Building success in unpredictable timesAs the UK comes to terms with the

uncertainties arising from Brexit and a hung parliament, the focus of this year’s Agile Business Conference will be building success during unpredictable times.

Hosted by Daniel Thornton, Programme Director at the Institute for Government, the first day of the event will feature keynote addresses from experts including Chris Roebuck, Visiting Professor of Transformational Leadership at Cass Business School London, and Dr Patrick Dixon, ranked as one of today’s 20 most influential business thinkers (Thinkers 50-Awards).

The conference, which takes place in London on 4 and 5 October, is being organised by the Agile Business Consortium, the not-for-profit body that pioneered Agile business thinking some 20 years ago. The consortium continues to be at the forefront of Agile as it expands from its IT and project management origins to enable enterprise-wide Business Agility.

Professor Roebuck, who has been a regular on the HR Most Influential Thinkers list since 2010, will reveal how to get the best from your people - including the role of emotion and

creating a “we not me” culture - and how to focus that energy on delivering organisational success so that it could deliver 10%+ on the bottom line for virtually no cost. Dr Dixon will examine how global trends are set to transform retail markets, whether in terms of demographics, agile packaging,

niche marketing, faster delivery or sustainability. Companies that correctly identify and respond to these trends will, he says, be able to delight customers with small changes that have huge impact at little cost.

Other talks will cover some of the many

ways using Agile techniques can help organisations with issues as diverse as better budgeting, managing risk and developing digital services.

The second day of the conference will feature a diverse programme of collaborative workshops and roundtables to support further learning around three main themes: Transformation and Leadership, People and Culture, and Digital Services. The keynote speakers from day one will attend and facilitate this work.

Reinforced concrete reinvented

Low and Bonar is a London-headquartered company that is globally renowned for its competency in providing high performance

materials for the building & industrial, civil engineering, coated technical textiles, interiors and transportation sectors. Manufacturing plants and sales offices are based in Europe, North America, the Middle East, India and China.

Its activities revolve around the development and supply of fibres, industrial/coated fabrics, composite materials and yarns using state-of-the-art technologies. With its suite of products, all engineered for each specific end-use, Low and Bonar assists businesses across the world to make construction sites safer, reduce carbon footprint, cut total cost of ownership and promote cleaner air and water.

The roots of the premium product brand Adfil date back to the early 90s targeting those working within the construction market with synthetic fibre reinforcements. The comprehensive Adfil product

portfolio includes standard and custom-made fibres that are readily available in measured quantities.

“We develop, manufacture and sell construction fibres to improve the durability of concrete,” summarised Manager of Technical Sales, Mark Mitchell, who is based at the company’s UK office in Hull. “Specifically focusing on additives for concrete, our customers tend to be ready mixed concrete producers, engineers and contractors.”

Delivered in paper degradable bags, plastic bags, jumbo sacks or bulk boxes, the micro and macro synthetic fibre types are all developed in accordance with EN 14889 – 2:2006 (the EC Certificate of Conformity). The flexibility of this industry quality compliant range has attracted customers seeking solutions for various applications; the materials are frequently utilised for concrete floors, pattern imprinted concrete, precast concrete products and tunnelling (for example). This popularity is largely because the advantages

of using macro and micro fibres over traditional steel mesh reinforcement have become increasingly apparent over the years. The fibre alternatives help to improve impact, abrasion & shatter resistance whilst ensuring plastic shrinkage & settlement crack reductions. They also provide post-crack ductility, moderate waste and offer significant economic, social and environmental benefits.

The synthetic blends are also easier to handle than their conventional equivalents and offer asset longevity as well as, crucially, improved safety at the construction site. Building projects can be completed in a speedier manner and all works conducted help to reduce the site’s carbon footprint.

Low and Bonar is committed to innovating and invests heavily in R&D in order to improve upon its offering. Internal and external tests at independent laboratory facilities ensure consistency and the company philosophy is centred on performance and the creation of customer value.“We are a progressive company that has been in the trade for over 100 years,” Mark concluded. “We manufacture products for construction fibres mainly in Belgium and

have a sales team operating in the UK, Belgium & India as well as a distribution network delivering solutions to customers in over 90 countries worldwide.”

To find out more about these materials please refer to the contact details provided. By reaching out to the Adfil team to source a tailor-made solution you can become a valued Low and Bonar partner whilst discussing concrete mix designs, engineered proposals and unique packaging configurations.

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag has introduced its latest all-electric injection moulding machine series to the UK

market, where the company says it will close the price and performance gap between hydraulic and all-electric machines for the automotive industry.

The new IntElect series, which made its worldwide premiere at the K Show in October 2016, is 20% smaller than its predecessors in the range, which was first introduced in 2009.

It comes in two performance categories, a standard and top-end version, both said to be designed with the automotive market in mind. The standard model is designed for applications previously run on hydraulic machines, for example the moulding of mass-produced automotive components.

The top-end option is geared to cater for even more challenging dynamic and precision applications. Included within the standard package is: fast clamp speed; high force, high speed and controlled ejector technology for the removal of components from the mould; an injection speed of 300 to 350mm per second; fast nozzle movements; cycle analysis; and a below seven second cycle time.

Distinguishable by its darker blue cladding, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag has reduced the footprint of the new IntElect by 20%. To slash production costs by reducing the complexity of stock holdings, it’s the first all-electric injection moulding machine with a standard platform worldwide.

Amtek Precision Engineers, one of the UK’s market leading suppliers of plastic injectiron mould tools

has upgraded its material handling capability in order to safely move up to eight tonnes around its workshop and finishing/assembley area.

One of the key benefits of this is that the company can now offer its customers, especially those in the caps and closures market, larger mould tools with a greater number of cavities.

Mike Lawes, Amtek’s Production Manager, commented: “We are renowned for multi-cavity moulds that have 96 impressions. Now, thanks to our new material

handling system and the well-planned workflow through our entire facility, from reciept of the raw

material right through to inspection and dispatch, we can offer tools with up to 128 impressions.”

This increase in cavities could make significant difference to the customer as Mike pointed out: “The cycle time for the tool might be around six seconds, which equates to around one million cycles per year. The additional tool capacity could result in an extra 33 million parts being produced.”

Storage tank maintenanceFor owners of above ground process storage tanks,

including both atmospheric and pressurised storage systems such as bullets and spheres, tank inspection programmes are normally based around EEMUA 159 and/or API 653. According to both of these standards, the purpose of an inspection is to determine if tanks are safe for continued service in terms of their mechanical integrity.

