring and reacting. Typically to access certain points of the network it involves disrupting traffic whilst you protect

your people who manually have to take readings. Via IoT devices and BLE this same gathering of data could be done in seconds with no need to intervene unless anomalies are detected. Cutting time on investigative work and being able to deploy key people in the right location at the right time gaining huge business savings as well as having the collation of ongoing data. This example can be transferred to numerous industries with numerous assets.

The powerful insight of data manipulation and analysis can develop the ability to work on a greater understanding and predictive modelling that can maintain an organisation at the forefront of their industry. The art of effective analysis comes down to the ability to acquire quality data.

The data is the foundation to realising many aspirations around insight and knowledge that most organisations require for their future strategies. Of course, IIoT requires investment, but investment in the foundations can only lead to a strong base to build upon.

Eight wastes identification checklistThe eight wastes identification checklist from Mettler

Toledo is a template to support laboratory managers to carry out an efficiency audit of their lab. This checklist provides a simple way to measure the current status for any sized lab, and can be tailored to individual requirements.

Previously ‘The Typical 8 wastes in the laboratory’ guide introduced an explanation of these 8 wastes, with typical laboratory examples, and recommendations for how to reduce or eliminate waste in these situations.

The latest identification checklist takes it one step further by providing a template to measure the efficiency of a specific laboratory based on the occurrence of waste in the workflows.

This checklist is organised into 8 sections, based on the 8 wastes from Lean principles. It consists of a series of criteria with recommended target values that should be met. Based on the entries recorded during the audit a total score is calculated with a maximum of 33. Any scored below 20 shows significant potential for improvement.

DIGI Europe Ltd always aims to maintain a presence at various trade shows, and will be attending the IFFA exhibition in Frankfurt, between the 4th and 9th of May. IFFA is the

leading international trade fair for the meat industry and this year, DIGI Europe Ltd will be revealing three new and updated products.

The exhibition will help to get their new machines out and in front of potential customers, offering a middle ground to show people their recently developed technology. They also usually meet with other subsidiaries of the DIGI group from around the world, who often bring their customer base with them. This means DIGI Europe Ltd can promote their new machines to an extensive range of potential customers. What’s more, they can bring along their retail machines with them as well, offering a crossover of industrial and retail solutions that customers might not have access to or be aware of outside of the exhibition.

These machines are new versions of the HI-700, MI-700 and LI-700D standard machines. The HI-700 is a high speed dynamic weigh price labeller, offering flexible label handling for increased production line efficiency. The PC-based machine allows easy integration with the user’s existing machines and networking, and the dynamic weighing and high speed

labeller offer up to 120pmm, which increases productivity. The colour touch screen allows easy and quick programming and PLU selection, and the machine has a quick release conveyor system. With fast application, the labeller has a large label roll diameter and a 300dpi thermal print head.

The MI-700 is an automatic single frame weigh price labeller, with similar benefits to the HI-700 including a colour touch screen, quick release conveyor system and a 300dpi thermal print head. In addition to these, it can produce packs up to 80ppm and comes in a compact design, so its single frame can be fitted into a production line where line length is limited.

What’s more, it can be combined with a sleever/C’wrap type machine; the unique software and hardware communication package combined with the ease of a multi pin connection means the combining of these machines is a trusted and reliable process.

Finally, the LI-700D is an entry level dynamic weigh price labeller, offering a single framed module design and a three-conveyor machine. It is PC-based like the HI-700 and MI-700 machines, and due to its compact design, it can be fitted into production lines with limited line

space. Offering line speeds of up to 65ppm, its classic labeller is flexible with a choice of thermal head sizes and label applicators.

The new versions of these machines, which will be revealed at the IFFA show in May, offer higher speeds and more efficient technology. The HI-700 HS, MI-700 MS, and LI-700D LS are updated, stainless steel machines, providing adjustable conveyors for a smoother transition and in doing so will assist with accurate label placement on every pack. These new and improved devices are streamlined to offer precision when labelling items. In addition to these machines, DIGI Europe Ltd will also be showing their DPS800 manual weigh price labeller at IFFA, an established popular machine with their customers.

