Pitt Meadows Golf Club Monthly History:

TEE TALKOCTOBER 2016

Winning the Gold - Brian Van Os

Our Men’s club “PITT POT” had grown to an amount that the Match committee and a majority of the membership felt to large an amount. They capped the current pot at $16,000 with the remainder to be put into the next pot. Our Pitt Pot is not for a hole in one but is for a “SKIN” on the 3rd hole which is our shortest par three on the course. The previous winner of the PITT Pott was Larry Carter and if my recollection is correct he won $800. That means that our men’s players had over 16,000 chances to win the pot because $1 per player goes into the pot every Wednesday during our Men’s night events. One person did have a hole in one when the pot was around $1700 but did not pay the $1 to be eligible for the ”pot of gold”.

On this particular day I went out with my usual foursome Ken “Duke” Brenner, Joe Galer, Verne Johnson and joining us for the first time was Glen Pugh a newer member. Another of our fab five Doug Wood cancelled due to a family commitment. We are always one of the first groups out on Men’s night which is around 12:32. As we approached Hole 3 every week we would ask if we all were in for a split on the hole if we won the skin. As with ev-ery week everyone agreed as we had for the past 4 years. Glen Pugh usually went alone but on this particular day he said he was in with the group. It was an over cast day and our turnout was low due to this but we would get the required 70 players to make the Pot live. The hole was set in the right front corner of the green and only 128 yards. I was the third player to hit and selected an 8 iron due to the overcast conditions. I hit my shot and immediately Vern commented now that is a golf shot. My little fade hit about 2 feet left of the pin hole high and spun to the right above the hole and the back spin brought it into the hole. It was not my first hole in one so that did not get me excited but realizing I had a great chance of the Pitt Pot of Gold left me in a bit of shock. Once we finished I had to wait out first to see if we would get the required 70 players and secondly that nobody else would get a hole in one on # 3. I had played with Neil Roberts on Friday skins when he had a hole in one on #16 but did not get a skin because Geoff Watt made a hole in one on the same hole so it is not impossible.

As per our agreement each player received a share of the Pot and we even included our weekly partner Doug Wood. It was an honour to win and I made sure lots of people shared in my joy with Drinks. Everyone present that night was offered a drink and over the next two days I spent a lot of money giving friends and members a drink on me. I guess you might say I am part of Pitt History.