To help tank owners comply with ever-increasing stringent regulations, risk-based inspection (RBI) systems and advanced non-destructive testing (ANDT) methods can be used to assess the condition and mechanical integrity of an individual

tank or a complete tank farm. This tank-specific RBI approach enables owners to focus their inspection on those assets that have the highest probability of potential problems.

The most effective approach to tank inspection blends the regulatory compliance to current codes and standards with Risk Based Inspection and Advanced Non Destructive Testing methods. The Tank Specific RBI ap¬proach allows owners to concentrate inspection on those assets that have the highest probability of potential problems. It also considers the consequences of such a failure. As a result, Out-of-Service inspection of tanks can be recommended that exhibit

potential problems, while continuing to operate assets that are in good condition.

The continued operation of healthy tanks, along with large reductions in budget spent on preparing tanks for traditional internal inspections (including cleaning, degassing and waste disposal) provides tank owners with better profitability and improved operational effectiveness.

New Poundfield contract makes it a nuclear hat-trickPoundfield Products Ltd, the Suffolk-based market-

leading manufacturer of quality precast concrete, has announced another contract win to supply the nuclear industry – the third in the last year.

From next month, Poundfield will be supplying a number of Alfablocs to I D Corcoran who are currently working at Sizewell A on the decommissioning of the power station project.

The interlocking Alfablocs will be used as a shield wall

surrounding the active waste facility building as a means to reduce ‘shine’ or radiation. The product is typically used for the retention and storage of bulk materials, but offers versatility for use in many other sectors as well.

The Sizewell A win comes hot on the heels of two major contracts to supply Alfabloc’s to the Hinckley Point C nuclear power station, which is currently being constructed.

In spring of last year Poundfield was commissioned to

supply 80 Alfabloc units, followed by another 70 in the autumn to the Somerset station, which uses the same technology as that for the prospective station at Sizewell C.

In both cases the products have been used as onsite storage for materials, aggregates and bulk storage for the groundworks being carried out on the site.

William Hughes shares spring making secrets

Ever wondered how springs are made? William Hughes Ltd, one of the UK’s foremost spring makers, has

produced a video demonstrating the manufacturing processes involved in producing the hundreds of thousands of bespoke springs delivered to customers each week. To see the video, just go to YouTube and enter ‘William Hughes – A Better Spring.’ The video follows the evolution of a small compression spring from concept and design through coil winding and high temperature stress relief.

Each spring is then ground flat at both ends before being subjected to shot peening in order to achieve the ten million cycles required for its working life. Next comes an inorganic finishing treatment called Delta Tone where colour is added to the spring for identification purposes. Finally, the springs are subjected to scragging – a pre-stressing process that compresses the spring to near solid and then load tests each and every one to ensure that they meet the tight tolerances required.

BLFT Turbine Meter installation for Sir Bob Geldof’s Winery

Bell Flow Systems has recently supplied a Stainless Steel Turbine Meter to Awash Winery in Ethiopia. Not

only is this winery the largest in the country, but it is also part owned by UK equity firm chaired by Sir Bob Geldof.

Awash currently bottles seven million litres of wine annually. It plans to boost production under 12 brands, including the well-known Axumite, Awash and Gouder names.

Gouder is a national brand Geldof first tasted in 1984, when he got back from areas of drought in the north that had taken the world by shock. The 1984-85 Ethiopian famine had prompted many such as Geldof to galvanize the international community for help. He is known to be a force behind a LiveAid concert, a phenomenal event that was the first to get broadcast live across the world for the first time, and as a result raised over 100 million dollars for charity.

Geldof says he decided in 2013 to get involved in the winery hoping to see the factory expand and improve in order to provide additional employment. The transfer in technology and skills, he said, expedites development and ends dependency in Ethiopia.

The Turbine meter is the second unit to be installed in the production process as the original meter, supplied through a third party has proved to be accurate and reliable. The BLFT turbine meter features a high +/-1% accuracy and is constructed from stainless steel ensuring it ideal for the measurement of low to medium viscosity liquids. As standard meters include a long battery lifetime of 4 years and a choice of 4-20mA signal, pulse outputs and programmable alarms.

New measurement solution for water vapour in heat treatment processesMBW manufacture high performance

chilled mirror dew point hygrometers used in metrology and industrial applications. The precision and stability of dew point mirrors is so good that they are used as transfer standards in many humidity/moisture measurement applications and for traceable calibration.

Heat treatment processes such as annealing, sintering and case hardening depend on the measurement of water vapour in the reducing gas. With precise measurement and control, product quality, gas and energy use are optimised.

The new 573 is the latest in a long line of industrial chilled mirror hygrometers from MBW. Its form factor is identical to the previous generation DP3 and DP30 instruments, so existing users can easily drop in the 573 to existing 19” racks. Its integrated measuring head is front panel mounted so that routine maintenance of the measurement cell is easy. Integrated test functions allow the user to check both

measurement stability and operational range without removing the instrument.

Gas sampling is simplified with the 573. An integrated sample pump with variable speed controls and flow measurement mean that measurement set up is simple. Sample pressure measurement is a standard feature that ensures dew point measurements are precise. For high dew point applications, the 573 also features a temperature controlled internal sample path and external heated sample line controller that prevents condensation from forming.

MBW have supplied instruments for heat treatment applications for more than 50 years. This experience combined with typical Swiss engineering quality and operational lifetimes often more than 25 years, means that MBW instruments are widely used within the metal industry. Compared with lower cost sensor based solutions that struggle to maintain performance in aggressive environments, a

chilled mirror instrument provides lower cost of ownership, and most importantly, enables process engineers to deliver quality and efficiency improvement.

When Parker Precision set itself

on a course to improve productivity, precision and output, the Bilston business acquired a Mazak QuickTurn 200MSY turning centre equipped with a Hainbuch collet chuck. The impact of the new investment soon snowballed into a raft of new machine purchases.

Installed in 2012, the Mazak was purchased for its sub-spindle turning capability with the aim of reducing second operations, part handling, potential for error and of course improving throughput. The impact of the Mazak QuickTurn rapidly noted the arrival of a second 200MSY, a 250MSY and a Hyper Quadrex – all fitted with collet chucks from workholding experts Hainbuch. In addition to this, the AS:9100 certified manufacturer has purchased three sliding head turning centres from Star and a 5-axis VariAxis i500 machining centre.

Machining batches from 20 to over 200 on the manually loaded chucking machines, the clamping forces, concentricity, accuracy and ability to delicately hold machined surfaces without marking the parts were all considerations for Parker Precision. These considerations were all overwhelmingly solved by the Hainbuch Spanntop Combi dead-length collet chucks. The components machined at Parker Precision are particularly challenging with considerable and often heavy duty milling operations on materials that vary from steel through to titanium, Monel, beryllium copper and much more. Not an issue for the Hainbuch range.