Recently they moved into supplying retail equipment as well as industrial, and this venture has led to DIGI Europe Ltd’s technology being used in numerous high-end stores. Indeed, this retail technology has taken off just as quickly as their industrial machines, meaning their customer base is constantly expanding.

“Because we are taking on even more customers, we are now expanding our team, as well as our premises to cater for the increasing demand. Every department at DIGI is growing, and we are placing a lot importance on all staff members within the company, by offering extra training to nurture the skills and experience we already have in the team.”

It is clear that DIGI Europe Ltd is an established expert in weigh price labelling equipment, offering specialised knowledge and experience to provide industry and retail with the most appropriate solutions for their requirements. If you would like to find out more information about DIGI Europe Ltd’s products, head to their website or use the contact details below.

Regular calibration of low pressure transmitters is a requirement of systems controlling clean rooms

throughout the pharmaceutical industry. As the sensors are often remote from the control system and its user interfaces this has usually required two people to carry out the work. One would generate the pressure manually at the transmitter, whilst in contact with a second person, via radio. The two operators would call out the values as they were attained and held. The person at the control panel would then make whatever adjustments were necessary and make the notes. The issue with this approach is that keeping the pressure constant is a challenge when looking at such a small value. It is not just a case of closing the valve on the calibrator, the pressure needs to be adjusted and chased by the technician.

The ADT 760 LLP provides a completely automated solution for this application. Using the touch screen interface the technician can programme the 760 to run the test cycle with dwell times between points. When the unit is running the tech can just walk over to the control panel and note the points, make adjustments as needed. The second technician can be getting on with another set of calibrations.

Measurements can be made in gauge or differential mode. Each model of the Additel 760 series has an option incorporating documentation and communication functions turning your 760 into a multifunction documenting process calibrator. This feature provides HART communication, task documentation and data logging.

Incremental Engineering was established to serve SMEs with quality end use engineering

components. With engineering at its core, it has over 25 years’ experience in product design, machine design, and instrumentation.

Hewlett Packard Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) technology is one of the first Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies to be able to produce batch quantity end use components with great isotropic material properties and high finish standards.

Incremental Engineering offers MJF technology to those companies who are not fortunate enough to have a system in house. The added value in using Incremental Engineering is that they operate with the feel of in-house production, offering design for Additive Manufacturing advice if required or solely as a production partner.

Using an HP MJF 4200 production system, Incremental Engineering manufacture components by layering and fusing PA12 (Polyamide or Nylon) powder in fine layers of 0.08mm thickness. All the parts are supplied free of loose powder and with

a grey finish, which can be used directly, dyed or with further finishing processes applied.

Their AM services are available on short lead-times and in one off or batch quantities, and there are no tooling or set up charges. They also offer Hybrid Manufacturing, which is a combination of AM and traditional techniques.

Using lubricants effectively and maximising their efficiency is absolutely crucial in the industrial

sector. Selecting the right lubrication products and using them in the correct quantities ensures optimum performance, reliability and longevity of expensive production machinery.

Lubricant purchases normally amount to only three percent of a maintenance budget, but lubrication-related activities can influence an estimated 30 percent of total maintenance costs. FUCHS Lubricants, a leading manufacturer of high-performance industrial oils, has seen great success with its recently-upgraded FLUIDS LIVE monitoring system.

FLUIDS LIVE is an easy to navigate web-based recording,

tracking and reporting tool with integrated KPI measurements.

It is designed to provide customers with instant access to key data, enabling faster and more informed decision making.

Keith Salt, of FUCHS Lubricants’ industrial division, said: “FLUIDS LIVE is proving extremely popular amongst our industrial customers. We have more than 100 manufacturers already signed up globally and a good number of these are in the UK.

“The idea is to obtain information from measurements such as oil sampling and vibration monitoring and to ensure we maximise asset care. It’s all designed to cater for increasing skill shortages and take the guess work away, resulting in a hugely significant saving for manufacturers.

“The software is portal driven which offers management teams from companies working within the same group the ability to view other site information and share best practices both locally and globally.”

Abanaki Corporation, a world leader in oil skimming

technology, has announced the addition of the new Oil Boss to its extensive coolant maintenance product range.

