Tee Talk – December 2016 Page 1 Message from the President Dear Members and friends of the CCC, As mentioned last month and as scheduled, we sponsored the Cruz Roja annual tournament, that was held Thursday 11/03/16.The event was a big success thanks to the efforts of our staff and the volunteers that help every year. A foursome from our Club member, Janis Phair & her son, Rob Edwards & Bob Walton, won first place. Congratulations to them and of course congratulations to all the greens, golf, and club house staff for a work well done. During the last Board meeting the Board approved the date for our next 2017 AGM to be held on the Saturday January 28th, 2107. The preparations for the meeting already began since according to our By-Laws, we have to have all the information package produced, translated and ready to be published to the whole membership no later than 12/27/16. Fortunately during the same Board meeting, the Board approved the Budgets; Operational and Capital, for 2017. The Treasurer can now work on his annual report to be published as part of the information package for the AGM. His report will be the most important report and at the same time the most difficult and time consuming report to put together. A very important part of our AGM is the election of part of the Board of Directors. Carol Peel, our VP and Secretary, who is chairing the Nominations Committee, already has several candidates for the new Board but we are still looking for more candidates. So, if anybody is interested to be candidate for the 2017 BOD, please send your name and a brief resume to Carol. Her email address is: [email protected] I was sorry to learn this past week that our course and greens Superintendent, Mauricio Aguirre, tendered his resignation to the Club. It seems that he found a better opportunity to somewhere else. He made a valuable contribution in the improvement of the course and the Club and he is a valuable asset that we will be sorry to lose. We wish all the best for him and his family in this new professional venture. Mauricio will work with us until the last day of the month of this year. Rob Edwards, our Greens Director, Carlos, our GM, and I, are already evaluating the options we have to replace Mauricio. I will make a report to the whole membership about the decision we make about this sensitive issue. It is December already, the Christmas festivities have begun and New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. So being a little bit in advance since I will not have another opportunity to wish to the whole CCC membership and our friends a merry Christmas and a very happy and healthy new year, I do so now with all my heart. I wish all of you the best for you and your families, and I really wish all of you a very happy 2017. We will have several events during this month of December that somehow will affect the normal activities of the golf course, the Club house, and the restaurant. On the 8th we will have the Caddies tournament. The tee off is at 9:00 a.m. On the 10th, the CVL will have their residents Christmas party. The restaurant will be closed at 3:00 p.m. On the 15th, we will have our staff golf tournament. On the 17th, CVL will have their employees Christmas party. The CCC restaurant will be closed at 12:00 noon, On the 18th, we will have our employees children Christmas party.

~ John and Bob were two of the bitterest rivals at the club. Neither man trusted the other's arithmetic. One day they were playing a heated match and watching each other like hawks. After holing out on the fourth green and marking his six on the scorecard, John asked Bob, "What'd you have? Bob went through the motions of mentally counting up. "Six!" he said and then hastily corrected himself,. " No, no....a five." Calmly John marked the scorecard, saying out loud "Eight!" "Eight?" Bob said, "I couldn't have had eight." John said, "Nope, you claimed six, then changed it to five, but actually you had seven." "Then why did you mark down eight?" asked Bob. John told him, "One stroke penalty, for improving your lie." ~ A couple of buddies, decide to play together for the first time. Mac is an avid golfer and Jimmy is new to the game. On the way to the course, Mac asks "By the way, what's your handicap?" Jimmy replies, "I don't have one..it's more like a permanent disability"

FROM THE GREENSKEEPER OFFICE

It’s natural to look back and lament the passing of time. We all get nostalgic occasionally, and when we get frustrated with current trends, why wouldn’t we want to return to better days? Some in our industry have expressed a similar yearning for a bygone era. Over the past several years, I’ve overheard conversations in conference hallways and read on blogs and in magazines that many of the newer golf cleat/sole designs cause more damage to putting surfaces than older designs did. Heck, some have even advocated for the return of the 8-mm metal spike. Are things really that bad?

On Aug. 17, 2016, the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation hosted a field day. In preparation for the festivities, I gathered samples of some of the golf cleat/sole designs from the past 20 years that have been shown to be the most destructive to putting greens. How did I pull that off? Well, I’ve been performing golf cleat/sole studies since 1995, and I have cleats and shoes that have long disappeared from the market, partly because of the damage they inflict to the putting surface.

Treatments in my field-day study included the 8-mm spike, Champ Scorpion and Black Widow cleats inserted into flat-bottom golf shoes. I chose flat-soled shoes because research has proved that flat-soled shoes with cleats/spikes result in more visible damage to a putting surface than soles with protrusions (instead of cleats or spikes). In addition, in the mid-’90s, most golf shoes had flat soles. To represent the worst of the modern-day golf cleat/sole designs, I opted for the Adizero golf shoe from Adidas. I chose that shoe because of the numerous phone calls, emails and data that have shown me there was legitimate concern about their aggressive, destructive impact on greens. Unfavorable ratings were highest for the 8-mm spikes (80%), followed by the Champ Scorpion (37%), Black Widow (21%) and Adizero (11%). I admit to being surprised at the significant differences among each treatment.

When we compared the past 20 years of golf cleats, the ones on the market today did not cause as much damage as the older models did. Maybe, just maybe, things were not better in the past. More than likely, the advances of the past 20 years have elevated our expectations. The putting greens today

are managed with better topdressing equipment, sprinklers, rollers and mowers than the greens of 20 years ago. Our putting surfaces have never been smoother in the history of the game, and the closer we get to perfection, the more our imperfections are amplified. That said, just because things are better than they were does not mean we have to settle. The newer cleat/sole designs appear to be superior to those of the past, but our job is to remain vigilant and demand even better.

Adicionalmente, a

Champ Scorpion (37%), Black Widow (21%) y Adizero (11%).

2016 RED CROSS TOURNAMENT

November 3, 2016 dawned bright and sunny, Country Club de Chapala was in fantastic condition, the roster was full and the

competition was fierce! The 13th Annual Golf Classic was set to go!

The day began with a putting contest. For the first time ever, four balls fell into the hole! A four-way play off resulted in a

winner - Johan Dirkes won two rounds of golf at El Tigre in Nueva Vallarta. Well done, Johan - enjoy!

The winning team for the competition was Bob Walton, Joel Phair, Janis Phair and Rob Edwards. Congratulations! Well

played!

The organising committee would like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors and donors, large and small, for their

contributions. Without them the tournament could not go ahead, and their generosity is much appreciated. Thanks also go to

all of our volunteers, without whom we could not succeed

Our mission this year was to raise money to refurbish the ambulances. All of the proceeds from the tournament will stay in

Chapala and this year, will be used to service the engines and re-equip the ambulance interiors. The Red Cross Chapala

ambulance service is vital to the community and ranges as far as Jocotopec and Poncitlan with emergency services. The

success of the tournament this year will go a long way towards achieving our goal.

CONGRATULATIONS WINNERS, THANK YOU EVERYONE ONE! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

In the past few months, we have been seeing little bits of litter appearing on the golf

course. There at least 9 garbage cans provided on the course. Please use them. This

includes cigarette butts thrown down everywhere. This detracts from beauty of our golf

course. Remember that which YOU throw down will be there next time you play, and the

time after that, and the time after that. It is not the job of our greens staff to be

picking up your cigarette butts. Please carry and use an ashtray in your golf cart.

We now have ashtrays for sale in the ProShop for next to nothing!

No