Pendle chooses Boplan flexible safety barriers

Pendle Forklift Services of

Earby in Lancashire have chosen Boplan HP Plus pedestrian barriers to protect staff, trainees and visitors at their Forklift Training Centre. Made from flexible polymer, the HP Plus handrails are the strongest version of the Boplan FLEX IMPACT® handrails. By adding a third

extra horizontal rail and heavier posts, they safely separate

and shield pedestrians from high-risk traffic zones where constant heavy manoeuvring takes place.

The barriers are made from a polymer which is flexible and shock absorbing. They will absorb impacts safely and then return to their original shape and position with no loss of ongoing performance. Also, the damage caused to the FLT will be far less severe than if it hit a metal barrier. The impact to the driver is reduced, minimising any injuries.

To ensure that the product is backed by an equally high standard of service, Boplan has opened an office in Wolverhampton to deliver a local service for the UK. David Smith, Manager Boplan UK said “We offer a wide range of quality and innovative products with specialist in-house design and development teams.”

Company shows it cares with feeling appWastewater specialist Lanes

Group has created a digital app that asks its people: ‘How are you feeling today?’

The new feeling app gives the opportunity for five responses, from very unhappy to very happy, and asks colleagues if they want help with any concerns. If they select ‘Yes’, the app sends an alert to the appropriate line manager to see what support can be offered. The feeling app has been created by Lanes Utilities, Thames Water’s wastewater network services maintenance partner.

Lanes Utilities director Andy Brierley said: “We want to let our teams know we care about their wellbeing, because that reflects our values as a business. We also see staff wellbeing as being integral to workplace safety and the way customers experience our service.”

Wastewater engineers are prompted to respond to the

app as they log on to a digital workplace operating system on their mobile phones at the start of every shift.Since the app was introduced in November 2016, the number of engineers indicating they are ‘very unhappy’ has fallen from 8% to less than 1%.

In that time, senior managers have helped colleagues with a range of concerns, including financial problems, family relationships, conflicts with colleagues at work, and dissatisfaction with career opportunities.

Qimarox introduces improved standard OEM stretch hooder

Optimise picking

After Qimarox added a standard OEM stretch hooder to its product range last year, the manufacturer of material

handling components has now released an improved version of the machine. What’s new about the stretch hooder is the patented concept whereby the tensioning arms, which stretch the stretch hood over the products, function independently in separate guideposts. The new OEM stretch hooder was introduced at the Interpack trade fair earlier this year which took place in Düsseldorf, Germany. The lack of a framework (in which the tensioning arms are traditionally connected) improves the flexibility of the design of the standard stretch hooder. The position of the guideposts is determined in the project specifications, allowing the stretch hooder to adapt to project specifications. This opens up the possibility of processing pallets from two different directions, allowing the machine to be used in corners. The concept is furthermore completely standardised and the machine fully modular. This makes the stretch hooder suitable for many different projects.

This extremely compact stretch hood machine has four tensioning arms that can stretch a stretch hood taut and pull

it over the loaded pallet. When the tensioning arms release the stretch hood, the boxes, bags or other products on the pallet can no longer move due to the elasticity of the film. Because the four tensioning arms can move horizontally in two directions, the stretch hooder can hood any size of pallet.

What makes the machine unique is its lack of power-hungry technologies such as pneumatics and hydraulics to power the tensioning arms. Energy consumption is thus minimised, allowing end customers to save up to €3,500 on energy costs each year. In addition, the machine excels in ease of maintenance.

5S is often misunderstood and widely thought of as just a housekeeping activity. While housekeeping is important,

5S has a much wider scope.

5S relates to workplace organisation - a gateway to beginning the LEAN journey, whilst engaging the workforce throughout

the development and use of ‘Standards’ and ‘Practices’.

5S can be used as a method of gauging an organisation’s approach to its business. An evaluation of the workplace, using the principles of 5S can quickly provide a clear picture of an organisation’s capability for continuous improvement and visual management standards.

The 5S steps: n Sort – Getting rid of items no longer needed n Straighten – Organising the workplace around the tasks n Shine – Cleaning the work area and equipment n Standardise – Setting standards n Sustain – Maintaining the standards you have put into

place

The continuing success of 5S depends on the discipline of the team to use audit documents and should be a key performance indicator (KPI), scored and reviewed during the Gemba activity at an agreed frequency by responsible owners.

A systematic and methodical approach will allow teams to organise their workplace in the safest and most efficient manner. This is equally applicable and successful in any industry helping to achieve immediate results.

Efficient line feed systems

Every production line manager is looking for ways to maximise efficiency and improve productivity levels while driving

costs down. However, all too often there is a lack of time or resources to justify the changes needed to develop a streamlined, flexible solution to achieving such gains. The integrated approach of SSI Schaefer brings together a wealth of disciplines, experience

and expertise needed to devise and implement tailored, practical and efficient solutions to help manufacturers improve their efficiency, competitive position and profitability.

From Storage to LinesideSSI Schaefer is working in partnership with MoTuM, in which it is the majority shareholder, and now offers a comprehensive range of AGVs (automated guided vehicles), automated stackers and reach trucks for different applications. The complex and intelligent AGVs can be employed for the transport

of pallets, totes and cases and they utilise ‘Swarm Technology’ controlled by SSI Schaefer’s logistics software WAMAS®, which handles planning, control and checking of all goods, information and resource flows.

The AGVs can be used for the responsive and precise replenishment as part of a picking process

and supply to lineside manufacturing operations. The swarm intelligence of the AGVs means that they can communicate with one another and organise themselves independently when it comes to completing tasks efficiently. If, for instance, an operator removes a pallet from a warehouse storage location to an AGV, a replenishment command is triggered with the next free vehicle will source and deliver replenishment stock, if available. Once the AGVs have arrived at their destination, they are able to automatically place the pallets in a lineside supply position, storage or shipping location. In order to maximise the performance and availability of the vehicles, MoTuM has equipped the AGVs with a highly efficient battery system (‘2 Lite Battery Solution’) with which it is possible to charge the vehicle completely in just eight minutes.