Keeping coolant clean is essential, as dirty coolant can produce smoke, bad smells, and bacterial issues which can become health hazards. The Oil Boss is designed for machining centre applications, removing tramp oil from sumps, extending coolant life and reducing onset of bacterial growth, eliminating health risks such as dermatitis.

The device pumps oil-laden fluid from the sump through a chip-blocking pre-filter to the inlet valve. Then, it is passed through

coalescing media that separates the oil from the coolant, and clean coolant subsequently returns to the sump. Skimmed oil is held in a containment area until it is easily removed using the discharge tap.

The units are small yet robust, using an effective magnetic mounting system which allows the unit to be located for easy access. The Oil Boss’s Magni-Cling technology enables the skimmer to cling to a metal surface, allowing for flexibility as the user

can clean one machine sump and then easily move the skimmer to another machine. Furthermore, the Magni-Cling technology can be used to place the Oil Boss at eye level for convenient inspection.

Alongside a range of air compressors and vacuum

pumps, BCAS offers equipment and best practice that can make a considerable impact on energy use in a compressed air system.

Of the total energy supplied to a compressor, as little as 8-10% may be converted into energy at the point of use. Minimising waste is vital, as the right approach can save over 30% of the energy used.

For example, the average leak rate of a compressed air system is 25% but some plants lose as much as 80% of their air due to leaks.

BCAS offers a comprehensive leak assessment and repair programme which has the potential to vastly improve the operation and efficiency of compressed air systems and generate significant financial savings.

Measures such as regular maintenance, system design and operator training can also contribute to reducing energy use, particularly when used in conjunction with monitoring equipment such as flow meters and data loggers.

BCAS offers energy efficiency assessments that can identify

how you can reduce the running costs of your compressed air system. Advice is also available in our recently launched ‘Guide to Compressed Air Energy Efficiency’.

As Chamois Metrology moves from strength to strength, we have a look at what’s new and exactly how the

company is helping customers to achieve their goals.

Chamois Metrology is in a unique position, being able to offer a wide range of products and services for calibration and repair of pressure, temperature, electrical, dimensional and mass instruments. With a combined experience of over 200 years under one roof, Chamois is able to calibrate, repair, train and advise customers in an unbiased way to achieve the best solution without fail.

As a UKAS Calibration laboratory, the company sees a wide range of calibration and measuring equipment which has built real world knowledge of performance and features across all makes and models.

The majority of the company’s business is conducted through the UKAS Accredited Calibration laboratory; able to offer industry leading levels of uncertainty in the calibration of pressure, temperature, electrical, dimensional and mass instruments. With average turnaround times between seven and ten days as standard, the level of service offered is impressive.

An enhanced 3 day service and site calibration is also available, minimising downtime for clients. In some cases calibration on-site is the only viable option, often due to the delicacy or size of the instrument to be calibrated. Chamois is experienced in delivering this service to keep customer equipment up and running in all instances.

Chamois was recently accredited by UKAS to ISO 17025 2017 for dimensional measurement. This new service for the company extends to orifice plates, straight edges, engineer’s squares, dial test indicators, micrometres, setting rods, spirit levels and Vernier callipers.

Chamois Metrology boasts a wealth of experience in the calibration of differential pressure cells at elevated static pressure, a service undertaken particularly frequently to the oil and gas industry. The ability to carry out calibration in house on

orifice plates gives customers the opportunity to get both of these elements calibrated in one place.

Another very important aspect of Chamois Metrology is the supply of instruments and accessories for calibration. As the sole UK importer of Additel products and with the ability, resources and experience to support instruments in the field, this part of the company is seeing rapid growth. Additel provide a range of innovative calibration products which provide automated calibration of pressure, temperature and electrical instruments in the field or in the lab/workshop. The Chamois team spend a lot of time on site with customers, working with them to solve their unique calibration challenges.

Chamois Metrology’s Jon Shan commented, “When a customer buys an instrument or accessory from us, we will to go to any length to make sure they are happy with it and that it exceeds their expectation in every way”. He went on to say, “There is a great deal of choice in the market and we are in a unique position to help the customer arrive at the solution that fits them.” The last piece in the Chamois jigsaw is training. Utilising all of the experience on offer from the team, those partaking in Chamois training courses can expect a challenging yet rewarding training experience.

Often asked for standard training, Chamois prefers to tailor training courses to customer

needs. Significantly, class sizes are kept down, typically a maximum of six people. Training in calibration, practical skills, development of calibration certificates, understanding and applying uncertainty budgets and best practise is delivered in the purpose built training room. Located amongst the labs and service workshop, clients can be given plenty of hands on training in the facility.

The future of Chamois Metrology certainly is bright as it develops its sales, training and calibration offerings, and it seems clear that everything it does will be to the highest standard and complimented with the best service in the industry.

Data Logging Specialist Company of the Month

Industrial Process News is pleased to have selected Lascar Electronics as our Data Logging Specialist Company of the Month;

with a strong emphasis on product innovation and providing fantastic customer support, Lascar Electronics are at the top of their game.

Established in 1977 and with their headquarters based in Whiteparish, Salisbury, Lascar Electronics certainly came from humble beginnings: the company started out in a garage in Essex. Fast-forward over four decades and Lascar is firmly established in four locations worldwide – Hong Kong, the US, and two sites in the UK – truly a testament to their quality of products and services.

Lascar distribute their digital displays, data logging and custom design solutions to over 100 distributors across the globe; while their globally diverse locations ensure customers are never too far from receiving support if they need it.

One of the company’s main driving forces is their unabated emphasis on continual product development and constant innovation. Lascar was founded by an engineer, Brian Currie, and is still driven by his focus on technology.

This focus has proved a success and very much remains at the core of the company, with the majority of senior managers having an engineering background. When coupled with Lascar’s commitment to providing second-to-none customer service and support, then you have the difference between Lascar and their competitors.

Today the Lascar brands include EasyLog for data loggers and PanelPilot for advanced graphic displays. EasyLog launched the world’s first USB data logger and now produces the largest range

of data loggers from any single manufacturer, while PanelPilot creates uniquely easy to use but powerful displays and interfaces. Lascar has also developed its own IoT solution, the EasyLog Cloud, which supports tens of thousands of individual sensors across the globe.

Continuous technological development means Lascar’s family of data loggers utilise varied communication platforms including WiFi, Bluetooth, USB and SMS, and measure numerous parameters including temperature, humidity, voltage, current, pressure, events and carbon monoxide.

All EasyLog products are specifically designed to provide the best possible ease of use, whilst the free software gives users an intuitive interface with which to assess data – the temperature of a given room, for example – as well as receive reports and manage their date logging solutions remotely and securely.

The PanelPilot range covers display technologies from full-colour capacitive touch TFTs, through LED and LCDs and recently added e-paper too. The top-end ACE range are perfect for easily configured industrial process control, as an alternative to high-cost dedicated HMI units, and can also carry out multi-parameter data logging. Other products

include full colour and LCD panel

meters, while the low power consumption of the e-paper display makes it perfect for hand-held equipment.

Lascar’s EasyLog range is used worldwide in an enormous variety of markets and end uses, and a brief selection of key sectors would have to include vaccine storage and the pharmaceutical cold chain, the food and beverage industries, industrial automation, facilities management, outdoor environmental data, agricultural and animal welfare, museums and exhibitions, and the energy and marine industries.

Essentially, wherever you have an asset or facility that needs monitoring, Lascar Electronics’ solutions have it covered.

Championing continuous innovation and product development

Industrial Process News is pleased to announce ICS Robotics and Automation as our Robotic Systems Company of the Month;

the Southampton based ICS Robotics has led the way in the design and manufacture of a range of automated robotic systems for 30 years, earning praise for consistently delivering their expert solutions for a variety of industries.

ICS Robotics’ strapline ‘making robots work for you’ speaks volumes about the specialists, and though it is a simple motto, it perfectly epitomises what ICS Robotics stand for and the principles which guide operations on multiple levels. I had the pleasure of speaking to ICS Robotics’ Mike Payne, who expanded a little on how this motto translates into the practice

of the company on a day-to-day basis. “At ICS we don’t just provide a robot in a box,” Mike tells me. “We provide the whole system managing the complete lifecycle of the project from concept through to delivery and beyond. As well as the robot systems we can also provide component fixturing, alongside a wide variety of special purpose equipment, as part of a complete package.”