Cruising through production SSI Schaefer‘s Autocruiser has been designed and built with production in mind. It represents a less expensive and more flexible alternative to a conventional conveyor system, and consists of transport carriers operating on rail structures which are easy to extend and modify, making this a versatile and scalable solution. Each carrier is automatically electrically charged as it moves along the track. The standard system is capable of transporting loads of up to 30 kg in weight,

although it can be modified to accept greater payloads if necessary. It is easy to assemble and build and can be installed by a customer’s own maintenance team before being finally commissioned by SSI Schaefer. This approach helps operators save money on the installation costs of the system and further costs savings – up to 70% – can be made in energy efficiency in comparison to forklift trucks.

Lining up for assemblyAGVs, the Autocruiser transport system, or even simple conveyors can be used to transfer goods to and from assembly areas. The ergonomic pick@work assembly workstation system is a stand-alone solution which is based upon Pick-by-Light technology. Its graphical user interface allows the user to create a complete a Pick-by-Light application without specialised IT knowledge and this includes the integration of an order database, installation of control elements, allocation of storage locations and a “guided work station” operation. This system displays product images on a monitor while sequencing the correct parts and guiding the operator through the assembly and build process.

With high operational reliability and flexible application possibilites, conveyor belts are indispensible for the

transport of bulk goods in industry today. Transportation lines and material streams are important aspects of every production plant. They need to be cost-effective, efficient and above all reliable in continuous operation. A true all-rounder in transport systems for bulk materials is the VecoBelt pipe conveyor from Vecoplan.

The VecoBelt is suitable for conveying bulk materials such as wood chips, refuse-derived fuels, meat and bone meal or wood shavings. The forward-moving VecoBelt conveyor runs inside a tube and not on rollers like normal conveyor belts. The belt runs on a cushion of air; low friction losses and quiet operation are therefore guaranteed. The fully enclosed system is particularly suited to the safe transportation of dust-laden materials.

In recent years, Vecoplan has made some optimisations to the components and further developed the technology of the VecoBelt series (500/800 and 1000 belt width). The return belt now also runs in an enclosed housing,

supported by a return air duct. This gives customers 100% certainity that no material can fall or trickle down, for example in the area of the return rollers.Another new edition is that Vecoplan equips the VecoBelt with two scrapers at every drive station. The pre-head scraper and hard metal scraper can be adjusted from the outside, and tensioning the scraper with the ratchet is quick and easy to do. The pre-head scraper is flexible yet stable enough to remove impurities on the belt.

A further technical improvement has been added to the weight tensioning stations. Additional scrapers on the drive stations have been added here to prevent impurities from adhering to the belt.

Intellectual property – are you IP aware?

Does your company develop new

products, processes and ideas? If you want to minimise the chance of being copied by your competitors, then effective intellectual property protection is essential.

A patent is the most valuable form of protection and can be sought for relatively small

incremental improvements in existing technology as well as new products and processes, especially when those improvements overcome a technical problem. Effective protection can also be sought via registered designs, trade marks and copyright.

Prior to launching a new product, it is important to establish that you will not infringe rights belonging to others by carrying out freedom to operate searches. Existing patents can also provide a valuable source of information, and so a review of previously published patents can provide an understanding of what has already been developed in your technological area, which can also help steer your own research.

Patents can be licensed and assigned and if you are seeking investment or eventually hope to sell your business, then the existence of a patent portfolio can help increase the value of your company. The UK also offers favourable tax incentives to companies that derive income from patented inventions.

Traceability through direct product identification

High quality standards always apply to the

production and use of items in the medical sector. Unique identification for traceability is essential, and can be achieved without labels by Direct Part Marking, whereby the data is permanently marked onto the product itself. Different marking methods can be used depending on the material, type of surface and the item’s final usage – laser marking is most commonly used

in the medical sector, but electrochemical and dot peen marking systems can also be used. Once marked, products can be verified using optical inspection equipment, which can be used to decode the smallest of DataMatrix codes.

The Ostling Group has provided marking systems to the medical, aerospace, automotive and engineering sectors for over 30 years and offers a complete range of direct part marking solutions including electrochemical, dot peen and laser systems.

With headquarters in Germany, the Ostling Group operates worldwide with subsidiaries in Europe, USA and Asia Pacific.

IPF at the forefront of cutting edge medical technology

Belinda Gatland, a Dubai resident has

this week received the region’s first-ever fully 3D printed prosthetic leg.

Gatland is an equine physiotherapy specialist who severely injured her left leg in a horse racing accident in the UK when she was in her early 20s. The leg had twisted badly, and according to Gatland, the bones below her knee were “shattered to smithereens.” She started to suffer from

necrosis and at the age of 40, after nine fruitless operations, she finally opted to have the leg amputated below the knee. Then, as the muscles near her knee began to shrink and waste, she had to wear countless new conventional prosthetics.

Earlier this week, she was fitted in the UAE with the region’s first fully 3D-printed prosthetic leg. Gatland now has a new lease of life as the leg allows her to resume horse riding in comfort.

The leg, which was made in Germany, Bulgaria and England (Here at IPF Ltd) in separate parts and fitted in Dubai, costs far less than a traditional sculpted prosthetic. For a 3D-printed prosthetic compared to the high-end conventional ones, the cost is reduced, patient comfort is increased dramatically due to customisation using 3D scanners, and more importantly, the speed of production is increased.

While 3D printing is fast emerging in health care, it is relatively new in prosthetics. IPF have worked collaboratively with our client on this new technique to offer a cheaper, more convenient option, with tailor-made printed sockets being a huge benefit for amputees. With 3D printing, the specifications of the patient can be delivered using a computer to ensure a first-time perfect fit.

IDC produces ready-made secure electronic IoT modules to save time, cost & risk

Electronic devices for

medical patients are rapidly becoming wireless and connected to meet the changing needs of users. IDC’s experience has shown that many

manufacturers want to incorporate this technology, but have concerns about managing the safe transfer of data, as well as the associated development costs. With this in mind, IDC has created ready-made IoT modules that can be integrated with electronic devices for a huge range of applications.

With IDC’s wide experience in RF, wireless, network protocols and low power micro-electronics, the team developed a series of flexible, low-cost IoT modules to suit the diverse

range of medical applications for connected & smart devices.

Speaking about the benefits of the modules, IDC’s MD, Stephen Knowles, said, “It is not always necessary for manufacturers to develop bespoke electronic solutions. This is a perfect example of how clients can benefit from our IoT expertise by using proven, ready-made IoT modules to save development time, cost and risk. Data safety and hacking of IoT devices is becoming an increasing concern for consumers and manufacturers so we have created modules which come with robust security providing end-to-end encryption, which means data is encrypted before it is sent and then further encrypted while being sent for added reassurance.”

IDC currently has two different IoT modules that can be incorporated within clients’ electronic devices. For medical applications these can be validated to ISO 60601 for hardware and ISO 62304 for software.

Hydra-Cell metering pumps hold all the aces

Verderhus® screw channel centrifugal pumps

There are only two common pump

types that purport to guarantee a fixed delivery volume over time and against varying back pressures… reciprocating diaphragm pumps and plunger pumps.

Traditional diaphragm pumps guarantee the volume but deliver it with high pulsation while plunger pumps offer a smoother flow but suffer seal wear that causes leaks and impairs volumetric accuracy over time.

Unique Hydra-Cell pumps offer the benefits of each type without the drawbacks. Having multiple diaphragms in a single pump head guarantees the volumetric accuracy of a conventional metering pump but with very low pulsation, removing the need for pulsation dampeners in many instances.

Hydra-Cell pumps are also more economical than traditional diaphragm metering pumps, in terms of acquisition, spare parts and energy costs. At a given flow and pressure, a traditional diaphragm pump with a 15kW motor can usually be replaced with a Hydra-Cell® metering pump with a 5kW motor. Having a compact footprint, a Hydra-Cell will also free up valuable real estate, so critical in many applications.

Unlike plunger pumps, Hydra-Cells have no dynamic seals and offer 100% containment of the pumped liquid. They have no seals through which hazardous fluids might escape or through which air could enter the system on the suction stroke to cause degradation or crystallisation of the pumped liquid.

Meeting or exceeding the performance requirements of API 675 and available with ATEX approval, Hydra-Cell pumps are fast becoming the pump of choice for metering and dosing.

Verderhus® screw channel

centrifugal pumps combine the best features of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps. They define a new standard for low head, high flow pumps. The Verderhus® pumps have a large clearance screw impeller, which gently feeds product into the pump chamber. This allows the product to be efficiently transferred into the discharge line and allows for large solids to be easily pumped.

Verderhus® features a unique impeller designed for high efficiency and low NPSHr pump action, lowering both energy usage and operational costs, generating a lower overall cost of operation and maintenance. In addition to this, the screw impeller is ideal for high solid contents and viscous liquids.

Unlike traditional screw channel pumps, Verderhus® has a unique ability to overcome wear due to abrasives with Externally Adjustable Clearance to restore optimum efficiency. Verderhus® pumps are run with a positive head and require no external lubrication as bearings and seals sit in their own oil bath. This makes this pump a great option for applications like:

n Biogas treatment n Chemical processing n Construction n Food and Beverage n Industrial Processing n Mining Industry n Paper and Pulp Industry n Pet Food Processing n Slaughter Houses n Power Stations

Verderhus® pumps are available with various motor and sealing options for most difficult media in order to offer best chemical, corrosion and cavitation resistance for applications above.

The M5000 IP68plus is a battery operated

electromagnetic flow meter designed for water metering and management. It is designed to meet the highest demands of water metering applications assuring the user of reliable and accurate measurements with low maintenance. The meter comes certified to OIML R49 and MID MI-001 providing a meter that conforms to the requirements throughout Europe and the world.

With many water metering applications it is often found that the meter will be submersed and it is essential that the meter will still work in these situations. The M5000 IP68plus as its name suggests is IP68 rated suitable for continuous immersion and the integral model can still be operated whilst immersed.

Another constraint can be the lack of power supply in remote areas, but the M5000 is battery powered and offers up to 20 years life allowing the meter to work without the worry of regular maintenance. With many meter technologies there is a requirement for straight sections of pipe before and after the meter, which limits the installation position and often requires pipe modifications, however the M5000 IP68plus requires no straight pipe sections making it a great option where installation points are limited.

The M5000 also boats and internal data logger function to monitor water usage that can be accessed by the IrDA interface avoiding opening the front panel of the device. There is also the added option of a GSM/GPRS modem to transmit the logged data.

Smart robotic fabrication

Optimas introduces cable protection for extreme environments

Making the best, slimmer

The world’s leading ropeway producer Doppelmayr, Austria,

has been utilizing igm robots since many years. Due to reconstruction of the production facility, automatic welding system of transport frames had to be reconsidered. Focus was set on simplifying the part’s design, reduction of manpower and the cycle time as well as increasing the fabrication quality.

The existing robot cell was replaced by a fully automatic industry 4.0 ready overall solution consisting of one handling- and two welding robots. With this smart robotic fabrication, it is possible to manufacture five different frame types. To handle the different

geometries of the various components a fully automatically gripper exchange system is realised.

Following the welding stages, an automatically measuring stage is integrated for quality control where each part

is controlled on its given tolerance range. Finally welding spatters are removed and the complete part is palletised at a transition stage.

Within this project, a semi-automatic manufacturing process has been turned into a fully automated process, which is completely programmable offline. Doppelmayr’s production rate has risen up to 2500 transport frames per year. The reduction of manpower values with two hours per part which leads to an overall reduction of 5000 hours per year.

What do your motors really do?In 1969, the first home security system was born, consisting

of four peepholes and a camera that could be moved to look through any of them, broadcasting the images to a monitor. Nowadays, we can now stream and view a feed of our home security cameras on our mobiles, giving homeowners greater piece of mind. Here, Markus Brettschneider, of ABB’s food and beverage program, explains how food plant managers can add a similar level of connectivity to retrofit most motors with smart sensors to bring their plants to the digital age.

Industry as a whole is utilizing technologies and solutions enabled through the industrial internet of things (IIoT). Gartner predicts that 25 billion devices will be connected to the internet of things by 2020, with some agencies predicting even double this amount.

This presents plant managers with a conundrum. Most food manufacturing and processing plants currently have motors powering essential equipment such as mixers, conveyors and packaging machines. These motors are just motors and do not play in the same league as the other intelligent devices in their factories.

With years of service often left in the motors, it’s difficult for plant managers to justify replacing motors that work effectively for the sake of an upgrade with any smart features. However, there are alternatives to a complete overhaul in order to connect motors to the IIoT.

Instead of investing in new, more intelligent / smart equipment, plant managers should invest in sensors that provide similar functionality to connected devices. For example, ABB offers smart sensors, which can be fitted to almost any standard low voltage induction motor. The pocket-sized sensor, dubbed ABB Ability Smart Sensor, is directly attached in a couple minutes to the motor’s frame, without wiring.

By using sensors that feed performance data to the cloud through a smartphone or gateway solution to a secure server,

plant managers can bring their motors up to date with the IIoT. This data gives plant managers a full picture — even on mobile devices — of how their motors are working, without having to carry out dangerous hands-on monitoring. Plant managers can then carry out condition based or predictive maintenance, rather than periodic maintenance.