It soon becomes clear that ICS Robotics is a customer-focused company; a commitment to ensuring complete satisfaction for the customer is of similar importance to the quality of the automated system itself.

“ICS is known as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of automated welding systems, although our experience of robotic systems spans far beyond the reach of welding. We deliver a variety of solutions from automated handling to visual inspection.” Always striving to innovate and provide the latest technologies, ICS has now added laser welding to their broad range of joining solutions.

“An emerging technology within the industry; laser welding offers a greater degree of accuracy and quicker weld times. ICS is one of the few companies in the UK offering a laser welding solution.”

Since its release in 2017, the ‘ICS ProCell’ has had a great deal of success within the industry. “The

ProCell’s many available options”, Mike explains, “allow it to be configured for a multitude of tasks such as Mig/Tig welding, handling, assembly, vision inspection, glue application and much more.” The key to the success of this relatively new range of robotic systems can be attributed to the manner in which ProCell has changed the way companies are thinking

about their automated processes. “The ability to quickly and effortlessly reconfigure, repurpose, and reposition the robot cell has been key to the ProCell’s popularity.”

This diversification of ICS Robotics’ product range goes hand in hand with the company’s expansion into new industries and client bases. Traditionally, ICS Robotics’ main customer base has been tier one automotive manufacturers – and they still are – with over 140 automated systems having being installed in this industry alone. Industry giants such as Jaguar Land Rover, Toyota and Honda have all benefited from parts being welded by ICS Robotics’ welding cells. With ICS developing their systems for other applications such as handling, inspection and assembly; there is no limit to the number of industries ICS Robotics can manufacture for.

IDEAL Networks has launched NaviTEK IE, the first purpose

built handheld network tester, designed for commissioning, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of PROFINET Industrial Ethernet networks, plus standard Ethernet IP networks. The new, rugged NaviTEK IE copper and fibre troubleshooter has been developed to simplify the process of testing both cabling and networks in Industrial Ethernet networks that utilise the PROFINET protocol. Previously, a laptop with specialist software would be required to identify and test network nodes and configuration, which could prove cumbersome in these typically ‘desk-free’ environments. The tester offers all the same features as the popular IDEAL Networks NaviTEK NT Pro, but with a range of additional tools specific to the needs of Industrial Ethernet, where packet delivery time is critical for operation. For instance, the system health check feature on NaviTEK IE enables frontline technicians to pinpoint potential issues before they become network failures and result in downtime. With an easy-to-understand traffic light system, the health check provides a quick indication of how each device is performing. Clicking on each device provides further details of the issues discovered so corrective actions can be taken. The tester uses Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) to provide accurate distance to fault data, testing every wire in the data cable, not every pair, to help isolate issues that other testers cannot find and can be customised to support standard and non-standard cabling configurations. For more information, visit www.idealnetworks.net.

Health & Safety News

Lanes Group plc has passed five rigorous audits to retain national accreditation for

transport fleet management and safe driving standards. The drainage specialist has achieved, through re-auditing, the Bronze accreditation for its UK transport fleet under the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS).

FORS is used by companies operating across the UK to benchmark standards in fleet management and safety.

During February 2019, five different independent

assessors audited five Lanes depots – selected at random as part of the annual accreditation renewal process. All five achieved the required standard. All Lanes drivers covered by the scheme have also completed three online e-learning courses over the last 12 months – a new requirement, in line with moves to make FORS more rigorous year-on-year.

During 2018, the Lanes HSQE team has worked with transport managers to use vehicle tracking data to encourage safe driving by teams based at 22 depots and its Severn Trent Water and Anglian Water utility hubs. This resulted in a 70% reduction

in occasions where the tracking system recorded speeds exceeding road speed limits by 10% or more.

Bronze accreditation confirms that an operator employs good transport practices and complies with the requirements laid out by the FORS Standard. This includes demonstrating dedication to driver and vehicle safety, combined with improving operating practices through effective monitoring of fuel and tyre usage.