Using the right method to monitor motor condition, enables plant managers to reduce unplanned downtime by up to 70 per cent. This is particularly important in the food and beverage industry, where even a short downtime can be extremely costly. Infrastructure failures in this industry cost up to $75,000 per hour and have a serious impact on seasonally produced items such as sugar. This is a cost that plant managers can avoid by using the right performance insight and awareness.

An increased awareness of the condition of any motor also leads to a better awareness of how an entire system is performing. For example, a motor overheating or burning out may indicate a problem elsewhere in the production line, such as a line moving too fast and producing waste. Eliminating this problem could improve energy efficiency by up to ten per cent.

Motors, the heart of the food and beverage plant, don’t have to be left behind in the age of the IIoT. Just like a home security camera being connected to your mobile phone, a smart sensor could give a motor a new lease of life, making it perform as an integral part of the data-rich factory and providing all the additional benefits that this creates.

Bearing the load for longevityWe’ve all tried it – carrying our bags from

the weekly food shop into the house in one go, to avoid an extra trip to collect the rest. Here, Chris Johnson, managing director of specialist bearing supplier, SMB Bearings, explains a different kind of load – and how a bearing’s ability to deal with it can help prolong bearing life.

While our arms can deal with an extra heavy load once in a while, bearings may not cope as well.

Approximately ten per cent of bearing failure is caused by an unsuitable choice of bearing and such failure can be extremely costly. As the global market for bearings is predicted to reach $83.3 billion by 2020, correct estimation of bearing load is no small matter.

Deceptive dataAs well as size and material, bearings can be categorised by load rating. However, these ratings can be deceptive.

For example, a dynamic load rating indicates the radial load that a bearing can endure for one million inner ring rotations before the first signs of fatigue develop.

While that sounds a lot, a bearing operating at 5,000 rpm with the maximum dynamic load would last just over three hours.

Unless plant managers and maintenance engineers are happy to replace their bearings

every few hours, they should understand that bearings should not normally be subjected to anywhere near these loads.

To get the best life from your bearings, keep the load between six and twelve per cent of the bearing’s dynamic load rating, not forgetting that stainless steel bearings have load ratings up to 15 per cent lower than chrome steel bearings.

Overbearing weaknessUnder excessive load, bearing steel suffers early fatigue. Sub-surface cracks occur, eventually spreading to the bearing raceway in the form of flaking or “spalling”. Early signs are typically increased vibration and a rise in bearing temperature.

Excess loading can also be caused by insufficient internal clearance where the play in the bearing is reduced too much by tight shaft or housing fits. The same can occur

thanks to an out-of-round shaft or housing or an excessive axial preload.Static radial overloading can also be an issue, causing the balls to make indentations on the bearing raceway. This is known as brinelling and greatly increases vibration, drastically shortening bearing life. This can also occur if the bearing or component is dropped or an incorrect fitting procedure is used.

Long life loadingTo increase the life of your bearings, avoid sudden impact loads, pay attention to internal clearance and shaft/housing roundness and try not to run the bearing at more than twelve per cent of its dynamic load rating.

Remember, inappropriate loads cause increased fatigue and risk of bearing failure. Just like when your arms get tired during heroic efforts to carry a weeks’ worth of food into the house in one go. The difference is that tired arms don’t cost hundreds or thousands of pounds in plant maintenance or hundreds of thousands in downtime.

Fulton’s steam remedy for Neal’s Yard helps to increase output

Fulton Limited – the leading heat transfer specialist – has supplied an oil-fired, skid-mounted steam boiler

system to Neal’s Yard Remedies, a UK-based manufacturer of natural, organic health and beauty products including essential oils, moisturisers, shower gels and soaps. The 60J oil-fired boiler was supplied with the necessary ancillary items including hot-well, water softening, chemical dosing and blowdown vessels.

Commenting for Neal’s Yard, a spokesperson says: “The Fulton boiler was suited to the processes demanded from Neal’s Yard Remedies and was of a style and type that was ideal for the location of the company’s new plant room, which is situated on a mezzanine floor.”

This is Neal’s Yard’s first steam boiler installation and it replaces an old electric element heating process, which used de-ionised water – an important ingredient in most products – introduced into small mixing vessels and heated using electric elements to produce a steam jacket. The new process line uses steam from the Fulton boiler to provide indirect heat – in excess of 90 degrees – to a heating pot containing products such as

coconut oil. Two larger mixing vessels on the same line are also indirectly heated and contain only naturally-occurring products, blended to produce cosmetics including hand lotions, shampoos, face polishes, etc.

While the new process line features a much larger heating pot and mixing vessels, Fulton’s boiler system quickly raises steam and bring the vessels up to temperature, making it a very efficient way for the company to produce the indirect heat required for its processes.

The skid-mounted Fulton system has been designed to future-proof the Neal’s Yard operation and allow for the addition of a second boiler, which will be used during maintenance and shutdown periods and to cope with increased demands in throughput.

“The combination of larger vessels and a move to a steam-based process has enabled us to more than doubled the potential throughput of the new line.” says the Neal’s Yard spokesperson.

The Fulton name has been synonymous with steam since the company first introduced the vertical tubeless steam boiler in 1949 and Fulton was established in Bristol in 1966. Today, Fulton is still one of the world’s leading manufacturers, producing an unrivalled range of heat transfer solutions, including steam and thermal fluid systems, but increasingly these are ordered by customers as part of bespoke turnkey systems designed to meet exacting specifications.

Fulton’s renowned ‘J’ Series vertical gas- and

oil-fired steam boilers includes eight models covering outputs from 96 to 960 kg/h. Its tubeless design, invented by Fulton, eliminates the coils and tubes traditionally used in steam raising plant and enables the Series ‘J’ to raise its full steam output in just 20 minutes. The simple design and robust construction from top quality materials make them ideal for arduous applications in a wide range of industries.

Fulton’s heat transfer solutions can be delivered as fully-prefabricated plant rooms or complete skid-mounted units, built to fit a prepared location and connect direct to pre-installed services. Using the latest CAD equipment, its design team can accommodate the most sophisticated engineering specifications in surprisingly compact spaces, locating components in the best possible position to suit the installation.

Further information on the products and services available from Fulton can be found at: www.fulton.co.uk, by emailing: [email protected] or by calling: +44 (0)117 972 3322.

Jet dispensing technology

Gentle shot blasting of aluminium components

EFD’s PICO Pµlse valve

and PICO Toµch controller make it possible to dispense very extract, repeatable micro-deposits as small as 0.5 nL at up to 500Hz continuous with 1500Hz maximum bursts.