Transport fleet accreditation success boosts road safety

Working in potentially explosive atmospheres is hazardous enough without having concerns that the voltage being

supplied to temporary lighting is no longer within certified limits.

How can anyone be absolutely sure what voltage is being supplied, especially in a typical, long cable FPSO situation? Could it be one volt more or less than the certified safe range? Reassurance is now available from Wolf Safety, whose latest technology gives an immediate warning when voltage either slips below or exceeds certified limits, even by just one volt.

Their SOVI™ technology – it stands for Safe Optimal Voltage Indicator – removes all doubt, giving operators the confidence that temporary lighting is operating safely, effectively and at the optimal voltage.

Unique to Wolf Safety products, the ground-breaking technology is now incorporated into its ATEX and IECEx certified Hazardous Area Temporary Lighting range, further enhancing safety in potentially explosive atmospheres.

It also ensures that a lighting solution is operating effectively and at the optimal voltage. SOVI™ is already incorporated into the LINKEX™ LED TEMPORARY LUMINAIRE LX-400 range as well as the recently updated, market leading LINKEX™ WF-300XL LED FLOODLITE range. New for 2019 is the LINKEX™ LED ATEX EMERGENCY TEMPORARY LUMINAIRE, which features the unique technology.

In the unlikely event that a light is operating at a voltage above the maximum certified limit, the beam will pulse from bright to dim; giving a clear warning that action is needed to ensure that work can continue safely in the hazardous area. However, it is more likely that issues will arise at the lower end of the voltage range. For example, if too many 24-volt lights are strung together and the transformer is overloaded, voltage could drop below the optimal level and light output will reduce incrementally as the input voltage falls.

If this does occur, SOVI™ ensures the light will pulse bright, indicating that the lamp is not within its certified voltage range, though the light itself is still safe as it is certified down to zero volts.

This differs from other ATEX lights, where a reduced voltage supply can lead to the light operating outside the certified, safe voltage range. Wolf Safety’s clear, visual warning system and ‘plug in and play’ format means there is no safety risk in connecting too many lights together.

Says Michael Morley, Wolf Safety’s Technical Director: “Even if operators are working some distance from the lamp they are alerted about a power supply issue and made aware that something needs to be done. If the voltage is too high, the product must be turned off. Without SOVI™, the operator has to check the voltage is correct and safe, while continuing to work in the hazardous area.

In some cases a qualified electrician has to be on hand to do the checks but not with SOVI™, which tells operators when there’s an issue. If input voltage falls below the optimal level SOVI™ lets operators know, so they can stay safe.”

Full details of Wolf Safety temporary lighting incorporating SOVI™ can be found at: www.wolfsafety.com/temporary-lighting

Water, Energy & Environment News

Industrial Process News is delighted to feature Moixa for our Water, Energy and Environment profile. Moixa is the UK’s leading company

for smart batteries, turning properties into mini power stations through their signature Smart Battery hardware and GridShare software.

In the past, battery energy storage has been regarded as the most efficient solution for energy storage until Moixa produced their home batteries. Revolutionaries within the energy storage market,

Moixa provides properties with cost effective, maintainable and reliable energy storage.

The Moixa Smart Battery is an example of Moixa’s expertise in developing solutions formulated to reduce the impact on the environment, by minimalising carbon emissions and utilising solar energy. This impressive battery enables users to store solar generated energy and provide clean, free energy to households.

Moixa Smart Battery offers battery storage in 3 different sizes optimised for the homes in the UK. Newest addition to the family is the 4.8kWh one, which stores larger quantities of energy than others and exceeds expectations with regards to its output of 2.4kW, notably above the average peak demand

of an everyday household. Its 2.4kW output allows the user to use the energy for most appliances and therefore reduces costs from sourcing/paying for energy from the grid.

A great addition to homes which are larger than others and thus requiring more energy, the Smart Battery turns a household into a miniature power station while also lowering energy bills through its platform, GridShare. GridShare is another way in which Moixa are able to provide renewable, sustainable energy for individuals and businesses. Designed to manage solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles, GridShare provides customers with the ability to share battery capacity with the grid and earn the owner money in return.