The PICO Pµlse non-contact jet valve’s modular design makes it possible to jet low high to high-viscosity fluids onto any surface, including uneven and tough to reach substrates. Exchangeable parts provide versatility, making the valve adaptable to a wider range of applications, so it can meet changing production demands.

A tool-free latch mechanism allows for easy removal of the fluid body for faster serviceability and maintenance, while the PICO Toµch controller features an easy-to-use intuitive touch screen interface for precise control of the PICO Pµlse valve.

Pulse time can be adjusted in increments as small as 0.01ms. Better slope control is said to deliver more repeatable deposits while preventing turbulence and air bubbles from entering the fluid – preventing deposit variation.

Walther Trowal has recently

commissioned a THM troughed belt continuous shot blast machine for a customer in Mexico that is equipped with a brand new generation of blast turbines. These turbines were specifically designed for shot blasting of aluminium components. With a considerably higher blast media throwing speed, the new turbines produce significantly shorter cycle times than the predecessor models.

The Mexican customer already operates very successfully four continuous Trowal shot blast machines. Because of their excellent performance he chose to purchase another THM machine, when he had to expand his production capacity.

The increasing sales trend at Walther Trowal indicates that ever more customers are switching to aluminium media when shot blasting aluminium components. Because of its lower bulk density aluminium media is a lot gentler than, for example, stainless steel shot.

Typical automotive forgings made from aluminium are, for example, steering knuckles or swivel bearings. Aluminium die-castings processed in THM shot blast machines can be all kinds of housings, covers or levers.

However, the impact energy of aluminium media on the work pieces is considerably lower compared to other blast media. To offset this limitation Walther Trowal developed turbines with curved throwing blades, which generate a significantly higher blast media throwing speed than straight blades. This, combined with the fact that in THM machines the turbines are located very close to the work pieces, and the media throughput is considerably higher, results in optimised energy utilisation and surprisingly short cycle times.

Developing a successful RPE

programme can help employers comply with the law, protect and educate their workers in the need for RPE and facilitate tracking of the effectiveness of deploying RPE across a workforce.

An effective workplace risk assessment will identify all factors potentially hazardous

to health in a particular work situation. In terms of respiratory hazards, it will recognise potential threats arising from environments Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) such as oxygen-deficiency and the presence of acute respiratory toxins. It will also consider the threat from combinations of respiratory hazards such as mixtures of dusts, fibres and gases.

Selecting appropriate RPE for protection in a hazardous environment requires a thorough assessment of all hazards present. A clearly defined process must be followed to determine the type of RPE to be used for the work task which could include breathing apparatus, filtering masks, powered air respirators or continuous flow airline systems. Clarity in the process for determining workplace hazards and selecting PPE is essential.

Quality of a respirator’s fit to a person’s face is critical to the level of protection it will afford against a hazard. HSE’s HSG53 document provides general advice on RPE selection. Once selected and fit tested by a competent person is required to ensure that a respirator assigned to an individual fits properly.

Employers are expected to provide training for their end users in general RPE use and specific use instructions for their RPE. Manufacturers assist by providing training aids both in physical copy and online. Manufacturers also provide training services, including certification where the level

Practicing what they preach! As part of regular

team meetings, Health & Safety matters are always top of the agenda. Those of us that regularly travel and visit customers’ electrical substations are only too aware of the potential risks. We have plenty of procedures and documents that help us manage these environments, but when it comes to it, the people on the ground are the ones that truly manage the risks.

They are in the business of advising their clients on the merits of understanding the condition of their assets and go to great lengths to communicate the capabilities and features of our instrumentation and services. This involves live inspections on customers’ assets to demonstrate all the “clever things” that can be done to understand the health of the asset and how the information can be used to manage the assets safely, effectively and cost efficiently.

While they are keen to focus on their technical ability and knowledge during demonstration in front of their customers, there is always an initial exercise that can go unnoticed but it is in fact central to the whole point of being there: they simply use their judgement and an instrument to check that the asset is generally doing what it’s supposed to! Performing background tests for electrical Partial Discharge (EA Technology’s UltraTEV Detector is an ideal instrument), listening for any audible discharge and sensing for the tell-tale gases are fast and effective first-pass safety checks.

These simple activities are now habitual for them and are part of their standard risk assessment when working in an electrical substation.

The value of George Fischer’s widely specified HDPE pipe systems has just been enhanced through the

development of the world’s first non-destructive testing (NDT) regime for HDPE products, which now allows the manufacturer to issue a “Fit for Service” certificate on both Electrofusion and butt welds. This very significant stride forward means that clients in the water, gas distribution, food processing and other industries requiring the highest standards cam now specify systems such eco-FIT, ELGEF Plus and PROGEF with the same confidence as metal pipework alternatives.

Meanwhile customers can continue to benefit from these well engineered systems’ speed of installation, versatility, low weight, durability and other key attributes. Crucially GF Pipe System’s new ultrasonic based, non-invasive testing will see the company’s internationally recognised partner provide a responsive on-site service which can check up to 20-30 separate welds per day. The Pass/Fail report can include details of any discontinuities detected by the scanners and is accompanied by a 10-year guarantee to provide complete peace of mind for the specifier or their end client.

As one of the world’s most respected manufacturers of HDPE and other pipework systems, George Fischer strives to set the highest standards in quality control, both within the factory and throughout the installation process. REDUCE YOUR COOLING COSTS BY 90% with EcoCooling’s Direct Evaporative Cooling, Ventilation and Control Systems

With over 3,500 installations worldwide, UK based EcoCooling are innovators in low energy, direct evaporative

cooling and ventilation technologies. They have developed energy efficient cooling solutions to suit all types of buildings including warehouses, factories, data centers, comms rooms, retail and commercial.

Founded in 2002 EcoCooling provides energy efficient and low carbon alternatives to air conditioning. Developed from one of the oldest and simplest technologies known to man.

EcoCooling have taken the concept of direct evaporative cooling and reengineered it to provide a sophisticated cooling and ventilation system that can outperform the alternatives on most counts.

Fresh Air Cooling with EcoCooling can provide a 3m3/s or cool a 30kW load from 1kW of power at a cost of under 14p per hour. Energy use can further be reduced by the use of EC (Electrically Commutated) fans in IT environments. EcoCooling’s 1,500m² of warehousing provides

a manufacturing and R&D facility, as well as a storage base for all spares and coolers. This ensures that short lead times and adequate supply of spares are guaranteed.

Simple ventilation can provide a perfectly satisfactory solution to cooling many industrial and commercial premises, however recent advances in fan technology, controls and evaporative cooling have now taken this principle to a new level of performance, which has proven to be very popular for industrial purposes.

EcoCoolers can either be used for blanket cooling a building or for spot cooling of workstations and production lines. The solution is perfect for factories, warehouses, and mezzanine floors. Clients include: TKMaxx, Cummins Diesel, Net-a Porter, and Matalan. The EcoCooler is highly cost effective in comparison to traditional refrigerant air conditioning, and can operate on less than 10% of the running cost.

Cummins Diesel Engines recently invested in 42 EcoCoolers, due to very hot uncomfortable

temperatures on their main shop floor. These units introduce fresh, chilled and filtered air to the various workstations throughout their production facility. They are all controlled from two floor mounted centralised control panels. The system reduces summertime temperatures from over 30oC to a far more comfortable 21oC.

Many locations can maintain compliant conditions by using only ‘free cooling’ (fresh air). Multiple EC fans can be connected directly to simple temperature controllers giving the simplest of automated solutions. PLC’s can be used where more stringent conditions have to be met or when heating and cooling systems need to be integrated.

Ventilation coupled with evaporative cooling and modern controls can provide industrial and commercial premises with a sophisticated air handling system that can compare with any air cooling refrigeration system at a fraction of the energy cost and provide a high level of control of the environment.

The EcoCooler is also available in several different configurations, meaning they are suitable for any location and are easy to install and come with minimal maintenance.

Our complimentary in-house design consultancy service capitalises on our vast industry experience to work closely with consultants and clients to design the most efficient systems possible.

If you are having temperature problems in your warehouse or factory please contact us on the number below.

PCB announces CALROUTE firmware option for portable calibratorsPCB Piezotronics, Inc.(“PCB®”),

a designer, manufacturer, and global supplier of accelerometers, microphones, calibration systems, and force, torque, load, and strain sensors has announced CALROUTE. Developed by PCB’s sister company, The Modal Shop, this new firmware upgrade for the Portable Vibration Calibrator delivers semi-automatic generation of test points to simplify calibration routines.

Ideal for installations with many vibration sensors of the same model, CALROUTE enables repetitive calibration routines to be generated. Test routines are set up on a laptop or desktop computer before being transferred to the Portable Vibration Calibrator via a USB memory stick, allowing multiple sensor models to be calibrated without having to reload data. Running these routines on vibration sensors is straightforward.

On the Model 9110D Portable Vibration Calibrator, an indication of pass or fail status is clearly displayed on the calibrator’s screen in real-time during testing. Test results are then recorded onto the same USB memory stick for later transfer back to the computer where ISO 17025 compliant calibration certificates can be printed. This simple process allows a vibration expert to set up tests and hand them off to a

technician, even someone with no vibration testing experience.

The CALROUTE upgrade is complemented by two additional improvements for Model 9110D Portable Vibration Calibrators. The low frequency range of the device is extended from 7Hz to 5Hz. A new firmware option, 9110-MC, adds “modulated current” sensor calibration capability and displays sensitivity in µA or mA per engineering unit.

Rothenberger are recognised as the supplier of the worlds’ most comprehensive range of professional plumbing

and pipework tools. Mention the name to any plumber and they will almost instantly associate the name with their best-selling Super Fire 2 soldering and brazing torch. Sold in 19 countries the torch outperforms their competition owing to its unique design and outstanding performance.

As with most successful products copies have appeared in the market. This prompted Rothenberger to review their position and presentation of the product. Various options were considered including clampack, printed board cartons and transparent presentation packaging. Following months of research Rothenberger chose to use the transparent pack designed by Bell Packaging Limited.

The end caps are made using a special mould developed for the application. In addition to being a closure the cap can be used as a stand to hold the torch when not being used. The caps use the patented Jetlok® design of fixing (Patent No. GB2355000). This feature ensures that copies cannot be made and protects the substantial investment made by Rothenberger in the new packaging.

The end caps are moulded using a special PP polymer which delivers excellent strength. The caps are 100% recyclable. The body of the box is made using a recycled grade of PET recycled film. A hanging facility is added to the pack to deliver a flexible and attractive completed pack which is decorated with a silver foil print

Previously the clampacks would be opened, removed and put in the bin however the new packaging gives the user an ideal container to store the torch when not in use. To meet the 2017 launch date the mould to make the end caps was created in the UK and all other aspects of the packaging are manufactured at the new Bell production facility that is BRC registered.

They also provide specialist process equipment for the malting industry through to complete turnkey material handling solutions.

The acknowledged manufacturer and supplier was founded in 1947 by a team of experienced engineers

in Yorkshire. Their work initially focused on general fabrication and repairs for those operating within the coal industry, but continued success made it a strategic business move for the group to diversify into different fields. DVE is now, as a result, a favoured machinery provider that is capable of servicing the exacting requirements of organisations rooted in the bulk material processing & handling, screening, centrifuging and maltings process equipment production markets.

“We soon built a reputation with new and existing customers for consistency and quality whilst acquiring

status as the supplier of choice for the sourcing of linear screens, centrifuges, feeders and maltings equipment,” commented Jeff Buxton, DVE’s Group Sales Manager. “As a company, we are very forward-thinking and always looking to progress, either by organic growth or through acquisition of competitor services or other relevant business assets. As we have evolved, new industries have emerged, bringing us new opportunities and challenges.”

In 2009 there was another significant restructuring that helped the company to expand further. It was at this time the Don Valley group of enterprises were

formed; a cluster of dedicated divisions each with its own industry-specific knowledge and expertise. The purpose of this was to enable customers to experience a more focused form of material handling service, and the resulting setup was four individual businesses: Don Valley Construction, Don Valley Maltings, Cleeve Materials Handling (a provider of material handling solutions to the water treatment, chemical, food, alternative fuels and waste to energy markets) and, of course, Don Valley Engineering.

Equipment supply, site construction and process design are all core examples of works conducted by DVE; this is made possible with the company’s competent workforce and impressively vast suite of equipment. Its specific selection of systems and services include conceptual design & feasibility studies, FEEDS, EPC, Design, Build, Risk Management, Site management, Site Supervision and CDM 2015. With these first-rate resources, the team are well placed to provide full turnkey solutions for process industries and for the material handling of bulk solids, delivering products that can function in heavy industry applications (such as power, biomass, iron & steel, mineral, aggregates and recycling).

“We can offer customers many significant benefits; these include high equipment reliability, product

longevity, good availability and reduced maintenance costs,” Jeff said in his concluding statement. “Our capabilities extend to complete installation and site management with a dedicated aftersales service, which allows all of our customers the opportunity to realise what an excellent return on investment they gain by working with a company like DVE.”