A compatible pair, the Moixa Smart Battery and GridShare collaborate harmoniously when used

with solar panels and soon electric vehicles. The use of solar panels enables properties to generate their own energy powered by solar energy, helping customers cut their energy bills down by 60%.

Through Moixa’s GridShare, AI can be used to manage the batteries of electrically powered vehicles in the most economical way. The customer also benefits from the electrical vehicle tariff, whereby if the vehicle is not charged during peak times, the costs associated are less than if you were to charge during peak times.

Another beneficial service which GridShare provides is its accurate prediction of how much solar generated energy will be gained throughout each day, based on weather forecasts.

Thinking of the future, Moixa are committed to their customers and provide solutions for the most effective, sustainable energy storage use. Offering memberships for GridShare, allowing customers to turn profit, while providing larger storage capabilities for users, Moixa combines the latest technology to produce environmentally responsible, customer focussed energy storage solutions – straight to your doorstep.

Energy Storage: Turning properties into mini power stations

Responding to water industry demands for a wider variety of fully packaged, factory assembled and tested dosing

plants, WES Ltd has developed a new range.

This development project was initiated when Wessex Water issued a framework tender call for Phosphorous removal systems. It has resulted in greater choice, including packages with storage sizes up to 10,000 litres.

Flexibility, size and costThe first challenge was to make these systems flexible enough to meet all control requirements and other product standards relating to different water utilities and approved suppliers. In particular, an innovative tank solution would

be necessary to ensure compatibility with most chemicals.

In addition to the need for high flexibility, there were size and weight considerations – and then every detail had to be balanced against cost to make the overall price competitive. WES also had to be economical with time and to consider risks in relation to weather effects. On top of everything else, it was essential for WES to establish that it was suitably equipped for all aspects of manufacturing, handling and transporting the largest units.

The perfect package made easyHaving presented an outline plant design, WES worked closely with Wessex Water’s internal Engineering & Construction project team on developing it to meet their specific operational needs. All of these were addressed in a cost-effective and compact package. Even the largest unit could be handled in one lift and transported on a single, non-articulated, flatbed truck.

By fully assembling and testing packages in the factory, build quality was maximised while the amount of on-site installation and commissioning activity was minimised. As well as reducing project delivery time, this mitigated the risks and site management costs associated

with weather impacts and health and safety issues.

Successful co-operationDesign, delivery and installation of the units initially ordered, for dosing of Ferric Chloride and Ferric Sulphate, took 9 months and was complete in summer 2018. So far, WES has received a total of 18 orders for supply of 5,000 and 10,000 litre systems directly to Wessex Water or via its contractors. Importantly, this has established the first formal framework co-operation between WES and Wessex Water.

Facilities Management & Cleaning News

Following a rigorous 2-day assessment, TC Facilities Management (TCFM) has successfully passed three

external management systems audits including the new ISO 45001:2018 standard. This and the other new 2015 versions for ISO 9001 and the Environmental audit ISO 14001 were all passed without any non-conformities or observations, emphasising the commitment of TCFM’s senior management to these standards.

The audit took place over two consecutive days and included a comprehensive review of company policies and processes. This was to assess TCFM’s approach to the quality (ISO 9001) and safety (ISO 45001:2018) they provide to their customers and colleagues, as well as the measures they take to minimise TCFM’s environmental impact (ISO 14001) from their operations. The new ISO 45001:2018 is believed could help, on a global level, save more lives, reduce accidents further and improve employee morale. Organisations have until March 2021 to make the transition to the new standard that came in 2018, replacing the BS OHAS 18001:2007. TCFM’s achievement in making the transition to the new standards is testament to the work of TCFM’s compliance manager

Richard Grafham who championed the transition. It also emphasises the senior management’s commitment

to these standards. Brian Mold, TCFM’s QHSE Manager said, “The successful transition to the new standard along with the renewal of the established standards clearly demonstrates TCFM’s commitment

to quality and safety in all that we do and is a tremendous reassurance to our customers that

TCFM remains a business you can trust and a huge accolade to all our staff and their hard work.”

Solenoid Valve Specialists of the Year

Industrial Process News is incredibly proud to announce that Avalco has been selected as our Solenoid Valve Specialists of the Year,

for their outstanding commitment to supplying a comprehensive range of solenoid valves to all types of industry while maintaining excellent customer service.

Established in 1996, they have over 20 years of experience in distributing their extensive stock to manufacturers across the country. They place a heavy emphasis on meeting their customers’ exact requirements, offering friendly and efficient service, high levels of customer care, and complete technical support. Based in Nuneaton, they boast the ability to provide next day delivery, and strive to offer this service wherever possible. Their products are for use in chemical, steam, air, water and vending applications, and include general purpose, techno-polymer, pinch, explosion proof, and high pressure solenoid valves, to name a few. Furthermore, Avalco is fully registered to ISO9001.

Their broad selection of solenoid valves are all manufactured in Italy by their longstanding associate ODE srl. As one of the largest manufacturers of solenoid valves in Europe, ODE srl designs and produces complete lines of the devices for machine and plant manufacturers. They also offer customised solutions, designing

the valves according to their fundamental principles of high quality, adaptability, product reliability, and excellent after sales service. With over 50 years of experience, they are constantly working towards the development of new cutting edge designs for numerous sectors, and have a distribution network that covers all the major countries. Every company in their network has been hand selected for possessing the same level of product knowledge as ODE itself, and

so Avalco are true experts in the supply of these world class solenoid valves.

Having recently made an investment in a new plant and equipment to meet the growing demand, ODE’s solenoid valves are renowned for their reliability with every product being 100% tested. With 50 years’ experience, ODE are constantly striving to develop new products in order to satisfy most industrial sectors, including vending, car wash, automation, medical, food and

beverages, water management, and chemical. ODE srl is also ISO9001:2008, ISO14001 and 18001:2007 certified.

We had the opportunity to talk to Brian Ross, the Managing Director, about Avalco’s successes over the past year: “The past 12 months have gone extremely well for us. ODE srl have increased their production, updated their product range

and hired new staff. All of these developments feed back into our company and mean we can offer more for our customers. We also had a big international meeting in Italy with all the global distributors of ODE. They revealed their range of new products, and we’re pleased to say we can now offer stainless steel filter regulators, which is a very niche market. Last year, our sales were bang on target. In this industry, if you get within 5% of your target, it’s good, and we got it bang on.”

Indeed, Avalco’s sales achievements are a testament to their dedication to maintaining their outstanding services: “It’s very uncertain times at the moment with Brexit, but we’ve done everything we can to ensure we still offer the

same level of service. We’ve increased our stock order to ordering six months in advance in order to continue to guarantee our 24 hour delivery service. Furthermore, last year we moved to new premises so we could expand our portfolio and offer a wider product range for our customers. The new location also has scope for further expansion, which means we can future-proof the company to cope with the ever-expanding demand for our products. We’re in a group with three other companies, Camozzi (automation specialists), Bonomi (valve supplier), and ATAM (electronic component supplier). Together we form The Fluid Power Centre (TFPC) group, and we all work together to help each other out.”

Recently, ODE developed their range of servo-assisted solenoid valves, now supplying 2 1/2” and 3” valves for use up to 5 bar and 15 bar with high pressure versions. Servo-assisted valves provide lower cost and power consumption compared with direct acting valves, while offering the same levels of performance in flow rate and operating pressure.

However, because they need a minimum pressure in order to open the diaphragm, they are not appropriate for zero pressure applications.

One particular product to mention is ODE srl’s revolutionary wireless system of valve control, the +SMART device. It has a PLC and Wi-Fi system integrated into it, and acts as a control system for small machines or complex sub-systems. It is designed to facilitate cabling and operation in every kind of application with all ranges of solenoid valves, and is suitable for integration into Ethernet and fieldbus environments. The user can enjoy straightforward configuration of their entire system using CODESYS, and they can program applications to suit their exact needs. The embedded controller combines economy with flexibility and outstanding performance, and the device can take over control of an entire system or serve as a lower-level controller.

If their last 12 months are anything to go by, Avalco are going from strength to strength, cementing their status as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of high quality solenoid valves and proving they are true specialists in their field. If you would like to find out more information about their full product range and services, head to their website or use the contact details below.
